Delhi traffic challan: check status, pay online and settle court cases
A delhi traffic challan is a fine issued by Delhi Traffic Police, by an officer's handheld device or a camera. Search it on traffic.delhipolice.gov.in or the national e-Challan portal using your vehicle, challan or notice number. Pay pending challans online; if the status says court, settle it on the virtual court portal vcourts.gov.in or before the court named in the summons.
Key takeaways
- Delhi challans are searched on the Delhi Traffic Police website or the national e-Challan portal; both show the same vehicle record.
- A posted DTP notice asks you to pay within 60 days of issue, or the challan may be forwarded to court.
- Camera challans that reach court usually go to the virtual court on vcourts.gov.in, where you can pay or contest.
- Delhi applies the central Motor Vehicles Act 2019 penalties; the amount printed on your challan is what you owe.
- Report violations through the Traffic Prahari app, which replaced the Traffic Sentinel scheme in September 2024.
- Pay only on pages ending in .gov.in; fake challan SMS links are a common fraud in Delhi.

What is a Delhi traffic challan?
A Delhi traffic challan is the official record of a traffic offence booked inside the National Capital Territory. Delhi Traffic Police create it on a handheld device at the roadside or from camera evidence, and it carries the vehicle number, the offence, the section of the Motor Vehicles Act and the amount due.
Who issues it
Most challans in the city come from Delhi Traffic Police, which sits under Delhi Police rather than the Transport Department.
What a challan contains
Each record shows a challan number, the date, time and place, the offence code, the Act section and a photo or video when a camera caught it.
How does e challan Delhi work?
The e challan Delhi system replaced paper slips with digital records linked to the vehicle registration. When an officer or camera books an offence, the record goes to a central database, an SMS goes to the owner, and the fine becomes searchable online the same day or within a few days.
Roadside challans
At a checkpoint the officer enters your vehicle and licence details into a device, prints or sends the challan, and can take payment on the spot for offences that can be compounded.
Camera challans and posted notices
Red-light, speed and lane cameras capture the plate, and the system sends a challan to the owner. Some violations generate a printed notice posted to the RC address, which asks the owner to pay or explain who was driving.
Challan check Delhi: where should you start?
For a challan check Delhi drivers can use two official websites: the Delhi Traffic Police site, traffic.delhipolice.gov.in, and the national e-Challan portal, echallan.parivahan.gov.in.

Which site to try first
If you received a posted notice, use the Delhi Traffic Police website, because the notice number is built for that system. For a challan SMS that names the e-Challan portal, or when you want every challan on the vehicle from any state, start with the national portal.
| Search by | What to enter | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle number | Full Delhi registration, such as DL plus district code | You want every challan on the vehicle |
| Challan number | The ID in the SMS or slip | You are following one roadside fine |
| Notice number | The number printed on the DTP letter | You received a posted notice |
| DL number | Your driving licence number | You drove several vehicles |
How do you check challan online Delhi by vehicle number?
To check challan online Delhi by registration, open the e-Challan portal or the Delhi Traffic Police site, choose the vehicle number option and enter the plate without spaces. The result lists every challan on that vehicle, no matter who was driving, together with its current status.
Typing the plate correctly
Delhi plates use DL plus a district code, for example DL 3C or DL 8S. Type the number without spaces and include any leading zero.
E challan check Delhi on a phone
For an e challan check Delhi drivers often use mParivahan, the transport ministry app. Sign in with your mobile number, open the challan section and enter the registration.
Delhi challan check online with a challan or DL number
A Delhi challan check online by challan number opens one fine only, which is quicker when you are following up a specific SMS. A search by driving licence number lists challans booked against you as a driver, including those on vehicles you do not own.
Copying the challan ID
Genuine challan IDs are long and may start with letters. Copy the number from the SMS exactly, but type the portal address yourself rather than tapping the link.
What does online traffic challan status Delhi show?
The online traffic challan status Delhi page shows one row per challan: number, date, place, offence, amount and status. The status column matters most, because it tells you whether you can still pay the police online.
Challan details Delhi riders should read
Before paying, check the challan details: the time, the junction name, the plate in the photo and the offence code. A wrong vehicle in the image, or a time when your car was parked elsewhere, is a reason to raise a grievance instead of paying.
How to view challan online Delhi records for evidence
To view challan online Delhi evidence, click the challan number or the image icon in the result. Save a screenshot of the photo and the details.
What does challan status Delhi mean?
Challan status Delhi labels tell you who holds the challan now. Pending means Delhi Traffic Police can still collect the compounding amount. A court or virtual court label means the case has moved to the judiciary, and the police payment button usually disappears from the page.

