Bike number plate style photo: how a legal plate should look
A real bike number plate style photo of a legal Indian plate always shows the same thing: a plain aluminium HSRP with raised characters, a chromium hologram at the top left, IND in blue and a laser code. Photos of Splendor or car plates with fancy fonts, names or logos show shop plates that can draw a challan, so copy the fitting, not the style.
Key takeaways
- A legal bike number plate style photo shows only the registration number, hologram, IND and laser code.
- A Splendor number plate follows the same HSRP rules as any other bike; the model does not change the plate.
- Most stylish plate pictures online show shop plates, not HSRP, so they are not a safe guide.
- A car number plate design in India has three parts: front plate, rear plate and the windscreen fuel sticker.
- Plate colour comes from the registration type on the RC, not from the owner's taste.
- A clear plate photo for insurance or resale is shot straight on, in daylight, without flash glare.

Bike number plate style photo: what a legal plate looks like
A legal bike number plate style photo in India looks almost boring. It shows a flat aluminium plate with raised black characters on white, a small chromium hologram of the Ashoka Chakra at the top left, the letters IND in light blue under it, and a laser-etched code. There is nothing else on it.

Why every legal photo looks the same
Since 1 April 2019, makers supply each new vehicle with a High Security Registration Plate under Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules. Authorised makers press every plate to one pattern, so a Pune Splendor and a Patna Splendor look identical apart from the number.
What changes between photos
Only three things differ between genuine plates: the state and RTO code, the series letters and the four digits. Plate colour can also change, but only because the vehicle is registered for a different use.
Why do stylish plate photos online mislead riders?
Search results and reels are full of stylish plate pictures, but most of them show shop plates: acrylic or printed sheets with racing fonts, names, tiny digits or coloured borders. They get shared because they look good, not because they are legal, and copying them can lead to a roadside fine.
Where these photos come from
Many images come from accessory sellers, custom bike pages and editing apps. An app mock-up is only a picture; it has no hologram or laser code behind it.
How should a Splendor number plate look?
A legal Splendor number plate is the standard two-wheeler HSRP: a narrow front strip of 28.5 cm x 4.5 cm and a rear plate of 20 cm x 10 cm. Hero MotoCorp’s Splendor range gets no special design. The number appears in black on white for a private bike, fixed with snap-lock rivets.
Front plate on the Splendor
The front plate is a thin one-line strip. It must stay at the front position Hero provides, facing forward, so that oncoming traffic and cameras can read it.
Rear plate on the Splendor
The rear plate usually splits the number into two lines: state and RTO code on top, series and digits below. The small lamp above it must light it at night.
Splendor bike number plate: front and rear placement
The Splendor bike number plate must sit where the maker designed it, upright and fully visible. Owners often move the rear plate lower, tilt it back or tuck the front strip under the headlamp for a cleaner look. Each of those changes makes the plate harder to read and can be fined.
Common placement mistakes
The usual faults are a rear plate bent to follow the mudguard, a front strip hidden behind a crash guard, and a carrier or saree guard that blocks a corner of the rear plate.
Splendor number plate style ideas that stay legal
Legal Splendor number plate style ideas focus on the bike, not the plate. You can keep the plate spotless, fit it perfectly straight, use a slim black holder that leaves every edge clear, and pick a memorable number at registration. Tank graphics and seat covers change the look without risk.
Choosing a number you like
New owners can book a choice number through the state’s fancy number system before registration. Prices and auctions vary by state; our guide to VIP number plate price explains how the fees work.
Graphics away from the plate
Stickers belong on the fuel tank, side panels or visor. Keep them off the plate and its holder, including any strip above or below the number.

