HDFC FASTag: how to buy, load and look after your HDFC Bank toll tag

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 9 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

An HDFC FASTag is a prepaid RFID toll sticker issued by HDFC Bank. Apply online on the bank's FASTag page or at a branch with your RC, PAN and one address proof; you do not need an HDFC account. Fix the sticker inside the windscreen, then load the wallet by UPI, PayZapp, NetBanking or WhatsApp. Customer care is 1800 120 1243.

Key takeaways

  • An HDFC FASTag costs a one-time ₹100 issuance fee plus a refundable deposit that depends on the vehicle class (₹200 for a car).
  • You can buy it online or over the counter at an HDFC Bank branch, even without an HDFC savings account.
  • Recharge through any UPI app with the handle netc.<vehicle number>@hdfcbank, or through PayZapp, NetBanking or WhatsApp on 7070022222.
  • A full KYC wallet holds up to ₹2,00,000; a limited KYC wallet stops at ₹10,000.
  • The sticker must sit inside the front windscreen; a tag kept loose in the car can be blacklisted.
  • For a lost tag or disputes call 1800 120 1243; for a plaza that will not read the tag call 1033.

What is HDFC FASTag?

An HDFC FASTag is a radio-frequency (RFID) sticker issued by HDFC Bank under the national NETC programme. It links your vehicle to a prepaid wallet, so the toll plaza reader deducts the fee as you drive through without stopping for cash. The tag is tied to one registration number.

Five steps to buy an HDFC FASTag online with OTP, RC and KYC documents
No HDFC savings or current account is needed to buy the tag.

Who runs the FASTag system

FASTag is a national scheme run by NHAI through Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), with NPCI handling the payment network. HDFC Bank is one of many issuer banks. It sells the tag, holds your wallet money and answers your service requests.

What the bank looks after

HDFC handles the tag sticker, your KYC, the wallet balance, recharges, alerts, statements, replacements and closure. Toll rates, plaza rules and the annual pass are set by NHAI and the government, so the bank cannot change those for you.

How does an HDFC FASTag work at a toll plaza?

As the car enters a FASTag lane, an overhead reader picks up the tag ID from the sticker. The plaza system checks the vehicle class, works out the toll and sends the debit request to HDFC Bank, which takes the amount from your wallet and sends you an SMS.

What happens in those few seconds

The reader reads the tag, the barrier lifts once the bank confirms the debit, and the deduction alert arrives on your registered mobile. If the balance is too low or the tag is on the blocked list, the lane system flags it and the barrier stays down.

Why the vehicle class matters

Every tag carries a vehicle class code. The plaza charges according to that class, so a car tag on a truck, or the other way round, leads to a wrong deduction and can get the tag blacklisted for a class mismatch.

Who can get an HDFC FASTag?

Any owner of a vehicle registered in India can get an HDFC FASTag, from a private car to a multi-axle truck. Individuals, proprietors, partnerships and companies can all apply. HDFC Bank says you do not need an HDFC savings or current account to buy one.

Individuals and families

A private owner applies in their own name with the RC and personal KYC. If the car is registered to a parent or spouse, the tag must still be issued in the registered owner’s name, because the bank matches the RC with the KYC documents.

Two-wheelers

Two-wheelers do not pay toll on national highways, so they do not need a FASTag. Banks issue tags for cars and heavier classes, and the HDFC fee page lists classes from class 4 (car, jeep, van) upward.

How to get FASTag from HDFC Bank?

To get a FASTag from HDFC Bank, apply on the bank’s online FASTag page or ask for over-the-counter issuance at a branch. Keep your RC, PAN and one address proof ready, pay the fee, deposit and first load, and fix the tag inside the windscreen when it arrives.

  1. Open the HDFC FASTag apply page. Go to apply.fastag.hdfc.bank.in, or walk into an HDFC Bank branch and ask for a FASTag.
  2. Verify your mobile number. Enter your number and confirm the OTP. Every toll and balance alert goes to this number.
  3. Enter the vehicle details. Type the registration number exactly as it appears on the RC and choose the vehicle type.
  4. Upload RC and KYC. Add the RC, your PAN and one address proof, all in the owner’s name, or finish video KYC.
  5. Pay and receive the tag. Pay the issuance fee, deposit and first load, then stick the tag inside the windscreen.

Online or branch: which is quicker?

A branch can hand you the tag on the spot if it has stock for your vehicle class, while the online route saves the trip but involves delivery. The bank’s own app guide sits on our page about the HDFC FASTag app, which also covers KYC updates.

Before you apply

Check that the RC number, owner name and mobile number are correct. A typing error in the vehicle number is the most common reason a new tag is not read, because the plaza record will not match the plate.

Can you apply for the tag on the HDFC website?

Yes. HDFC Bank runs an online issuance portal at apply.fastag.hdfc.bank.in. You log in with your mobile number and OTP, enter the vehicle details, upload documents or do video KYC, and pay online. The tag is then sent to the address you give.

Video KYC for online buyers

HDFC offers video KYC (V-KYC), which needs your Aadhaar number and the original PAN card in front of the camera. If the video call fails, the bank lets you finish offline KYC at a branch; that takes about 3 working days.

Paying online

The first payment covers the issuance fee, the security deposit for your class and the opening wallet load. Use a debit card, UPI or net banking from any bank. Keep the payment reference until the tag is active.

How do you get the tag at an HDFC Bank branch?

