By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 8 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

The Azamgarh RTO is the transport office for Azamgarh district in eastern Uttar Pradesh, and vehicles it registers carry the UP 50 code. A copy of the state's telephone directory lists an RTO, an enforcement officer and an ARTO here. Licence and vehicle work starts on Sarathi or Vahan, and the counter handles tests, inspections and original checks.

Key takeaways

  • UP 50 belongs to the Azamgarh office, and its jurisdiction is the whole of Azamgarh district.
  • Neighbouring offices use UP 54 Mau, UP 53 Gorakhpur, UP 61 Ghazipur, UP 62 Jaunpur and UP 45 Akbarpur.
  • A directory copy lists 05462-260327 for the RTO and [email protected] as its email; confirm first.
  • No verified street address was found, so use the UP transport department list or your slot receipt.

What is the Azamgarh RTO and whom does it serve?

The Azamgarh RTO is the Uttar Pradesh transport office for Azamgarh district, in the Purvanchal region east of Lucknow. It registers private and commercial vehicles under UP 50, issues learner and driving licences, renews fitness for buses and goods carriers, and handles transfers, NOCs and road tax for district residents.

Each bordering district keeps its own office number, so the plate tells them apart.

People who rely on it

Residents of the city and of tehsil towns such as Phulpur, Lalganj and Mehnagar use it, as do vehicle dealers and operators of taxis, autos and trucks. Our RTO codes hub covers offices across India.

One office for the district

The district has no second registering office listed, so the UP 50 number is the common mark on locally registered vehicles.

UP 50 RTO kahan ka hai?

UP 50 Azamgarh ka RTO code hai. RTO list mein UP 50 ke saamne office Azamgarh aur jurisdiction Azamgarh district likha hai. Iska matlab hai ki jis gaadi par UP 50 hai, uska pehla registration Azamgarh ke transport office mein hua.

Plate se kya pata chalta hai

Plate sirf registration ka office batati hai, owner ka aaj ka pata nahi. Gaadi Lucknow ya Varanasi mein bhi chal rahi ho, number UP 50 hi rahega.

Galat code se bachein

Mau ka number UP 54 aur Ballia ka UP 60 hai. Teeno jile ek hi division mein hain, par code alag hain.

Which district does the UP 50 RTO serve?

The UP 50 RTO serves Azamgarh district, which covers about 4,054 sq km and had 46.1 lakh residents in the 2011 Census. The district sits between the Ganges and the Ghaghara, and its headquarters town stands on the Tamsa (Tons) river, roughly 268 km east of Lucknow by road.

Key figures for the UP 50 area: Azamgarh district population, tehsils and total area
A single registering office covers more than four and a half million people.

The headquarters town

Azamgarh city had about 1.1 lakh people in 2011. It was founded in 1665 by Azam, son of Vikramajit, which gives the district its name.

Getting there

The city has a railway station with direct trains to Delhi and Mumbai, and Azamgarh Airport, about 9 km away, opened in March 2024.

Which tehsils and towns register vehicles under UP 50?

Azamgarh district has eight tehsils: Azamgarh, Burhanpur, Lalganj, Mehnagar, Nizamabad, Phulpur, Sagri and Martinganj, spread over 22 development blocks. A resident of any of them normally registers with the UP 50 office, because the district line, not the distance, decides the office.

Towns you will see on RC addresses

Besides the city, Nizamabad, Mubarakpur, Maharajganj and Mehnagar are the main towns. Note that this Maharajganj is a town in Azamgarh, not the separate Maharajganj district, which uses UP 56.

Living near a boundary

Villages close to the Mau or Jaunpur border still belong to whichever district their revenue records name.

What is the Azamgarh RTO office address?

We could not confirm a street address or PIN code for the Azamgarh office from any official or reliable source. The car platform we checked names the office only as “Regional Transport Officer Azamgarh”. Rather than print a guessed location, we point you to sources that name the exact office.

Where to confirm it

Open the UP transport department portal and check its office list. When you book a slot on Vahan or Sarathi, the receipt also names the office handling your file.

A note on maps

Search the full office name in map apps, not a generic “RTO near me”. User-placed pins for government offices are often wrong.

Which phone numbers and emails are listed for the RTO office Azamgarh?

A reproduction of the Uttar Pradesh transport telephone directory lists separate lines for the RTO, the RTO (Enforcement) and the ARTO (Administration) at Azamgarh, plus two NIC email addresses. The department’s own site did not load during our check, so treat these details as a starting point, not a guarantee.

Writing to the office

For a stuck file, email with your application number and the vehicle or licence number. Payment failures belong with the Parivahan helpdesk, not the district office.

Spotting fake numbers

Official addresses end in nic.in or up.gov.in. Numbers printed on agents’ cards are not official.

What are the working hours at the Azamgarh office?

One car platform gives 10 AM to 5 PM, Monday to Saturday for the UP 50 office. The transport department has not confirmed this, and the driving-test track or inspection yard may keep different hours on the same day, so the time on your booking matters more.