Is a Splendor number plate modified for style legal?
A Splendor number plate modified for style is not legal if the change touches the plate’s font, size, colour, text or visibility. Cutting the corners, adding a name strip, fitting a smoked cover or swapping the HSRP for a printed acrylic plate all count. Police treat these as non-standard plates.
What the fine can be
There is no special fancy plate fine. Officers commonly apply section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which allows up to ₹500 for a first offence and up to ₹1,500 for a repeat. States can set their own compounding amounts.
Fixing a modified plate
Remove the shop plate and book a fresh HSRP through your state’s official link. Paying a challan alone leaves the bike open to another one at the next check.
Splendor number plate design: what you can and cannot change
The Splendor number plate design is fixed by the plate maker, so owners cannot change the characters, colours or security marks. What you can control is the condition and fitting: keep the plate clean, flat and lit, and keep accessories clear of it. The full rule set is in our guide to bike number plate design.
Things you may change
You may clean or replace a damaged plate through the official service, adjust a crash guard that blocks the front strip, and replace a dead plate lamp bulb.
Things you may not change
You may not repaint the characters, add letters or symbols, trim the plate, cover it with film, or fix an IND sticker to a plain plate.
Which plate style matches your registration type?
The colour of the plate in any honest photo depends on how the vehicle is registered. A private bike or car shows black on white, and commercial use switches the background to yellow. Electric vehicles use green. The layout and font stay the same for every colour.
| Registration on the RC | Plate seen in a photo | Typical vehicles |
|---|---|---|
| Private | Black on white | Own bike, scooter or car |
| Commercial | Black on yellow | Bike taxi, cab, goods vehicle |
| Self-drive rental | Yellow on black | Rental bikes and cars |
| Private electric | White on green | Own e-scooter or EV car |
| Commercial electric | Yellow on green | Electric cab or delivery EV |
| Temporary | Red on yellow | New vehicle awaiting a number |
When the colour changes
The colour changes only when the registration changes, for example when a private bike is converted for commercial use and the RC is updated.
What does car number plate design India rules require?
A car number plate design in India has three parts. There is an HSRP at the front and rear, each 50 cm x 12 cm for a light motor vehicle, plus a third registration mark: a hologram sticker inside the windscreen. That sticker is light blue for petrol and CNG cars and orange for diesel cars.

The windscreen sticker
The sticker carries the registration details and is fitted with the plates. A car photo without it, on a vehicle made after April 2019, suggests something is missing.
Rear plate position on cars
The rear plate must stay in the recess or mount the car maker provides, lit by the plate lamp. Moving it onto the rear glass is a common error.
Which car number plate style is allowed?
The only car number plate style allowed is the plain HSRP for the car’s registration type. Gel plates, 3D or 4D letters, italic fonts, chrome frames printed with slogans and tinted covers are not allowed. A premium car looks best with a straight, clean plate and a well-chosen number.
What do HSRP security marks look like up close?
In a close-up photo, a genuine HSRP shows a chromium hologram of the Ashoka Chakra, IND in light blue, a laser-etched identification number, embossed characters you can feel, and a retro-reflective film with an India inscription at a 45-degree angle. Snap-lock rivets hold it in place.
Hologram and IND
The hologram is pressed into the plate at the top left, with IND below it. A flat sticker version of either mark is a clear sign of a fake.
Laser code and rivets
The laser code is a permanent number linked to your vehicle. Snap-lock rivets break when removed, so a plate fixed with screws has been tampered with.
How do you photograph your plate clearly?
A good plate photo for an insurance claim, a resale listing or a challan dispute is taken straight on, in soft light, with every character sharp. Clean the plate, stand level with it, turn off the flash and check the result by zooming in before you leave.
- Clean the plate. Wipe dust, mud and water spots off the plate and the hologram before you shoot.
- Shoot straight on. Hold the phone level with the plate, about one to two metres away, so the characters are not skewed.
- Use soft daylight. Shoot in shade or soft daylight and turn the flash off, because flash bounces off the reflective film.
- Check the frame. Zoom in on the photo and make sure every character, the hologram and the IND mark are sharp.

Photos for resale listings
Buyers want to see that the plate is a genuine HSRP and matches the RC. Many sellers show the plate in one photo and blur it in the rest.
How to check a plate photo against the RC?
Compare the number in the photo with the registration certificate character by character, then check the colour against the RC’s vehicle class. Look for the hologram and laser code. A mismatch can point to a cloned plate, so ask the seller for the original RC before paying.
Matching details
The number, colour and vehicle type should all match the RC. Our number plates hub explains how state and RTO codes are read.

Can I copy a stylish bike plate from a photo I saw online?
No. Most stylish plate photos online show shop-made plates with custom fonts or text. Only the HSRP made by your state's authorised maker is legal on the road.
Does a Splendor need a different number plate?
No. Splendor, Splendor Plus and Super Splendor all take the standard two-wheeler HSRP: a front strip and a rear rectangle in the sizes set for every bike.
Can I write my name below the Splendor plate?
Not on the plate or a strip attached to it. A name sticker on the tank or side panel is a separate matter, as long as it stays off the plate area.
What colour should my bike plate be in the photo?
A private bike shows black characters on white. Commercial bikes use black on yellow and private electric bikes white on green, as recorded on the RC.
Is a 3D or gel car number plate style legal?
No. Gel, 3D and 4D plates use non-standard finishes and lack the HSRP security features, so they are treated as non-standard plates.
What is the fine for a non-standard plate?
Officers often use the general penalty in section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, up to ₹500 for a first offence and up to ₹1,500 after that. State practice varies.
Is it safe to post a photo of my number plate on social media?
It is not illegal, but a clear plate photo can help someone clone your number. Many owners blur the plate before posting.