Pending and notice labels
A pending challan is payable online or to an officer with a challan device. A notice label means a letter was generated; it carries a 60-day window from the date of issue for payment on the Delhi Traffic Police website.
Court and disposed labels
Court or virtual court means you settle with the court, not the police. Disposed or paid means the matter is closed.
Pay challan online Delhi: what are the steps?
To pay challan online Delhi owners need only the challan or vehicle number and a UPI app, card or net banking. The steps below work on the Delhi Traffic Police website and the national e-Challan portal, as long as the challan is still with the police and not in court.
- Search the challan. Open traffic.delhipolice.gov.in or echallan.parivahan.gov.in and enter your vehicle, challan or notice number.
- Check the status. Make sure the challan is still with the police and not marked court or virtual court.
- Open the evidence. Read the offence, place, time and photo before you pay.
- Pay online. Pay by UPI, debit card, credit card or net banking on the official page.
- Save the receipt. Download the receipt and note the transaction number.
Paying several challans together
Both portals let you tick more than one pending challan and pay in a single transaction.
Delhi challan pay: which payment methods are accepted?
For a Delhi challan pay online, the official pages accept UPI, debit and credit cards and net banking. From June 2026, Delhi Traffic Police also joined Bharat Connect (the bill-payment network run by NBBL), so challans can be paid through apps and banks on that network.

Challan payment Delhi at a police counter
For challan payment Delhi offline, officers who carry an e-challan device can take cash or card at the roadside and print a receipt. A posted notice can also be settled by cheque or demand draft in favour of DCP/TRAFFIC(HQs), with the notice number written on the back, sent to Traffic Headquarters at Pusa.
Paying through Bharat Connect
Bharat Connect payments appear in many bank and UPI apps under bill payments. Look for Delhi Traffic Police among the billers, enter the challan or vehicle number and check the amount matches the portal before you pay.
Online challan payment Delhi: what to keep after paying
After an online challan payment Delhi portals show a receipt with the challan number, the amount and a transaction ID. Download it as a PDF and keep the SMS confirmation.
Pending challan status Delhi after payment
If the pending challan status Delhi still shows after paying, give it a day or two. If it still shows pending, call the Delhi Traffic Police helpline on 1095 or 011-25844444 with the receipt number ready.
What is a Delhi pending challan?
A Delhi pending challan is any fine still unpaid on your vehicle or licence. It stays on the record until paid or decided by a court. Pending challans can show up at police checks, during RTO work and when you sell the vehicle, so it is cheaper to clear them early.

What happens if you leave it
A posted notice warns that if you do not pay within 60 days, the challan may be forwarded to court, with sections 133 and 187 of the MV Act added for not answering. A court can then summon you and set its own amount.
Lok Adalat for older challans
Older challans pending in Delhi courts are sometimes listed at National Lok Adalat sittings. Our guide to the Lok Adalat challan explains how those notices work and how to tell a real sitting from a fake offer.
How to clear a Delhi police pending challan before selling?
To clear a Delhi police pending challan before a sale, search by vehicle number, pay every pending item and save the receipts. Buyers and dealers often refuse a car with open challans, and the transport office can hold up the ownership transfer until they are cleared.
Settle court items first
If any challan shows court, you cannot pay it through the police. Pay it in the virtual court or appear in the court named, then print the disposal receipt.
What is the Delhi notice department?
What people call the Delhi notice department is the Notice Branch of Delhi Traffic Police, based at Traffic Headquarters, Dev Prakash Shastri Marg, Pusa, Delhi-110012. It sends posted notices for camera-detected violations and handles replies from owners who were not driving or no longer own the vehicle.

