Bangalore traffic fines: the Karnataka fine list, BTP checks and discount history

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 23 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

Bangalore traffic fines follow Karnataka's 2019 notifications on top of the central Motor Vehicles Act. Common amounts are Rs 500 for no helmet, signal jumping or a one-way breach, and Rs 1,000 for wrong parking or phone use, while drunk driving stays at Rs 10,000 through a court. Check pending notices by vehicle number on the BTP site, ASTraM or the KSP app.

Key takeaways

  • Karnataka cut several 2019 central fines: helmet and seat belt cases cost Rs 500 instead of Rs 1,000.
  • Serious offences such as drunk driving (Rs 10,000) and racing kept the full central amount.
  • Cameras record over 80% of violations in Bengaluru, so most notices arrive days after the trip.
  • Since towing returned in 2026, a parked car can cost Rs 2,000 once the towing fee is added.
  • The last 50% concession ran from 21 June to 10 July 2026; none was open on 30 October 2026.

What are Bangalore traffic fines?

Bangalore traffic fines are the penalties Bengaluru Traffic Police collect for breaking the Motor Vehicles Act and Karnataka’s own rules. The amounts start from the 2019 central Act, which Karnataka partly lowered by notification. Most notices are now generated by cameras and linked to the vehicle’s KA registration.

Fine or compounding fee

Legally, most city penalties are compounding fees: you accept the offence and pay a fixed sum instead of going to court. Offences such as drunk driving cannot be compounded at the counter and go before a magistrate.

Who pays

The notice is raised against the registered owner. If someone else was driving, the owner still sees the case and should settle it or point police to the driver.

Who runs Bengaluru city traffic police?

The Bengaluru city traffic police is a wing of the city police commissionerate, formed in 1930 and headed today by an Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic). It runs traffic police stations across the city and the Traffic Management Centre at the Ashok Nagar police complex, where camera feeds and reports are reviewed.

What the Traffic Management Centre does

Images from junction cameras, officer devices and citizen reports are validated at the centre before a notice is issued. Cases rejected there never reach your vehicle’s record.

Jurisdiction limits

The wing covers the city commissionerate area. Fines booked on highways or in neighbouring districts come from Karnataka State Police units instead.

Why does Bangalore traffic lead to so many fines?

Bangalore traffic is dense, and enforcement has shifted to cameras. Police say cameras now record over 80% of violations in the city. Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) and red-light violation detection (RLVD) cameras produce notices without an officer stopping anyone, so a single commute can create several cases.

More cameras, fewer stops

Because cameras do not wave you down, many owners learn about fines only when they search. A monthly check stops small notices piling up.

Repeat routes

Daily routes past the same junction can produce repeat notices for the same habit, such as stopping beyond the line. Each one is a separate case.

What does the Bangalore traffic fine list show in 2026?

The Bangalore traffic fine list below gathers the amounts most riders and drivers meet. It combines Karnataka’s July and September 2019 revisions with central figures where the state did not change them. Amounts can be revised, so treat your notice or the BTP site as final.

Karnataka traffic fine list: how do state amounts compare with central ones?

The Karnataka traffic fine list differs from the central schedule mainly in everyday offences. In September 2019 the state halved helmet and seat belt fines and cut licence, insurance and disobedience penalties, while racing and drunk driving stayed at central levels. The comparison below shows where the gap lies.

OffenceCentral 2019 ActKarnataka
No helmet₹1,000₹500

Key figures showing how the Karnataka traffic fine list cut central penalties in 2019
Serious offences kept the full central amount.

Why heavy goods vehicles pay more

Karnataka set the uninsured heavy goods vehicle fine by vehicle class, so it is higher than the flat central first-offence figure.

Where the central Act still rules

For sections the state did not notify, the motor vehicle act amounts apply as written.

What is on the Karnataka RTO fine list?

The Karnataka RTO fine list covers offences booked by transport department inspectors rather than traffic police: missing fitness certificates, unregistered vehicles, permit breaches and overloading. These usually go to court. Bengaluru’s 2019 revision set court fines for fitness and registration lapses, shown below.

