DL status and driving licence services: check, apply, renew, correct

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 24 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

To check your DL status, open sarathi.parivahan.gov.in, choose your state, select Application Status and enter your application number, date of birth and the captcha. The page shows the current stage, such as fee paid, test due, approved or dispatched. To see whether an issued licence is valid, use the DL details search with your licence number and date of birth.

Key takeaways

  • Every state except a few runs licences on Sarathi, the national licence portal built by NIC for MoRTH.
  • Application status needs the application number and date of birth; an issued licence is checked with the DL number.
  • A learner licence lasts 6 months, and the driving test can be booked 30 days after it is issued.
  • Validity depends on your age at issue: under 30, the licence runs until age 40.
  • A licence shown in DigiLocker or mParivahan is accepted as a valid document during checks.

What does DL status mean on the Sarathi portal?

Your DL status is the stage your licence application has reached, or the current condition of a licence already issued. Sarathi, the licence system NIC runs for MoRTH, records both. An application can show fee paid or test pending, while an issued licence shows active, expired or suspended.

Five steps to run a DL status check on the Sarathi licence portal
The same screen tracks learner, new, renewal and duplicate applications.

Application status versus licence status

Application status follows a form you submitted, using the application number. Licence status describes a card that already exists, using the DL number. They are separate searches on the same portal.

Why the status matters

RTOs, employers and police read the same record. If the card says one thing and Sarathi says another, the online record is the one that counts.

How to check status of driving license online?

You can track any learner, new, renewal or duplicate licence application on Sarathi in about two minutes. Keep the application number from your acknowledgement slip or SMS ready, along with your date of birth, then follow these steps.

  1. Open Sarathi. Go to sarathi.parivahan.gov.in or the Driving Licence Related Services link on parivahan.gov.in.
  2. Choose your state. Pick the state where you applied from the list.
  3. Open Application Status. Find Application Status in the licence services menu.
  4. Enter your details. Type the application number, date of birth and captcha, then submit.
  5. Read the stage. Note the current stage and the next action, such as a test slot or fee payment.

Who can check driving licence details

Any holder can see their own record. Traffic police, RTO staff, insurers and employers can verify a licence to confirm validity, which is why fleet owners check drivers before hiring.

The online licence check guide covers the mParivahan and SMS options in detail, including what each one shows.

License status: what do Active, Expired and Suspended mean?

A license status label tells you whether you may drive today. Active means valid. Expired means the validity date has passed. Suspended means the licensing authority has barred you for a period. Read the label before you drive, rent a car or apply for a job.

Status for each vehicle class

One licence can carry several classes, each with its own validity. A transport class usually expires sooner than the non-transport one.

When the record looks wrong

If a valid licence shows as expired, carry the card and renewal receipt to the RTO. The clerk can correct the database entry.

How to check licence renewal status?

Renewal applications are tracked like any other: use Application Status with the number printed on your renewal receipt. The page shows whether the documents were approved, whether biometrics are pending and whether the new card has been printed and dispatched.

Typical renewal stages

You will usually see fee received, documents scrutinised, approved, card printed and dispatched. Some RTOs skip the photo step when they already hold your recent biometrics.

Driving license renewal status stuck

If the status has not moved for weeks, call or visit the RTO with the application number. A missing medical certificate is a common cause for applicants over 40.

DL renewal online: when should you renew?

You can apply for DL renewal online up to one year before expiry and up to one year after it. After the 2019 amendment the old 30-day grace period was removed, so you should not drive on an expired licence while renewal is pending.

Your age on the issue date decides when the card expires.

What the 2019 rule changed

The renewal window rule came with the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019. Applying late within the year means only the normal fee; later than a year may mean a fresh test.

How to find DL number if you have lost it?

If you have lost the card, first look for a photo, scan or DigiLocker copy, or an old SMS from the RTO. In supported states Sarathi also lets you search by name, date of birth and registered mobile number. Failing that, the issuing RTO can find it from your details.

How to find drivers license number online

Try the DL search on Sarathi using your name and date of birth, then confirm with the OTP sent to your registered mobile. It works only where the mobile was linked earlier.

How to find license number on old paperwork

Insurance claims, challan receipts and your original application form often carry the licence number. Check those before visiting the RTO.

Where is the DL number printed on the card?

On a smart card licence the DL number sits on the front, near the top, beside or below the words Driving Licence. It is the longest code on the card, made of letters and digits, and often follows the label DL No.

