MH04 city name: Thane and the office behind the code

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 7 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

The MH04 city name is Thane. MH 04 is the code of the Thane RTO, which the published Maharashtra list places near Central Jail, Thane. It registers vehicles for the Thane, Bhiwandi and Shahapur talukas. Navi Mumbai, Kalyan and Mira-Bhayandar sit in the same district but have their own codes, and until 2014 MH 04 also served today's Palghar district.

Key takeaways

  • MH 04 is Thane, issued by the Thane regional transport office.
  • The listed area is Thane, Bhiwandi and Shahapur talukas, not the whole district.
  • Kalyan (MH 05), Navi Mumbai (MH 43) and Mira-Bhayandar (MH 58) carry different codes despite being in Thane district.
  • The office is listed near Central Jail; we could not confirm a Louis Wadi address or a move to a new building.
  • Older cars in Vasai or Palghar may show MH 04 because Palghar split off in 2014.

MH04 city name: which city is on the plate?

The MH04 city name is Thane, the lake city across the creek from Mumbai’s eastern suburbs. MH stands for Maharashtra and 04 for the Thane regional transport office. A vehicle wearing this prefix was first registered there, usually for an owner living in Thane city, Bhiwandi or the Shahapur hills.

A district headquarters code

Thane city is the headquarters of Thane district, and the office here got one of the earliest serial numbers in the state. Only Mumbai’s first three offices come before it in the sequence.

What the digits do not tell you

The prefix records where the paperwork began. It says nothing about where the car is parked today; the Vahan record holds the current owner’s address, which is masked in public searches.

Which talukas does the Thane RTO serve?

The published list gives the Thane office three talukas: Thane, Bhiwandi and Shahapur. That is a long, narrow stretch running from the city’s lakes and Ghodbunder Road north-east through the Bhiwandi warehouse belt to the forested Shahapur area at the foot of the Kasara ghat.

Bhiwandi’s trucks and tempos

Bhiwandi is one of the country’s busiest warehousing hubs, so many goods vehicles in the region are registered in this office. That explains why so many MH 04 trucks turn up on highways far from Thane.

Shahapur on the eastern edge

Shahapur taluka is largely rural. Owners there still register under MH 04, even though Kalyan is closer for some villages.

Which parts of Thane district use other codes?

Thane district has seven talukas and six municipal corporations, but only part of it belongs to MH 04. Kalyan, Navi Mumbai and Mira-Bhayandar each have their own office, so two neighbours in the same district can carry different prefixes. Use the table to see which code an area is listed under.

Thane taluka is split three ways

Airoli and Mira Road are inside Thane taluka on paper, yet both have their own offices. Taluka alone is not enough; the portal assigns the office from your pincode.

Kalyan next door

The Kalyan RTO, MH 05, handles the towns along the Central line beyond Diva, which many people wrongly assume are part of Thane’s area.

How did the 2014 Palghar split change MH 04?

Until 2014, Thane district stretched north to the Gujarat border, and the published list notes that this office also covered present-day Palghar district. Palghar became a separate district on 1 August 2014, and the Vasai office (MH 48) now serves that area. Thane’s own territory shrank to what it is today.

Old plates in Vasai and Palghar

A car registered at Thane before the split keeps MH 04 for life. Seeing it in Nala Sopara or Dahanu is normal, not a sign of a fake plate.

Re-registration is not needed

Owners in Palghar do not have to swap MH 04 for MH 48. They only update the address on the RC if they have moved.

What is the MH 04 RTO address?

The MH 04 RTO address in the published Maharashtra list is simply near Central Jail, Thane. We could not open the state transport department’s own office list from our side, and the insurer directories we tried were either blocked or gave only the same landmark, so we print no street number, PIN, phone or email.

Where to get the full address

The Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Department site keeps the official office list with contacts. The Parivahan portal also shows the office name when you pick it during an online application.

Use the receipt

After you apply online, the acknowledgement names the office handling your file. Go to that office, not one picked from a map.

RTO Thane Louis Wadi, Thane West, Thane, Maharashtra: is the office there?