Transport offenceFirst offenceLater offence
No fitness certificate₹2,000₹5,000
No registration₹5,000₹10,000
No number plate or an improper plate, all vehicles₹500–
Source: The News Minute: Bengaluru revision, July 2019, Bajaj General Karnataka fine guide. Checked October 2026.

Who books these cases

RTO flying squads and checkpost staff book them during vehicle checks, often for commercial vehicles.

Paying a transport fee

Some transport department payments run through the state treasury system; see our khajane 2 challan guide for how those receipts work.

What are BTP fines?

BTP fines are the cases booked by Bengaluru Traffic Police, the “BTP” printed on notices and on its apps. Each fine carries a notice number, the junction, the time, the offence code and, for camera cases, a photo. They are stored against the registration until paid or closed by a court.

How BTP fines reach you

You may get an SMS, a notice at the address on the RC, or nothing at all. Searching yourself is the only reliable way to see every case.

BTP versus other Karnataka police

A fine from Mysuru or Mangaluru police is not a BTP fine, even if the vehicle is a Bengaluru KA number.

How does a BTP fine check work?

A BTP fine check searches the Bengaluru Traffic Police database by vehicle number and returns each open notice with its amount and evidence. It is free and takes a few minutes on the BTP website, the ASTraM app or the KSP app, which share the same city data.

  1. Pick an official channel. Open the Bengaluru Traffic Police site, the BTP ASTraM app, the KSP app or KarnatakaOne by typing the address yourself.
  2. Enter the registration number. Type the full KA number with the district code and no spaces, then fill in the captcha.
  3. Open every notice. Read the junction, date, time and offence, and open the photo to confirm the plate is yours.
  4. Pay or object. Pay the notices you accept and save the receipt; complain about the rest with your evidence.
Four steps for a BTP fine check using the vehicle registration number in Bengaluru
The registration search lists every open notice on the vehicle.

When the search returns nothing

“No pending cases” means nothing is open today. A camera case can take days to appear, so search again after a week if you expect one.

Checking a vehicle you plan to buy

Run the check on any used KA vehicle before paying the seller. Fines stay with the registration, not the old owner.

What can you do on btp gov in?

The btp gov in address is the Bengaluru Traffic Police website; newer guides point to btp.karnataka.gov.in. It offers fine search by vehicle number, payment for several notices together after a mobile OTP, traffic advisories and links to the ASTraM app. Always type the address rather than following a message link.

Domain confusion

Older articles also mention other BTP addresses. If one does not load, use the official link on the Karnataka State Police site rather than a search ad.

What the site does not do

It does not handle Mysuru, Mangaluru or highway cases, and it cannot cancel a fine that has gone to court.

What is a digitab violation?

A digitab violation is a case recorded by a traffic officer on the Digitab app on a police handheld device, instead of by a fixed camera. Bengaluru police installed Digitab on the devices of about 4,000 officers to collect photo evidence of offences such as wrong parking or riding without a helmet.

Comparison of a digitab violation booked by an officer and a camera-generated traffic notice
Both reach the same BTP record and are paid the same way.

Why the label matters

The label tells you an officer, not software, made the booking. If you dispute it, the officer’s identity and photo form the record.

Same payment route

A Digitab case is paid exactly like a camera case: through BTP, ASTraM, KSP, KarnatakaOne or a traffic police station.

What is BTP input?

BTP input is how people describe sending Bengaluru Traffic Police information about a violation, a jam or an accident. Since March 2025 the police take these reports only through the BTP ASTraM app. The older PublicEye app, launched in 2015 with Janaagraha, is no longer monitored.

What happens after you report

Staff at the Traffic Management Centre check the photo. If they accept it, a notice is raised on the offending vehicle’s number.

Reports that get rejected

Unclear plates, no location and staged images are dropped. A report is evidence, so it must be honest and recent.

What is a BTP input photo?

A BTP input photo is the picture or short video a citizen uploads as proof of a violation. It must show the number plate clearly and the offence itself, such as a car on a footpath or a rider without a helmet, with the place and time.

Checklist for a BTP input photo report of a traffic violation through ASTraM
Blurred plates and missing locations are the usual reasons reports are rejected.

Safety first

Never photograph while driving. Pull over or let a passenger take the picture.