Parts of an Indian DL number: state code, RTO code, year and serial
Example layout only; your number follows the same pattern.

How the number is built

Newer numbers have 15 characters: a two-letter state code, a two-digit RTO code, a four-digit year of issue and a seven-digit serial. Our driving licence number example page breaks down real formats.

DL state code and LD codes

The letters DL at the start of a number mean Delhi, not driving licence. LD is the code for Lakshadweep. Searches for DL road usually mean Delhi registrations; see the ld registration page for plate codes.

What is a DL extract and how do you get one?

A DL extract is a one-page printout of your licence record from Sarathi: name, number, classes, validity and issuing RTO. It is not a replacement licence, but employers and embassies sometimes ask for it as proof that the licence is current.

How to print the extract

On Sarathi, choose your state, open the print or DL extract option, and enter the licence number and date of birth. Save the page as a PDF.

Meaning of the word extract

Our dl extract meaning page explains when an extract is accepted and when the original card is needed.

Can I download driving licence online?

Yes. You can download a digital driving licence through DigiLocker or mParivahan, and print a soft copy from Sarathi in many states. The digital version is accepted during traffic checks, so you do not have to carry the plastic card everywhere.

How to download virtual driving licence

In mParivahan, add your licence with the DL number and date of birth to create a virtual licence with a QR code. In DigiLocker, search for Driving Licence under your state’s transport department and fetch it.

Can I show driving licence online during a check

Yes. Under CMVR Rule 139 and a 2018 MoRTH advisory, a licence shown in DigiLocker or mParivahan is a valid document. A screenshot or photo is not.

How to get driving licence copy online

The digilocker driving licence guide covers linking, errors and how to share the file.

How to get a driving license in India from start to finish?

Getting a driving licence in India is a two-stage process. You first earn a learner licence by passing a short computer test, practise for at least 30 days, then take a driving test at the RTO. Pass it and the permanent card is printed and sent to you.

How to get licence: the short version

Apply online on Sarathi, upload documents, pay the fee, pass the learner test, wait 30 days, book and pass the driving test, then receive the card.

How to get drivers license documents ready

You need proof of age, proof of address, photos and a self-declaration of fitness (Form 1). See documents required for driving license for the full list.

Timeline from learner licence test to driving test and final licence in India
Book the driving test inside the six-month learner window.

Can we apply for driving licence online?

Yes, the full application is online on Sarathi in almost every state. You fill the form, upload documents, pay and book slots online. Only the driving test and, in some states, biometrics need a visit to the RTO.

How can I get driving licence with fewer visits

Many states now allow the learner test from home with Aadhaar authentication. That leaves a single RTO trip for the driving test.

When you still need the RTO

Transport vehicle licences, document mismatches and older paper licences usually need a counter visit.

How to apply for learning licence online?

To apply for a learner licence, open Sarathi, choose your state and select Apply for Learner Licence. Fill your personal details, choose the vehicle classes, upload documents, pay the fee and book a test slot or take the online test.

How to get learning license online with Aadhaar

If your state offers the Aadhaar-based option, your details fill in from Aadhaar and you can take the test on a webcam, without visiting the RTO.

How to make learning license online: test preparation

The test covers signs, rules and driving manners. Practise with our learning license test questions before you sit it.

How to download learning licence after the test?

Once you pass, the learner licence is ready to print the same day in most states. On Sarathi, open Print Learner Licence, enter the application number and date of birth, and save the PDF. There is no plastic card for a learner licence.

How to download my learning licence later

The same print option works any time during the six-month validity. Keep both a PDF and a paper copy in the vehicle.

Clear the browser cache or try another browser. Our llr download guide lists the common errors.

Learning license status: how do you track an LL application?

Your learning license status appears in the same Application Status screen. It shows whether the fee has been received, a test slot is booked, the test is passed or failed, and whether the licence has been approved for printing.

If the test shows failed

You can retake the learner test after paying the retest fee. Most states allow a retest after a short wait, often the next day.

If payment shows pending

Wait 24 hours for the bank to confirm. If it still shows pending, use the verify payment option on Sarathi before paying again.

How to edit learner licence application form after payment?

After payment the form is mostly locked. Small errors in name, address or date of birth can usually be fixed at the RTO when you go for your test, if you bring proof. Some states offer an edit application option before the test slot is used.

What you can and cannot change

Spelling and address errors are usually fixable. Changing the vehicle class or applicant often means a fresh application and fee.

Avoiding the problem

Use the preview screen before payment and match every detail to your Aadhaar or other ID.

