International driving license India: how to get your IDP from the RTO
An international driving license India issues is officially an International Driving Permit (IDP). Apply to the RTO that covers your address, online through Sarathi or at the counter, with Form 4A, a valid Indian licence, passport, visa, a Form 1A medical certificate and three photos. The reported central fee is Rs 1,000, and the permit lasts up to one year.
Key takeaways
- The international driving permit is a translation booklet in Form 6A; it works abroad only alongside your Indian licence.
- Apply at the RTO covering your address, starting online on Sarathi in most states, with Form 4A and a Form 1A medical certificate.
- The reported central fee is Rs 1,000; doctors, photos and state service charges add a little more.
- Validity is one year at most, and the permit ends earlier if your Indian licence expires first.
- Websites that sell an 'IDP' online are not Indian licensing authorities; only an RTO or an authorised automobile association can issue one.
- Dubai and other UAE emirates set their own rules for visitors; check the current list on the Dubai RTA site before you fly.

What is an international driving license in India?
An international driving license in India is the common name for the International Driving Permit (IDP). It is a booklet that translates the details of your Indian licence into a standard format so police and rental firms abroad can read it. It is issued by a licensing authority, which means your RTO.

A translation, not a new licence
The permit does not test or license you again. It repeats what your Indian card already says, in a form other countries recognise. That is why you must carry both together: the permit alone has no value without the licence it translates.
Who can apply
Any Indian citizen holding a valid permanent driving licence can apply. Central rule 2(t) defines the permit as a licence issued under Chapter II of the Motor Vehicles Act, and it excludes countries with which India has no diplomatic relations.
International driving permit: what does the IDP booklet contain?
The international driving permit is printed in Form 6A under CMVR rule 16(4). It shows your name, photo, date and place of birth, address, the issuing authority, the vehicle categories you may drive and the validity dates. The entries repeat across pages in several languages.
Pages and languages
The cover carries the issuing country’s language, and the inside pages repeat the same headings in other languages, with the final pages in French, the language used by the road traffic conventions. Officers abroad read the category boxes, not your Indian card.
Vehicle categories
Categories follow your Indian classes. LMV maps to the car category and MCWG to motorcycles. A category that is not on your Indian licence cannot appear on the permit, so add any missing class at home first.
How to get international driving license in India?
To get an international driving license in India, apply to the RTO that covers your current address with Form 4A, your licence, passport, visa, Form 1A medical certificate, photos and the fee. Most states let you start online on Sarathi and finish with a short office visit.
What the RTO checks
The officer confirms that your licence is valid and genuine, that your passport name matches the licence, and that you are actually travelling. Visa or ticket details serve as that proof. A mismatch at any of these points is the usual reason for delay.
Where it fits in your trip plan
Apply two to four weeks before departure. That covers slot waiting, a doctor’s visit for Form 1A and any record correction. Remember that the clock starts on the issue date, so applying many months early wastes validity.
How to apply for IDP in India online?
To apply for an IDP in India online, use the Sarathi portal: choose your state, open the licence services menu, select the international permit option, enter your DL number and date of birth, fill Form 4A, upload papers and pay. Some states then ask you to attend a slot.
- Pick your state. Open sarathi.parivahan.gov.in and select the state where your licence record sits now.
- Choose the IDP service. Under driving licence services, pick the option to apply for an International Driving Permit.
- Enter licence details. Type your DL number and date of birth, then check that the record shown is yours.
- Fill Form 4A and upload papers. Add passport and visa details and upload the passport, visa, Form 1A and a photo.
- Pay the fee. Pay online once and keep the receipt with the application number.
- Visit the RTO or wait for post. Attend the slot if one is booked and collect the permit booklet.
International driving permit apply online: which portal?
For an international driving permit apply online request, the national Sarathi portal run by NIC for MoRTH is the right place in nearly every state. Parivahan Sewa links to the same service. Avoid search ads that look like portals; they are private sites.
