E challan MP online and TN police vehicle fine check guide
To do an e challan MP online search, open echallan.parivahan.gov.in, choose vehicle, challan or licence number, type the MP plate without spaces and read each case. Tamil Nadu fines sit on the same national system, so a TN police vehicle fine check works the same way. Pay pending cases within about 60 days and keep the receipt.
Key takeaways
- Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu both book fines on the national e-Challan portal, so one search method covers MP and TN plates.
- MPOnline is also listed as a route for paying MP challans; the national portal remains the place to confirm the final amount.
- The usual window to pay is 60 days from issue; the date printed on your own challan wins over any general figure.
- Fines follow the central Motor Vehicles Act 2019 schedule unless the state has notified its own compounding rate.
- A challan bill is what you owe; the receipt is proof you paid. Save both.
- An RDO challan is usually a revenue office payment, not a traffic fine.

What is e challan MP online?
E challan MP online is the digital way to find and settle a traffic fine booked against a Madhya Pradesh vehicle. The offence is stored against the registration number with its section, place and amount, and you can view it from a phone without visiting a police station. Our main e challan guide explains the national system behind it.
Why this page also covers Tamil Nadu
People searching for a Madhya Pradesh fine often also look up Tamil Nadu fines, because both states use the same national database. This guide therefore walks through MP challans first, then the Tamil Nadu check, then a few related terms people mix up.
What you can do online
You can search a case, see a camera photo where one exists, pay a pending amount and download proof of payment. Disputes and court cases need a few extra steps, covered further down.
How do you check an MP traffic challan in a few minutes?
An MP traffic challan check takes about two minutes on echallan.parivahan.gov.in. Choose the challan status option, select a search type, type the plate or number and the captcha, and the screen lists every case against that vehicle with its amount and status.

- Open e-Challan. Go to echallan.parivahan.gov.in and choose the option to check challan status.
- Pick a search. Select vehicle number, challan number or driving licence number.
- Type the MP plate. Enter the full registration such as MP09AB1234 with no spaces, then the captcha.
- Check each case. Read the offence, place, amount and whether the case is pending or in court.
- Pay and save. Pay pending cases by UPI, card or net banking and download the receipt.
Using the phone instead of a laptop
The portal opens in a mobile browser, and the mParivahan app has a challan section too. On a small screen, rotate the phone if the results table is cut off.
When to search again
Camera cases are reviewed before they appear, so a fresh offence may take a few days. Search again a week after a trip through Indore or Bhopal.
Which details does an MP vehicle challan search ask for?
An MP vehicle challan search needs one of three keys: the registration number, the challan number or your driving licence number. A vehicle search may also ask for the last five characters of the chassis or engine number from the RC, which stops strangers from browsing your record.
Writing the plate correctly
Type MP, the two-digit district code, the series letters and the number as one string. A space, a hyphen or the letter O typed instead of zero returns no result.
When the licence search is better
If you drive a family car or an office vehicle, the case may sit against that plate. A licence search shows cases booked against you as the driver.
What does an MP police challan entry show?
Each MP police challan entry lists the challan number, date and time, location, offence and Act section, the amount, the issuing unit and a status. Camera bookings usually add a photo of the plate, and roadside bookings may name the officer’s unit.
Pending, paid or court
Pending means the police still hold the case and you can pay online. Paid or disposed means it is closed. A court label means the file has moved, and the police pay button usually disappears.
Checking the photo
Compare the photo with your vehicle’s model and colour. A different car with your number means a misread or cloned plate.
Who books an e challan MP police case?
An e challan MP police case is usually booked by the traffic wing of the district police or by city traffic units in places such as Indore and Bhopal. Madhya Pradesh Police, headquartered in Bhopal and formed in 1854, runs these units and lists its services on mppolice.gov.in.
Handheld devices at checkpoints
At a naka, an officer may enter the offence into a handheld device that creates the record on the spot. Ask for the printed slip or SMS before you leave.
Camera cases without a stop
Signal, speed and lane offences picked up by cameras are booked against the registered owner. You only learn about them from the SMS or a portal search.
Where is Madhya Pradesh e challan enforcement heaviest?
Madhya Pradesh e challan enforcement is concentrated in Indore, Bhopal, Gwalior and Jabalpur, according to Autocar India’s state guide. Indore and Bhopal have the most camera coverage, while all four cities feed the same state vehicle database, so a case from any of them shows in one search.
Highway bookings
Cases booked on national and state highways through MP land in the same record as city cases. A truck driver crossing from Gwalior to Jabalpur sees them all together.
Why other-state drivers get MP fines
The fine is tied to the plate, not the home state. A Tamil Nadu car booked in Indore shows the case when you search the TN number.
What is an MP transport e challan from a transport officer?
An MP transport e challan is booked by transport department staff rather than the traffic police. These officers mostly check commercial vehicles for permit, fitness, tax and overloading problems, and their bookings also go onto the national e-Challan record against the plate.
How to tell the two apart
The issuing unit field names the office. A transport office or RTO name means the department booked it; a police station or traffic unit means the police did. For the wider picture of the MP transport department, read our mp transport challan guide.
Paying a transport case
If it shows as pending on the portal, you can usually pay it there like any other case. A paper memo with no online record needs a visit to the issuing office.
How do you pay an MP vehicle challan online?
To pay an MP vehicle challan online, search it on the e-Challan portal, select each pending case and pay through the gateway by UPI, debit card, credit card or net banking. Download the receipt at the end. The usual window is 60 days from the date of issue.
Clearing several cases together
If one vehicle has more than one pending case, you can usually tick them all and pay in a single transaction. Check the total before confirming.
If money leaves your account but status stays pending
Keep the transaction ID and receipt. Banks can take a day or two to confirm. If it is still pending after that, contact the unit that booked the case with your proof.
Does MPOnline handle MP traffic challan payments?
MPOnline, the state’s e-governance portal at mponline.gov.in, is listed as a route for MP traffic challan payments alongside the national Parivahan lookup. Whichever route you use, confirm the final amount and deadline on echallan.parivahan.gov.in before paying.
MPOnline kiosks
MPOnline also works through authorised kiosks in towns, which helps owners who are not comfortable paying on a phone. Ask for a printed receipt that shows the challan number.
Which route to choose
If you already have a smartphone and UPI, the national portal is the fastest. A kiosk suits anyone who needs help or wants paper proof straight away.
Which fines appear on an MP vehicle challan?
Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu both apply the central penalties of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, as amended in 2019, unless the state has notified its own compounding amount for an offence. Treat this table as a guide; the amount on your own challan is final.