How do you move from a learner to a full DL?

After holding a learner licence for at least 30 days, apply for a driving licence on Sarathi using your learner licence number, book a driving test slot and pass the test at the RTO. The permanent licence is then printed and posted.

Booking the driving test

Slots fill fast in big cities. See our slot booking guide for how to find earlier dates.

What the test checks

You drive a set route or an H or 8 track, and the inspector checks control, signals and observation.

How long does it take to get driving licence?

From your first application, getting a full driving licence takes at least 30 days, because that is the minimum wait after the learner licence. In practice most people finish in one to two months, depending on test slot availability and card printing in their state.

Learner licence timing

Delhi issues the learner licence on the same day after the computer test. Most states are similar.

Card delivery timing

Printing and posting typically take a couple of weeks after the test, but this varies by RTO.

LMV driving license: which vehicles does it cover?

An LMV driving license lets you drive light motor vehicles such as cars, jeeps, vans and small goods vehicles. In 2024 the Supreme Court held that an LMV holder may also drive a transport vehicle under 7,500 kg without a separate endorsement.

LMV in daily use

Most car owners only need LMV. Add MCWG at the same time if you ride a bike, since both can be tested in one visit.

More on vehicle classes

See lmv in driving licence and types of licenses for every class code.

How to apply for motorbike licence?

To ride a motorbike you need a licence with the MCWG class. Apply for a learner licence for MCWG on Sarathi, practise for 30 days with an L plate, then pass the two-wheeler test at the RTO.

Motorcycle driving license test

The rider usually completes an 8-shaped track without putting a foot down. Our 2 wheeler driving test guide explains each stage.

How to apply for motorcycle permit

India has no separate motorcycle permit. The learner licence is the permit to practise, and the MCWG class is the final licence.

What does NT license full form mean, and what is a transport licence?

NT stands for Non-Transport, the class for private vehicles you drive for yourself. TR or transport covers vehicles driven for hire or commercial use, such as taxis, buses and trucks. The two often appear side by side on one card with different validity dates.

TR licence requirements

A transport licence needs the applicant to be at least 20, a medical certificate in Form 1A, and in most cases a period of holding an LMV licence.

Badges and endorsements

Public service drivers may also need a badge. See the psv badge to a driver guide.

Is a class 2 licence used in India?

No. Class 2 licence is a term from the UK, New Zealand and parts of Canada and Australia, where it usually means a medium or heavy vehicle licence. India uses class codes such as LMV, MCWG and HGMV instead.

Indian equivalent

The closest Indian match is a transport or heavy goods class. Check the exact vehicle weight against the class table above.

Converting a foreign class 2 licence

Foreign licence holders who settle in India apply at the RTO for an Indian licence; the test may be waived depending on the country.

What is the maximum age for driving licence in India?

There is no maximum age for driving licence in India. The Motor Vehicles Act sets only minimum ages. Older drivers can keep driving as long as they pass the medical check, and anyone aged 40 or above must attach a Form 1A medical certificate.

Minimum age limits for a driving licence in India by vehicle type

Upper age limit for driving licence in India

Renewals over 55 are valid for 5 years, so senior drivers renew more often and are medically checked each time.

Minimum age for obtaining driving licence for transport vehicles

Section 4(2) of the Act sets 20 years for transport vehicles. See llr full form for learner licence age rules.

Licence for 16 year old: what does the law allow?

A 16-year-old can get a licence only for a motorcycle of up to 50cc engine capacity, with written consent of a parent or guardian. Very few such vehicles are sold today, so most teenagers in practice wait until 18 for a scooter or bike licence.

16 years license in India for scooters

Most scooters, including many electric ones, need an MCWOG or MCWG licence at 18. Check the does electric scooter need license guide for low-speed exemptions.

Penalty for underage driving

If a minor drives, the guardian or owner can face a ₹25,000 fine and jail under section 199A.

What do central licence charges look like under Rule 32?

Central licence fees come from Rule 32 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, last revised in December 2016. States collect these and often add a service or online charge, so your receipt may be higher. The central amounts are below.

Delhi, Haryana and other states publish their own totals. See driving licence fee for 4 wheeler and 2 wheeler for a combined view.

Fees are paid on Sarathi by UPI, card or net banking. Keep the receipt number for status checks.

How to apply for DL smart card?

A smart card licence is the plastic card with a chip or QR code that replaced paper licences. New licences are issued as smart cards by default. If you still hold a paper licence, ask for conversion when renewing, or apply for a duplicate or replacement on Sarathi.

