Challan Chandigarh: check and pay traffic fines online

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 7 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

A challan Chandigarh drivers receive is an electronic fine booked by the UT Chandigarh Traffic Police, often from a sector camera. Search it with your vehicle, challan or licence number on the official e-Challan page, then pay by UPI or another online mode. Cases for non-compoundable offences, or ones sent to court, are paid through the virtual courts platform instead.

Key takeaways

  • Chandigarh is a union territory, so its challans come from the UT Traffic Police, not from Punjab or Haryana Police.
  • Most compoundable cases are settled on the traffic police e-challan gateway; non-compoundable ones go to virtual courts.
  • In 2025 the Sector 43 district courts put up QR codes for both gateways, payable by any UPI app.
  • Links for more than 4.50 lakh old challans were reactivated and the 90-day window was removed, so old cases can still be paid.
  • Fines follow the central Motor Vehicles Act 2019 schedule unless the UT has notified its own amount.

What is a challan Chandigarh drivers receive?

A challan Chandigarh motorists get is a digital penalty notice for a traffic offence committed inside the union territory. It is tied to a vehicle registration or a driving licence, records the sector, time and Act section, and normally reaches the owner as an SMS on the mobile number linked to the RC.

A union territory, not a state

Chandigarh is run by the UT Administration, so its roads are policed by Chandigarh Police, not by the neighbouring states. That decides which gateway and which court handle your case.

How it fits the national system

Electronic challans across India follow one model, explained in our e challan guide. This page covers only what is specific to the city.

How do you check online challan Chandigarh records?

To check online challan Chandigarh entries, open the official e-Challan page by typing its address, choose vehicle number, challan number or licence number, enter the details and the captcha, and submit. Every case on that number appears with its status, so you can see what is pending and what has gone to court.

Five steps to check a challan Chandigarh traffic police booked against your vehicle
Camera and roadside cases from every sector appear in a single search.
  1. Open the official page. Type the e-Challan address yourself instead of tapping a link from a message.
  2. Choose a search. Pick vehicle number, challan number or driving licence number.
  3. Enter the CH number. Type the full registration, for example CH01AB1234, and the captcha.
  4. Read every case. Note the place, time, offence, amount and status of each entry.
  5. Pay and keep proof. Pay pending cases by UPI or card and save the receipt PDF.

Getting the plate right

Type the registration without spaces or dashes. A dropped zero in CH01 is the usual cause of a “no record” message.

Searching by licence

A licence search catches cases booked against you as the driver, which helps if you drive a family or office car.

What does a traffic challan Chandigarh entry show?

Each traffic challan Chandigarh record lists the challan number, date and time, location, offence with its section of the Motor Vehicles Act, amount, booking unit and current status. Camera cases normally carry a photo, so check that the model and plate match your vehicle before you pay anything.

Reading the status line

Pending means the traffic police still hold it. Paid or disposed means closed. A court or virtual court status means the police gateway can no longer take the money.

Spotting a mistake

A sector you never drove through, or a photo of another car, points to a misread or cloned plate.

How do you pay a Chandigarh traffic police challan?

A Chandigarh traffic police challan that is still pending is paid on the e-challan gateway: search it, select the case and pay online. People who visited the Sector 43 district courts in 2025 could also scan a QR code, enter the vehicle or challan number, see the amount and pay with any UPI app.

Two QR codes, two systems

The courts displayed one code for the e-challan system and another for virtual courts. Pick the one that matches your case status, or the amount will not appear.

Keeping the receipt

Download the receipt and note the transaction number.

What fines apply to a Chandigarh police challan?

A Chandigarh police challan generally uses the central penalties of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019. The UT may have notified its own figure for some offences, so the amount on your challan, not a general table, is the one you owe. Repeat offences cost more.

Heavier cases

Blocking an ambulance or fire engine draws Rs 10,000, and so does driving while disqualified. Serious offences like these may be sent to court.

What does Chandigarh Traffic Police handle?

Chandigarh Traffic Police is the traffic wing of the UT police, led at senior level by the post of SSP Traffic and Security, an officer usually on deputation from the Punjab or Haryana cadre. The wing books offences, runs checks at junctions and manages the camera cases that make up much of the city’s challan load.

Compoundable cases

Most offences it books, such as signal jumping or a missing seat belt, can be settled by paying the compounding amount on the e-challan gateway.

What it passes to court

Non-compoundable offences are not settled by the police. They go straight to the virtual courts, which set the amount.

Which is the official Chandigarh traffic police website?

The Chandigarh traffic police website sits on a government domain, chandigarhtrafficpolice.gov.in, and the parent force uses chandigarhpolice.gov.in. Both refused connections from our build machine during checks, so confirm any page you use is on a gov.in address before entering a vehicle number or paying.

