DL renewal guide: renew your driving licence on Sarathi or at the RTO

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 24 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

For DL renewal, open sarathi.parivahan.gov.in, pick your state, choose Services on Driving Licence and then renewal. Enter your licence number and date of birth, upload Form 1 (or Form 1A if you are 40 or older), pay the fee and print the slip. You can apply up to one year before expiry. Aadhaar e-KYC lets most people finish without visiting the RTO.

Key takeaways

  • You can apply for DL renewal from one year before the expiry date; the licence is not valid for driving once it expires.
  • The 2019 amendment removed the old 30-day grace period, and a renewal counts only from the day it is granted.
  • Applicants aged 40 and above attach a Form 1A medical certificate; younger private licence holders sign Form 1.
  • The central renewal fee is Rs 200; a late application costs Rs 300 plus Rs 1,000 for each year of delay, and states may add charges.
  • If more than a year has passed since expiry, the RTO can ask you to take the driving test again.
  • Your licence number, classes and record stay the same; only the validity date and card change.

What does DL renewal mean and when is it due?

DL renewal is the official extension of your driving licence’s validity by the licensing authority. It is due on the expiry date printed on the card, and you may apply from one year before that date. Nothing else about the licence changes: the number, classes and history stay with you.

Six steps for DL renewal online on the Sarathi portal, from state choice to receipt
Some states add an RTO appointment after the payment step.

Who renews the licence

Any licensing authority, which in practice means the RTO or district transport office, can renew a licence on the national Sarathi system run by NIC for MoRTH. You do not have to go back to the office that first issued the card.

What you get at the end

You receive a fresh validity period based on your age and, in most states, a new smart card by post. The updated record also flows to DigiLocker and mParivahan, so the virtual copy on your phone shows the new expiry date.

How to renew DL in India?

To renew DL in India, apply on Sarathi or at your RTO with the renewal application (Form 9), a fitness declaration or medical certificate, ID and address proof and the fee. Most people now finish online with Aadhaar e-KYC. The RTO checks the file and prints a card.

The two routes

The online route suits a licence that is still valid or expired less than a year ago, where Aadhaar details match the licence. The office route suits old paper licences, records with errors, or a licence that lapsed long ago.

What both routes share

Both start with the same Sarathi application and the same fee. The difference is only how your identity is checked: through an Aadhaar OTP online, or by an official looking at your original documents and taking your photo at the counter.

Can we renew driving license online?

Yes, you can renew a driving license online in almost every state through Sarathi. Since March 2021, MoRTH has allowed renewal of a licence that does not need a driving test to be done contactless with Aadhaar authentication, so no office visit is needed in most cases.

Which states use Sarathi

Nearly all states and Union Territories run licence services on Sarathi. A few, such as Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, have kept their own citizen portals for some services, but the record still sits in the national register.

When online is not enough

If your licence is not in Sarathi yet, your Aadhaar name differs from the licence, or you hold a transport licence that needs a fresh medical check in person, the portal will route you to an RTO appointment instead.

How to renew license online on Sarathi step by step?

To renew license online, open Sarathi, choose your state and the driving licence services menu, then follow six screens: licence details, renewal choice, form, uploads, payment and acknowledgement. Keep your licence number, date of birth, Aadhaar-linked mobile and a scan of Form 1 or Form 1A ready.

  1. Choose your state. Open sarathi.parivahan.gov.in and select the state where you live now, not where the licence was first issued.
  2. Open Services on Driving Licence. Pick the driving licence services menu and choose renewal from the list of services.
  3. Enter licence details. Type the DL number and date of birth, then confirm the record that appears on screen.
  4. Complete the form and uploads. Fill the online Form 9 and upload Form 1 or Form 1A and any other papers asked for.
  5. Pay the fee. Pay once against the application number and save the receipt that opens after payment.
  6. Print the acknowledgement. Keep the slip and book an RTO slot if your state still asks for one.

Photo and signature uploads

Only some states ask for a fresh photo and signature upload during renewal. Others take the photo from Aadhaar e-KYC or from your earlier record. Use a plain light background and a recent picture if the upload screen appears.

Can I renew my DL online without visiting the RTO?

Yes, you can renew your DL online without a visit if you choose the Aadhaar-based option and your details match. The Aadhaar OTP stands in for the counter check, so the RTO approves the file remotely and posts the card to the address on record.