| Offence (section) | Central penalty |
|---|---|
| General offence, no specific penalty (177) | Rs 500 |
| No seat belt (194B) | Rs 1,000 |
| No helmet (194D) | Rs 1,000 and 3-month licence disqualification |
| Triple riding (194C) | Rs 1,000 and 3-month licence disqualification |
| Over-speeding (183) | Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 |
| Uninsured vehicle (196) | Rs 2,000 |
| No valid licence (181) | Rs 5,000 |
| Unregistered vehicle (192) | Rs 5,000 |
| Racing on a public road (189) | Rs 5,000 |
| Driving despite disqualification (182) | Rs 10,000 |
| Drunk driving (185) | Rs 10,000 and up to 6 months jail |
| Blocking an emergency vehicle (194E) | Rs 10,000 |
| Juvenile driving (199A) | Rs 25,000, owner or guardian liable |
The calculator shows central penalties only; MP and Tamil Nadu may notify different compounding amounts.
Why amounts can vary
Section ranges such as over-speeding let the officer or court pick a figure within limits. Repeat offences also cost more under several sections.
What happens when an MP police challan goes to court?
An MP police challan that stays unpaid, or that involves a serious offence such as drunk driving, can be sent to a magistrate or a virtual court. Once that happens the police pay option usually closes and the case has to be settled through the court route instead.
Signs it has moved
The status changes to a court or virtual court label and a court name may appear. Our page on court challan online payment explains the steps from there.
Lok Adalat sittings
Some pending cases are taken up at Lok Adalat sittings announced by legal services authorities. Watch for official announcements, never forwarded links.
How do you do a TN police vehicle fine check online?
A TN police vehicle fine check online uses the same national portal: open echallan.parivahan.gov.in, choose vehicle, challan or licence number, type the TN plate as one string and enter the captcha. Every case booked by Tamil Nadu units appears with its amount and status.

