PUC certificate: what it is, what it costs and how to get one

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 24 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

A PUC certificate (Pollution Under Control certificate) proves your vehicle's exhaust passed an emission test at an authorised centre. A new vehicle needs its first test one year after registration. After that, BS-IV and BS-VI vehicles get 12 months of validity and others 6 months. Fees are set by each state, for example Rs 80 for a two-wheeler in Delhi.

Key takeaways

  • The test can only happen at a computerised centre; nothing replaces the visit, but the certificate can be checked and printed online.
  • No PUC is needed for the first year after registration, then it is due before the year ends.
  • BS-IV and BS-VI vehicles get 12 months per certificate; the default validity is 6 months.
  • Two-wheeler fees: Rs 80 in Delhi and Karnataka, Rs 60 in Maharashtra after the August 2026 revision.
  • You can keep the certificate in DigiLocker or check its expiry in mParivahan.
  • Driving without a valid one can cost up to Rs 10,000 and a 3-month licence disqualification.

What is a PUC certificate?

A PUC certificate is the official record that your vehicle’s exhaust was measured on a set date and found within the legal limits for its fuel and emission norm. It carries an expiry date, and you must keep a valid one for every petrol, diesel, CNG or LPG vehicle you drive on public roads.

PUC certificate validity timeline from first registration to six and twelve month renewals
Count from the expiry printed on your last slip, not from today.

Why the law asks for it

Engines wear out. A car that met its factory norm when new can, after a few years of poor servicing, release far more carbon monoxide or smoke. The periodic emission test catches that drift before it adds to city smog.

Who issues it

Authorised testing centres issue the certificate, not the RTO. They are mostly private booths licensed by the state transport department. The centre runs the test, uploads the reading to the national vehicle database and prints or sends you the certificate.

What is the full form of PUC?

The full form of PUC is Pollution Under Control. When people add a “C” and write PUCC, they mean Pollution Under Control Certificate. Both terms point to the same emission test document that traffic officers, insurers and fuel stations in some cities may ask you to show.

PUC, PUCC and pollution paper

In daily speech the document has many names: PUC, PUCC, pollution paper, smoke certificate, emission slip. If you prefer to read this in Hinglish, our guide on PUC certificate kya hota hai covers the basics in simple terms.

The other PUC: Pre-University Course

In Karnataka and a few other states, PUC also means Pre-University Course, the two years of study after Class 10. If you landed here looking for the exam meaning, see our page on the 2nd PUC full form instead.

What does the pollution under control information on it show?

The pollution under control information on a modern certificate covers who and what was tested, when, by which centre and with what result.

Checklist of the pollution under control information printed on a uniform PUC certificate
If any of these is missing, ask the centre before you leave.

Vehicle and owner details

You will see the registration number, vehicle class, fuel type, emission norm and a photo of the number plate taken at the booth. The owner’s mobile number is usually masked except for the last digits.

Readings and dates

The lower half lists the measured values against the permitted limits, the date and time of test, the expiry date and the centre’s code. A certificate number and QR code tie it all together.

What is a computerised pollution under control certificate?

A computerised pollution under control certificate is one generated by software connected to the national database, rather than written by hand. The analyser feeds readings straight into the system, a camera captures the plate, and the certificate is printed from that record, which stops operators from typing invented numbers.

How it differs from the old paper slips

Older certificates were often handwritten or printed from standalone machines. Today a certificate that cannot be traced online is treated as doubtful, even if the paper looks neat and carries a stamp.

The QR code and the National Register

A MoRTH notification of 14 June 2021 made the format uniform across India, added a QR code and linked PUC data to the National Register of vehicles. It also introduced a rejection slip for vehicles that fail.

What does PUC emission testing measure?

PUC emission testing measures the gases or smoke that leave your tailpipe. The equipment depends on the fuel. Spark-ignition engines (petrol, CNG, LPG) are checked for gases, while diesel engines are checked for how dark the smoke is.