If your vehicle was reported

A notice from a citizen photo looks like any other. Open the image; if it does not show your vehicle, complain with your own plate photo.

Why do people still search BTP input 2020?

Searches for BTP input 2020 usually come from people looking for an old citizen report or a notice dated 2020. We found no separate “2020” BTP service. In those years reports went through PublicEye, which logged 3.28 lakh complaints by 2019 and resolved about 2.27 lakh.

Old 2020 notices

Cases from 2020 can still be pending. Search the vehicle number; old cases were included in the 2025 and 2026 concession windows.

Old app installs

If your phone still has PublicEye, uninstall it and use ASTraM, since reports in the old app are no longer read.

How to pay traffic fines Bangalore without overpaying?

To pay traffic fines Bangalore owners can use the BTP website, ASTraM, the KSP app, KarnatakaOne, Bangalore One centres or any traffic police station. Overpaying usually happens through unofficial apps that add charges, or by paying a fake link. Compare the total with the official site before you confirm.

Group your payments

The BTP site can clear several notices in one transaction after an OTP, which saves repeated gateway steps.

Get the receipt

Save the transaction reference and the receipt PDF. If the notice still shows as pending after a day, these prove payment. For other states and offline counters, our traffic fines guide covers the wider options.

What is the no parking fine in Bangalore?

The no parking fine in Bangalore is Rs 1,000 for cars and Rs 500 for two-wheelers. The amount rose from Rs 100 in July 2019, and 2026 reports confirm the current split. Towing returned to city roads in 2026, so a two-wheeler pays the Rs 500 fine plus towing. The towing charge is separate from the traffic fine.

VehicleFineTowing feeTotal paid
Two-wheeler₹500₹650₹1,150
Car₹1,000₹1,000₹2,000
Source: Asianet Newsable: Bengaluru towing charges, July 2026. Checked October 2026.

Towing before 2026

Earlier towing charges were Rs 200 for two-wheelers and Rs 300 for cars, so the revised fees drew complaints.

Getting a towed vehicle back

Ask for the towing slip and the challan before paying. Police guidelines require photo evidence of the parking breach.

Is the no parking fine in Karnataka the same outside Bengaluru?

The no parking fine in Karnataka follows the state amounts of Rs 500 for two-wheelers and Rs 1,000 for cars, but towing depends on each city. Towing, where it exists, is run city by city, so fees outside Bengaluru can differ or not apply at all.

Reported July 2026 figures after towing returned to city roads.

Highway parking

Stopping on a highway shoulder can be booked as obstruction or dangerous parking, which carries a higher penalty.

Local signage

Parking rules change street by street. A board or yellow kerb marking is the legal basis for the fine.

What is the without helmet fine in Bangalore?

The without helmet fine in Bangalore is Rs 500, cut from the central Rs 1,000 by Karnataka’s September 2019 notification. Helmet cases are among the most common camera notices, because ANPR cameras at junctions capture both rider and pillion.

Half-helmets and unbuckled straps

Police can book a helmet that is not ISI-marked or not fastened. A loose strap looks like no helmet in a camera image.

Licence action

Repeat helmet cases can also lead to licence action under the Act. Police and the RTO decide this case by case.

Does the without helmet fine in Karnataka change for pillion riders?

The without helmet fine in Karnataka is the same Rs 500 whether the rider or the pillion is bareheaded. We found no separate, higher pillion amount, and both people on the two-wheeler are expected to wear one.

Who the notice names

The notice goes to the owner of the vehicle, not to the pillion. The rider and owner should agree who pays.

Children on two-wheelers

Children riding pillion should wear a properly sized helmet too. Check the current central rules before carrying a child.

What is the signal jump fine in Bangalore?

The signal jump fine in Bangalore is Rs 500 for crossing on red. Red-light violation detection cameras at major junctions record the plate, the light and the stop line, so these cases rarely need an officer. A stop-line breach can be booked separately.

Amber is not a pass

Entering the junction as the light turns red is still booked. The camera timestamps the frame.

Repeat jumps

Repeated signal cases can be treated as dangerous driving under section 184, which carries higher fines and court action.

What is the one way fine in Bangalore?