Chennai cases
Chennai has its own traffic police enforcement, but its cases sit in the same statewide system, so a search on a TN plate covers the city too. For city-specific detail, our tn challan check page goes deeper.
No login needed
You do not need an account to search. Keep the RC nearby because a vehicle search may ask for chassis or engine digits.
Which Tamil Nadu police units can book a fine?
Tamil Nadu Police, formed on 6 September 1859 and headquartered on Kamarajar Salai in Mylapore, Chennai, runs traffic enforcement through district units and nine city commissionerates. Wikipedia lists 243 traffic police stations and 30 traffic investigation wings in the state as of 2022.
The nine commissionerates
They are Greater Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Salem, Tiruppur, Tirunelveli, Avadi and Tambaram. Each has its own traffic wing for city roads.
Camera growth outside Chennai
Autocar India notes that camera enforcement is spreading in Coimbatore and Madurai, so drivers there are more likely to get a booking without being stopped.
How much is a traffic fine Tamil Nadu drivers pay?
A traffic fine Tamil Nadu police book generally follows the central 2019 schedule shown in the table above, from Rs 500 for a general offence up to Rs 25,000 for juvenile driving. Tamil Nadu can notify its own compounding amounts, so the figure against your case on the portal is the final one.
Do not trust old forwarded charts
Fine charts shared on messaging apps are often outdated or from another state. Use the portal entry, which shows exactly what is due.
PUC drives in Chennai
Chennai runs frequent pollution certificate checks, so keep a valid PUC on the phone or in the glovebox to avoid a booking.
How do you pay a traffic fine Tamil Nadu police booked?
Search the TN plate on echallan.parivahan.gov.in, tick the pending case and pay by UPI, card or net banking. The usual window is 60 days from issue. Download the receipt, because it is your only easy proof if the status does not update.
Paying at the roadside
If an officer offers to collect payment through a handheld device, ask for the SMS or printed receipt that shows the challan number before you drive off.
Cases already in court
If the status shows a court, the police pay option is gone. Follow the court route explained above rather than paying an agent.
How do TN plate codes show up in a fine search?
Tamil Nadu plates start with TN and a two-digit district code, for example TN09AB1234. The code shows which RTO registered the vehicle, not where the offence took place, so a TN-38 car from Coimbatore can carry a Chennai fine.

| Code | Registering office |
|---|---|
| TN-01 | Chennai (Central), Ayanavaram |
| TN-02 | Chennai (North West), Anna Nagar |
| TN-37 | Coimbatore (South) |
| TN-38 | Coimbatore (North) |
| TN-45 | Tiruchirapalli (West) |
| TN-66 | Coimbatore (Central) |
| MP-04 | Bhopal |
| MP-07 | Gwalior |
| MP-09 | Indore |
| MP-20 | Jabalpur |
An unusual numbering rule
No Tamil Nadu RTO uses a number whose digits add up to eight, so there is no TN-08, TN-17 or TN-26. If someone quotes such a code, the plate has been misread.
Codes with letter suffixes
Some TN offices add a letter, such as TN-37Z for Sulur. Type the plate exactly as the RC shows it.
Can you make an online challan payment Rajasthan on the same portal?
Yes. An online challan payment Rajasthan case uses the same national e-Challan service, so you search the RJ plate, select the pending case and pay through the gateway exactly as for MP or TN. The usual window there is also 60 days from issue.
Where to read more
Our rajasthan police challan page covers Rajasthan’s units, highway bookings and disputes in detail.
Several states on one vehicle
A vehicle that travels widely may carry cases from MP, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu at once. One search on the plate lists them all.
What is a challan bill?
A challan bill is the record of a fine that has been booked but not yet paid. It shows the challan number, offence, section, place and the amount due. People also use the phrase for the receipt they download after paying, which is a different document.