Who qualifies

The contactless route is meant for a renewal where no driving test is needed. In practice that means a licence that is current, or expired for less than a year, held by someone whose Aadhaar name and date of birth match the licence.

What still needs a visit

A long-lapsed licence, a mismatch in personal details, or a request the RTO flags for verification will need an appointment. People without Aadhaar can still renew by visiting the office with another identity document.

Licence renewal process with Aadhaar: how does contactless renewal work?

In the Aadhaar licence renewal process, Sarathi sends an OTP to your Aadhaar-linked mobile, pulls your name, photo and address from UIDAI with your consent, and attaches them to the application. The RTO then approves the file without seeing you in person.

The 2021 and 2022 notifications

The first MoRTH notification, effective 3 March 2021, listed 18 contactless licence and registration services, including renewal. A later notification in September 2022 widened the list to 58 services. Aadhaar use remains voluntary.

How to apply for renewal of driving licence at the RTO?

To apply for renewal of driving licence at the RTO, fill the application on Sarathi first, choose the non-Aadhaar option, pay the fee and book a slot. On the appointment day, take the printed acknowledgement, the original licence and the supporting papers to the counter.

At the counter

An official checks the originals, takes your photo and signature if needed and may ask a few questions.

Paper licences

Very old handwritten or booklet licences may not be in Sarathi. The RTO first creates a backlog entry from your original licence and office records, then processes the renewal.

What is the DL renewal process after you submit?

After you submit, the DL renewal process moves through scrutiny, approval, card printing and dispatch. The RTO checks your form and medical papers, approves the renewal in Sarathi, and sends the new card to your registered address, usually by speed post.

Timeline of the driving licence renewal window from one year before to after expiry
There is no longer a 30-day period of legal driving after expiry.

Status stages to expect

You may see stages such as fee received, document scrutiny, approved and dispatched. The record in the national register updates at approval, which is when DigiLocker can fetch the new validity date.

Which documents required for DL renewal?

The documents required for DL renewal are Form 9, your current licence, Form 1 or Form 1A, proof of address and age (Aadhaar covers both), and a recent photograph if your state asks for one. Online applicants upload scans; office applicants bring originals.

Driving licence renewal documents required at the counter

For an office visit, the driving licence renewal documents required are the originals of the above plus self-attested copies. Carry the printed acknowledgement and fee receipt too. Without the receipt, the counter cannot link you to the payment.

Address proof choices

If you do not use Aadhaar, a passport, voter ID, utility bill or rent agreement is usually accepted. The list varies a little by state, so check the upload screen, which names the documents it will take.

What are the documents required for renewal of driving licence above 40?

The documents required for renewal of driving licence after 40 are the same as for younger drivers plus a Form 1A medical certificate. A registered medical practitioner examines your eyesight and general fitness, fixes your photo to the form, signs and stamps it.

Form 1 self-declaration compared with Form 1A medical certificate for licence renewal
Age is counted on the date you apply, not when the licence was issued.

Getting Form 1A done

Any registered doctor can complete it; some states let doctors upload it directly to Sarathi. Our guide to the medical certificate Form 1A explains the examination and the common rejection reasons.

Which DL renewal form do you need?

The main DL renewal form is Form 9, the application for renewal of a driving licence. You fill it online on Sarathi. Alongside it you attach Form 1 or Form 1A for fitness. No separate printed form is needed unless your RTO asks for a signed copy.

License renewal application: how to fill it

The online license renewal application asks you to confirm personal details pulled from your record, choose renewal as the service, enter your current address and select the RTO.

What is the drivers license renewal application number used for?

Your drivers license renewal application number is the key to everything after you submit: paying the fee, uploading documents later, printing the acknowledgement, booking a slot and tracking progress. It is different from your licence number and appears on every page of the slip.

Tracking progress

Sarathi’s application status screen asks for this number and your date of birth. Our DL status guide explains what each status label means and how to read the stages.

Re-opening an unfinished form

If you closed the browser before paying, use the option to continue an application with this number. Starting a new one creates a duplicate, which the RTO may reject.

What are the DL renewal fees under Rule 32?

DL renewal fees come from Rule 32 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules: Rs 200 for renewal on time, and Rs 300 plus Rs 1,000 for each year or part of a year of delay after the grace period. A smart card adds Rs 200. States may add service or postal charges.