Walk into an HDFC Bank branch with the original RC, PAN and one address proof, and ask for FASTag issuance. Staff fill in the form, check the papers, take the payment and usually fix the sticker for you or hand it over with the kit.

What to carry to the branch

Take the original RC and KYC papers plus a photocopy of each. If you show Aadhaar, mask the first eight digits on the copy; HDFC rejects unmasked copies for offline KYC.

Buying at a toll plaza or from agents

Bank-appointed point-of-sale counters at some toll plazas and authorised agents also sell tags. Check that the counter belongs to HDFC Bank, insist on a receipt, and never pay an agent who asks for money to a personal UPI ID.

Which documents does an HDFC FASTag need?

You need the vehicle’s registration certificate (RC) and KYC documents that match the owner named on it. For individuals, HDFC asks for PAN (mandatory) plus one of a driving licence, passport, voter ID or Aadhaar with address. Companies add incorporation papers and a list of directors or partners.

Every document must be in the name of the registered owner.

Documents for a private owner

Keep the RC, PAN card and one ID with address. Photos must be sharp and show all four corners. If the address on your ID differs from the RC, carry a second proof so the branch can match them.

Documents for a business vehicle

A company, firm or proprietor needs the registration or incorporation document, the business PAN, the proprietor’s or signatory’s KYC and a list of directors or partners. Commercial classes also need vehicle photos for KYV, explained below.

Updating KYC later

If you bought a tag with minimum KYC, the wallet limits stay low until you upgrade it. Our guide on HDFC KYC explains the bank’s general KYC rules and how video KYC works.

Which vehicle class is printed on your HDFC FASTag?

Your tag carries an NPCI vehicle class (VC) code taken from the RC. Cars, jeeps, vans and small goods carriers like the Tata Ace are class 4. Light commercial vehicles are class 5, buses and two-axle trucks are class 7, and heavier trucks fall into classes 6, 12, 15 or 16.

Why the class must match the RC

Toll plazas charge by class. If the tag says class 4 but the vehicle is a two-axle truck, the plaza flags a class mismatch. IHMCL lists a mismatch as one of the reasons a tag can be blacklisted, so ask for a new tag if the class is wrong.

Finding the class on your tag

The class is printed on the sticker and shown on the customer portal next to the tag ID. Compare it with the body type on your RC before your first trip.

What deposit and fees come with the tag?

HDFC Bank charges a one-time issuance fee of ₹100 (including taxes) and a refundable security deposit that depends on the vehicle class, from ₹200 for a car to ₹500 for heavy trucks. Your first recharge is added on top. GST applies as notified and the bank says charges can change.

What the deposit is for

The deposit sits with the bank while the tag is active. HDFC refunds it only to KYC customers when the NETC FASTag account is closed. A minimum-KYC wallet should be upgraded before closure if you want the money back.

Where to see the full fee list

The full list of reissue, recharge and other charges, and any recent changes, is covered on the HDFC charges section of our HDFC FASTag app page. For national fee changes across banks, see new FASTag rules.

What is the HDFC FASTag sticker?

The HDFC FASTag sticker is the physical tag: a thin, windscreen-mounted label with an RFID chip and antenna inside, the HDFC Bank and NETC FASTag logos, a tag ID, the vehicle class and a QR code. It is designed to break if peeled off, so it cannot be moved to another car.

What is printed on it

You will find the tag serial number, the class code and a QR code that some UPI apps can scan to start a recharge. The vehicle number is linked in the bank’s system, not printed in large letters, so keep the tag ID noted in your phone.

Paper copy versus the sticker

The welcome kit may include a letter with your tag ID and portal details. Only the sticker on the glass works at the plaza; a photo or printout is useless at the lane.

Where should the HDFC FASTag sticker go on the windscreen?

Fix the HDFC FASTag sticker on the inside of the front windscreen, usually in the centre just behind the rear-view mirror. The glass must be clean and dry. IHMCL says the tag must be affixed on the windscreen, and a tag kept loose in the car can be blacklisted.

Dos and don'ts for placing the HDFC FASTag sticker on a car windscreen
A tag that is not fixed on the windscreen can be blacklisted.

Steps to fix it

Wipe the glass with a dry cloth, peel the backing, press the tag flat for a few seconds and smooth out air bubbles. Avoid the tinted band at the top of some windscreens and any metallic film that can block the radio signal.

Trucks, buses and vans

On tall vehicles the tag still goes on the front windscreen, roughly in the middle, so that the overhead reader can see it. Commercial owners also have to upload a photo of the fixed tag for KYV.

Why does a peeled-off sticker stop working?

FASTag stickers are tamper-evident: the antenna tears when you peel the label, so a removed tag usually stops reading. This is deliberate, because each tag is linked to one registration number and must not move between vehicles.

When you change your windscreen

A new windscreen means a new tag. Ask for a replacement before the glass is changed or straight after, and keep the old tag ID handy when you call or file the request on the portal.

Holding the tag up by hand

Holding a loose tag against the glass at the lane often fails and can be treated as non-affixation. Get a proper replacement instead of relying on luck at every plaza.

Close the tag through customer care. HDFC refunds the deposit to KYC customers: within 7 to 10 working days to an HDFC account, or by demand draft for others.

Can I buy the FASTag Annual Pass on an HDFC tag?

Yes, if the vehicle is a private car, jeep or van with a valid tag. The pass is bought through the Rajmargyatra app or the NHAI site, not from HDFC.