Bill versus receipt
The bill says what you owe; the receipt says you paid it and carries a transaction ID. Keep both if you sell the vehicle or claim the cost from an employer.
Other meanings of challan
In banking and tax, a challan is any payment slip, such as a treasury challan. Check the heading to know which kind you are holding.
How do you download a challan bill after paying?
Search the case again on echallan.parivahan.gov.in after payment. Paid cases show a receipt or print option next to them. Save it as a PDF and store it in the same folder as your RC copy, so you can produce it quickly when asked.
If the download option is missing
The status may still be updating. Wait a day and try again, keeping the bank SMS and transaction ID in the meantime.
For company vehicles
Fleet managers usually need the receipt to claim the amount back. Download one for each challan rather than a single screenshot of the list.
What is an RDO challan?
RDO challan is not a traffic police term. RDO usually means Revenue Divisional Officer, an officer in the revenue department in states such as Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, and an RDO challan is generally a payment slip for a fee or charge collected by that office.
How it differs from a traffic challan
It does not appear on the e-Challan portal and cannot be paid there. If you hold one, the slip itself names the head of account and where to pay.
When to ask the office
We could not confirm a single statewide meaning, so ask the issuing revenue office what the challan covers before paying it.
Is a challan SMS from MP or Tamil Nadu genuine?
A genuine challan SMS gives a challan number that you can find by searching the portal yourself. Fake messages push a short link, a payment page that is not on a gov.in address, or an app file to install. If the number does not show up on the portal, do not pay.

If you already paid a fake link
Call your bank to block the card or UPI, then report it on the national cyber crime helpline 1930 or at cybercrime.gov.in.
Calls asking for OTP
No police unit needs your OTP to close a challan. End the call and search the case yourself.
How do you dispute a wrong MP traffic challan?
If an MP traffic challan names a vehicle you did not drive, a wrong place or a photo of another car, do not pay it. Raise a grievance with the unit that booked it, attach your RC and a clear photo of your own plate, and keep the reference number.
Evidence that helps
Fuel bills, toll receipts or parking tickets from another city on the same date are strong proof. So is a photo showing a different model or colour.
Cloned plates
If the problem repeats, file a police complaint about a possible cloned plate and keep copies with your RC.
Will an unpaid challan block RTO work in MP or Tamil Nadu?
It can. Pending challans may hold up RTO services such as ownership transfer, a no-objection certificate for another state or some permit work. Clear them and keep the receipts before you apply, so the office has no reason to send you back.
Selling a vehicle
Search the plate before handing over the keys. A buyer will want proof that nothing is pending, and cases booked before the sale remain the seller’s to settle.
Moving between states
An owner moving from Bhopal to Chennai should clear MP cases first, because the old state’s office will check them before releasing the vehicle’s file.
How do MP and Tamil Nadu challan checks compare?
The two states differ more in where they enforce than in how you check. Both use the national portal, the same 60-day guide window and the central fine schedule unless notified otherwise. The table sums up the practical differences.
| Point | Madhya Pradesh | Tamil Nadu |
|---|---|---|
| Where to search | echallan.parivahan.gov.in | echallan.parivahan.gov.in |
| Extra payment route | MPOnline portal and kiosks | Roadside handheld device |
| Heaviest camera use | Indore and Bhopal | Chennai, growing in Coimbatore and Madurai |
| Plate prefix | MP plus district code | TN plus district code |
| Police website | mppolice.gov.in | tnpolice.gov.in |
What stays the same everywhere
Search the plate yourself, pay only on official pages and save the receipt. These three habits protect you in any state.

Is e challan MP online checking free?
Yes. Searching on echallan.parivahan.gov.in costs nothing. You only pay the fine itself, and only through official pages.
Can I do a TN police vehicle fine check without logging in?
Yes. The national portal lets anyone search by vehicle, challan or licence number. A vehicle search may ask for the last digits of the chassis or engine number.
How long do I have to pay an MP traffic challan?
The usual window is 60 days from the date of issue. Read the deadline on your own challan, because some cases go to court earlier.
Does Tamil Nadu charge different fines from the central Act?
A state can notify its own compounding amounts. The figure shown against your challan on the portal is the one you owe, whatever a general table says.
Can I pay an MP challan from Tamil Nadu?
Yes. The portal works from anywhere in India. Search the MP plate, pay the pending case online and save the receipt.
What is a challan bill?
It is the record of a fine that has been booked and not yet paid. It shows the challan number, offence and amount due.
What does RDO challan mean?
RDO usually stands for Revenue Divisional Officer. An RDO challan is generally a payment slip for a revenue office fee, not a traffic fine. Ask that office what it covers.
Why does my MP vehicle challan still show pending after I paid?
Bank confirmations can take a day or two. Keep the transaction ID and receipt, then contact the unit that booked the case if nothing changes.
Can I make an online challan payment Rajasthan cases need from the same site?
Yes. Rajasthan challans are on the same national e-Challan service, so you search the RJ plate and pay there.