Petrol, CNG and LPG engines

A probe goes into the tailpipe while the engine idles and, for four-wheelers, at a raised speed. A gas analyser reports carbon monoxide as a percentage and hydrocarbons in parts per million.

Diesel engines

Diesel engines are tested by pressing the accelerator fully several times while a smoke meter reads opacity, the share of light blocked by the smoke. Centre owners comparing equipment for this can read our note on PUC machine price and what each analyser does.

Is pollution certificate required for car owners?

Yes, a pollution certificate is required for car owners once the first year after registration has passed. The rule applies to private and commercial cars alike, whether petrol, diesel or CNG.

Private cars

For a private car, the PUC sits alongside the RC, licence and insurance as a document you must produce on demand. It is separate from a fitness certificate, which checks brakes, lights and body condition.

Electric and hybrid cars

A battery electric car has no tailpipe and therefore needs no PUC. A hybrid has a petrol engine, so it is tested like any petrol car.

Is pollution certificate required for BS6 vehicles?

Yes, a pollution certificate is required for BS6 vehicles too. A cleaner emission norm reduces the limits the engine must meet, but it does not exempt the vehicle from periodic checks.

Why BS6 still needs a test

A BS6 engine relies on sensors, a catalytic converter and, in diesels, a particulate filter. If any of these fail, emissions rise quickly while the car still drives normally.

Longer validity for BS-IV and BS-VI

The proviso to rule 115(7) gives vehicles built to BS-IV or BS-VI norms twelve months of validity per test. Older BS-III and earlier vehicles stay on the six-month cycle.

Is PUC required for new vehicle buyers?

Is PUC required for new vehicle buyers? Not at once. A new vehicle is treated as compliant for one year from its first registration, so you do not need a test in that period. The first PUC certificate becomes due as that year ends, and the regular cycle starts from there.

The first-year exemption

The exemption comes from rule 115(7) of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules. For a deeper look at the car-specific question, read our page answering is PUC required for new car buyers in their first year.

What the dealer gives you

Some dealers hand over a PUC slip at delivery; others say none is needed. Set a phone reminder for a few weeks before the first anniversary so the test does not slip past the deadline.

What is the new car pollution validity?

The new car pollution validity works like this: no certificate is needed for one year after first registration. Once that year ends, the car is tested, and a BS-VI car gets a 12-month certificate.

Vehicle stageWhat the rule saysValidity of each certificate
First year after registrationNo PUC neededNot applicable
BS-IV or BS-VI vehicle after year oneTest before expiry12 months
Older vehicle after year oneTest before expiry6 months
Vehicle that failsRepair and retestNo certificate issued
Source: CMVR rule 115(7) as quoted in Kerala High Court judgment. Checked October 2026.

Counting the first year

The year runs from the date of first registration, not the purchase date or invoice date. If you bought in March and the RTO registered the car in April, April is your starting point.

Imported and re-registered cars

A car re-registered in a new state keeps its original first registration date. A car registered after import is new for this purpose, so its one-year window starts from that first Indian registration.

What is the new bike pollution certificate validity?

The new bike pollution certificate validity follows the same rule as cars. A new scooter or motorcycle is exempt for one year after first registration. After its first test, a BS-VI two-wheeler gets 12 months per certificate.

New scooters and motorcycles

Since two-wheelers are cheap to test, some owners take the first test early just to have a slip. It is usually better to wait until the first year is nearly over.

Second-hand bikes

When you buy a used bike, check the current PUC expiry before paying. A seller with nothing valid may be hiding an engine that fails the test.

How long is car pollution validity after the first test?

Car pollution validity after the first test is 12 months for BS-IV and BS-VI cars and 6 months for older ones. There is no grace period built into the rule, so the certificate stops being valid at the end of the printed expiry date.

Twelve months or six

Most cars sold from 2010 onward in major cities were BS-IV, and all new cars since April 2020 are BS-VI, so twelve months covers the majority. A BS-III diesel or an old petrol car is on the shorter cycle and needs a test twice a year.