The one way fine in Bangalore is Rs 500 under section 177. Riding the wrong way down a one-way street is booked this way, often in special drives. Wrong-side driving on a highway is treated more strictly, as dangerous driving.

The August 2024 drive

From 1 August 2024 Karnataka police registered FIRs against wrong-side drivers under BNS section 281 and MV Act section 184, with temporary licence suspension on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway.

Short cuts

Using a one-way street to save a U-turn is the usual reason for these notices. The fine is small, but the FIR route is not.

What is the drink and drive fine in Karnataka?

The drink and drive fine in Karnataka is set by section 185: up to Rs 10,000 and/or six months in jail for a first offence, and Rs 15,000 and/or two years for a repeat within three years. Karnataka did not lower these amounts in 2019.

Not a counter payment

Police seize the licence and send the case to court. You cannot clear it on the BTP site. Our drink and drive page explains testing and court steps.

Vehicle release

The vehicle may be held until a sober licensed driver collects it. Fees for release depend on the station.

Which traffic violation fines go to court?

Most traffic violation fines in Bengaluru are compounded, but some always go to court. These include drunk driving, dangerous driving, racing, driving without registration or fitness, letting a minor drive, and cases you dispute. The court then decides the fine and any jail term.

Court notices

A court case appears on the portal without a pay button, or with a court name. Settle it before that court, not at a counter.

Lok Adalat

Pending court traffic cases are sometimes settled at a Lok Adalat. See our lok adalat challan guide.

What is a Karnataka challan?

A Karnataka challan is any traffic or transport penalty notice issued in the state, whether by Bengaluru Traffic Police, district police or RTO inspectors. All of them are electronic now, so they carry a notice number and a link to the vehicle’s registration on state and national systems.

Different issuers, one vehicle

A single vehicle can carry a BTP notice, a Mysuru police case and an RTO case. Each must be searched in the right place.

Many state cases are also visible to transport offices nationwide. Our e challan karnataka guide covers the state portal in detail.

How does a Karnataka challan check work across districts?

A Karnataka challan check outside Bengaluru runs through the KSP app, KarnatakaOne or the national e-Challan portal. Choose the right city where the portal asks, because selecting Bangalore for a Mysuru case returns the wrong police unit and an empty result.

Common problems in a Karnataka challan check and how to fix each one
Jurisdiction mix-ups cause most missing results.

Search both systems

If you drive across districts, search the BTP system and a statewide channel. One alone may miss a case.

Highway cases

Highway police cases are filed by the district police for that stretch, so a city search will not show them.

How to run a traffic violation check by vehicle number Karnataka?

A traffic violation check by vehicle number Karnataka needs only the registration number as printed on the RC. Enter it on the KSP app, KarnatakaOne or the BTP site, solve the captcha and read the list. You do not need the licence number or the owner’s login.

Format tips

Type KA, the two-digit district code with its leading zero, the series letters and the digits. Do not add spaces or hyphens.

Out-of-state vehicles

Vehicles from other states driven in Karnataka are searched with their own state code. The notice still sits in the Karnataka system.

What is a Karnataka vehicle challan for cars and trucks?

A Karnataka vehicle challan for a car usually involves seat belts, parking, signals or phone use. For trucks and buses it adds overloading, permit, fitness and insurance offences, where Karnataka sets amounts by vehicle class, such as Rs 4,000 for an uninsured heavy goods vehicle.

Commercial fleets

Fleet owners should run checks on every vehicle each week, since drivers rarely report roadside notices.

Unauthorised drivers

Letting an unauthorised person drive costs Rs 2,000 for a four-wheeler and Rs 5,000 for other vehicles under the 2019 notification.

What should you know about a Karnataka bike challan?

A Karnataka bike challan is most often for no helmet, triple riding, signal jumping or a one-way breach, each Rs 500. Two-wheelers collect the bulk of camera notices in Bengaluru, and dues can build fast because each frame is a separate case.

Riding without a licence

A two-wheeler rider without a licence pays Rs 1,000 in Karnataka. See our without licence fine page for the central rules.

Teen riders

If a minor rides, the owner or guardian faces Rs 25,000 and possible jail, and the registration can be cancelled for a year.

What is a KSP challan?