When to contact the Notice Branch
Contact it when the vehicle in the photo is not yours, when you sold the vehicle before the offence date, or when the plate may have been cloned. Bring or send the RC, sale papers and any proof of where the vehicle was at that time.
What should you do with a traffic challan notice?
A traffic challan notice from Delhi Traffic Police tells the owner about a violation, usually with a photo, and asks for the compounding amount within 60 days.
If you agree with it
Pay on traffic.delhipolice.gov.in using the notice number, or pay a challan officer with an e-challan device.
If you were not the driver
The owner is the first person contacted, but you can name the driver. Send the driver’s licence details and a short signed statement to the Notice Branch so the case moves to the right person.
What is a court challan?
A court challan is a traffic challan that has left the police compounding stage and is now handled by a magistrate. It happens when a notice is not paid in time, when the offence cannot be compounded on the spot, such as drunk driving, or when the vehicle has been impounded.
Why a challan moves to court
The three common reasons are non-payment within the notice period, an offence the Act does not allow police to compound, and a challan you decided to contest.
Court fines versus police compounding
Court fines are set by the magistrate within the range the Act allows, while police compounding uses the amount already fixed for that offence. The court may also add jail terms or licence action for serious offences.
| Point | Police compounding | Court stage |
|---|---|---|
| Who decides the amount | Fixed compounding rate | Magistrate, within the Act’s range |
| Where you pay | DTP site, e-Challan, officer device | vcourts.gov.in or the court counter |
| Can you contest | Grievance to Traffic Police | Yes, before the magistrate |
| Extra penalties | Rare | Possible jail or licence action in serious cases |
How to pay court challan online?
How to pay court challan online in Delhi: open vcourts.gov.in, choose Delhi and the traffic department, and search by challan number, vehicle number or mobile number. The court proposes an amount; you can pay it with a card or net banking, or choose to contest instead.
Steps on the virtual court portal
Pick the state as Delhi and the department as traffic. Enter the challan or vehicle number and open the case. Read the proposed fine, tick the declaration and pay through the gateway. An acknowledgement with the transaction number is generated when the case is disposed.
Court challan payment: what changes after transfer?
Once a challan moves to court, court challan payment goes to the court, not the police. The amount may differ from the original police figure, the Delhi Traffic Police payment button stops working, and the receipt you get is a court disposal record, not a police receipt.
How to pay challan in court?
How to pay challan in court applies when your case is with a physical court rather than the virtual court. Go to the court and date in the summons with your challan copy, licence and RC. The magistrate hears you, fixes the fine, and you pay at the court counter.
What to carry
Take the original summons or notice, your driving licence, the RC and ID. If the vehicle was impounded, bring insurance and PUC papers too, because the release order often depends on them.
How does the virtual court Delhi traffic police use work?
The virtual court Delhi traffic police use was launched in July 2019 for e-challans sent to court. The owner gets a summons by SMS and email under section 208 of the Motor Vehicles Act, with a link to vcourts.gov.in, where the case can be paid or contested without visiting a courtroom.