When the printed date looks wrong

If a BS-VI car gets a six-month certificate, the centre’s software may have the wrong norm for your number. Show the RC, where the norm is printed, and ask the operator to recheck.

What are PUC charges in 2026?

PUC charges in 2026 depend on your state, vehicle type and fuel. Each state transport department notifies the rate, and centres must display it. Two-wheeler tests cost Rs 60 to Rs 80 in the states below, while diesel vehicles cost the most because their smoke meters are dearer to run.

PUC charges compared for bikes, petrol cars and diesel vehicles in Delhi, Karnataka, Maharashtra
Each state notifies its own fee and centres must display it.

Who fixes the fee

The fee is fixed by state notification, not by MoRTH. Karnataka and Maharashtra both raised fees in August 2026; Delhi last revised its rates in July 2024.

What the fee includes

The fee covers the test, upload and printed certificate. You should not pay extra for the SMS, the print or a “service charge”.

What are PUC charges in Delhi?

PUC charges in Delhi are Rs 80 for petrol, CNG or LPG two- and three-wheelers, Rs 110 for petrol, CNG or LPG four-wheelers and Rs 140 for diesel vehicles. These rates came into force in July 2024.

Vehicle type in DelhiFee before July 2024Fee from July 2024
Two- and three-wheeler (petrol, CNG, LPG)Rs 60Rs 80
Four-wheeler (petrol, CNG, LPG)Rs 80Rs 110
Diesel vehicleRs 100Rs 140
Source: Deccan Herald on Delhi PUC fee revision, July 2024. Checked October 2026.

The 2024 revision

The July 2024 increase was the first in many years. The increase was roughly a third on every class, with diesel tests going up by Rs 40.

No PUCC, No Fuel

Delhi enforces a No PUCC, No Fuel rule from 18 December 2025. From 1 October 2026 it was stepped up, with number plate cameras at about 500 fuel stations reading plates and flagging vehicles without a valid certificate.

What are PUC charges for bike owners?

PUC charges for bike owners are the lowest of any class. A two-wheeler test costs Rs 80 in Delhi and Rs 80 in Karnataka, and Rs 60 in Maharashtra after its August 2026 revision.

Delhi and Karnataka

Delhi’s Rs 80 rate applies to petrol, CNG and LPG two-wheelers. Karnataka raised its two-wheeler fee from Rs 65 to Rs 80 in August 2026, and only computerised centres may charge the new rate.

Maharashtra

Maharashtra’s two-wheeler fee went from Rs 50 to Rs 60. The transport department told centres to display the new chart and told its flying squads to check compliance.

What is the pollution certificate for bike price in other states?

The pollution certificate for bike price varies more between states than within them. The table compares three states whose current rates we could trace to a dated order.

VehicleDelhi feeKarnataka feeMaharashtra fee
Two-wheelerRs 80Rs 80Rs 60
Three-wheeler (petrol)Rs 80Rs 80Rs 120
Petrol, CNG or LPG carRs 110Rs 150Check rate board

Source: Deccan Herald on Delhi fees, July 2024, Daily Pioneer on Karnataka fees, August 2026, Free Press Journal on Maharashtra fees, August 2026. Checked October 2026.

Reading the rate board

Every centre should show a board listing each vehicle class and fuel with its fee. Match your vehicle to the right row: a CNG-fitted car pays the petrol and CNG rate, not the diesel one.

States not listed here

We list only rates we could tie to a dated order. Reports for Maharashtra cars gave two different figures, so we have left that cell for the board.

What is the car pollution certificate cost?

The car pollution certificate cost is Rs 110 to Rs 150 for petrol or CNG cars and Rs 140 to Rs 200 for diesel cars in Delhi and Karnataka.