How to apply for smart driving licence on Sarathi

Choose the service for replacement or duplicate of licence, enter the DL number, pay the fee and upload a photo. The card is posted after approval.

Smart card driving license and digital copies

A smart card and a digital copy carry the same data. Our driving licence digital page compares them.

How big is a driving licence card in cm?

Indian smart card licences follow the standard ID-1 card size used by bank cards, about 8.56 cm by 5.4 cm. That means it fits a wallet card slot. Photos for the application are a different size and are covered on the driving licence photo page.

There is no official licence image or logo to download. Pictures sold or shared as a driving licence PNG are only illustrations; never print one as a card, because a fake driving licence is an offence.

If you print the Sarathi soft copy for reference, A4 paper is fine. It does not replace the card or the DigiLocker version.

How to change address on driving licence?

Apply on Sarathi under change of address, upload proof of the new address, pay the fee and, where required, visit the RTO. The dl address change guide covers the forms and what proofs are accepted.

Moving to another state

A licence stays valid across India, so you only update the address. Apply through the RTO in your new area.

Aadhaar, passport, utility bill or rent agreement usually work. Check the state list first.

How to change name on driving license online?

A name change, for example after marriage, is applied for on Sarathi with a gazette notification, marriage certificate or similar proof. You upload the proof, pay the fee and the RTO approves the change before printing a new card.

Change name on driving licence online versus a spelling fix

A full name change needs legal proof. A spelling error needs only an ID that shows the correct spelling.

Full steps

See how to change name in driving license for screens and documents.

How to update mobile number in driving licence?

On Sarathi, choose the service to update mobile number, enter your DL number and date of birth, and verify the new number with an OTP. Some states also authenticate through Aadhaar. Once updated, all licence SMS alerts go to the new phone.

Common driving license correction problems and the Sarathi service that fixes each one
Each fix is a separate service on the Sarathi menu.

How to change phone number in driving licence if the old SIM is lost

Use the Aadhaar route if offered. Otherwise the RTO can update it at the counter after checking your ID.

Linking and updating are the same service. Do it before any online renewal, because OTPs go to the stored number.

Each licence is updated separately with its own OTP.

Driving license correction: which details can be fixed?

Driving license correction covers name spelling, date of birth, address, photo and signature errors. Each one is a separate service on Sarathi, and most need a document that shows the correct detail. Date of birth changes are checked strictly.

Common correction proofs

Birth certificate, Class 10 certificate, passport or Aadhaar are usual for date of birth. Gazette notices are used for name changes.

After the correction

A new card is printed with the corrected detail. Your DL number does not change.

DL duplicate apply: what if the card is lost?

If your card is lost, stolen or damaged, apply for a duplicate on Sarathi. Many states ask for a police complaint or FIR copy when the card was stolen. The duplicate carries the same licence number and validity.

Online steps

Choose the duplicate service, enter the DL number, upload the complaint copy and photo, then pay. Our duplicate driving license guide has each step.

While you wait

Use the DigiLocker or mParivahan copy to drive legally.

Driving licence track speed post: how do you follow the card?

Many RTOs send the printed card by speed post. Once the Sarathi status shows dispatched, look for the consignment number in the status page or SMS, then enter it on the India Post tracking page to follow delivery.

No tracking number shown

Some RTOs hand cards over the counter instead. Call the RTO and ask how your card will be delivered.

If nobody was home, the card goes back to the RTO. Collect it there with ID, or ask for re-dispatch.

Driving licence suspension rules: when can a licence be suspended?

Under section 19 of the Motor Vehicles Act, the licensing authority can disqualify or revoke a licence for serious or repeated offences. A Supreme Court road-safety committee directed states to suspend licences for at least 3 months for offences such as over-speeding and drunk driving.

Offences named for suspension

The committee listed over-speeding, red-light jumping, drunk driving, overloading goods vehicles, carrying people in goods vehicles and using a mobile phone while driving.

Drivers license suspension and driving anyway

Driving while disqualified can cost up to ₹10,000 under section 182. Check related penalties in our without licence fine guide.

Use helmet while driving: what does the law say?

Every rider and pillion on a two-wheeler must use a helmet that meets BIS standards and is fastened. Section 194D sets a fine of ₹1,000, and the licence can be disqualified for three months. Some states allow exemptions, for example for turbaned Sikhs.

