Near pollution check center: how to find one and pass

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 24 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

To find a near pollution check center, search your map app for a PUC or emission testing centre, then pick one that is computerised and uploads results online. Most sit at fuel stations or workshops. The test takes a few minutes, the fee is fixed by your state, and the certificate appears on Parivahan, where you can download it with your vehicle number.

Key takeaways

  • Use only an authorised, computerised centre so the result reaches the national vehicle record.
  • A new vehicle needs no PUC test for the first year after registration.
  • After that, BS-IV and BS-VI vehicles get 12 months of validity; the default is 6 months.
  • Fees are notified by each state: Delhi charges Rs 80 for a two-wheeler and Karnataka Rs 80 too.
  • Driving without a valid certificate can cost up to Rs 10,000 and a 3-month licence disqualification.
  • State pollution control boards regulate factories; they do not test private vehicles.

What is a near pollution check center?

A near pollution check center is simply the closest authorised place that tests your vehicle’s exhaust and issues a Pollution Under Control certificate. Most are small booths at fuel stations, workshops or roadside kiosks, licensed by the state transport department and connected to the national vehicle database.

Four steps to find a near pollution check center and get a valid PUC certificate
Call ahead: not every centre tests diesel vehicles.

Who runs these centres

They are usually private businesses. The transport department authorises them, sets the fee and checks their equipment. The owner of the booth earns the fee, and the result is uploaded to the same system that holds your registration record.

Why the nearest one is not always the best

Distance matters less than equipment. A centre that tests only petrol vehicles is useless to a diesel car owner. A centre whose software is offline cannot upload your result, so a printed slip from it may not show up when an officer scans your number.

How do you find a pollution test near me?

The quickest way to find a pollution test near me is a map search for “PUC centre” or “emission test”, filtered by distance and recent reviews. Fuel stations on main roads are the most common locations, followed by authorised workshops and dealer service centres.

Searching on a map app

Type the search, then open each listing and look at photos of the booth. A real centre shows a computer, a gas analyser with a probe, a camera for the number plate and a printer. Read recent reviews for complaints about refusals or overcharging.

What happens at a pollution check near me?

At a pollution check near me, the operator photographs your number plate, places a probe in the exhaust, runs the engine at the required speed and reads the result on screen. If the readings are within limits, the system issues a certificate within minutes.

The order of the visit

You park beside the booth, give your registration number and mobile number, and keep the engine running. The operator enters details, inserts the probe and records the reading. You pay the fee, then receive a printout or an SMS link.

What the operator should not do

The operator should never issue a certificate without putting the probe in your exhaust. A certificate with no real test is an offence for the centre and leaves you exposed, because the reading stored in the record does not match your vehicle.

What does a pollution testing center do?

A pollution testing center measures the gases leaving your exhaust, compares them with the limits for your fuel and emission norm, and issues a pass certificate or a rejection slip. It does nothing else: it does not repair, inspect brakes or renew your registration.

Equipment it must have

A petrol, CNG or LPG vehicle is tested with a gas analyser that reads carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. A diesel vehicle is tested with a smoke meter that measures how much light the exhaust blocks. Many booths have both.

Records it keeps

Every test is logged with the vehicle number, a plate photo, the readings and the date. Since the 2021 uniform format, these records are linked to the National Register, so a test done anywhere in India is visible to enforcement officers.

What is the PUCC meaning?

The PUCC meaning is Pollution Under Control Certificate. It is the paper or digital document that proves your vehicle’s exhaust passed an emission test on a given date and stays valid until the printed expiry. Officers may ask for it along with your RC, licence and insurance.

PUCC meaning in practice: first year exemption, twelve month and six month validity
The expiry date printed on your certificate is the one that counts.

PUC and PUCC are the same thing

People say PUC, PUCC, pollution paper or pollution certificate. They all mean one document. The extra “C” just stands for certificate. A detailed guide to the document itself is in our PUC certificate guide.