Petrol and CNG cars

A petrol or CNG car pays Rs 110 in Delhi and Rs 150 in Karnataka. CNG-converted cars are tested on the fuel they run on at the time, so ask the operator which mode to use if your car switches between petrol and gas.

Diesel cars

A diesel car pays Rs 140 in Delhi, Rs 180 in Maharashtra and Rs 200 in Karnataka. Many small booths do not have a smoke meter, so check before driving there.

Why is the car pollution price different by state?

The car pollution price differs because each state sets its own fee based on local costs, the age of its last revision and pressure from centre owners. There is no national rate card.

Equipment and staff costs

Centres have to buy and calibrate analysers, pay for software, cameras and internet, and keep an operator on site through the day. Maharashtra’s 2026 order named testing equipment and staff pay as reasons for its increase.

Court cases and associations

Fee changes often follow pressure from PUC centre owners’ associations. In Maharashtra, the association went to the Bombay High Court, which asked the government to decide within four months.

Where is a pollution centre near me?

The nearest pollution centre near me is most often a booth at a fuel station on a main road, followed by authorised workshops and car or bike dealer service centres. The key check is that the booth is computerised and tests your fuel type.

Four steps to find a pollution centre near me that issues an online PUC
Fuel stations on main roads host most testing booths.

Fuel stations and workshops

Fuel stations host most booths because drivers already stop there. Multi-brand workshops often have one too, which helps if you fail: the mechanic can fix the fault and retest on the spot.

Dealer service centres

Many authorised dealers run a PUC booth for customers, and some include the test with a service. For tips on choosing between booths and what happens during the visit, read our detailed guide to finding a near pollution check center.

How do you find a pollution testing centre near me?

To find a pollution testing centre near me, search a map app for “PUC centre” or “emission test”, sort by distance and open each result to check photos, hours and recent reviews.

Map searches that work

Try several terms: PUC centre, PUCC, emission test and pollution check. Recent photos showing a computer and printer are a better sign than an old listing with no reviews.

Calling ahead

Call the number on the listing to confirm opening hours and that the system is online. If you drive a diesel, ask specifically whether the smoke meter is working that day.

What are computerised pollution under check centers?

Computerised pollution under check centers are testing booths whose analyser, camera and software are linked so that every result goes straight to the online database. People often say “pollution under check” when they mean pollution under control; both describe the same authorised, connected centre.

What makes a centre computerised

A computerised centre has an analyser or smoke meter wired to a computer, a camera that photographs the plate, a printer, and an internet connection to the PUC system.

Why it matters for you

Only a result uploaded by such a centre appears on Parivahan, in mParivahan and in the QR code. In Karnataka, the 2026 order lets only computerised centres charge the revised fee. A non-computerised slip may not survive a scan at a checkpoint.

What is a vehicle emission testing centre?

A vehicle emission testing centre is the formal name for a PUC centre: a licensed booth that measures exhaust emissions and issues the certificate. It is the same place you would find with a “pollution check” search.

Same booth, different name

Signboards may say emission testing centre, PUC centre, PUCC centre or pollution check. In Karnataka you may see “ETC” for emission test centre. The name on the board matters less than the authorisation number and the online connection.

Licensing by the transport department

A vehicle emission testing center needs authorisation from the state transport department and must use approved equipment. The department checks calibration and can suspend a centre that issues certificates without real tests.

How does a two wheeler emission test near me work?

A two wheeler emission test near me usually takes under five minutes. The operator photographs the plate, puts a probe in the silencer, reads carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons at idle, and prints the certificate if the readings pass.

Dos and don'ts for a two wheeler emission test at a computerised PUC centre
A clean plate helps the camera match the photo to your record.

The idle test

Two-wheelers are tested at idle. Do not twist the throttle while the probe is in, as that changes the reading. If the engine stalls or idles roughly, the analyser may record high hydrocarbons, which usually points to a dirty air filter or spark plug.

Plate photo and SMS

The camera must capture the full number plate, so wipe off dust or mud before you arrive. After the test, an SMS with the certificate number reaches the mobile number you gave.