After you submit
Note the application number. It lets you check status, reprint the form and recover a payment that did not show a receipt. Bring the printed acknowledgement to any appointment.
How to apply for international driving license in India at the RTO?
To apply for an international driving license in India at the RTO, collect a paper Form 4A or a printout, attach copies of your licence, passport and visa, add Form 1A and photos, and submit at the licensing counter. Pay the fee there and ask when to collect the booklet.
When the office route makes sense
Choose the counter if your licence is an old paper or booklet card not yet in Sarathi, if the portal shows no IDP option for your state, or if your details need correction. The officer can fix small issues in one visit.
What to expect on the day
Expect a document check, a photo or signature capture in some offices, and a fee receipt. Smaller RTOs sometimes print the permit the same day. Busy metro offices more often give a collection date or post it.
Documents required for international driving license: what to carry?
The documents required for international driving license applications come from CMVR rule 14(2): a valid Indian licence, passport, visa where applicable, a Form 1A medical certificate, three passport-size photos, proof of Indian nationality and the fee. Carry originals and self-attested copies.

| Document | Why the RTO asks for it | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Form 4A | The application itself | Print it from Sarathi after filling |
| Indian driving licence | The IDP translates it | Must stay valid for your trip |
| Passport | Proof of nationality and name | Name should match the licence |
| Visa or e-visa | Shows you are travelling | Add the visa page copy |
| Form 1A | Medical fitness | Signed by a registered doctor |
| Three photos | Booklet and file | Recent, plain background |
| Air ticket | Extra proof asked by some RTOs | An itinerary also works |
Proof that differs by state
Some offices also ask for address or age proof even though the licence already holds these details. Aadhaar, passport or voter ID usually satisfies both. Check the upload screen, which lists what your state accepts.
Self-attestation
Sign each copy and write “self-attested” with the date. Keep originals in hand at the counter; officers compare them and return them to you.
International driving license India fees: what is the official charge?
The international driving license India fees under central rule 32 are reported at Rs 1,000 for issuing the permit. Older copies of the rule show Rs 500, before the 2016 fee revision. States may add service, smart card or postal charges, shown on the payment screen.

| Item | Central amount |
|---|---|
| Issue of an International Driving Permit (reported current fee) | Rs 1,000 |
| Same item in the original rule 32 text | Rs 500 |
| Renewal of your Indian licence, if it expires within the year | Rs 200 |
| Smart card charge, if the renewed licence is printed as a card | Rs 200 |
Paying the right amount
Pay only through Sarathi or the RTO counter, and only the sum shown there. Do not pay twice if a receipt is slow to appear. Use the payment status option with your application number instead.
International license price: why do quotes differ?
The international license price you see quoted online varies because many sites mix the official RTO fee with agent fees or sell unofficial booklets. The RTO fee is fixed by the rules; anything above it is either a state charge on the payment screen or a private service charge.
Agent and consultant fees
Agents charge for filling forms and booking slots. That is optional. The online form takes about fifteen minutes if your documents are ready, and the fee screen shows the total before payment.
Online “IDP” sellers
Some websites sell a printed booklet called an international driving document. It is not an IDP issued by an Indian licensing authority and may be refused by police or rental firms abroad. Only an RTO, or an automobile association authorised under rule 16(5), can issue the real one.
International driving permit cost: what else adds to the bill?
The full international driving permit cost includes small extras beyond the fee: a doctor’s charge for Form 1A, passport photos, printing, and travel to the RTO. If your licence needs renewal first, add that fee too. Most travellers spend little beyond the official charge.
Medical certificate charge
A registered doctor signs Form 1A after a basic check of eyesight and general fitness. Charges are set by the clinic, not the government. Some RTOs have doctors nearby; any registered practitioner can sign.
Hidden costs to avoid
Avoid paying for “express” processing. There is no official premium service. Missing a slot can cost a second trip, so pick a date you can keep.