Extra for each year of delay or part of a yearRs 1,000
Licence issued as a smart cardRs 200 extra

Why your total may differ

The final screen adds state charges such as smart card, service or postal fees. The amount shown before payment is the one you pay; do not rely on a figure from a blog or an agent.

Expired dl renewal: which fee applies?

For an expired DL renewal, the late fee applies once you apply after the grace period: Rs 300 plus Rs 1,000 for each year or part of a year of delay.

Working out a late fee

Count the years from the expiry date to the application date, rounding a part year up. Sarathi does this calculation for you, so the amount on the payment screen is the one that counts.

Fines are separate

The late fee is not a fine. If you are stopped while driving on an expired licence, police can issue a challan for driving without a valid licence. Our page on the without licence fine lists the penalty.

What is the grace period for renewal of driving licence?

There is no longer a grace period for renewal of driving licence that lets you drive legally after expiry. Under the 2019 amendment you can still apply for renewal for up to one year after expiry at the normal process, but the licence is invalid from the expiry date until it is renewed.

What the old rule said

Before 2019, a licence stayed valid for 30 days after expiry, and a renewal within that time counted from the expiry date. That proviso was removed, and the renewal window was widened to a year on both sides.

Is there a grace period for driving license renewal after 2019?

Only for applying, not for driving. In 2026 the Delhi High Court held in Delhi Police v. Sudheer Kumar that the 30-day grace period for driving license renewal was deliberately removed and a renewal takes effect only from the date it is granted.

DL renewal after expiry: what changes after one year?

DL renewal after expiry is simple within a year. After more than a year, the licensing authority can make you pass a test of competence to drive before it renews.

The Kerala High Court ruling

In Sebastian Jacob v. Transport Commissioner (2024), the Kerala High Court upheld a state circular requiring a test for renewals applied for more than a year after expiry, relying on the proviso to section 15(4).

Not every state applies it the same way

The Supreme Court in a 2025 case read the 2019 changes to section 15 as being about the fee. Because readings differ, ask your RTO whether a test will be required before you book anything.

How to renew expired drivers license after many years?

To renew an expired drivers license after many years, apply on Sarathi under renewal, pay the late fee, attach Form 1A if you are 40 or older and book a slot. Be ready for a driving test. If the licence is not found online, the RTO will first create a record from the original.

If you have lost the old card

You will need proof of the licence, such as a photocopy, a DL extract or an old DigiLocker copy. Without any proof, the RTO may treat you as a new applicant who must start again with a learner’s licence.

Expired license: can you drive while renewal is pending?

No. With an expired license, you cannot legally drive even while your renewal is pending, because the new validity starts only when the authority grants the renewal.

Expired drivers license: what are the risks?

Driving on an expired drivers license can bring a challan for driving without a valid licence, problems with an insurance claim and, for job applicants, a missed eligibility date, as the Delhi Police case above shows.

How to stay covered

Apply a few weeks before expiry so approval comes in time. Keep the acknowledgement handy, but remember it is proof of an application, not a licence to drive.

How to check driving licence expiry date?

To check your driving licence expiry date, read the “valid till” line on the card, or search your licence on Sarathi with the DL number and date of birth. mParivahan and DigiLocker show the same date on your phone.

Using the national register

The Sarathi licence search shows the non-transport and transport validity separately. Our guide to the online licence check walks through the search screen field by field.

License expiry date: how is validity worked out by age?

Your new license expiry date depends on your age on the date of renewal, not on the original issue date. A private licence renewed under 30 runs until age 40; between 30 and 50 it runs for 10 years; and shorter periods apply after 50.

Licence expiry date rules by age group after a renewal under the 2019 amendment
Age on the date of renewal decides the new expiry date.
Age on the date of renewalRenewed licence is valid
Under 30Until the holder turns 40

50 to 55Until the holder turns 60
Over 55For 5 years

An example

Someone renewing at 45 gets a licence valid for 10 years, until 55. At 55 they renew again and, being 55, get validity until 60 or for five years depending on which band applies on that date.

Transport licences

Licences for taxis, trucks and buses follow shorter periods and stricter medical rules. The RTO counter or the Sarathi fee screen will show the validity your class receives.

Driving licence renewal after 50 years of age: what is different?

For driving licence renewal after 50 years of age, the renewed licence is valid only until you turn 60 (if you renew between 50 and 55) or for five years after that. A Form 1A medical certificate is required every time, so renewals come round more often.