Two wheeler pollution check for scooters and bikes

A two wheeler pollution check is the same process for scooters, mopeds and motorcycles: an idle test with a gas analyser. The limits depend on the emission norm and whether the engine is two-stroke or four-stroke.

Scooter pollution and automatic gearboxes

Scooter pollution tests are no different from bike tests, but the operator must hold the scooter steady as the rear wheel can creep with a CVT. Scooters that are only used for short trips often run rich, so ride them longer before the test.

Older two-stroke bikes

Two-stroke bikes burn oil with the fuel, so they read high on two wheeler pollution tests. Use the correct grade of two-stroke oil in the right ratio, and get the carburettor tuned.

What is a pollution check van?

A pollution check van is a mobile testing unit fitted with an analyser, camera and printer, which drives to housing societies, offices or markets to test vehicles on the spot. A few state transport departments have run such vans to reach areas with few fixed centres.

Doorstep testing in Patna

Bihar’s transport department started a mobile van service in Patna to issue certificates at vehicle owners’ doorsteps, beginning with 10 vans and planning to expand to other districts.

Risks with unauthorised vans

Not every van is genuine. In Odisha, the Angul RTO fined and seized a mobile PUC van that was allegedly issuing certificates without testing emissions. A certificate from such a van can be cancelled, and you are still responsible for driving without a valid one.

Can a mobile pollution check vehicle issue a valid PUC?

Yes, a mobile pollution check vehicle can issue a valid PUC certificate if it is authorised by the transport department and connected to the online system like a fixed centre. A van that prints a slip without a probe in your exhaust cannot.

What a van must have

Look for the same equipment as a booth: an analyser or smoke meter, a camera for the plate, a connected computer and a printer. The van should show its authorisation number.

Checking the result afterwards

The same evening, look up your vehicle on the Parivahan PUC page or in mParivahan. If the new expiry date shows, the van’s test is in the record. If nothing appears after a day, contact the operator and, if needed, the RTO.

How to check pollution certificate validity online?

To check pollution certificate validity online, open the PUC certificate option on the Parivahan website, enter your registration number, the last five characters of the chassis number and the captcha, then view the details.

Steps to check pollution certificate validity online with vehicle and chassis numbers
No result usually means the last test was not uploaded.
  1. Open the PUC page. Go to parivahan.gov.in and choose the PUC certificate option under online services.
  2. Enter the vehicle number. Type the registration number without spaces, exactly as printed on the RC.
  3. Add the chassis characters. Enter the last five characters of the chassis number and the captcha.
  4. Read the expiry. Check the valid-up-to date, then print or save the certificate as a PDF.

What you need

Keep your RC handy: the chassis number is printed on it and on a plate in the vehicle, usually near the windscreen or under the seat for a bike.

Reading the result

If the page shows an expiry in the future, your certificate is valid. If it shows a past date, renew now. A message saying no record was found means either the number was mistyped or the centre never uploaded the test.

How to check bike pollution validity?

To check bike pollution validity, use the same Parivahan PUC page as for cars, or search the bike’s number in mParivahan. Both show the last uploaded expiry date.

Using the vehicle number

Enter the bike’s registration number and the last five characters of the frame number from the RC. The result shows the valid-up-to date.

Using the SMS

The text message from the PUC system includes the certificate number and expiry. Save it in a folder or star it so it does not get lost.

How to check vehicle pollution status by number

To check vehicle pollution status by number, open mParivahan, type the registration number in the search bar and open the vehicle details. The PUCC validity date appears with insurance and fitness.

In mParivahan

mParivahan is the transport ministry’s own app. Along with the PUC date it shows the owner’s masked name, insurance validity and vehicle class. Our guide to the RTO app explains the other vehicle details you can see there.

When it shows N/A

A blank or N/A PUC field means no current test is linked to that number in the central system. Owners in some states, such as Karnataka, have reported that their test showed later or only in the state system. Ask the centre if the upload went through.

