MH03 city name: Mumbai, and the eastern suburbs behind the code
The MH03 city name is Mumbai. More precisely, MH 03 is the code of the Mumbai East regional transport office, listed for the suburbs from Kurla to Mulund, plus Mankhurd, in Mumbai Suburban district. Its building stands at the Wadala Truck Terminal. A car with this prefix was first registered by that office, typically for an owner living along the eastern Central or Harbour line.
Key takeaways
- MH 03 means Mumbai, issued by the Mumbai East office.
- The listed belt is Kurla to Mulund and Mankhurd, all in Mumbai Suburban district.
- The office building is at Wadala Truck Terminal, but Wadala's own streets fall under MH 01.
- Thane beyond Mulund uses MH 04, and Vashi beyond Mankhurd uses MH 43.
- A plate keeps its prefix for life, so the code shows where a vehicle was first registered, not where it is now.

MH03 city name: which city does the code stand for?
The short answer to the MH03 city name question is Mumbai. The code does not cover the whole city, though. It belongs to one of Mumbai’s four transport offices, Mumbai East, and marks vehicles first registered for owners in the eastern suburbs. Seeing MH 03 on a bumper tells you the car’s paperwork began there.

Mumbai, not Maharashtra at large
MH alone only says Maharashtra. The two digits after it narrow the plate to a single issuing office, and 03 is fixed to Mumbai East. A plate from Nagpur, Nashik or Pune will never start with MH 03 when new.
Which district, exactly
The listed area sits in Mumbai Suburban district, created on 1 October 1990 when the old Mumbai district was split into city and suburban halves. The district’s three talukas are Andheri, Borivali and Kurla; MH 03 draws mainly on the Kurla side.
Mumbai East RTO code: why is this office called East?
The Mumbai East RTO code is MH 03. Maharashtra names its Mumbai offices by the part of the city they serve: Central at Tardeo, West at Andheri, North at Dahisar and East for the belt along the eastern rail corridor. The label describes the territory, which runs up the eastern edge of Salsette Island toward Thane creek.
Four offices, four codes
Mumbai’s offices carry MH 01, MH 02, MH 03 and MH 47. Only the last one breaks the sequence: the published list shows Goregaon to Dahisar stayed with the Andheri office until 2015, when the newer MH 47 office took it over.
What “East” leaves out
The eastern half of the island city, such as Byculla or Sewri, is not part of this office. Those areas belong to Mumbai Central, so “East” refers to the eastern suburbs only.
Which suburbs carry the MH03 prefix?
The published list gives Kurla to Mulund, plus Mankhurd. Read against the railway map, that is every Central line station from Kurla up to Mulund and every Harbour line station from Kurla out to Mankhurd. Areas such as Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Bhandup and Chembur therefore sit inside the MH 03 belt.
| Rail line | Stations inside the listed belt | Next stop outside |
|---|---|---|
| Central (main) | Kurla, Vidyavihar, Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Kanjur Marg, Bhandup, Nahur, Mulund | Thane (MH 04) |
| Harbour | Kurla, Tilak Nagar, Chembur, Govandi, Mankhurd | Vashi (MH 43) |
Kurla is split
The same list places parts of Kurla under Mumbai Central. If your address is near the Kurla boundary, do not assume MH 03; the portal will assign the office from your pincode.
Stations are a guide, not a rule
Office limits follow municipal wards and pincodes, not railway platforms. Use the table to orient yourself, then confirm.
Why is the office in Mumbai City but the area in the suburbs?
The MH 03 building is listed at the Wadala Truck Terminal, which lies in Mumbai City district. Its territory, however, is entirely suburban. Wadala’s homes and shops are registered by Mumbai Central, so a resident of Wadala gets MH 01, even though the MH 03 counters are close by.