What PUC means on vehicle papers

On your papers, PUC means Pollution Under Control. It sits beside insurance as a document you must carry, but the RTO does not print it on the RC. The rule itself is rule 115 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.

How do you pick a pollution check centre near me?

Pick a pollution check centre near me by checking three things: the centre is computerised and online, it tests your fuel type, and it displays the state fee. A centre that meets all three will give you a certificate that appears in the national record.

Signs of a good centre

Look for a printed rate board, an authorisation number displayed at the booth, a working printer and a camera. The operator should enter your mobile number so the system sends an SMS confirmation. Ask for a receipt if you pay in cash.

Signs to walk away

Walk away if the operator offers a certificate without testing, charges much more than the displayed rate, or says the result will “come online later”. A genuine test uploads at once, and you should be able to see it the same day.

How is pollution testing done on petrol and diesel engines?

Pollution testing works differently by fuel. Petrol, CNG and LPG engines are tested at idle and at a higher speed with a probe that reads gases. Diesel engines go through a free acceleration test, where the throttle is pressed quickly several times while a smoke meter reads opacity.

Petrol, CNG and LPG test

The probe sits in the tailpipe while the engine idles, then while it runs faster. The analyser reports CO as a percentage and HC in parts per million. For four-wheelers, some machines also report lambda, a measure of the air-fuel mix.

Diesel smoke test

The operator presses the accelerator to the floor and releases it, repeating a few times. The smoke meter records how dark the exhaust is. A diesel with a clogged air filter or worn injectors usually fails this test first.

Can you do a pollution check by vehicle number?

Yes, you can do a pollution check by vehicle number online, but only to see or print the result of a test already done. Parivahan’s PUC page shows the latest certificate for your vehicle when you enter the registration number and the last five characters of the chassis number.

Steps for pollution check by vehicle number and downloading the PUC certificate PDF
Only a certificate issued by an online centre appears here.

What the online check shows

It shows the certificate number, test date, validity date, centre name and readings. If nothing appears, the last test was done at a centre that did not upload, or your vehicle has never had an online test.

Car pollution check online

A car pollution check online can only show or print a past result. No website can measure exhaust gases, so any offer of “online PUC renewal” without a test is a fake that will not match the national record.

How does a bike pollution check work?

A bike pollution check uses the same gas analyser as a petrol car, with a probe sized for a smaller exhaust. The operator warms the engine, takes the idle reading and prints the certificate. For most scooters and motorcycles, the whole visit takes only a few minutes.

Dos and don'ts for a bike pollution check at an authorised emission testing centre
A certificate without a real test is not in the national record.

Two-stroke and four-stroke bikes

Older two-stroke bikes run on a mix of oil and petrol, so they show higher hydrocarbon readings and have separate limits. Four-stroke bikes made to BS-IV or BS-VI norms usually pass easily if they are serviced on time.

A common reason bikes fail

A cracked or modified silencer lets outside air into the exhaust and confuses the reading. Bikes with aftermarket exhausts or a leaking joint can fail even when the engine is healthy. Fix the leak before the test.

What to carry to the nearest pollution testing centre

Carry the vehicle, warmed up, and your registration details to the nearest pollution testing centre. The operator needs the number, a working mobile for the SMS, and the fee. No form, photo or Aadhaar is needed for a routine test.

Checklist of what to carry to a pollution testing center for a PUC test
The mobile number on the certificate receives the expiry reminder.

Documents

Keep your RC or virtual RC handy so the operator can confirm the registration number and fuel type. An old PUC certificate helps if the centre needs to check your vehicle’s emission norm. Insurance is not checked at a PUC booth.

Paying the fee

Most centres take cash and UPI. The rate is fixed by the state, so you should not be asked for more. Keep the receipt or the SMS, because it carries the certificate number you may need later.

What is an emission testing center?

