MP 50 RTO code: which district does it belong to?

The MP 50 RTO code stands for Balaghat, a forested district on Madhya Pradesh’s border with Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh. A new car, tractor or two-wheeler registered at the Balaghat transport office gets MP 50 as its first block after the state letters, wherever in the district the owner lives.

Eight codes people often look up, each tied to one district office.

Balaghat at a glance

Balaghat district spreads over about 9,229 sq km and counted 1,701,698 residents in the 2011 Census. It is part of the Jabalpur division and the wider Mahakaushal belt, so its plates are common on roads towards Gondia, Seoni and Mandla.

Why this page lists several codes

People rarely search one number alone. A buyer checking a used vehicle, or a driver who spots a plate on the highway, often looks up three or four MP numbers together, so this guide answers the most searched ones in one place.

Which towns of Balaghat register under MP 50?

Balaghat has ten tehsils, and all of them sit under one code. A two-wheeler bought in Waraseoni and a pickup registered by a Lanji farmer both read MP 50, because the code follows the district, not the town.

From Lanji in the east to Katangi in the west, the district number stays 50.

Tehsils in the list

The district tehsils are Balaghat, Baihar, Birsa, Katangi, Khairlanji, Kirnapur, Lalbarra, Lanji, Paraswada and Waraseoni. None of them has a separate number in the list we checked.

Plates seen outside the district

Balaghat vehicles cross into Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh every day. The plate keeps MP 50 after a move inside the state; only the address on the RC changes.

MP 47 RTO code: is it Harda?

Yes. The MP 47 RTO code is issued by the Harda district office in the Narmadapuram division. Harda is a small farming district on the south bank of the Narmada, between Narmadapuram and Khandwa, and every vehicle class registered there gets the same prefix.

Harda’s tehsils under MP 47

The six tehsils are Harda, Handia, Timarni, Rahatgaon, Khirkiya and Sirali. Each one registers through the Harda office and gets the same MP 47 prefix.

Size of the district

Harda covers roughly 3,339 sq km, with 570,465 people in 2011, which makes it one of the smaller districts in the state by population.

MP 05 RTO code: Narmadapuram or Hoshangabad?

The MP 05 RTO code belongs to Narmadapuram, the district long known as Hoshangabad. The main list we used has a damaged row for MP 05, so this mapping comes from a secondary directory; confirm any particular plate on Vahan before relying on it.

Towns that carry MP 05

Narmadapuram district has eight tehsils: Narmadapuram, Itarsi, Doleria, Seoni Malwa, Makhan Nagar, Sohagpur, Pipariya and Bankhedi. Itarsi, the railway junction town, is the busiest of these after the headquarters.

The old name on older papers

An RC printed before the rename may still say Hoshangabad. The number does not change and the vehicle does not need re-registration because of the new name.

MP 38 RTO code: which office in Raisen?

The MP 38 RTO code is the Raisen district number. Raisen lies just east of Bhopal in the Bhopal division and is home to the Sanchi stupas, so MP 38 plates are a regular sight on the Bhopal–Vidisha road.

Raisen tehsils

Nine tehsils share the code: Raisen, Goharganj, Begamganj, Gairatganj, Silwani, Bareli, Badi, Udaipura and Sultanpur.

MP 38 next to MP 04

Because Raisen borders the capital, people sometimes assume MP 38 is a Bhopal series. It is not; Bhopal uses MP 04, and Raisen keeps its own office and number.

MP 54 RTO code: where is Umaria?

The MP 54 RTO code is for Umaria district in the Shahdol division, in the north-east of the state. Umaria is best known for Bandhavgarh National Park, so tourist taxis and safari jeeps there often carry MP 54 plates.

Umaria’s seven tehsils

The tehsils are Umaria, Bandhavgarh, Manpur, Pali, Chandia, Nowrozabad and Karkeli. All register at the Umaria office.

Neighbouring Shahdol codes

Umaria sits in a division with Shahdol (MP 18) and Anuppur (MP 65), so these three numbers often appear together on the same roads.

MP 16 RTO code: is it Chhatarpur?

Yes. The MP 16 RTO code belongs to Chhatarpur in the Bundelkhand region and the Sagar division. The district includes Khajuraho’s tehsil area, so visitors heading to the temples often see local MP 16 autos and taxis.