Which challans go there
All traffic challans sent to court by Delhi Traffic Police can go to the virtual court, except those where the vehicle was impounded. Impounded cases and serious offences go to a physical court.
Payment gateway and receipt
The virtual court uses an SBI payment gateway and accepts debit cards, credit cards and net banking. After payment it generates an acknowledgement showing the challan as disposed, with a transaction number.
Virtual traffic court: pay or contest?
In the virtual traffic court you choose between paying the proposed fine and contesting the challan. Paying closes the case quickly. Contesting sends it to a judge for a hearing, so only contest when you have evidence, such as a photo showing a different plate.
When paying makes sense
If the evidence clearly shows your vehicle and the proposed amount is reasonable, paying saves time.
When contesting makes sense
Contest when the vehicle in the photo is not yours, the offence time conflicts with proof you have, or you sold the vehicle before the date. Keep screenshots of the evidence and your documents ready for the hearing.
What is an evening court challan?
An evening court challan is a traffic challan listed before an evening court, which sits after normal court hours to clear pending traffic cases. A Tis Hazari court order of 29 October 2025 designated Evening Courts 1 and 2 (Central) and 1 and 2 (West) to handle traffic challans.
Why evening courts exist
Delhi has a large backlog of traffic challans, and evening courts let working people appear without missing a full day.
What is a CJM court challan?
A CJM court challan refers to a traffic case listed under the Chief Judicial Magistrate of a district, who allocates traffic work among the courts in that district. In Delhi, CJM orders decide which evening or special courts take traffic challans, so the CJM’s name may appear on a summons or court notice.
Finding your court
The summons names the court complex, such as Tis Hazari, Karkardooma, Saket, Dwarka or Rohini, and the court number. District court websites at delhicourts.nic.in publish the orders that allocate traffic work.
Delhi court challan: which courts hear traffic cases?
A Delhi court challan is heard either in the virtual court online, in evening courts designated for traffic work, or by magistrates in the district court complexes. Which one applies depends on the offence, whether the vehicle was impounded and the district where the challan was booked.
Online first
Most camera challans sent to court go to the virtual court first.
Physical courts for serious matters
Drunk driving, impounded vehicles and accident cases are heard in physical courts. In those cases, read the summons for the complex and court number and appear on the date given.
What are the challan fees for common offences?
Challan fees in Delhi follow the central Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019, which raised most penalties from 1 September 2019. The table shows the central figures for common offences; the amount printed on your challan is the one you actually owe, because the Act allows ranges.

| Offence (MV Act section) | Central penalty, first offence |
|---|---|
| General offence (177) | Rs 500; Rs 1,500 for a repeat |
| Red light jump, wrong side, handheld phone (184) | Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 and/or jail |
| Over-speeding, light motor vehicle (183) | Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 |
| Over-speeding, medium or heavy vehicle (183) | Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000 |
| No helmet (194D) | Rs 1,000 and 3-month licence disqualification |
| No seat belt (194B) | Rs 1,000 |
| Drunk driving (185) | Up to Rs 10,000 and/or 6 months jail |
| Driving without a licence (181) | Up to Rs 5,000 |
| No insurance (196) | Rs 2,000 and/or 3 months jail |
| Pollution standards (190(2)) | Up to Rs 10,000 |
Repeat offences cost more
Most sections have a higher figure for a second offence. A compounded challan still counts as a previous offence, so paying one does not wipe the history. For the full national list, see our page on traffic fines.
What happens if you jump a red signal in Delhi?
Jumping a red light in Delhi is booked as dangerous driving under section 184, which carries Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 and/or jail for a first offence. Guides commonly report Rs 1,000 as the usual Delhi challan, but the amount on your challan is the one that applies.
How cameras catch it
Many Delhi junctions have red-light cameras that photograph the plate when a vehicle crosses the stop line after the signal turns red. The challan usually arrives by SMS or posted notice a few days later.
Stop line and zebra crossing
Stopping on the zebra crossing or past the stop line can also be booked, even if you did not cross the junction.
What is the overspeeding challan in Delhi?
The overspeeding challan in Delhi follows section 183: Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 for a light motor vehicle and Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000 for medium and heavy vehicles. Speed cameras and interceptor vehicles record the speed, and the challan reaches the owner like any camera challan.
Speed limits differ by road
Limits change between arterial roads, residential streets and expressways, and are shown on signboards.
Repeat speeding
A second speeding offence can bring licence action as well as a fine. Licence seizure under section 206 is possible for speeding, so repeated challans are more than a money problem.
What is the drink and drive fine in Delhi?
The drink and drive fine in Delhi is up to Rs 10,000 and/or six months in jail for a first offence under section 185, and Rs 15,000 and/or two years for a repeat. Police cannot simply collect it at the roadside; the case goes to court.
What happens at a check
Police use a breath analyser. If the reading is over the legal limit, the vehicle may be impounded and your licence seized and sent for suspension proceedings. You receive a court date.
Learn more
For the legal blood-alcohol limit, how the breath test works and what courts usually decide, see our guide to the drink and drive penalty.
What is the pollution challan in Delhi for bike riders?
A pollution challan in Delhi for bike riders is booked when a scooter or motorcycle has no valid PUC certificate or fails emission standards. Section 190(2) allows up to Rs 10,000. Delhi also enforces a No PUC, No Fuel rule at fuel stations from 18 December 2025.
Getting a fresh PUC
Visit an authorised testing centre with the vehicle. Two-wheeler tests take a few minutes. Our page on the PUC certificate covers validity and how to download it.