An emission testing center is the official name many states use for a PUC centre. The words mean the same thing: an authorised booth that tests exhaust gases. Karnataka, for example, commonly calls them emission testing centres, while Delhi and most northern states say PUC centres.

Auto emission testing centre

An auto emission testing centre is the same booth, often near an auto-rickshaw stand or on a commercial road. Three-wheelers, taxis and goods vehicles are tested here exactly like private vehicles, with the fee notified for their category.

Nearest emissions testing for a fleet

Fleet owners often arrange a centre to test several vehicles in one visit. The rules do not change: each vehicle is tested individually, photographed and recorded under its own registration number.

Vehicle pollution testing centre or ATS fitness centre?

A vehicle pollution testing centre only checks exhaust emissions and issues a PUC certificate. An automated testing station checks the whole vehicle for roadworthiness before a fitness certificate is renewed. Private cars visit the PUC centre regularly; commercial vehicles also need the fitness test.

What the fitness test adds

Brakes, lights, steering, suspension, tyres and emissions are all checked at an automated station. Our guide to the ATS fitness center explains who needs that test and how bookings work.

Which one you need

If an officer asks for a pollution certificate, the PUC centre is enough. If your commercial vehicle’s fitness has expired, a PUC certificate does not replace the fitness certificate. Both documents must be valid.

What is an emission certificate?

An emission certificate is another name for the PUC certificate. It records the vehicle number, fuel, emission norm, readings, test date and expiry date, with a QR code that officers can scan. Since June 2021 every state issues it in one uniform format.

What the 2021 format changed

MoRTH’s notification of 14 June 2021 made the certificate uniform across India, linked the PUC database to the National Register and added a QR code. It also introduced a rejection slip for vehicles that fail.

PUC images and spotting a fake

People search PUC images to see what a real certificate looks like: software-printed, never handwritten, with a certificate number, readings, dates and a QR code. Scan the code and check the number on Parivahan; an edited image of someone else’s certificate is a forgery.

Who needs a vehicle pollution check?

Every petrol, diesel, CNG or LPG vehicle needs a vehicle pollution check once one year has passed from first registration. This covers bikes, scooters, cars, three-wheelers, taxis, buses and trucks. Battery electric vehicles are exempt because they produce no exhaust.

Hybrid and CNG-converted vehicles

A hybrid with a petrol engine is tested like a petrol vehicle. A CNG kit fitted after purchase must be endorsed on the RC, and the centre tests the vehicle on the fuel recorded there.

Non polluting vehicle certificate

There is no separate non polluting vehicle certificate in Indian rules. The search usually means the PUC certificate, which shows emissions were within limits on the test date. Only battery electric vehicles skip the test altogether.

What to expect during a car pollution check

A car pollution check follows the same steps as a bike, with a longer probe and, for diesel cars, the free acceleration smoke test. Leave the engine running, switch off the air conditioning and keep the car in neutral while the operator works.

Petrol and CNG cars

The operator reads the idle values, then raises engine speed for a second reading. CNG cars with a dual-fuel setup are usually tested on the fuel the engine runs on during the test, so ask the operator which mode to use.

Car pollution centre near me for diesel cars

Not every booth has a smoke meter. Before you drive to a car pollution centre near me with a diesel car, call and ask whether diesel tests are available. Dealer service centres and highway fuel stations are more likely to have one.

How to download pollution certificate?

To learn how to download pollution certificate copies, open the PUC certificate option on the Parivahan website, enter your vehicle number and the last five chassis characters, and print the result. The download only works for a test uploaded by an online centre.

  1. Open the PUC certificate page. Find it under online services on the Parivahan website.
  2. Enter the vehicle number. Type it exactly as printed on the RC, without spaces.
  3. Add the chassis digits. Enter the last five characters of the chassis number and the captcha.
  4. View the details. Check the test date, expiry date and centre name.
  5. Print or save. Print the certificate or save it as a PDF on your phone.