International driving licence validity: how long does it last?
International driving licence validity is at most one year from the date of issue under rule 16(4), or until your Indian licence expires if that comes first. The permit cannot be extended. When it lapses, you apply for a fresh one with a new Form 4A.

| Format or rule | Validity |
|---|---|
| Indian IDP under CMVR rule 16(4) | Up to 1 year, or until the Indian licence expires |
| 1949 Geneva Convention format | 1 year from issue |
| 1968 Vienna Convention format | Up to 3 years, or until the home licence expires |
Check your Indian licence first
Look at the validity date on your card or in DigiLocker. If it ends during your trip, start with a DL renewal and apply for the permit only after the new date shows on your record.
Country limits on stay
Many countries also cap how long a visitor may drive on a foreign permit, often counted from the date of entry. Japan, for example, allows up to one year from entry while both documents stay valid. Long-term residents usually need a local licence.
How long does the RTO take to issue an IDP?
Secondary sources report that an RTO issues the permit within two to five working days after approval, and some offices print it during the visit. The wait depends on slot availability and whether your documents need a second look. Track it with the application number.
Plan for slot availability
Metro offices can have slots booked a week or more ahead. Start the online form early and pick the earliest slot you can attend.
If it takes too long
Ask the RTO counter or the state transport helpline about the status, quoting the application number. Do not file a second application, which only creates a duplicate record.
Form 4A international driving license: what goes in the form?
Form 4A international driving license is the application for the permit. It asks for your name, address, date and place of birth, licence number and issuing authority, passport and visa details, the countries you plan to visit and the vehicle classes needed. You sign a declaration at the end.
Filling it without errors
Copy your name exactly as in your passport. Write licence and passport numbers without spaces, and match the issue dates to the documents. A single digit wrong sends the file back.
Online and paper versions
The online form fills Form 4A for you from your licence record. A paper copy is still useful at the counter; print the online version rather than an old format from the internet.
Form 7 DL: how does your smart card licence fit in?
Form 7 is the format for a driving licence printed as a smart card in India. If your licence is a Form 7 card, the RTO reads its details directly from Sarathi. An older laminated or booklet licence may need to be entered into the system before an IDP can be issued.
Smart card and DigiLocker
Your Form 7 card and the DigiLocker copy carry the same record. Abroad, however, carry the physical card, because police in other countries may not accept a phone image. Learn more on the smart card driving licence page.
Old licences
If your licence predates Sarathi, ask the RTO to update the record or issue a smart card first. It is a one-time job.
International driving permit India sample: what does it look like?
An international driving permit India sample looks like a small grey or white booklet with “International Driving Permit” on the cover, the issuing authority’s name and stamp, your photo inside and boxes for vehicle categories. The issue date and validity date appear on the first inside pages.
What to check when you collect it
Check your name, photo, date of birth and categories before leaving the counter. Make sure the stamp and signature are present and the expiry date matches the rule: one year or your licence expiry, whichever is earlier.
Copies of samples online
Sample images online vary by year and office. Use them only to understand the layout, never as a template to print your own.
Can I drive in Dubai with Indian license?
Can I drive in Dubai with Indian license alone is a question the UAE answers, not India. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority keeps a list of countries whose visitors may drive on a home licence. If India is not on the current list, carry an IDP with your Indian card.
Rental cars
Rental firms in Dubai follow the RTA rule and their insurer’s terms. Most ask for the passport, visa, Indian licence and IDP. Ask the rental company in writing before you book.
Checking the latest rule
UAE rules for visitors change from time to time. Check rta.ae or the rental company before you fly, and do not rely on old forum posts.
International driving license Dubai: visitor or resident?
For an international driving license Dubai trip, your status matters. A tourist or business visitor can use the IDP with an Indian licence where the RTA allows it. Once you hold a UAE residence visa, you need a UAE driving licence, and the IDP no longer covers you.
