e challan app guide: official traffic fine apps by state

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 16 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

There is no single e challan app for citizens. The NIC eChallan app runs on police handhelds, while drivers check and pay fines in NextGen mParivahan, on echallan.parivahan.gov.in, or in a city app such as BTP ASTraM in Bengaluru. Delhi's Traffic Prahari app is for reporting offences, not paying them. Install only listings published by NIC or the state police.

Key takeaways

  • The NIC eChallan app is an officer tool; citizens use mParivahan or the e-Challan website.
  • Bengaluru drivers can check and pay in BTP ASTraM, the KSP app or KarnatakaOne.
  • Kolkata and West Bengal fines are paid on police websites, GRIPS or the national portal.
  • Delhi's Traffic Prahari app, the old Traffic Sentinel, lets citizens report violations for rewards.
  • Never install a challan APK sent on chat or grant an app SMS access.

What is an e challan app?

An e challan app is any mobile app that shows or settles traffic fines booked electronically against a vehicle. The name covers two different things: the officer-side eChallan app that police use to issue fines, and citizen apps such as NextGen mParivahan or city police apps that let owners look up and pay them.

Five steps to check traffic fines in an e challan app on your phone
The same search also works on the national e-Challan website.

The officer side

The e-Challan system is a MoRTH project built by NIC. Traffic police carry handheld devices with cameras and, in many cities, Bluetooth printers. The officer app records the offence, the vehicle number and a photo, then pushes the challan into the national database within moments.

The citizen side

Drivers never need the officer app. They search the same database through mParivahan, the e-Challan website or a state app. All of these read records tied to the registration number, so the owner sees a fine even when someone else was driving the vehicle.

Which tool should you use to report road offences?

Reporting is a different job from paying. To flag another driver’s offence, use mParivahan’s road offence reporting feature or your city police app, such as Delhi’s Traffic Prahari or Bengaluru’s BTP ASTraM. Police verify each report before any challan is sent to the vehicle owner.

National reporting option

The NextGen mParivahan listing names road offence reporting and road accident reporting among its features. That makes it the one option that works in every state, although local police apps may act on a report faster in the big cities.

City reporting options

Delhi users report through Traffic Prahari, and Bengaluru moved photo and video reporting into ASTraM after PublicEye was retired in March 2025. Keep the photo clear, show the number plate and add the time and place.

How to check traffic fines on your phone?

Open NextGen mParivahan or your state police app, choose the challan option, enter the vehicle number or driving licence number and read the list that comes back. Each row shows the offence, date, place and amount. If nothing appears, repeat the search on the e-Challan website.

  1. Pick the app. Use NextGen mParivahan or the app published by your city or state police.
  2. Check the publisher. Confirm the developer is NIC or the named police force before installing.
  3. Enter your number. Search by vehicle registration, driving licence or challan number.
  4. Read the list. Note each offence, date, place, amount and whether it has gone to court.
  5. Pay and save. Pay the challans you accept and keep the receipt or a screenshot.

What to keep ready

Have the full registration number, your driving licence number and, for some searches, the last digits of the chassis or engine number. These appear on the RC. Type the plate without spaces, because extra characters are the most common reason for an empty result.

Reading a status

Pending means unpaid. Disposed or paid means settled. A court or virtual court tag means the online pay button may disappear; such challans go through court challan online payment on the Virtual Courts site.

Is there an official RTO fine check app?

Yes, in effect. The national RTO fine check app is NextGen mParivahan, developed by MoRTH with NIC and free on Android and iOS. It searches e-challans by vehicle or licence number alongside RC and DL details. State police apps cover only their own area.

How to confirm it is genuine

On the store page the publisher should read NIC eGov or National Informatics Centre. Private apps with similar names often show challans scraped from public sites and add ads or fees. Our guide to the RTO vehicle information app explains how to tell them apart.

What it will not do

mParivahan does not cancel or reduce a fine. It cannot settle a challan that has moved to court, and it may lag behind a state system for a day or two. For disputes, use the grievance option on the website of the force that booked you.

Can citizens download the officer eChallan app?

No. Odisha’s transport department states that mobile access to the e-Challan system is available only to enforcement officers on Android phones. Officers log in with department credentials. Any listing that promises citizens the officer app, or an unlocked copy of it, should be treated as a scam.

Why the app is locked

The officer app can create challans, record evidence and take spot payments. Opening it to the public would let anyone book fines against other vehicles, so access is tied to police and transport department logins.

What citizens see instead

When an officer issues a challan, the owner usually gets an SMS with the challan number. That number can then be searched in mParivahan or on echallan.parivahan.gov.in to see the photo, offence and amount, and to pay online.

What can the national website do that apps cannot?

The e-Challan website handles a few jobs better than any phone app. It covers most states in one search, shows challans that have been sent to court, and gives printable receipts. It is also the fallback when an app crashes, times out or shows an empty list.