Plan around your slot

Your receipt states the reporting time. Arrive a little early, because staff check documents before the test or inspection begins.

Holidays

Counters close on state government holidays. Before festival weeks, check that the booking page still shows your date.

Why does Azamgarh have both an RTO and an ARTO?

Azamgarh is the headquarters of the Azamgarh division, which also includes Ballia and Mau. The directory copy lists an RTO and an enforcement RTO at Azamgarh but only ARTO posts at Mau and Ballia, which fits Azamgarh acting as the senior office for the division.

Who does what

The ARTO (Administration) usually handles the district’s registrations and licences. The RTO supervises the region, and the enforcement wing deals with roadside checks, overloading and permit violations.

What it means for you

Mau and Ballia residents still apply at their own offices. You come to Azamgarh only when your address is in Azamgarh district.

Which codes surround Azamgarh district?

Azamgarh touches six districts, and each one registers under its own number. Gorakhpur lies to the north, Mau to the east, Ghazipur to the south-east, Jaunpur to the south-west, Sultanpur to the west and Ambedkar Nagar to the north-west.

Division partner without a shared border

Ballia (UP 60) is in the same division but lies beyond Mau. Our Uttar Pradesh RTO guide lists every office in the state.

How did the creation of Mau district change things?

Mau was carved out of Azamgarh on 19 November 1988, with its headquarters at Maunath Bhanjan. Today Mau has its own office and the UP 54 code, so residents of Mau apply there. The Azamgarh division itself was formed later, on 15 November 1994.

Reading older plates

We found no source on which code Mau-area vehicles used before their office opened, so do not assume an old UP 50 vehicle comes from today’s Azamgarh district. The Vahan record shows the current registering office.

How do you read a UP 50 number plate?

An Azamgarh number has four parts: UP for the state, 50 for the office, a series of one to three letters and a running number up to 9999. In a sample such as UP 50 BK 2317, only “UP 50” refers to the place.

Series and colours

Letters I and O are not used in the series. White plates are private, yellow plates are commercial and green plates mark electric vehicles.

High security plates

Newer vehicles carry a high security registration plate with a hologram and laser code; the number itself stays the same.

Which services can you get at the RTO office Azamgarh?

The RTO office Azamgarh handles registration, ownership transfer, duplicate RC, hypothecation changes, learner and driving licences, licence renewal, fitness certificates, permits, NOCs and road tax for the district. Nearly all of these begin online, and the counter deals with the parts that need you or the vehicle present.

Vehicle-side work

Transfers, NOCs and hypothecation removal start on Vahan. Commercial vehicles also book fitness inspections there.

Licence-side work

Learner licences, driving tests and renewals start on Sarathi. The driving test is taken in person at the office.

How do you apply for an Azamgarh transport service online?

Start on the right portal, pick Uttar Pradesh and the Azamgarh office, fill in the form, upload scans and pay. Fees appear inside each service once you select it. Book a slot only when the service asks for one, then visit with your originals.

Five steps to start a service at the rto office Azamgarh through Vahan or Sarathi
Most of the work is finished before you reach the counter.
  1. Choose the portal. Use Vahan for vehicle work or Sarathi for licence work.
  2. Select the office. Pick Uttar Pradesh as the state and Azamgarh as the office.
  3. Upload and pay. Attach clear scans and pay by UPI, card or net banking.
  4. Book a slot. Choose a date when the service needs a test, inspection or verification.
  5. Visit with originals. Carry the slip, the receipt and every original document.

Keep your mobile number current

OTPs go to the number on the RC or licence. Update an old number first, or the online steps will stall.

Which papers should you carry to the counter?

Carry the original of every document you uploaded and a set of self-attested copies. Staff compare the originals with your scans, and a mismatch in name spelling, date of birth or address is the most common reason a file is sent back.

Checklist of documents to carry for a visit to the Azamgarh RTO office counters
The exact list depends on the service you booked.

For vehicle work

Bring the RC, insurance, PUC certificate, the signed form and the fee receipt. A loan closure also needs the bank’s NOC.

For licence work

Bring the learner licence, age and address proof and the slot receipt, plus a vehicle of the right class with valid papers.

Can you look up a UP 50 vehicle online?

Yes. Type the full registration number into Vahan citizen services or the mParivahan app. The result shows the registering office, vehicle class, fuel, registration date and insurance validity, with the owner’s name partly hidden. It is a sensible check before buying a used Azamgarh vehicle.

What to compare

The office should read Azamgarh. Match the model and the last characters of the chassis number with the RC.

What happens to a UP 50 number when you move?

Within Uttar Pradesh the UP 50 number stays on the vehicle; you only update the address on the RC through Vahan. If you move to another state, take an NOC from Azamgarh, clear pending challans and register the vehicle at the new state’s office.

Moving within UP

A move to Lucknow or Varanasi needs only the address change. The plate does not change.