Moving to the UAE for work
New residents apply for a UAE licence through the emirate’s licensing authority. Holders of licences from some countries can exchange them; others take lessons and a test. Confirm which group India falls in on the official RTA site.
Abu Dhabi and other emirates
Each emirate has its own police and licensing office, but visitor rules are broadly aligned across the UAE. Check the emirate you will drive in.
International driving license Kerala: how do Kerala RTOs handle it?
An international driving license Kerala application goes through the Kerala Motor Vehicles Department on Sarathi. Choose Kerala as the state, apply online and attend the RTO or sub-RTO covering your address, such as KL-01 Thiruvananthapuram, KL-07 Ernakulam or KL-11 Kozhikode.
Gulf travellers from Kerala
Kerala has many Gulf-bound travellers, so offices are familiar with the process. Carry the visa page and your employment or visit papers, since officers often ask about the purpose of travel.
Where to find your RTO
The office code on your licence, such as KL-08 for Thrissur, tells you where your record started. Apply where you live now if you have moved within Kerala.
International driving license Mumbai: which RTO do you visit?
For an international driving license Mumbai request, apply on Sarathi with Maharashtra as the state and attend the RTO that covers your address. The city is split between several offices, each with its own code and area.
| Code | Mumbai office |
|---|---|
| MH-01 | Mumbai Central (Tardeo) |
| MH-02 | Mumbai West (Andheri) |
| MH-03 | Mumbai East (Wadala) |
| MH-47 | Mumbai North (Borivali) |
| MH-43 | Navi Mumbai (Nerul) |
Slots in Mumbai
Mumbai offices are busy. Book the earliest slot after filling the form, and reach early with all originals. Thane and Navi Mumbai residents use their own offices.
International driving license Delhi: where do you apply?
An international driving license Delhi application starts on Sarathi with Delhi as the state and goes to the zonal licensing office that covers your address. Delhi moved most transport services to a faceless online model in 2021, so an office visit is needed only where the system asks for one.
Haryana and the NCR
For an international driving permit in Haryana, such as for residents of Gurugram or Faridabad, choose Haryana on Sarathi and apply to the licensing authority for your district. Do not apply in Delhi if your licence and address are in Haryana.
Proof of address in the NCR
Many NCR residents hold a licence from another state. Apply in the state where you live now, and update the address on your licence first if needed.
International driving license Ahmedabad: what is the Gujarat process?
For an international driving license Ahmedabad application, choose Gujarat on Sarathi and attend the RTO that covers your address, such as GJ-01 Ahmedabad (West) at Subhash Bridge. The documents, Form 4A and central fee are the same as elsewhere in India.
Other Gujarat cities
Surat, Vadodara and Rajkot residents follow the same online process with their own district office. The office code on your licence shows where your record started.
Students going abroad
Students heading overseas often need the permit for the first months. Bring the admission letter along with the visa; it helps explain the purpose of travel.
International drivers license online: can it be done fully online?
An international drivers license online application covers the form, uploads and payment, but the permit itself is a printed booklet, so most people still collect it from the RTO or receive it by post. A few states complete approval without a visit; most book a short appointment.
| Step | Online on Sarathi | At the RTO counter |
|---|---|---|
| Form 4A | Filled from your licence record | Paper form |
| Documents | Uploaded scans | Originals and copies |
| Payment | Online receipt | Counter receipt |
| Collection | Post or visit, by state | Usually the same office |
Why an office visit remains
The officer may want to see the original passport and visa, take a photo, or hand over the booklet in person. Ask your state’s portal page what it requires.

Signs of a fake online service
A site that promises to deliver an “Indian IDP” without your licence number, Sarathi application or RTO is not official. The real process always runs through your state transport department.
How to make international driving license in India without an agent?
To make an international driving license in India without an agent, prepare your papers first, fill the Sarathi form yourself, pay only on the official screen and attend the slot. The process has six short steps, and every screen tells you what it needs.