What is the number plate challan in Delhi?
A number plate challan in Delhi is booked for a missing, damaged, tampered or non-standard plate, or a vehicle without the required high security plate and colour-coded sticker. Reports from the 2020 Delhi drive cite Rs 5,500, compounded from a Rs 10,000 maximum, but confirm the current figure on the portal.
Fancy plates and stickers
Plates with styled fonts, tinted covers or extra words do not meet the prescribed format and can be challaned. The sticker shows the fuel type and must match the vehicle record.
Cloned plates
If you get a challan for a place you never visited, your plate may have been copied. Report it to the Notice Branch with your RC and proof of the vehicle’s location, and file a police complaint if it repeats.
What are the new traffic rules in Delhi?
The new traffic rules in Delhi that drivers notice most in 2026 are pollution related. The No PUC, No Fuel rule has been enforced at fuel stations since 18 December 2025, and winter restrictions on older vehicles apply each pollution season. Penalties themselves still come from the 2019 central Act.
No PUC, No Fuel
Fuel stations in Delhi refuse fuel to vehicles without a valid PUC certificate, using cameras that read number plates.
Winter and age-based restrictions
Delhi restricts older petrol and diesel vehicles, and adds seasonal limits under its air pollution plans. Our guide to the Delhi diesel cars ban explains who is affected and the exemptions.
Traffic police Delhi challan: who can issue one?
A traffic police Delhi challan can be issued by authorised Delhi Traffic Police officers at the roadside, through camera systems run by the traffic police, and by the Notice Branch for camera cases. Transport Department enforcement officers can also challan commercial and transport-related offences.
Ask for details
You can ask the officer for their name and the challan details.
Paying an officer
Pay only an officer with an e-challan device who gives a printed or SMS receipt.
Is there a Delhi RTO challan?
A Delhi RTO challan is not a separate system. People use the phrase for challans that show up during transport office work, or for fines booked by the Transport Department’s enforcement teams. Both appear on the same vehicle record as police challans.
When RTO work stops
Pending challans can hold up transfer of ownership, NOC and other work at a Delhi transport office. Clear them and print the receipts before you book the appointment.
Transport Department offences
Permit, fitness, overload and tax violations by commercial vehicles are usually booked by Transport Department enforcement officers.
What was the traffic sentinel scheme?
The traffic sentinel scheme was a Delhi Traffic Police programme launched in 2015 that let citizens photograph traffic violations and report them, earning points for verified reports. It was relaunched as the Traffic Prahari app on 1 September 2024, so the old scheme is no longer the route to use.
Traffic sentinel Delhi points
Under traffic sentinel Delhi rules, each verified violation earned points, and top contributors received rewards. Many people still search for Delhi sentinel, but the same idea now runs inside Traffic Prahari with cash prizes.
What changed
The old scheme often gave goods or vouchers. Traffic Prahari pays monthly cash rewards to the top four contributors and uses a points table that varies by violation.
How does the Traffic Prahari app work?
The Traffic Prahari app lets citizens upload photos or videos of traffic violations in Delhi. Traffic Police verify each report, and valid reports become challans for the violator. Points are given per verified report, and the top four contributors each month get cash prizes.