Do's and don'ts for helmet use and highway lane rules for Indian drivers
Simple habits that avoid most challans and licence suspensions.

Children on two-wheelers

Rules notified in 2022 require small children riding pillion to wear a fitted helmet and a safety harness, and the rider must keep speed low.

Helmet challans

Cameras now issue helmet challans automatically. See the e challan guide to check and pay them.

Highway lane rules in India: how do 3 and 4 lane roads work?

The basic highway lane rule is keep left, overtake from the right. On 3 lane and 4 lane highways, slower and heavy vehicles stay in the left lanes, and the right lane is for overtaking only. Change lanes one at a time, with indicators.

3 lane highway rules in India

On each side, use the left lane for slow traffic, the middle lane for steady cruising, and the right lane only to pass, then return.

4 lane highway driving rules in India

Do not stop on the carriageway, and do not reverse on a highway. Use the shoulder only for breakdowns.

Driving in India: which rules matter most for new drivers?

The main driving rules for new drivers are simple: carry a valid licence, RC, insurance and PUC; wear a seat belt or helmet; keep to speed limits; never drink and drive; and give way to emergency vehicles. Most challans come from these few basics.

Driving vehicle documents to carry

Licence, registration certificate, insurance and pollution certificate, in paper or in DigiLocker or mParivahan.

Signs and signals

Learn the mandatory, cautionary and information signs. Our traffic signs page groups them with meanings.

A learner must show an L plate and drive with a licensed person beside them.

Driving lessons for beginners: what should you learn first?

Driving lessons for beginners should start with controls and clutch work in an empty area, then move to slow traffic, signals and parking, and only then to busy roads and highways. Ten to twenty hours of supervised practice is common before the driving test.

Learn driving online: does it replace road practice?

Online videos and simulators help with rules and road sense, but they cannot replace time behind the wheel. The RTO test is always on a real vehicle.

Private driving instructor or motor driving school

A licensed motor driving school can also issue a training certificate. A private instructor is fine for practice, but check they hold a valid licence.

Driving licence movie download: what is the film?

Driving Licence is a 2019 Malayalam film starring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Suraj Venjaramoodu, later remade in Hindi as Selfiee in 2023. It is a story about a film star and a motor vehicle inspector, not a guide to licences.

Watching it legally

Watch it only on licensed streaming platforms. Free movie download sites often carry malware and break copyright law.

If you wanted the licence itself

Read our guide in Hindi, driving licence kaise banaye, or start from the learner licence section above.

Driving certificate: what is it?

A driving certificate usually means the Form 5 training certificate a licensed driving school gives when you finish its course. It helps with transport licences, where training is often required. It is not a licence and does not let you drive alone.

When you need it

Transport vehicle applicants often need a training certificate. For private licences it is optional.

Driving licence 2019 changes

The 2019 amendment removed the minimum education rule for transport licences and pushed accredited training centres.

DL status questions

How can I check my DL status by application number?

Open Sarathi, choose your state, select Application Status and enter the application number with your date of birth. The current stage of the application appears on the next screen.

Can I check DL status without the application number?

For an issued licence, yes: search DL details with the licence number and date of birth. For a pending application you need the number from your acknowledgement slip or SMS.

How do I know my driving licence is genuine?

Search it on Sarathi or in mParivahan. A genuine licence shows the same name, classes and validity as the card. If nothing comes up, contact the issuing RTO.

Is a learner licence valid for driving alone?

No. A learner must drive with a licensed instructor or driver beside them and show an L plate on the vehicle.

What happens if I drive with an expired licence?

An expired licence counts as no licence, which can attract a fine of up to ₹5,000 under section 181 of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Can I hold two driving licences?

No. A person may hold only one driving licence in India. New vehicle classes are added to the same licence as endorsements.

Does my licence work in every state?

Yes. A licence issued by any RTO is valid across India. If you move, you only need to update the address.

How do I check DL status on my phone?

Open Sarathi in the phone browser, or add the licence in the mParivahan app using the DL number and date of birth.

Why does my licence status show not found?

Older paper licences may not be in the central database yet. Ask the RTO that issued it to backlog the record into Sarathi.

Can someone else apply for my licence?

Anyone can fill the online form for you, but you must attend the tests yourself, and the photo, signature and biometrics are yours.

Is it safe to share my DL number?

Share it only with employers, insurers and officials who need it. Do not post photos of the card online, because the number and date of birth unlock your record.

Who issues driving licences in India?

The state transport department, through its RTOs or licensing authorities, issues licences under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