If the download page shows nothing

Wait a few hours after the test, then try again. If it still shows nothing, call the centre with your receipt. Some guides note the print option appears only while the certificate is valid.

Keeping a digital copy

Save the PDF to your phone and keep it with your other documents. Our DigiLocker app download guide explains how to store vehicle papers in one place.

Is pollution certificate required for BS6 new car?

Is pollution certificate required for BS6 new car owners in the first year? No. Rule 115(7) requires a certificate only after one year from first registration. Many dealers still hand over a certificate at delivery, valid for that first year.

When the first test is due

Mark the date one year after registration in your calendar. From that day, you need a valid certificate. Insurance renewals often fall around the same time, so many owners do both together.

BS6 bikes too

The same first-year rule applies to new BS6 bikes and scooters. After the first year, they follow the same validity rules as cars of the same norm.

What is the PUC validity for new car?

The PUC validity for new car owners is one year from first registration, during which no test is required. After that, each certificate for a BS-IV or BS-VI vehicle is valid for twelve months, under the proviso to rule 115(7).

Vehicle situationWhen a test is neededValidity of each certificate
New vehicleAfter 1 year from first registrationNot applicable in year one
BS-IV or BS-VI vehicleBefore the current certificate expires12 months
Other vehiclesBefore the current certificate expires6 months
Failed testRepair and retestNo certificate until it passes
Source: CMVR rule 115(7) as quoted in Kerala High Court judgment. Checked October 2026.

The pollution certificate is valid for how long?

The pollution certificate is valid for six months by default, or twelve months for BS-IV and BS-VI vehicles. Validity runs from the test date, so testing early does not stretch your cover; renew a few days before expiry.

The printed date is final

Whatever the general rule, the expiry printed on your certificate is what officers check. If the date looks wrong for your vehicle, ask the centre to correct the emission norm before you leave.

What is the pollution certificate price?

The pollution certificate price is notified by each state and differs by vehicle type and fuel. Delhi revised its rates in July 2024, and Karnataka revised its rates in August 2026. Centres must display the rate and cannot charge more.

Pollution certificate price table comparing Delhi and Karnataka PUC fees by vehicle type
Each state notifies its own rates; check the board at the centre.

Other states

Every other state has its own notification. For a closer look at car rates, including older Delhi figures people still search for, see our car pollution price page.

Bike PUC price

The bike PUC price is the lowest category: Rs 80 in both Delhi and Karnataka. The bike pollution price elsewhere follows each state’s notification. Karnataka lets only computerised centres charge its revised rate; report overcharging to your RTO.

What is the pollution fine without a valid PUC?

The pollution fine for driving without a valid certificate is set by section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act: up to three months’ jail, a fine of up to Rs 10,000, or both, plus disqualification from holding a licence for three months.

Challans and payment

Our pollution fine guide covers how these challans are issued and paid. Delhi’s drives near petrol pumps are covered separately in the pollution challan in Delhi guide.

Getting a test after a challan

A challan does not end the problem. You still need a valid certificate, so visit a centre the same day and keep the receipt in case you are stopped again.

What happens at a pollution check point?

At a pollution check point, traffic or transport officers stop vehicles and check PUC status, usually by scanning the number in the national database. Some drives use mobile testing vans; others simply check the record and issue a challan if it has lapsed.

Fuel station checks in Delhi

Delhi enforced a No PUCC, No Fuel rule from 18 December 2025 and intensified it from 1 October 2026. Reports say cameras at about 500 fuel stations read number plates and flag vehicles without a valid certificate.

What to show

Show the paper certificate or the PDF on your phone. Officers can confirm it online, so a real certificate does not need to be laminated or stamped. A screenshot of a website is weaker than the PDF itself.

Where is a smoke testing centre near me?

A smoke testing centre near me is any PUC booth with a diesel smoke meter. Diesel cars, SUVs, pick-ups, buses and trucks need this kind of centre. Search for “diesel PUC” on a map and call before going, because many petrol-only booths do not have the meter.