Eyesight and fitness

The doctor checks vision, hearing and reflexes. If you wear glasses, the certificate may note it and the licence can carry a condition to drive with corrective lenses.

Planning ahead

Because each renewal after 55 lasts five years, set your reminders early and keep a digital copy of every Form 1A for reference, even though a new one is needed each time.

Two wheeler licence renewal: is it different from a car licence?

No. Two wheeler licence renewal follows the same process, form and fee as a car licence. A licence that carries both MCWG and LMV classes is renewed together in one application, and the new card lists every class with the new validity date.

Two wheeler license renewal for learner holders

A learner’s licence cannot be renewed through this process. If you only hold a learner’s licence for a scooter or bike that has expired, you need a fresh learner’s licence and then a driving test.

Can I renew my licence online with a transport class?

Yes, you can renew your licence online with a transport class on Sarathi, but expect stricter checks. Transport licences need a Form 1A medical certificate at every renewal, regardless of age, and some states also ask for a refresher course or an in-person check.

Driving license renewal TN and transport classes

Tamil Nadu and several other states treat transport licence renewals with extra scrutiny and may need your badge details. Check the documents list your state’s screen shows before you pay.

How does licence update work alongside renewal?

A licence update, such as a new address, can often be added to the renewal application in the same Sarathi session. Each extra service has its own fee and supporting document, but you get one card that reflects both changes.

Can you update drivers license address at renewal?

Yes, most states let you update drivers license address at renewal. Pick the change of address service along with renewal and upload new address proof. Our guide on how to change address on driving licence covers it in detail.

License update online: what else can you change?

Other license update online services include replacing a damaged card and updating the mobile number. A name change needs supporting documents and is usually handled as its own service rather than inside a renewal.

How to renew my driving licence when the card is lost?

If you want to renew my driving licence but the card is lost, apply for renewal with the licence number and date of birth; the card itself is not needed online. If you cannot find the number, look in DigiLocker or old copies first.

Lost and expired together

Renewal will produce a new card, so a separate duplicate is often unnecessary. If the RTO asks, add a copy of the police report or a lost-card declaration.

When the number is lost too

Search old photos, scans and SMS messages. The issuing RTO can find the record from your name and date of birth if you visit with ID.

How long does license renewal take?

License renewal time depends on your state and route. An online file with matching Aadhaar details is often approved without any visit, while card printing and postal delivery add more time. Applications that need verification, a test or a record fix take longest.

Using the virtual licence meanwhile

Once approved, fetch the renewed licence in DigiLocker or add it in mParivahan. The digital copy is valid to show police while you wait for the card.

Driving license renewal Delhi: how does it work?

Driving license renewal Delhi runs on Sarathi under the Delhi Transport Department. Since August 2021 Delhi has offered faceless services, so renewal is completed online with Aadhaar and the card is posted. An office visit is needed only for tests and special cases.

Comparison of online licence renewal with Aadhaar and renewal in person at the RTO
Both routes use the same Sarathi application and the same fees.

Licence renewal Delhi offices

For licence renewal Delhi applicants who cannot use Aadhaar, zonal transport offices handle the RTO route. Book the appointment through Sarathi after paying, and take the originals listed on the screen.

DL renewal Delhi: where to go if online fails

If the DL renewal Delhi form will not open your record, the licence may not have been migrated. Visit the zonal office that issued it, or the one for your current address, with your old licence for a record update.

Online renewal of driving licence in Delhi: what are the steps?

Online renewal of driving licence in Delhi follows the national Sarathi steps: choose Delhi, open the licence services menu, choose renewal, enter the DL number and date of birth, pick the Aadhaar option, upload Form 1 or 1A and pay.

Online renewal of driving license in Delhi without Aadhaar

For online renewal of driving license in Delhi without Aadhaar, you fill the same form online but select the non-Aadhaar option and attend an office slot for document checks.

Delhi status checks

Use the same application number for status checks in Sarathi. Keep the mobile number in the application current, because OTPs and any messages about the file go to it.

License renewal Delhi fees: what do you pay?

License renewal Delhi fees on the Delhi transport department page are Rs 400 within the grace period and Rs 1,500 after it. The page still uses the term grace period, which now refers to the renewal window rather than legal driving after expiry. The payment screen shows the final amount for your case.

Drivers license renewal near me: how to find your RTO?