Chhatarpur tehsils

Eleven tehsils use the code: Chhatarpur, Bada Malhera, Bijawar, Buxwaha, Chandla, Gaurihar, Ghuwara, Laundi, Maharajpur, Nowgong and Rajnagar.

Bundelkhand neighbours

Close by are Tikamgarh (MP 36), Panna (MP 35) and Sagar (MP 15). Uttar Pradesh plates from across the border are also common in Chhatarpur.

MP 04 kaha ka number hai?

Seedha jawab: MP 04 Bhopal ka number hai. It is the district series issued at the Bhopal office for ordinary private and commercial vehicles registered in Bhopal district, the state capital.

MP 01 to MP 03 are different

The list we checked shows MP 01, MP 02 and MP 03 as statewide series issued at Bhopal for the Governor, the state government and the police. Normal buyers in Bhopal get MP 04.

Bhopal district in numbers

Bhopal district is compact at about 2,772 sq km but had 2,371,061 people in 2011, which helps explain how many MP 04 plates you see on the road.

MP 29 RTO code: is it still in use?

The MP 29 RTO code does not appear in the current Madhya Pradesh list we checked. The numbering jumps from MP 28 (Chhindwara) to MP 30 (Bhind). We found no reliable source naming a district for MP 29 today, so we will not guess one.

What an MP 29 plate might mean

At least one nearby number, MP 25 for Jagdalpur, belonged to an area that became Chhattisgarh in 2000. Whether MP 29 had a similar history is not stated in the sources we used, so treat any claim online with care.

How to settle it for one vehicle

Search the full registration number on Vahan. The registering authority field shows the actual office, which is the only dependable answer for an unusual code.

Where does MP 09 fit beside these codes?

MP 09 is Indore district, the largest city in the state and the head of the Indore division. It is far west of Balaghat or Umaria, but it is often searched alongside them. Office services, documents and visit tips for Indore are on our MP 09 RTO page.

Indore district size

Indore district covers about 3,898 sq km and had 3,276,697 people in 2011, the highest population of any district in Madhya Pradesh.

Which division does each of these codes sit in?

Madhya Pradesh groups its 55 districts into 10 revenue divisions. The eight codes on this page fall into six of them, which is a handy way to remember where a plate comes from.

Table matching eight MP RTO codes to their district and revenue division
Raisen sits next to Bhopal, and Harda shares a division with Narmadapuram.

Pairs that share a division

Bhopal (MP 04) and Raisen (MP 38) share the Bhopal division. Narmadapuram (MP 05) and Harda (MP 47) share the Narmadapuram division, together with Betul (MP 48).

Codes on their own

Balaghat is in Jabalpur division, Umaria in Shahdol, Chhatarpur in Sagar and Indore in its own division. For every other number, see the full RTO codes list.

How do these MP codes appear on a plate?

A typical plate reads MP 50 AB 1234. MP is the state, 50 is the district office, AB is the series and 1234 is the running number. Only the first two blocks tell you anything about place; the series letters are handed out in order.

Zero in front of single digits

Codes below ten are written with a leading zero, so Bhopal is MP 04 and Narmadapuram is MP 05. Searching “MP 4” usually works, but the plate itself shows the zero.

Colour of the plate

White plates are private, yellow plates commercial and green plates electric. The colour tells you the use; the code still tells you the district.

How do you check which office issued a plate online?

The surest test is the national vehicle search. Enter the full number and read the registering authority; it names the office even when a code is rare or the district has been split. Madhya Pradesh also runs its own portal, explained in our MP transport guide.

Four steps to check which Madhya Pradesh transport office issued a registration number online
The authority field settles any doubt about an old or reassigned code.
  1. Note the full number. Write down every block of the plate, for example MP 50 AB 1234.
  2. Open the vehicle search. Go to Vahan citizen services or the mParivahan app and pick the registration search.
  3. Enter and submit. Type the number without spaces, fill the captcha and submit.
  4. Read the authority field. The registering authority shown names the office, such as Balaghat or Harda.

What should the registering authority field show?

For a Balaghat car it should name the Balaghat office; for MP 47 it should name Harda. A different office usually means the vehicle was first registered elsewhere and later transferred.