Quick answers about a smoke testing centre visit, new BS6 cars and lost PUC papers
Three questions drivers ask most at the counter.

Smoke testing center for trucks

A smoke testing center for heavy vehicles needs space for a large vehicle to park beside the booth. Highway fuel stations and transport nagar areas usually have one. Fleet operators often book a time to avoid long queues.

Smoke emission test near me for older diesels

Older diesels produce more soot. A smoke emission test near me goes better if you service the air filter and injectors first, and drive the vehicle for a while before the test so the engine is warm.

Can you get an emission test in petrol bunk near me?

Yes. An emission test in petrol bunk near me is the most common option in many cities, because fuel stations host booths that serve passing traffic. You can fill up and test in one stop, as long as the booth is open and its software is online.

Petrol pump pollution check near me

A petrol pump pollution check near me is run by the booth operator, not the fuel company. The rate is still the state’s rate. If the booth is closed, the fuel attendant cannot issue a certificate.

What are the usual pollution check timings?

Pollution check timings are set by each centre, not by the government, so there is no single opening time across India. Booths at fuel stations often keep daytime hours, while workshops follow their own working hours and may close on their weekly holiday.

Checking hours before you go

Open the map listing and check the hours, then call to confirm. Listings are sometimes outdated, especially after a centre changes owner or moves to another fuel station.

Emission test near me open now

Filter the map by “open now”, then call the top two results. A booth can be open while its software is down, so a quick call saves a wasted trip. Do not count on a Sunday test on your expiry day.

What is a pradushan janch kendra?

A pradushan janch kendra is the Hindi term for a pollution check centre. “Pradushan” means pollution and “janch kendra” means testing centre. The same booths, rules, fees and certificates apply whatever the name on the signboard.

Pollution kendra near me

A pollution kendra near me search is just as useful. Check the same signs of an authorised centre: computer, analyser, camera, printer and a displayed rate board.

Emission test Bangalore and the ETC Karnataka transport department system

An emission test Bangalore drivers take happens at an emission testing centre authorised by the Karnataka Transport Department. People often call these booths ETC, short for emission testing centre. Fees follow the state’s August 2026 order: Rs 80 for two-wheelers and Rs 150 for petrol cars.

Emission test certificate Bangalore

The emission test certificate Bangalore centres issue is the national PUC format. It appears on Parivahan like a certificate from any other state, so you can download it the same way.

Karnatakapuc login and ETC check

We could not confirm an official public site called “karnatakapuc”; operators log in to their testing software, and drivers need no login. For an emission test certificate online Karnataka owners can trust, or an “ETC check” on a vehicle, use the Parivahan PUC page.

Pollution under control certificate Telangana

The pollution under control certificate Telangana centres issue is the same national format used everywhere. Private operators authorised by the Telangana transport department run most booths, at fuel stations and workshops in Hyderabad and across the state.

Finding a Telangana centre

Search for a PUC centre in your area and confirm it is computerised. A 2018 report said the transport department planned government-run testing centres at some Hyderabad RTOs; check with your RTO whether one is working near you.

Telangana fees

We have not verified the current Telangana fee notification, so we do not list figures here. Check the rate board at the centre and the Telangana transport department website.

Who is the Pollution Testing Stations Association Telangana?

People search for the Pollution Testing Stations Association Telangana to reach a trade body of private centre owners. We could not find an official website or verified contact for an association by that exact name, so we do not list one.

What such associations do

Associations of centre owners usually represent operators when fees are revised, as happened in Karnataka in 2026. They do not issue certificates and cannot settle a complaint about a test.

Where to go instead

For a complaint about a Telangana centre, contact your local RTO. For a certificate problem, ask the centre to check its upload, then use the Parivahan PUC page.

Where to get a pollution certificate Chennai drivers can use?