Comparison of an RTO fine check app and the national e-Challan website
Use the website when the app shows nothing or looks out of date.

Better for records

Receipts downloaded from the website are easier to print and file, which helps when you sell a vehicle or apply for an NOC. Pending challans can hold up RTO work, so keep proof of every payment in one folder.

Better for wide searches

A vehicle that travels between states may collect fines from more than one police force. The national site pulls in states that use the NIC system. Our e challan hub lists the state portals that run separate records.

E challan Bangalore: which app works?

For e challan Bangalore look-ups, the main app is BTP ASTraM from Bengaluru Traffic Police, on Google Play and the App Store. It shows pending notices, takes payment, carries live traffic updates and accepts violation reports. The Karnataka State Police (KSP) app is a second official option.

Table of Bangalore challan check and payment channels including BTP ASTraM
Every Karnataka channel pulls from the same notice record.

BTP ASTraM features

Bengaluru Traffic Police describe ASTraM as a single app for real-time traffic updates, incident alerts, fine payment and reporting. It took over photo and video complaints from PublicEye in March 2025, so older guides that mention PublicEye are out of date.

When to use the KSP app

The KSP app comes from Karnataka State Police rather than the city force, which suits owners outside Bengaluru. It asks for the vehicle number, lists pending fines and lets you pay. During the 2025 and 2026 concession windows it was one of the named channels.

How does Bangalore traffic fine payment work in the app?

Bangalore traffic fine payment in ASTraM follows a short path: search your vehicle number, tick the notices you want to clear, pay by UPI, card or net banking and save the confirmation. The same notices can also be paid on the BTP website, at KarnatakaOne or at a traffic police station.

Paying several notices

Busy roads in Bengaluru mean many owners carry more than one notice. Select them all in one go to get a single receipt. Check that the total matches the sum of the rows before you confirm, and screenshot the final screen.

If the payment fails

A deducted amount that does not show as paid usually settles within a day or two. Keep the bank reference number and recheck before paying again. If it still shows pending, take the reference to a traffic police station.

How does a Bangalore challan check work?

A Bangalore challan check looks up every notice linked to a Karnataka-registered vehicle. Enter the plate in ASTraM, the KSP app or KarnatakaOne and you see the notice number, offence, location, date and amount. Camera-booked notices often include a photo of the vehicle at the spot.

Checking with a photo

Photo evidence helps you spot a wrong number plate read by a camera. If the picture shows another vehicle, do not pay; raise it with Bengaluru Traffic Police and keep your RC copy ready as proof.

Checking before buying

Run the check before buying a used KA vehicle. Pending notices stay with the registration, so ask the seller to clear them first. The bangalore traffic fines page has the full offence list and towing rules.

Bangalore challan: what details do you need?

For any Bangalore challan search you need the registration number at minimum. KarnatakaOne also accepts the notice number printed on an SMS or paper notice. For payment, keep UPI, a debit or credit card, or net banking ready; Paytm is also listed as a channel.

Details on the notice

A Bengaluru notice shows the notice number, the section of the law, the place and time, and the compounding amount. Some older notices carry a Digitab reference from a handheld device. All of them can be searched by vehicle number.

Owner versus driver

The notice goes to the registered owner. If a family member or driver committed the offence, the owner still pays or settles it. Company vehicles should keep a log of who used each vehicle and when.

Can you check challan online Bangalore without an app?

Yes. To check challan online Bangalore without installing anything, open karnatakaone.gov.in and go to Online Services, then Police, then Pay Traffic Violation Fine. Search by notice number or registration number. The BTP website and the national e-Challan site work in a browser too.

KarnatakaOne in a browser

KarnatakaOne works on a phone browser, so it suits people who do not want another app. You can also pay in person at KarnatakaOne and BangaloreOne centres, which helps if you prefer cash or need a printed receipt.

Paying at the station

Traffic police stations and the Traffic Management Centre accept payment over the counter. Carry the notice number and the vehicle number. Ask for a printed receipt with the notice number on it.

How are Karnataka traffic police fine amounts set?

A Karnataka traffic police fine follows the central Motor Vehicles Act as amended in 2019, but Karnataka notified lower compounding amounts for several offences in September 2019. The amount printed on your notice is the one to pay. Common figures are below.

OffenceKarnataka amount
Riding without a helmetRs 500
No seat beltRs 500
No licence, two- or three-wheelerRs 1,000
No licence, four-wheelerRs 2,000
No insurance, two-wheelerRs 1,000
No insurance, four-wheelerRs 2,000
Drunk drivingRs 10,000
Source: Karnataka reduces 2019 fines, The News Minute. Checked October 2026.