A simple checklist before you begin
Scan your passport, visa page, licence and Form 1A in clear colour. Keep a photo file ready, check your licence validity, and confirm your mobile number on the licence record works for OTPs.
When help is worth it
Help from a family member is useful if you are unsure about uploads. Paid agents are never required, and you should not share Aadhaar OTPs with anyone.

International drivers license application: why do RTOs reject it?
An international drivers license application is usually returned for four reasons: the Indian licence expires soon, the visa is missing, the name differs between passport and licence, or the licence record is not in Sarathi. Each has a simple fix before you reapply.

Name mismatches
If your passport shows a full name and your licence an initial, correct the licence first. Small spelling differences also cause trouble abroad, where officers compare documents carefully.
Expiring licence
Because the permit cannot outlast the licence, an RTO may refuse it if your licence ends in a few weeks. Renew first and apply for the permit on the renewed record.
Licence and license: which spelling is right?
The licence and license question is about spelling, not law. In Indian and British English, “licence” is the noun and “license” the verb. American English uses “license” for both. Indian government documents mostly use “licence”, while searches and many websites use “license”.
Why both appear on this site
People search in both spellings, so you will see “licence” and “license” here. They mean the same document; nothing changes in the rules or forms.
On official forms
Sarathi forms and the Motor Vehicles Act use “driving licence”. Use that spelling in letters to the RTO.
Drivers permit and permit license: what do the terms mean?
A drivers permit usually means a driving licence in North American English, and in India people sometimes use it for the IDP. A permit license can also mean the permit a commercial vehicle needs to carry goods or passengers. Those are different documents with different rules.
Driver permit vs vehicle permit
A driver’s licence or IDP authorises a person to drive. A national or state permit authorises a vehicle to operate commercially. Do not confuse the two when asking an RTO for help.
Learner’s permit
Some people call a learner’s licence a “learner’s permit”. In India it is formally a learner’s licence in Form 3, valid for six months.
Driving license medical: when is Form 1A needed?
A driving license medical certificate in Form 1A is needed for an IDP under rule 14(2), for any licence applicant aged 40 or above, and for transport licences. A registered medical practitioner examines you and signs the form, which you upload or hand in.
What the doctor checks
The doctor checks eyesight, hearing, limbs and general fitness to drive, and fixes your photo on the form. It is a short examination, not a hospital test.
Where to learn more
The medical certificate Form 1A page explains the form section by section.
Self-declaration of fitness in Form 1: who signs it?
Form 1 is the self-declaration of physical fitness signed by the applicant. It is used by private licence applicants below 40 for a learner’s licence, a licence or a renewal. You tick answers about conditions such as epilepsy, giddiness or poor eyesight and sign it yourself.
Form 1 and the IDP
For the international permit, rule 14(2) asks for a Form 1A medical certificate, so a Form 1 declaration alone may not be enough. Ask your RTO if you are under 40 and unsure.
Honest answers matter
A false declaration can make the licence liable to cancellation. If you have a condition, declare it and get a doctor’s opinion.
Madhya Pradesh licence renewal: what is different?
Madhya Pradesh licence renewal runs on the national Sarathi portal like most states. Choose Madhya Pradesh, open the renewal service, enter your licence number and date of birth, and follow the screens. The central fee rules apply, and the state may add service charges shown before payment.
MP specifics
Check the upload list on the MP screen, as some states also ask for a photo and signature. If your licence is an old manual one, the RTO may need to enter it into the system first.
Before an IDP
If you plan to travel and your MP licence is due, renew first. The permit can only run as long as the licence.
Driving license renewal Bihar: what are the steps?
Driving license renewal Bihar also runs on Sarathi. Select Bihar, choose renewal, enter your licence number and date of birth, upload Form 1 or Form 1A as your age requires, pay and print the acknowledgement. The district transport office then approves the file.
Aadhaar e-KYC
If your Aadhaar details match the licence, Bihar renewals can usually be done without an office visit through Aadhaar authentication. If not, book a slot at the district office.