A pollution certificate Chennai drivers can use comes from any authorised emission testing centre in Tamil Nadu or elsewhere. Most Chennai booths are at fuel stations and service centres. The certificate is the national format and appears on Parivahan.

Chennai fees

We have not verified Tamil Nadu’s current fee notification, so this guide does not list a Chennai rate. The centre must display it, and you should pay only that amount.

What is a pollution board?

A pollution board is a State Pollution Control Board, a government body that regulates air and water pollution from factories, hospitals, buildings and other establishments. It does not test private vehicles or issue PUC certificates. The national body is the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

Comparison of an emission testing center and a state pollution control board's work
Drivers need a PUC centre; businesses deal with the board.

PCB pollution meaning

PCB stands for Pollution Control Board. Searches for “PCB pollution” usually mean the state board. Its staff monitor air quality, inspect industries and act on complaints about factory smoke or waste.

Why drivers get confused

Both deal with “pollution”, but a PUC centre is under the transport department, and the board is under the environment department. For a vehicle test, you need a PUC centre, not the board.

What is a pollution board certificate or pollution NOC?

A pollution board certificate usually means the consent or no-objection certificate a state board issues to a business. A factory, hotel or clinic applies for “consent to establish” before building and “consent to operate” before starting. Individual vehicle owners do not need one.

Pollution NOC for a vehicle

People sometimes say pollution NOC when they mean a PUC certificate for a vehicle sale or RC transfer. The RTO checks whether a valid PUC exists; there is no separate pollution NOC for a private vehicle.

Applying as a business

Each state board has its own online system. Kerala, for example, uses krocmms.nic.in for consent applications. Check your state board’s website for the forms and fees that apply to your unit.

Kerala state pollution body: what does it do?

The Kerala State Pollution Control Board regulates industries, hospitals, commercial buildings and other units in Kerala. It grants consent to establish and operate through its online system, krocmms.nic.in. It does not test vehicles; Kerala drivers use authorised PUC centres like everyone else.

Kerala PUC centres

Kerala’s PUC booths are authorised by the state Motor Vehicles Department. The certificate follows the national format and shows on Parivahan.

Kerala court guidance on PUC

A Kerala High Court judgment in 2023 discussed the twelve-month validity for BS-IV and BS-VI vehicles under rule 115(7). That reading is the basis for the validity figures on this page.

How do you find a pollution control office near me?

To find a pollution control office near me, search for your state pollution control board’s regional office. Boards have regional or district offices that handle consent applications and local complaints. For a vehicle certificate, go to a PUC centre instead.

What a regional office handles

Regional offices inspect units, process consent renewals and respond to complaints about industrial smoke, effluent and noise. Office hours and contacts are on each state board’s website.

Pollution control centre near me

A search for pollution control centre near me often means a PUC booth. If you want a vehicle test, search “PUC centre” instead, so the map does not send you to a board office.

How do you make a pollution complaint?

To make a pollution complaint, choose the channel that matches the problem: traffic police or the CPCB Sameer app for smoky vehicles, the Green Delhi app in Delhi, the state board for factories, and the RTO for a dishonest PUC centre. Add a photo, location and time.

Air pollution complaint through Sameer

An air pollution complaint on Sameer is filed under public complaint, with a category, photos and a complaint ID to track progress. CPCB data shows response times vary, so follow up if nothing happens.

Are cpucc net, Sai PUC centre and RCM PUC centre official?

Searches for “cpucc net”, Sai PUC centre or “RCM PUC centre near me” look for specific websites or private booths. We could not confirm cpucc net as an official government site. Named centres are private businesses; we cannot vouch for any individual one.

Checking a named centre

If a named centre is near you, check the same things as any other: a computer, analyser, camera and printer, a displayed rate, and a certificate that appears on Parivahan the same day.

Websites with similar names

Do not enter your chassis number on a site you cannot verify. The official PUC record is on Parivahan, and nothing else is needed to view or print your certificate.