A KSP challan is a fine issued or shown through Karnataka State Police systems, including the KSP app. The app lets you enter a vehicle number, see pending fines from districts across the state and pay them, which makes it the simplest statewide check.

KSP versus BTP

BTP is the city traffic wing; KSP is the state police. The KSP app shows city cases too, but BTP disputes still go to BTP.

During discount windows

In the 2025 and 2026 concessions, the KSP app was one of the named channels for paying at half price.

What is a Karnataka police fine?

A Karnataka police fine is any penalty booked by the state’s police, from a city traffic constable to a highway patrol. It differs from a transport department fine, which comes from RTO inspectors. Both can be compounded or sent to court, depending on the offence.

Spot payment

Officers with handheld devices can take payment on the spot, including by UPI on newer devices. Always take the receipt.

Disobeying an officer

Refusing to stop or give information costs Rs 1,000 in Karnataka, half the central maximum.

How is a Karnataka police challan settled in court?

A Karnataka police challan sent to court is listed before a traffic magistrate. You receive a summons or see the court name on the portal. You can appear, plead and pay the fine the court sets, or contest the case with evidence.

Before the hearing

Gather the notice, the photo, your RC and any proof such as toll or fuel receipts that place the vehicle elsewhere.

Paying after judgment

Court fines are paid to the court, not the police. The portal record updates once the court closes the case.

What is a Karnataka RTO challan?

A Karnataka RTO challan is issued by transport department officers, not traffic police. It covers registration, fitness, permit, tax and overloading offences. Some are paid through transport offices or the treasury system, and serious ones go to court.

Where to clear it

Visit the RTO named on the challan. Our rto bangalore page lists the city offices.

Old transport cases

The 2026 concession covered Transport Department cases dating from 1991 to 2022, showing how long such cases can sit unpaid.

Why can a Karnataka fine grow over time?

A Karnataka fine can grow because repeat offences carry higher amounts, court cases add costs, and the central Act allows penalties to rise by up to 10% a year. Unpaid notices also stack up, so a vehicle used daily past cameras can collect large dues.

Second offences

For general offences, a second case costs Rs 1,000 in Karnataka instead of Rs 500.

Licence and RC holds

Pending cases can delay RTO services such as transfer, NOC or driving license bangalore renewals.

How does a Mysore traffic fines online check work?

A Mysore traffic fines online check runs on the KSP app, KarnatakaOne or the national e-Challan portal. Enter the vehicle number and, where asked, pick Mysuru as the city. The BTP site is meant for Bengaluru only and will not reliably show Mysuru City Police cases.

Choosing the city

On KarnatakaOne, choosing Bangalore for a Mysuru vehicle returns the wrong jurisdiction. Select Mysuru first.

Mysuru registrations

Mysuru vehicles carry KA 09 or KA 55 codes, but a Bengaluru vehicle fined in Mysuru also appears there.

What does a traffic fine Mysore notice cost?

A traffic fine Mysore notice follows the same Karnataka state amounts as Bengaluru: Rs 500 for helmet, seat belt or signal cases, and Rs 1,000 for phone use or wrong parking. Mysuru police enforce the same notification; only towing and local rules differ.

Seat belt cases

Mysuru cameras book many seat belt cases. A police patrol vehicle was itself reported with 71 cases worth Rs 36,500, mostly seat belts.

Paying half

That report noted the 50% concession could halve such dues, showing how large camera backlogs get.

What details does a traffic fine check Mysore need?

A traffic fine check Mysore needs the registration number and, for KarnatakaOne, a mobile number for the receipt. If you have the notice number, it finds a single case faster. Keep your RC handy to confirm the plate format.

Notice number

The notice number appears on the SMS or paper slip. It is useful when you want to pay one case only.

Captcha and OTP

Some channels send an OTP to confirm payment. Use a phone you can access.

Who issues a Mysore traffic police fine?

A Mysore traffic police fine is issued by the traffic wing of the Mysuru City Police commissionerate. Its Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) oversees enforcement. Cameras of the city’s Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) generate most cases, with officers adding roadside bookings.

Six Mysuru ITMS camera locations named in a 2026 Mysore traffic police fine report
Camera spots named in a June 2026 news report, not a full list.