Late renewal
If the licence expired more than a year ago, expect a driving test and late charges. See the DL renewal guide for the central rules.
Renew driving license online Gujarat: what are the steps?
To renew driving license online in Gujarat, choose Gujarat on Sarathi, open renewal, enter your licence details, upload the medical or self-declaration form, pay and print the slip. For driving license renewal Gujarat at the office, take the slip and originals to your RTO.
Gujarat office codes
Your licence number begins with GJ and the office code, such as GJ-01 for Ahmedabad (West). That tells the system which record to open.
Address changes
If you moved within Gujarat or from another state, update the address in the same visit where the screen allows it.
Changing licence details online: which fields can you edit?
You can change your address, mobile number and some personal details on a licence online through Sarathi. Name and date of birth corrections usually need supporting documents and RTO approval. Updating the record before an IDP application avoids mismatches with your passport.
Address and mobile
Address changes need proof of the new address. A mobile number update needs OTP verification. Read the driving licence address change guide for the steps.
Name and date of birth
These need documents such as a passport or birth certificate. Expect an RTO check, so allow extra time before travel.
Duplicate driving license Kerala, Maharashtra and Karnataka: how to apply?
A duplicate driving license in Kerala, Maharashtra or Karnataka is requested on Sarathi with your state selected, using the duplicate licence service. You enter the licence number, give the reason (lost, stolen or damaged), upload a police report where asked, pay and attend the RTO if needed.
State differences
Duplicate driving license Kerala requests go to the Kerala MVD office covering your address; duplicate driving license Maharashtra and duplicate driving licence Karnataka requests follow the same screens on their state pages. Fees and police report rules vary a little, so check the screen.
Full process
The lost driving licence guide covers the duplicate process step by step.
Lost driving license Delhi: what should you do first?
For a lost driving license Delhi case, first report the loss to Delhi Police online and save the report. Then apply for a duplicate on Sarathi with Delhi as the state. Meanwhile, a DigiLocker copy is accepted as a valid licence during checks in India.
Before travel abroad
A duplicate takes time to print. If you need an IDP soon, apply for the duplicate first, as the RTO needs a valid record to issue the permit.
Avoid misuse
Report the loss quickly so any misuse of the old card is on record.
Learners license expired: can you still renew it?
When a learners license expired after its six months, most states ask you to apply for a fresh learner’s licence and retake the online test. The central rules mention renewal of a learner’s licence in Form 2, but in practice Sarathi often treats it as a new application.
LLR renewal online
For LLR renewal online, open Sarathi, select your state and look for the learner’s licence services. If renewal is not offered, apply afresh. Book the driving test within the six months next time.
Why it matters for an IDP
A learner’s licence never qualifies for an international permit. You need the permanent licence first.
Necessity of driving license: what does the law say?
The necessity of driving license comes from section 3 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988: no one may drive a motor vehicle in a public place without an effective licence. A transport vehicle needs a licence that covers it. Section 5 bars owners from letting unlicensed people drive.
Owner’s liability
If you lend your vehicle to someone without a licence, you can be penalised along with the driver. Insurers can also reject claims when the driver had no valid licence.
Abroad
The same principle applies overseas. Driving on an expired IDP or without your Indian card counts as driving without a valid licence there.
Driving without a license: what is the penalty?
Driving without a license in India carries a fine of up to Rs 5,000 under section 181 of the Motor Vehicles Act, as amended in 2019. States may set lower compounding amounts. Section 182 allows up to Rs 10,000 for driving while disqualified.
| Offence | Section | Central penalty |
|---|---|---|
| Driving without a licence | 181 | Up to Rs 5,000 |
| Driving while disqualified | 182 | Up to Rs 10,000 |
State fines
See the without licence fine page for state amounts and how to pay a challan.
Under-age driving
Letting a minor drive is treated more strictly, and the vehicle’s owner or guardian can face prosecution.
