Custom number plates: what Indian law allows on a vehicle plate

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 8 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

Custom number plates in the Western sense, with your name or a word of your choice, are not allowed in India. Every registered vehicle must carry a high security registration plate (HSRP) showing only the number the RTO issued, in English capitals and numerals. The legal way to personalise is to book a choice number from the RTO before the vehicle is registered.

Key takeaways

  • India has no scheme for personalised text plates; the plate shows only the registration mark.
  • A name number plate on a car or bike can attract a fine under the Motor Vehicles Act.
  • You can choose the number itself through your state's choice number scheme on Vahan.
  • Plates in Hindi or other scripts are treated as non-standard under Rule 50 of the CMVR.
  • Names belong on the body, the helmet or a house name board, never on the registration plate.

What are custom number plates in India?

Custom number plates usually means a plate with your own words, font, colour or design, the kind sold as private plates in some countries. In India the term is used loosely for three things: shop-made fancy plates, plates carrying a name, and choice numbers bought from the RTO. Only the last one is legal.

Comparison of what custom number plates in India can and cannot change on a vehicle
Only the number itself can be personalised, and only through the RTO.

Fancy shop plates

Accessory shops print acrylic plates with stylised digits, borders and logos. These look custom, but they replace the HSRP, so they are not road-legal on any vehicle, old or new.

Choice numbers

A choice number is a registration number you select, such as 0001 or 7777, in the series your RTO is issuing. It is the only personalisation the system offers, and it is explained further down this page.

No, not as personal designs. Since 1 April 2019 every new vehicle must leave the dealer with an HSRP, and the plate must show the registration mark only. Personalised text, custom fonts and decorative layouts break that rule, whatever a shop or online seller claims. Legality depends on the plate, not the vehicle’s price.

What the rule protects

The HSRP carries a chromium hologram, a laser-etched code, embossed characters and the IND mark. These features let police and cameras confirm that a plate belongs to the vehicle, which is why any custom version is treated as a problem.

Older vehicles too

Vehicles registered before April 2019 are being moved to HSRP state by state. A custom plate on an old bike is no safer than one on a new car.

What does name number plate mean?

The phrase name number plate is searched with at least three intentions, and only one of them is about a vehicle plate. Some people want their own name on a car or bike plate. Others want to find an owner’s name from a number. A third group wants a name board for a home.

Table of three meanings of a name number plate search and where to go
Most searches mean a vehicle plate, but two other meanings are common.

Name on a vehicle

This page covers the first meaning. The short answer is that a vehicle’s registration plate cannot carry a name in India, and the sections below explain why and what to do instead.

Other meanings

If you meant a house sign, or the owner behind a plate, the last two sections of this guide point you to the right page.

Can you write your name on a vehicle plate?

No. A name, surname, nickname, caste word, rank or job title on the plate, or on a strip fixed to it, is not part of the registration mark. The plate exists to identify the vehicle, so extra words count as a defect and can draw a challan during checks or drives against non-standard plates.

Names above or below the digits

Many plates sold online add a name in small letters under the number. That still changes the plate area and makes it non-standard, even if the digits themselves are correct.

Titles that look official

Words such as Police, Press, Advocate or a government post printed on a private plate cause extra trouble. They suggest authority the vehicle may not have, and officers treat them more strictly.

Which parts of a plate can you personalise legally?

Very little. You can choose the digits through the RTO, and the plate colour follows the vehicle’s use and fuel, not your taste. Everything else is fixed by the HSRP vendor: the metal, the font, the spacing, the hologram and the code. Owners only keep the plate clean, visible and lit.

Plate elementCan the owner choose it?Who decides

Series lettersNoRTO series in use
State and RTO codeNoOffice where you register
Font and sizeNoHSRP specification
ColourNo, set by vehicle typeUse and fuel of the vehicle
Names, logos, wordsNoNot allowed on the plate

Colour is not a style choice

A private vehicle gets black on white, and a private electric vehicle gets white on green. Picking a colour for looks would misstate the vehicle’s category.

Script is not a choice either

Rule 50 asks for English capital letters and Arabic numerals, so a plate in your regional script is also non-standard.

How do you get a personalised registration number?

The legal route is the choice number scheme. When you buy a new vehicle, and before the RC is issued, you can book a number open in your RTO’s current series through the fancy number section of the Vahan portal. You pay a reserve price set by your state, and popular numbers go to auction.

Steps to get a personalised registration number in India through the Vahan choice number scheme
The number becomes yours, but the plate still looks like every other HSRP.

Timing matters

The booking must happen before registration, so talk to the dealer early. Once a number is allotted to your vehicle, you cannot swap it later for a number you like more.

What it costs

Prices differ by state and by how popular the number is. Check the reserve price on your state transport portal before you book.