Offences that go to court

Drunk driving and some other serious offences are not settled in the app. They go before a magistrate. The app may show them as court cases without a pay button.

Concession windows

Karnataka has run 50% concession windows on old notices, including twice in 2025 and again in mid-2026. The e challan Karnataka page tracks those dates and who qualified.

E challan WB: is there a West Bengal app?

For e challan WB searches there is no confirmed statewide citizen payment app. West Bengal Traffic Police send drivers to their website, wbtrafficpolice.com, which offers online fine payment through GRIPS and links to the national e-Challan portal. On a phone, those sites open in any browser.

Kolkata Police and West Bengal Police keep separate records.

What about Kolkata Police apps?

Kolkata Police run a citizen app called Bondhu, but the guides we checked do not say it handles fine payment. We found no official Kolkata app listing that takes challan payments from the public, so use the websites below.

Using mParivahan in Bengal

Challans booked through the NIC system can also be searched in NextGen mParivahan by vehicle or licence number. If a West Bengal challan does not appear there, it may sit in the state’s own records, so check the police website as well.

How does WB challan payment work on a phone?

A WB challan payment on a phone starts at wbtrafficpolice.com. Choose online fine payment, search the challan, and you are passed to GRIPS, the West Bengal Finance Department receipt portal. After paying you get a GRN, which you use later to check or reprint the receipt.

Keeping the GRN

The GRN is your proof. Write it down or screenshot it before closing the page. If the challan still shows pending after a few days, the GRN lets the police trace the payment quickly.

Paying through the national site

West Bengal Traffic Police also link to echallan.parivahan.gov.in. If GRIPS is slow, search the challan on the national site and pay there. Do not pay the same challan twice on two channels; wait for one to settle first.

West Bengal traffic challan payment: which channel to pick?

For a West Bengal traffic challan payment, pick the channel that matches who booked you. Outside Kolkata, West Bengal Police challans go through wbtrafficpolice.com and GRIPS. Inside Kolkata, the Kolkata Traffic Police website and the national e-Challan portal are the usual routes. The amounts are covered on our WB traffic fine page.

How to tell the forces apart

The challan slip or SMS names the issuing unit. A Kolkata traffic guard means Kolkata Police; a district name or highway unit usually means West Bengal Police. When in doubt, search both.

Offline counters

Kolkata Traffic Police headquarters and traffic guard offices accept payment in person. Carry the challan number and the vehicle number, and ask for a receipt.

How does online traffic fine payment Kolkata work?

Online traffic fine payment Kolkata works through the Kolkata Traffic Police website or the national e-Challan portal. Search by vehicle or challan number, check the offence and amount, and pay by UPI, card or net banking. Save the receipt as a PDF on your phone.

What a Kolkata record shows

Each record lists the case or challan number, the date, the place, the section and the amount. Many people call it a traffic case rather than a challan; the meaning is the same.

When the search is empty

An empty result can mean the challan has not synced yet or was booked by another force. Wait a day and search again, then try the national portal. Do not trust a link sent by SMS that claims to show your case.

Can you settle a Kolkata traffic fine payment on the spot?

Yes. For a Kolkata traffic fine payment on the road, officers may stop a vehicle with pending challans and take payment by card machine. A Policybazaar guide adds that they can show a UPI QR code generated in the police app. Always ask for a receipt before you leave.

Checking the officer’s request

Ask the officer for the challan number and amount, and check it against your own search if you can. A genuine spot payment goes into the police system and later shows as paid.

If you cannot pay then

You can decline a spot payment and pay later online, unless the officer seizes a document or the vehicle. Note the challan number and clear it soon, because unpaid cases can be sent to court.

What is the Delhi traffic police app?

The main Delhi traffic police app today is Traffic Prahari, on Android and iOS. Citizens register with a mobile number, OTP, name and email, then upload photos or videos of offences such as illegal parking, wrong-side driving or red light jumping. Police verify each report before a challan reaches the owner.

Key figures for the Delhi traffic police app Traffic Prahari and its rewards
Reports are checked by police before any challan goes out.

What you can report

Reports cover illegal parking, wrong-side driving, red light jumping, dangerous driving, unsafe overtaking and road rage. Show the number plate clearly and do not film while you are driving yourself.

Misuse rules

False or malicious reports can lead to suspension from the app and legal action. Police check every upload, so a doctored photo is more likely to land the reporter in trouble than the target.

What happened to the Traffic Sentinel app?

The Traffic Sentinel app was Delhi Traffic Police’s 2015 scheme for citizen reports. It was upgraded and relaunched as Traffic Prahari on 1 September 2024. Old Sentinel links and APK files are no longer the official route; search the store for Traffic Prahari by Delhi Police.

Growth since the relaunch

By April 2025 Traffic Prahari had over two lakh users and more than six lakh reported violations. That is a big jump from the Sentinel years and explains why many Delhi challans now start with a citizen photo.