Points and rewards
Points vary by violation, for example three points for red light jumping and five for wrong-side driving. The monthly prizes are Rs 50,000, Rs 25,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 for the first four places.
Rules for reports
Do not confront the driver or edit the photo or video; edited reports are rejected. By April 2025 the app had over two lakh users and more than six lakh violations reported.
Is there a Delhi traffic police challan app?
The official Delhi traffic police challan app for reporting violations is Traffic Prahari. To check or pay your own challans on a phone, use mParivahan or the e-Challan portal in a browser. Any other app claiming to be the official Delhi challan app should be checked carefully.
Checking the developer
In the app store, the developer should be a government department, and the listing should link back to a .gov.in site.
Apps sent on WhatsApp
Never install an APK file sent by SMS or WhatsApp. Fake challan apps read messages and steal banking OTPs, a fraud reported widely in Delhi and other cities.
Which app for traffic violations works in Delhi?
The app for traffic violations in Delhi is Traffic Prahari, run by Delhi Traffic Police. For checking challans on your own vehicle, mParivahan is the national app. The two do different jobs: one reports others’ violations, the other shows fines on your vehicle.
Which one to install
Install Traffic Prahari only if you plan to report violations. For your own challans, mParivahan or the browser portal is enough.
How to file a Delhi traffic police complaint online?
To make a Delhi traffic police complaint online, use the Citizen Centric Services section of traffic.delhipolice.gov.in, where grievances about challans, officers or traffic problems can be submitted. For violations by other drivers, upload evidence through the Traffic Prahari app instead.

Complaining about a wrong challan
Include the challan or notice number, the reason it is wrong and proof such as your RC, sale papers or a photo of your plate.
Delhi traffic complaint by phone or WhatsApp
For a Delhi traffic complaint by phone, call 1095 or 011-25844444. Delhi Traffic Police launched a WhatsApp number, 8750871493, in 2014 for photo complaints; confirm it is still active on the official site before relying on it. In an emergency, dial 112.
Where can you get the current traffic update in Delhi?
For the current traffic update in Delhi, follow the Delhi Traffic Police account on X and the advisories page of traffic.delhipolice.gov.in. Advisories are issued for events, VIP movement, processions and road works, often with diversions and alternate routes. We cannot give live updates on this page.
Reading an advisory
Each advisory lists the roads affected, the time window and suggested alternate routes.
Echallan Delhi traffic SMS: real or fake?
An echallan Delhi traffic SMS is real only if the challan appears when you search it yourself on an official site. Fraud messages mimic challans with short links, fake domains and APK files. Never pay through a link in a message; type the portal address in your browser.

Signs of a fake message
Watch for odd domains, spelling mistakes, urgent threats of arrest and requests to install an app. Official pages end in .gov.in or .nic.in and do not ask for OTPs on calls.
If you already paid a fake link
Call your bank to block the card and report it on cybercrime.gov.in or the 1930 helpline. Then search your vehicle on the real portal to see if the original challan exists.
Is a DDCSMS challan an official service?
We could not find any official Delhi Traffic Police or Parivahan service called DDCSMS challan when we checked on 30 October 2026. The term may come from a misread SMS sender code. Treat any message or site using that name with care, and search your challan only on official portals.
What to do with a DDCSMS message
Do not tap the link. Search your vehicle number on traffic.delhipolice.gov.in or echallan.parivahan.gov.in. If nothing is pending, the message was likely fake.

How do you handle an e challan Faridabad police issued?
An e challan Faridabad police issue to a Delhi vehicle is a Haryana challan, not a Delhi one. Search it on the national e-Challan portal using your vehicle number; it will show Haryana as the state. Payment goes to Haryana, and Delhi Traffic Police cannot cancel it.
Common on NCR routes
Drivers between Delhi, Faridabad and Gurugram often pick up challans in both states. Search the national portal, which covers both, rather than only the Delhi website.
Disputing a Faridabad challan
Contact the Faridabad traffic police or the Haryana police grievance channel, not the Delhi Notice Branch.