A short hop from the belt
Wadala borders the southern end of the eastern suburbs, so the office is a short road trip for most residents of the belt even though it lies outside their district.
Do not go by the building
When you work out which code a new vehicle will get, start from the owner’s address, never from the nearest office building.
Which Mumbai areas use a different code?
Everything west of the Central line and south of Kurla uses another office. Bandra to Jogeshwari belongs to MH 02 at Andheri, Goregaon to Dahisar to MH 47, and the island city from Colaba to Mahim and Sion to MH 01. Outside the city limits, Thane and Navi Mumbai each have their own codes.
Western suburbs
Andheri, Santacruz and Bandra cars usually show MH 02, while Malad, Kandivali and Borivali cars registered recently show MH 47.
Across the creeks
Vashi, Nerul and Airoli use MH 43 Navi Mumbai. Thane city, Bhiwandi and Shahapur use MH 04.
Is MH 3 the same as MH03?
Yes. People write it as MH 3, MH03 or MH-03, but on a plate and in the Vahan database the office number always takes two digits, so it is 03. Searches with or without the space usually work; if one fails, enter the number as printed on the RC, without spaces.
Leading zeros matter on forms
Some insurance or parking forms reject “MH3”. Type the zero to match the RC exactly.
How do you read an MH03 registration number?
A number such as MH 03 AB 1234 splits into state, office, series and serial. MH is Maharashtra, 03 is Mumbai East, the letters show the series the office was issuing at the time, and the four digits are the vehicle’s own number within that series.
What the series letters hint at
Offices move through series in order, so a later letter pair generally means a more recent registration. It is only a rough clue; the registration date in the record is the real answer.
Choice numbers keep the prefix
A fancy number booked on the Parivahan service still carries MH 03 when the owner’s address is in the Mumbai East area.
Where is the MH03 office and how do you contact it?
The office is listed at the Wadala Truck Terminal. We do not repeat street-level contacts here because they come from secondary directories we could not confirm on the state site. Our guide to RTO Mumbai East collects the listed address, desks and phone details with that caveat.
Confirm before you travel
Check the Maharashtra transport department’s office list for current details, and start any service online first so the visit is short.
How do you check an MH03 vehicle online?
Enter the full number in the Vahan know-your-vehicle search or the mParivahan app. The result shows the model, fuel, registration date and the registering authority, which for a genuine MH 03 plate should be Mumbai East. Owner details are masked. Our page on finding a vehicle’s name and details walks through the search.

- Note the full number. Write down the complete registration, MH 03 followed by the series letters and four digits.
- Open Vahan or mParivahan. Use the know-your-vehicle search on the Vahan site or the mParivahan app.
- Read the registering office. Check that the registering authority shown for the number is the Mumbai East office.
- Match the papers. Compare the model, chassis and engine details with the RC and the vehicle itself.
When the office does not match
If an MH 03 plate shows a different registering office, treat it as a red flag in a used-car purchase and ask the seller for the RC before paying anything.
Does the plate change if you move out of Mumbai East?
Not inside Maharashtra. A family moving from Mulund to Pune keeps the MH 03 number and updates the address on the RC through Vahan. Section 49 of the Motor Vehicles Act asks owners to report the change of address within 30 days.
Moving to another state
Section 47 requires a new registration mark once a vehicle stays in another state for more than 12 months. You start with a no-objection certificate from the Mumbai East office.
Selling to a buyer elsewhere
On a sale, ownership transfer happens through Vahan; the buyer keeps the MH 03 number even if they live in Nashik.
Which codes border the MH03 area?
Two boundaries matter most. North of Mulund the city ends and Thane district begins, served by MH 04. East of Mankhurd the Harbour line crosses Thane creek to Vashi in Navi Mumbai, served by MH 43. To the south and west, MH 01 and MH 02 take over within Mumbai itself.

Mulund and Thane
Mulund and Thane share a long border, so neighbours on either side can hold different prefixes. Pincode decides.
Mankhurd and Vashi
Mankhurd is the last Harbour line stop in Mumbai; Vashi beyond the bridge is outside the city and outside MH 03.
Common mix-ups with MH03 plates
The most frequent confusion is assuming a Wadala resident gets MH 03, which the listing does not support. Another is reading MH 03 as proof of where the car is today. The code is a birth record of the registration, nothing more, and many MH 03 cars now run in Pune, Nashik or Goa.
Reading MH 30 or MH 33 as MH 03
MH 30 and MH 33 are other Maharashtra offices entirely. Look closely at the zero.
Expecting the code to change after a sale
A new owner does not get a new prefix. Only the ownership record and, where needed, the address change.