Uninstall the old app

If an old Sentinel copy is still on your phone, remove it. Outdated apps stop getting security fixes, and look-alike files carrying the old name circulate on chat groups.

How do Traffic Prahari rewards work?

Each verified report earns points, for example 3 points for red light jumping and 5 points for wrong-side driving. At the end of each month the top four contributors receive cash rewards from Delhi Traffic Police. Unverified or rejected reports earn nothing.

Monthly rankReward
FirstRs 50,000
SecondRs 25,000
ThirdRs 15,000
FourthRs 10,000
Source: Traffic Prahari rewards, The Week (PTI). Checked October 2026.

How points are judged

Points depend on the violation type and on police accepting the report. Clear plates, correct time and location, and one offence per upload all help a report pass checking.

Rewards are not guaranteed

Only the top four earn cash each month. Treat the app as a road safety tool first; the reward amounts can change, so check the current scheme in the app.

Does the Delhi traffic police mobile app show your challans?

Not reliably. The Delhi traffic police mobile app Traffic Prahari is built for reporting other vehicles, and we could not confirm a feature for paying your own challans in it. Delhi owners check and pay on traffic.delhipolice.gov.in, the national e-Challan portal or mParivahan.

Where Delhi challans live

Delhi notices carry a 60-day payment window on the Delhi Traffic Police website before they may go to court. Court-bound challans are settled through Virtual Courts. The Delhi traffic challan page explains each step.

Other Delhi channels

Delhi Traffic Police also take complaints on social media and their helpline numbers. These are for traffic problems and queries, not payments. Pay only on the official sites listed in the box below.

What is an RTC challan?

RTC challan is an unclear search term. RTC normally means a state Road Transport Corporation, the bus operator, which does not issue traffic fines to private vehicles. Most people typing it mean an RTO or traffic police challan, which is checked by vehicle number in the apps above.

If you meant a bus fine

Ticketless travel or similar penalties on a corporation bus are handled by that corporation’s own staff, not the e-Challan system. Ask the depot or check the corporation’s website.

What does a car case check mean?

A car case check usually means looking for challans or court cases filed against a car’s registration. Search the number in mParivahan or on the e-Challan site; court-sent challans show a court tag. For theft or police records, the NCRB vehicle report is a separate search.

Before buying a used car

Run both searches before you pay a seller. Pending challans stay with the registration, and a theft record can stop the transfer altogether.

How do you spot a fake e challan app?

A fake e challan app usually arrives as an APK file or a link in an SMS or WhatsApp message, often with a warning that your vehicle will be seized. Genuine apps come from the official store under NIC or the police force’s name and never need SMS or screen-sharing access.

Do's and don'ts to avoid a fake traffic fine app on your phone
Fake challan apps are built to read your bank OTPs.

Which permissions are a red flag?

A challan search needs only internet access. Requests to read SMS, share your screen, install other apps or act as an accessibility service are signs of an OTP-stealing app. Deny them and uninstall it.

If you already paid a fake

Call your bank to block the card or UPI, then report the fraud on the national cyber crime helpline 1930 or at cybercrime.gov.in. Keep screenshots of the message and the payment.

E challan app questions

Which is the official e challan app in India?

Citizens use NextGen mParivahan, published by NIC, or the national e-Challan website. The app called eChallan is used by enforcement officers on handheld devices.

Can I pay a traffic fine in mParivahan?

mParivahan lets you search e-challans by vehicle or licence number and pay through a gateway. If a challan has gone to court, pay it through Virtual Courts instead.

Which app shows Bangalore challans?

BTP ASTraM, from Bengaluru Traffic Police, shows and takes payment for city fines. The KSP app and KarnatakaOne also handle Karnataka notices.

Is there a Kolkata Traffic Police app for paying fines?

We could not confirm a public payment app. Kolkata fines are paid on the Kolkata Traffic Police website, the national e-Challan portal or to an officer with a card machine.

What is the Traffic Sentinel app now called?

Delhi's Traffic Sentinel scheme from 2015 was relaunched as Traffic Prahari on 1 September 2024. It is used to report violations, not to pay your own challans.

Does Traffic Prahari pay money for reports?

Yes. The top four contributors each month receive Rs 50,000, Rs 25,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000, based on points for verified reports.

What does RTC challan mean?

RTC usually means a state Road Transport Corporation bus operator, which does not issue traffic challans. Most searchers mean an RTO or traffic police challan.

How do I know a challan app is fake?

Fake apps arrive as APK files or links on chat, ask for SMS or screen access, or come from an unknown developer. Uninstall them and report fraud on 1930.

Why does the app show no challans when I got an SMS?

Camera challans can take a few days to sync, and some states keep their own records. Search the state police portal and the national website before assuming the SMS is fake.