Can PUC be done online?

Can PUC be done online? No, the test itself cannot. Your vehicle has to stand at an authorised centre while the probe measures its exhaust. What you can do online is check the certificate’s validity, print or download it, store it in DigiLocker and look up any vehicle’s PUC date.

Pollution online apply sites

Search results for pollution online apply often show sites that ask for your number and payment and promise a certificate by email. No genuine service works that way. You would be paying for a document with no real test behind it, which will not match the record.

What booking apps really do

Some apps let you book a slot at a nearby centre or send a mechanic who takes you there. The test still happens at the booth, and the certificate still comes from the centre’s connected system.

How to renew pollution certificate?

To renew pollution certificate validity, take your vehicle to any authorised centre before the current expiry and get a fresh test. There is no separate renewal form or online fee.

Common problems when you renew a pollution certificate and the fixes that work
Keep the rejection slip if you fail; it shows the readings.

Timing your renewal

Renew a week or two before expiry, not on the last day. If the vehicle fails, you then have time to repair it while the old certificate is still valid.

Failing on renewal

If the vehicle fails, the centre gives a rejection slip with the readings. Show it to your mechanic: high CO points to fuelling, high HC to misfires or oil burning, heavy smoke to injectors or filters. Retest after the repair, at the same or another centre.

How to add PUC certificate in DigiLocker?

To add PUC certificate in DigiLocker, sign in, open Issued Documents, search the partner list for the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (All States), pick the PUC or emission certificate document and enter your vehicle number.

Five steps showing how to add a PUC certificate in DigiLocker from MoRTH records
Menu labels change now and then; search for PUC if you cannot see it.
  1. Open DigiLocker. Sign in to the app or website with your mobile number or Aadhaar.
  2. Go to Issued Documents. Tap the option to get more issued documents or search partners.
  3. Choose the transport ministry. Select Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (All States).
  4. Pick the PUC document. Choose the pollution or emission certificate from that department’s list.
  5. Enter your vehicle number. Type the registration number, fetch the record and save it.

Before you start

You need a DigiLocker account linked to your mobile number. If you have not installed it yet, see our DigiLocker app download guide.

If PUC is not listed

Menu labels change from time to time. If you do not see a PUC option, type “pollution” in the search box inside Issued Documents. If the fetch fails, your latest test may not have reached the central record yet; try again a day later.

How to add pollution certificate in DigiLocker as an upload

If the issued route does not work, here is how to add pollution certificate in DigiLocker by upload: open Uploaded Documents, choose the file option, select a clear scan or PDF of the certificate, and label it as a PUC or pollution certificate.

Uploading a scan

Use the PDF from the Parivahan PUC page rather than a photo where possible: it is sharper and the QR code stays readable.

Limits of an uploaded copy

An uploaded file is your own copy, not an issued document pulled from the government record. Officers may treat it like a photocopy. Use upload only as a backup and keep trying the issued route for full legal value.

Is PUC in DigiLocker accepted by police?

Yes, a PUC in DigiLocker that comes through the issued documents route is accepted as equal to the paper certificate. A MoRTH advisory, circulated by state police such as Kerala’s, treats documents in DigiLocker or mParivahan as valid originals under the Motor Vehicles Act.

The key word is issued. A document pulled from the transport database carries a digital signature that officers can trust. A screenshot, a photo in your gallery or a self-uploaded scan does not carry that weight and may be refused.

Keep the paper too

Keep the paper certificate or a printout in the glovebox or under the bike seat. If you are stopped at a checkpoint with no signal, the printed QR code can still be scanned by the officer’s device.

Which PUC app should you use?

There is no separate official PUC app for vehicle owners. The two government apps that matter are mParivahan, which shows the PUC validity date for any vehicle number, and DigiLocker, which stores the issued certificate as a legal document.

mParivahan is best for a quick check of your own or another vehicle’s PUC date. It also holds your virtual RC and licence. Our mParivahan guide covers the rest of the app’s features and how to set it up.