“Same for everyone”

When the patrol vehicle story broke in June 2026, the DCP said traffic laws apply to everyone and the driver would pay.

Disputes

Mysuru cases are disputed with the Mysuru traffic police, not with BTP in Bengaluru.

Where can Mysore traffic fines online be paid?

Mysore traffic fines online can be paid on the KSP app, KarnatakaOne and the national e-Challan portal. An older report also listed Mysore One centres, with a small service charge, for people who prefer the counter. Officers’ handheld devices take card or UPI payment too.

Counter payments

If you pay at a centre, check that the receipt names the notice number and the amount you paid.

Mysuru vehicles in Bengaluru

A Mysuru vehicle fined in Bengaluru is still a BTP case. Search and pay it through BTP channels.

How is Mysore traffic watched by cameras?

Mysore traffic is monitored by ITMS cameras at junctions such as Dodda Gadiyara, New Court Complex, Kuvempu Nagar, Sayajirao Road, JK Maidan and Udayagiri Circle, named in a June 2026 report. They capture plates and offences, and cases appear on the portal after review.

Tourist season

Mysuru draws heavy tourist traffic during Dasara. Out-of-town drivers should check their own vehicle after the visit.

Coverage changes

The six locations above are only those named in that report; the camera network may be larger.

How are Mangalore traffic fines checked and paid?

Mangalore traffic fines are booked by Mangaluru City Police and searched on the KSP app, KarnatakaOne or the national e-Challan portal. An older report named Kadri Traffic Police Station, Mangalore One centres and mini automation centres at Surathkal and Pandeshwar as payment points.

UPI at the roadside

From December 2024 police handheld devices in Mangaluru accepted UPI apps such as Google Pay and PhonePe, part of a statewide rollout.

2026 concession

Mangaluru cleared 35,160 pending cases during the June-July 2026 half-price window.

How does a traffic fine discount work in Karnataka?

A traffic fine discount in Karnataka is a time-limited government order letting owners pay 50% of pending e-challan amounts. It covers cases registered before a cut-off date and usually excludes serious offences such as drunk driving. It is announced by the government, never by SMS links.

Who qualifies

Only notices registered before the order’s cut-off date qualify. New cases during the window are paid in full.

Channels

Discounts apply on the official channels named in the order, such as BTP, ASTraM, the KSP app, KarnatakaOne and police stations.

Timeline of each traffic fine discount window in Karnataka from 2023 to 2026
No window was open on 30 October 2026.

Why the windows keep returning

Backlogs run into lakhs of cases. The February 2023 window alone cleared over 52 lakh cases statewide.

Do not wait

There is no fixed schedule, and unpaid cases can be sent to court before the next offer.

Traffic fines 50 discount Karnataka: is one open now?

No. A traffic fines 50 discount Karnataka scheme was not open on 30 October 2026. The latest window ran from 21 June to 10 July 2026 under a Transport Department order. Any message offering half-price fines now should be treated as suspicious until BTP or KSP confirms it.

How to spot a fake offer

Real offers appear in newspapers and on official police handles, and work on official sites. A link asking for card details in a message is not one.

If you missed the window

Pay at full amount on official channels, or wait at your own risk. Court referral is the bigger cost.

What happens to Bengaluru traffic offenders with very large dues?

Bengaluru traffic police run special drives against vehicles with large unpaid dues. In February 2024 they targeted 2,681 vehicles owing more than Rs 50,000 each. One scooter had over 300 violations worth Rs 3.20 lakh, for helmets, signals, wrong-way riding and phone use.

Bangalore traffic fines questions

What is the most common Bangalore traffic fine?

Helmet and signal cases are among the most frequent camera notices. Each usually costs Rs 500 under Karnataka's revised schedule.

Is the Bengaluru fine different from the central Motor Vehicles Act amount?

For some offences, yes. Karnataka lowered helmet, seat belt, licence and insurance fines in September 2019, but kept drunk driving and racing at the central level.

What is a digitab violation on my notice?

It means an officer recorded the offence on the Digitab app on a police handheld device, rather than a junction camera producing it automatically.

Can I report another driver to Bengaluru Traffic Police?