What does pollution CO mean on the test slip?

On a test slip, pollution CO means carbon monoxide, one of the gases a petrol, CNG or LPG engine releases. The analyser reports it as a percentage of the exhaust. A high CO reading usually means the engine is burning too much fuel for the air it gets.

CO and HC together

HC, hydrocarbons, means unburnt fuel. CO and HC are read together. The limits differ by vehicle type and emission norm, and the centre’s software compares them automatically.

Bringing CO down

A dirty air filter, worn spark plugs or a faulty sensor can push CO up. A basic service often fixes the problem before a retest.

What happens if vehicle pollution is over the limit?

If vehicle pollution is over the limit, the centre issues a rejection slip instead of a certificate. The slip, introduced in the 2021 format, records the readings so a mechanic can find the fault. You repair the vehicle and test again.

Common reasons for failing a vehicle pollution test and the fixes that usually work
Keep the rejection slip; it shows the reading your mechanic needs.

Using the rejection slip

Take the slip to your mechanic. It shows which reading failed, saving time on diagnosis. The slip can also support a retest at another centre if you suspect the first machine was faulty.

Car pollution and engine health

High car pollution readings often point to wider problems, like oil burning, a failing catalytic converter or injector wear. Fixing them can improve mileage as well as passing the test.

What is the nearest pollution centre for a vehicle?

The nearest pollution centre for a vehicle is the closest authorised booth that tests its fuel type and is online. For a petrol bike that may be the fuel station round the corner; for a diesel SUV it may be a dealer workshop a little further away.

Tracking the date in an app

Official apps show some document dates for your vehicle. Our mParivahan guide explains how to add your RC and see those details at a glance, so you know when the next test is due.

Nearest pollution center while travelling

On a long trip, the nearest pollution center is usually at a highway fuel station. Test before you set out if your certificate expires during the journey, because a booth on an unfamiliar route may be closed.

Near pollution check center questions

How long does a pollution test take?

At a computerised centre the test itself usually takes a few minutes. Waiting time depends on how busy the centre is, so mornings on weekdays are often quicker.

Do I need an appointment at a pollution check centre?

Most centres work on a walk-in basis. Calling ahead is still useful to confirm opening hours and that the centre has a diesel smoke meter if you drive a diesel vehicle.

Is a pollution certificate needed for an electric vehicle?

No. A battery electric vehicle has no tailpipe, so there is nothing to test. Hybrids with a petrol engine are tested like petrol vehicles.

Can any centre in India test my vehicle?

Yes. The certificate is in a uniform national format since 2021, so a test in another state is valid wherever you drive.

What if I lose my pollution certificate?

Download it again from the Parivahan PUC page with your vehicle number and the last five chassis characters. The centre can also reprint it.

Does the fuel station refuse fuel without PUC?

In Delhi, the No PUCC, No Fuel rule lets pumps refuse fuel to vehicles without a valid certificate. Check local rules in other states.

Can I get a PUC test for a vehicle registered in another state?

Yes. The centre tests the vehicle in front of it and uploads the result against its registration number, whichever state issued the RC.

Why did my centre give a validity shorter than I expected?

The validity is set by the rules for your vehicle type and the centre's software. If the printed date looks wrong, ask the centre to check the vehicle's emission norm before you leave.

Is the PUC fee the same everywhere?

No. Each state notifies its own rates. Delhi and Karnataka both charge Rs 80 for two-wheelers, but car and diesel rates differ.

What is the penalty for no pollution certificate?

Under section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, up to Rs 10,000 fine or 3 months' jail or both, plus 3 months' licence disqualification.

Can I keep the PUC certificate on my phone?

Yes. Save the PDF from Parivahan, or keep it with your other documents in DigiLocker or mParivahan, and show it when an officer asks.

Does a PUC centre check noise or brakes?

No. A PUC test checks exhaust emissions only. Roadworthiness for commercial vehicles is checked at a fitness test centre.