Driving school license: who can run a driving school?
A driving school license is required for anyone running a paid driving school. Under CMVR rule 24, the school applies to the licensing authority in Form 12 and receives a licence in Form 11, valid for five years. Instructors need at least a 10th-standard pass and five years of driving experience.
Renewal of a school licence
A school applies for renewal in Form 13 at least sixty days before its licence expires. The authority checks premises, vehicles, equipment and staff before renewing.
Training centres that run their own tests
Since 1 July 2021, accredited driver training centres can test their own trainees. Those who pass are exempt from the RTO driving test.
Driving license news: what changed recently?
Recent driving license news in India includes the 2021 accredited training centre rules, contactless Aadhaar-based licence services, a 2024 Supreme Court ruling on LMV licences and transport vehicles, and a 2026 Delhi High Court ruling on renewal after expiry. None of these changed the IDP process.
Courts and licences
In November 2024 the Supreme Court held that an LMV licence covers transport vehicles under 7,500 kg. In 2026 the Delhi High Court held that a renewed licence is valid only from the date of renewal.
Online services
From March 2021, 18 licence and registration services went contactless with Aadhaar, extended to 58 services in September 2022.

Driving licence news for travellers
Rules abroad change too. Before each trip, check the destination country’s rules for foreign drivers and the Indian driving licence valid countries guide.

For city-specific steps, see international driving permit Bangalore, and for the wider picture of licence services, the driving licence guide. If you want a broader look at permits for foreign countries, the international drivers license page compares them.

Is an international driving license and an international driving permit the same thing?
Yes, in India. People search for an international driving licence, but the document an RTO issues is called an International Driving Permit. It translates your Indian licence and does not replace it.
Can I apply for an IDP without a visa?
CMVR rule 14(2) lists a visa where applicable. If the country you are visiting does not need a visa for Indians, explain this at the RTO and carry your passport and ticket instead. Officers decide case by case.
Can I get an IDP on a learner's licence?
No. The permit is issued against a valid permanent driving licence. A learner's licence does not qualify, so finish the driving test first.
Does the IDP cover a motorcycle?
It covers the vehicle classes on your Indian licence. If your licence has MCWG, the permit can show the motorcycle category; if it has only LMV, it will show cars only.
How long does the RTO take to issue an IDP?
Secondary sources report two to five working days after approval, and some offices print it the same day you visit. Apply at least two weeks before travel to allow for slots and corrections.
Can someone else collect my IDP?
Rules vary by office. Many RTOs want the applicant present for photo and signature. Ask your office before sending a relative, and give them an authority letter and your ID copy if they allow it.
Can I apply for an IDP while I am already abroad?
The permit is issued by the licensing authority in India. Secondary sources say embassies can help with a lost or expired permit by coordinating with the issuing RTO, but processes differ, so contact the Indian mission and your RTO.
Is an IDP valid for driving in India?
No. An IDP is a document for use abroad. Inside India you drive on your Indian driving licence, physical or in DigiLocker.
What happens if my Indian licence expires while I am abroad?
The IDP stops being valid on the same day, because it cannot outlast the licence it translates. Renew the Indian licence before you leave if it expires within the year.
Do I need a fresh IDP for every trip?
Only when the old one has expired. A valid permit can be used on several trips within its validity, as long as your Indian licence also stays valid.
Can I convert my IDP into a foreign licence?
Not directly. Long-stay residents in most countries must apply for a local licence. Some countries let holders of an Indian licence skip parts of the test, so check that country's licensing authority.
What should I do if the IDP has a spelling mistake?
Return it to the issuing RTO quickly with the application slip and passport. The name must match your passport, or rental firms and police abroad may question it.
Parivahan Sewa (parivahansewa-in.com) is an independent information website and is not affiliated with MoRTH, Parivahan or any state transport department. Confirm fees and rules on the official portal before you pay or apply.