Can you buy a personalised plate like in the UK?

No. Some countries sell plates with chosen letters, short words or initials. India has no such scheme that we could find. Letters come from the series the RTO is issuing at the time, so you cannot order a word like your name. Digits are the only part you can pick.

Initials by luck

Sometimes a series happens to match someone’s initials, for example AK or RS. If that series is open at your RTO, a choice number in it is the closest you can get.

Imported vehicles

A car brought in from abroad must be registered in India and get an Indian HSRP. Its foreign private plate cannot be used on Indian roads.

What fine applies to a name or custom plate?

There is no single fine written for name plates. Officers usually apply the general penalty in section 177, and a plate that hides or misstates the registration can be charged under the registration rules instead. States also notify their own compounding amounts, so check the challan detail you receive.

Section usedFirst offenceRepeat offence
Section 177, general penaltyUp to ₹500Up to ₹1,500
Section 192(1), registration offences₹2,000 to ₹5,000₹5,000 to ₹10,000

Camera challans

Automatic cameras can misread a stylised or crowded plate. That can send a challan to the wrong vehicle, which is one reason cities run drives against custom plates.

Other costs

Some RTOs may hold back services such as transfer or address change until the plate matches the rules. Fixing the plate first saves a second trip.

Where can your name go instead of the plate?

You can show your name on the vehicle without touching the plate. A small name decal on the side panel, fuel tank, rear glass corner or helmet is common and causes no plate issue, as long as it does not block lights, mirrors or the driver’s view. Keep it away from the plate area.

Keep it small and clear

Large stickers across the rear glass can block the view behind, and reflective or tinted films have their own rules. A modest decal is the safe option.

Avoid caste and political words

Some police drives have targeted caste names and party slogans on vehicles, not only on plates. Even off the plate, these can draw attention at checkpoints.

Are show plates allowed off the road?

A custom plate made as a show plate or gift is fine at home, on a wall, a desk or a shop counter. The problem starts only when it is fitted to a vehicle used on a public road. Car shows on private land are a grey area, so fit the HSRP back before you leave.

Gifts and souvenirs

Plates with a child’s name or a family surname are popular gifts. Make sure the person knows it is a decoration and not something to bolt onto their bike.

How do you swap a custom plate for an HSRP?

Remove the custom plate and book a fresh HSRP for your vehicle through your state’s authorised plate booking service. You enter the registration number, chassis and engine details, pay the vendor’s charge and get the plate fitted at a dealer or fitment centre.

Common custom plate problems on Indian vehicles and how to fix each one legally
Each fix ends in the same place: a plain, vendor-made HSRP.

If the original HSRP is safe

If you kept the original plates, refit them using new snap-lock rivets from the vendor or dealer, because the old rivets cannot be reused.

Keep the receipt

Carry the booking receipt until the new plate is fitted. It shows you are fixing the problem if you are stopped in between.

Can a dealer add its name to your plate?

It happens, but it should not. Some dealers place their name or logo on a strip around or below the plate. The plate area should show only the registration mark, so ask the dealer to remove any branding at delivery. A plain frame that does not cover the hologram or code is the safer choice.

Want an owner’s name from a vehicle number?

Some people searching name number plate want the opposite: the owner’s name behind a number. Vahan shows limited, partly masked details for a registration number to protect privacy. Our guide on number owner name explains what you can see and how to search it.

Name number plate for a house or office

A name plate for a home, gate or office is a different product with no transport rules attached. You can choose the name, font, material and colour freely. For ideas on size and placement, see our house number plate guide.

Custom number plates questions

Are custom number plates legal in India?

No, not if custom means your own text, font or design. The plate must be a vendor-made HSRP showing only the RTO's registration number. Only the number can be chosen, through the choice number scheme.

Can I write my name on my car number plate?

No. A name, surname, title or caste word on or around the plate is not part of the registration mark and can be fined. Put a name decal on the body or rear glass where it does not block the view or the plate.

How can I get a number plate with my name in it?

You cannot get letters of your choice in India, because the letters come from the RTO series. You can only pick digits such as 0001 or a birth year from the series open at your RTO.

Is a Hindi number plate allowed?

No. Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules asks for English capital letters and Arabic numerals, and plates in Devanagari have been treated as violations.

What is the fine for a name plate on a bike?

Officers usually apply the general penalty in section 177, up to ₹500 for a first offence and ₹1,500 after that. States may notify their own compounding amounts, so the challan you see can differ.

Can I keep a custom plate as a souvenir?

Yes, as a wall decoration or show piece at home. It must never be fitted to a vehicle that is driven or parked on a public road.

Does a choice number change the look of the plate?

No. A choice number is embossed by the same HSRP vendor in the same style. Only the digits differ.