What to look for

Official pages use gov.in or nic.in addresses.

Where the QR codes live

The Tribune noted that the e-challan and virtual court QR codes are also published on the official website, so you can pay from home.

Why is Chandigarh traffic watched so closely?

Chandigarh traffic is dense for a small city: it has the largest number of vehicles per capita in India. Its planned grid of sectors and its seven-tier road hierarchy make junctions easy to cover with cameras, and CCTV surveillance sharply increased the number of challans waiting to be cleared.

The status line tells you which of the two gateways now holds the case.

Cameras across the sectors

Camera coverage runs across the sector grid, so a challan may arrive days after you passed a junction, without anyone stopping you.

The backlog effect

The surge in CCTV cases crowded the courts, prompting the 2025 adalats and QR codes.

What if a Chandigarh challan goes to court?

If the pay button has disappeared and the status mentions court, the case now sits with the virtual courts platform. All non-compoundable challans go there, and so do compoundable ones that were not settled with the police. You search by vehicle or challan number and pay the amount the court sets.

Lok Adalats

From 1 to 12 September 2025 Judicial Magistrates held special adalats for traffic cases, followed by a National Lok Adalat on 13 September. Watch for similar sessions.

Paying means accepting

Paying a virtual court challan normally means pleading guilty. If you dispute it, appear before the magistrate instead.

How do you dispute a wrong Chandigarh challan?

Do not pay a case that is not yours. Gather your RC, a clear photo of your own plate and anything showing where the vehicle really was, then raise the issue with the Chandigarh Traffic Police, quoting the challan number. A case already in court is contested before the magistrate.

Cloned plates

A camera photo of a different car can mean someone is copying your number. File a police complaint.

Sold vehicles

If you sold the vehicle before the date on the challan, keep the sale papers and the transfer record as proof.

How do CH plate codes appear on a challan?

The challan prints your full registration, and the code after CH comes from where the vehicle was registered. CH-01 to CH-04 are all issued by the Chandigarh office, which our RLA Chandigarh page covers. The plate code does not decide who books you; the location field does.

CodeWhat it covers
CH-01 to CH-04Vehicles registered in Chandigarh
PB-01Rented and self-drive cars in Chandigarh, Punjab taxis
HR-70Listed among Chandigarh codes in Wikipedia’s city infobox

Rental and self-drive cars

With a rented car the challan reaches the registered owner, who may pass it on to you under the rental terms.

Why the code matters

CH01 and CH04 numbers with the same digits are different vehicles.

Is a Chandigarh challan SMS genuine?

A real message gives your vehicle number, a challan number and an amount that all match when you search the official page yourself. Fake texts push a short link, an APK file or an urgent “settlement”. Never pay from the link; if you already did, call 1930 or report on cybercrime.gov.in.

Do's and don'ts before paying a Chandigarh traffic police challan sent by text
A genuine case always shows up when you type the portal address yourself.

Red flags

Unknown web addresses, threats of arrest within hours and requests for an OTP are signs of fraud. Bookmark the official gateway and use only that.

Can Punjab and Haryana drivers get a Chandigarh challan?

Yes. Chandigarh Police can book any vehicle on UT roads, whatever its plate, and the case links to that vehicle’s own registration. A challan raised in Mohali or Panchkula belongs to Punjab or Haryana instead; see our e challan Punjab guide for the Punjab route.

After a tricity trip

Search your vehicle a few days later, since camera cases can take time to show up.

Before selling

A pending challan can hold up an ownership transfer, so clear every case and hand the receipts to the buyer.

Challan chandigarh questions

Is it free to check a challan in Chandigarh?

Yes. A search by vehicle, challan or licence number costs nothing. You pay only the fine itself, and only on an official gateway.

Can I pay an old Chandigarh challan from years ago?

Usually yes. The Tribune reported in September 2025 that links for more than 4.50 lakh old challans were reactivated and the 90-day window was removed. Confirm on the portal before paying.

Why can't I see a pay button on my Chandigarh challan?

The case has most likely moved to a virtual court, either because the offence is non-compoundable or because it was sent to court. Pay it through the virtual courts platform.

Does Chandigarh charge different fines from the central Act?

It generally uses the central 2019 schedule, but the UT can notify its own amount for some offences. The figure on your challan is the one you pay.

Will a Mohali or Panchkula challan show up as a Chandigarh challan?

No. Mohali is in Punjab and Panchkula is in Haryana, so those challans belong to that state's police, even though the cities form one tricity.

Can a Chandigarh challan block my RC work?

A pending challan can hold up ownership transfer and similar work at the registering authority. Clear it and keep the receipt first.