Many people search for an RTO at Louis Wadi in Thane West. Louis Wadi is a locality in Thane West, but no source we could check places the Thane RTO there. The list we rely on says near Central Jail. Some directories also name a second Thane West location; we could not open them to confirm it.

Do's and don'ts for confirming the MH 04 RTO address in Thane before a visit
Search results disagree on the location, so confirm before you travel.

Why the name keeps appearing

Map listings and old visiting cards often carry outdated or unofficial pins. A search phrase can spread long after an office has changed, or even if it never existed.

What to do with a Louis Wadi address

Treat it as unconfirmed. Call the number on the official state office list or check your application receipt before you set out.

Old RTO Thane: what people mean by it

The phrase old RTO Thane suggests that the office once sat somewhere else. We found no dated record of a move, so we cannot say where an earlier building was. People may simply mean the long-standing office near Central Jail, as opposed to a newer branch they have heard of.

Landmarks outlive offices

Auto drivers in Thane still give directions by old landmarks. If someone says “old RTO”, ask which road they mean and match it to the official list.

New RTO office Thane: has the office moved?

We could not confirm a new RTO office in Thane in any source we were able to read. If a relocation happens, the Maharashtra transport department updates its office list, and the Vahan and Sarathi portals start showing the new address on receipts. Until then, rely on the listed location.

How you would find out

A change usually shows first in the appointment slip issued by Sarathi or Vahan. Read the address there every time you book.

Which services does the Thane office handle?

The Thane office handles the usual RTO work for its three talukas: new vehicle registration, transfer of ownership, address change on the RC, hypothecation entries, duplicate RCs, learner and driving licences, and fitness for transport vehicles. Most of these start online and finish with a short counter visit or test.

Licence work goes through Sarathi

Learner, permanent and renewal applications are filed on the Sarathi portal, which then sends you to Thane for the test or document check.

Vehicle work goes through Vahan

Ownership transfer, NOC and RC requests are filed on Vahan. The dealer usually handles registration of a new car.

How should you prepare for a Thane RTO visit?

Finish everything you can online first. The counter at Thane mainly checks original papers and conducts tests, so arriving with printouts, receipts and copies saves a second trip.

  1. Confirm your area. Check that the address on your proof lies in Thane, Bhiwandi or Shahapur taluka.
  2. Start online. Submit the application on Vahan for vehicle work or Sarathi for licence work.
  3. Pay and book. Pay the fee through the portal and book a slot where the service offers one.
  4. Take originals. Carry the printouts, original documents and self-attested copies to the office.

Most of the work is done on the portals; the counter checks papers.

Keep a soft copy

Save the application number on your phone. Staff ask for it first.

When is the Thane RTO open?

We found no published counter timings for this office. Maharashtra moved its government offices to a five-day week from 29 February 2020, with official hours of 9.45 am to 6.15 pm, so plan for a weekday visit. Counter and test hours can be shorter than office hours.

Holidays and second thoughts

Public holidays close the office. If your slot falls on one, reschedule on the portal rather than turning up.

How do you read an MH 04 number plate?

A number such as MH 04 AB 1234 has four parts: MH for Maharashtra, 04 for Thane, a letter series and a four-digit serial. Writing MH 4 or MH-04 means the same thing, but forms and searches expect the two-digit 04.

Series letters as a rough clue

A later letter pair usually means a more recent registration, but only the registration date in Vahan settles it.

How can you check an MH 04 vehicle online?

Type the full number into the Vahan know-your-vehicle search or the mParivahan app. The result shows the model, fuel, registration date and the registering authority, which should read Thane for an MH 04 plate. Our guide to finding a vehicle’s name and details explains the search step by step.

If the office does not match

When an MH 04 plate shows another registering office, ask the seller for the original RC before paying for a used car.

What happens when you move into or out of the Thane area?

The plate stays the same. Under Section 49 of the Motor Vehicles Act, the owner reports a change of address within 30 days, and the RC is updated. A vehicle kept in another state for more than 12 months needs a new registration mark there under Section 47.

Moving within Maharashtra

A move from Thane to Pune only changes the address on the RC. The car keeps MH 04.

Moving to another state

Get an NOC from the Thane office through Vahan, then register in the new state.