DigiLocker

DigiLocker is best for carrying the certificate itself. Once fetched, it stays in your locker until you remove it, even after the test date passes, so refresh it after each new test to keep the latest expiry handy.

Unofficial apps

Many private apps send PUC reminders or book centres. But no private app can issue a certificate, and you should not share your chassis number or pay a “certificate fee” in an app you do not trust.

What happens if your PUC certificate has expired?

If your PUC certificate has expired, you are driving without a document the law requires. Under section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, that can mean a fine up to Rs 10,000, up to three months in jail, or both, plus a three-month licence disqualification.

The penalty

States apply section 190(2) with their own compounding rules, so the amount asked at a checkpoint varies. Our traffic fines guide lists other offences and how to pay a challan.

Getting back on track

Get a fresh test the same day if you can. In Delhi, an expired certificate can also mean a fuel station refuses to fill up under the No PUCC, No Fuel rule.

PUC certificate for vehicles from another state

A PUC certificate from any authorised centre in India is valid across all states. Since the 2021 uniform format, the test is recorded against your registration number in the national database, so a test in Goa is just as good on the roads of Kolkata.

Quick answers about PUC certificate rules for EVs, online renewal and lost slips
Three questions owners ask most often.

Testing away from home

If your certificate is about to expire on a long trip, get tested wherever you are. The centre tests the vehicle in front of it and uploads the result against its number, whichever state issued the RC.

Moving permanently

Moving to a new state does not change PUC validity. When you re-register the vehicle there, the existing PUC stays valid until its printed expiry.

Fake PUC certificate: how to spot one

A fake PUC certificate is one issued without a real test or printed outside the online system. It may look official, but it will not match the national record when scanned.

Signs of a fake

Watch for a missing QR code, no plate photo, a handwritten reading, an expiry longer than the rules allow, or a certificate that does not appear on Parivahan. An operator who offers a certificate without the probe going into your exhaust is a clear warning.

Reporting it

Report a centre issuing fake certificates to the local RTO with the centre’s name, location and any receipt. A smoky vehicle on the road can be reported through the CPCB Sameer app with a photo.

PUC certificate questions

Do electric vehicles need a PUC certificate?

No. A battery electric car or scooter has no exhaust, so there is nothing to test. A hybrid with a petrol engine is tested like a petrol vehicle.

Can I get a PUC certificate without taking my vehicle to a centre?

No. The reading has to come from your own engine. A website that offers a certificate without a test is not genuine, and the result will not match the national record.

Is a PUC certificate from one state valid in another?

Yes. Since the 2021 uniform format, a certificate from any authorised centre in India is valid across the country for the dates printed on it.

What if I lose my PUC certificate?

Print it again from the Parivahan PUC page with your vehicle number and the last five chassis characters, or open the copy saved in DigiLocker.

Does a new BS6 bike need a PUC in the first year?

No. The first test is due one year after first registration. After that, a BS6 bike gets 12 months of validity per test.

Can a PUC centre refuse to test my vehicle?

A centre can refuse if it lacks equipment for your fuel type or if the exhaust is visibly damaged. It should not refuse a roadworthy vehicle it is equipped to test.

Why is my PUC not showing online?

Either the centre has not uploaded the result yet, or the number was typed wrongly. Ask the centre to check its upload; in some states the state system updates the central record later.

Is the PUC fee the same for petrol and diesel?

No. Diesel tests use a smoke meter and usually cost more. In Delhi a diesel test costs Rs 140, against Rs 110 for a petrol or CNG car.

Can I show the PUC on my phone to traffic police?

Yes. A copy in DigiLocker or mParivahan is treated as equal to the paper. A photo saved in your gallery may not be accepted.

What happens if my vehicle fails the PUC test?

The centre gives a rejection slip with the readings. Get the engine serviced, then return for a fresh test before your old certificate runs out.