To find drivers license renewal near me, let Sarathi choose for you: after selecting your state, the form lists licensing offices, and you pick the one that covers your address.

Online first

Most people no longer need an office. Try the Aadhaar route first and visit only if the portal books you an appointment.

Avoid look-alike sites

Search results often show private sites with renewal forms. Only sarathi.parivahan.gov.in and your state’s official transport site handle real applications.

Indian driving license renewal from abroad: is it possible?

An Indian driving license renewal from abroad is possible only where the online route lets you finish with Aadhaar e-KYC and a doctor’s Form 1A, if needed, without a visit. If the RTO asks for an appointment, someone cannot attend for you, so you may need to wait until you are in India.

What to check first

Make sure your Aadhaar-linked mobile can receive OTPs abroad, and that the delivery address is one where someone can receive the card. Medical certificates must be from a doctor registered in India.

Vehicle license renewal: is it the DL or the RC?

Vehicle license renewal is a phrase people use for two different things: renewing your driving licence, covered on this page, or renewing a vehicle’s registration certificate. Private vehicle RCs are renewed after 15 years on Vahan, not Sarathi.

Common expired DL renewal problems on Sarathi and how to fix each one
Paying twice for one application is the most costly slip.

Renewing the RC instead

If you mean the vehicle’s papers, see our guide to car registration validity, which explains renewal of registration, fitness tests and fees.

DL and vehicle registration are separate systems

A licence belongs to the driver and sits in Sarathi. A registration belongs to the vehicle and sits in Vahan. Renewing one never renews the other.

Parivahan site vehicle details: where do you find them?

Parivahan site vehicle details, such as owner name, registration date and insurance validity, come from Vahan, not from licence renewal. On the Parivahan site they are under vehicle-related services or the Know Your Vehicle Details search.

Why this matters for renewal

Licence renewal never asks for your vehicle number. If a form asks for one, you are on the wrong service or a fake site.

What are common DL renewal mistakes and fixes?

The most common DL renewal mistakes are paying twice, uploading an old or blurry Form 1A, choosing the wrong state or RTO, and waiting until after expiry.

Do's and don'ts for the licence renewal process, timing and safe online payment
Starting early is the simplest way to avoid every late charge.

Mistakes with money

Never pay a second time if the receipt does not appear. Use Payment Status to fetch it.

Mistakes with records

If your Aadhaar and licence details differ, fix the mismatch before you choose the Aadhaar route. Otherwise the application can be rejected after you have paid.

DL renewal questions

Does DL renewal change my licence number?

No. The licence number stays the same for life. Renewal only updates the validity date and, where needed, the photo and card.

Can I renew my licence in a different state?

Yes. Choose the state where you now live on Sarathi. The licensing authority there can renew a licence issued elsewhere, and you can record your new address in the same application.

How early can I apply for renewal?

Up to one year before the expiry date. Applying early does not shorten the new validity period, which is worked out from the rules for your age.

Is a driving test needed for renewal?

Not for a normal renewal. The licensing authority can ask for a test of competence when the application is made more than one year after expiry.

Who needs a Form 1A medical certificate?

Applicants aged 40 or above, and holders of a transport licence. Others sign the Form 1 self-declaration of physical fitness.

Can I renew online if my Aadhaar details do not match?

The contactless route depends on Aadhaar e-KYC matching your licence record. If the name or date of birth differs, apply through the RTO route or correct the record first.

Will I get a new physical card?

Yes. The RTO prints a new smart card with the new validity date, usually sent by post. A virtual licence appears in DigiLocker and mParivahan once the record updates.

Can I drive while my renewal application is pending?

Not once the old licence has expired. The renewed licence is valid from the date it is granted, so apply before expiry to stay covered.

What if I paid but the receipt did not appear?

Do not pay again. Use the Payment Status option on Sarathi with your application number to fetch the receipt. A payment is accepted against an application number only once.

Are all vehicle classes renewed together?

Yes. A renewal covers every non-transport class on the licence, such as MCWG and LMV. Transport classes follow their own validity and medical rules.

Can an agent renew my licence for me?

You can take help, but you do not need an agent. The official fee is shown on Sarathi before you pay, and you should never share Aadhaar OTPs with anyone.

Is a renewed licence valid in DigiLocker?

Yes. A licence fetched in DigiLocker or shown in mParivahan is accepted as a valid document. Re-fetch it after renewal so the new validity date shows.
