MP 41 RTO code: what the Dewas prefix means and where it applies

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 7 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

The MP 41 RTO code is issued by the transport office at Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, and covers all of Dewas district. Vehicles first registered by residents of Dewas town, Sonkatch, Bagli, Kannod, Khategaon, Satwas, Hatpipliya, Tonk Khurd or Udainagar carry it. Registrations, licences and transfers begin on Vahan or Sarathi; the office is visited for tests and inspections.

Key takeaways

  • MP 41 = Dewas, and the code covers the whole district, not only the town.
  • All nine tehsils of Dewas district share the one prefix; none has a code of its own.
  • Bordering districts carry different numbers: Indore MP 09, Ujjain MP 13, Shajapur MP 42, Sehore MP 37, Harda MP 47, Khandwa MP 12 and Khargone MP 10.
  • Dewas belongs to Ujjain division, alongside Ujjain, Mandsaur, Ratlam, Neemuch, Shajapur and Agar Malwa.
  • We print no office address or phone number because no source we checked confirmed one; use the MP transport department site.

What is the MP 41 RTO code?

The MP 41 RTO code identifies the transport office of Dewas district, a district in western Madhya Pradesh bordered by Indore and Ujjain. Any car, scooter, tractor or goods carrier first registered to a Dewas district address gets this prefix, and the Vahan record lists Dewas as its registering authority.

Indore, Ujjain, Shajapur, Sehore and Harda each keep a number of their own.

Where 41 sits in the state sequence

Madhya Pradesh keeps MP 01 to MP 03 as statewide series issued at Bhopal, then numbers its district offices from MP 04. Dewas falls at 41, between Vidisha (MP 40) and Shajapur (MP 42).

One office, one district

The national list of transport office districts shows Dewas as the office location and Dewas district as the jurisdiction. No second code for the district appears in it.

MP41 city name: which place does it stand for?

People searching the MP41 city name usually want the town, and the answer is Dewas, the district headquarters. Strictly, though, the code belongs to the district, so a plate reading MP 41 may equally come from a village near Kannod or a farm outside Bagli.

Town versus district

Dewas town hosts the office, but the prefix tells you only the district of first registration. It cannot tell you which tehsil the owner lives in.

Why the confusion arises

Most Indian codes are named after the office’s town, so searchers treat them as city codes. For MP 41, read “Dewas” as shorthand for the entire district.

Which tehsils does the Dewas RTO cover?

The Dewas RTO serves all of Dewas district, roughly 7,020 sq km with 1,563,715 residents at the 2011 Census. Its nine tehsils are Dewas, Sonkatch, Tonk Khurd, Hatpipliya, Bagli, Udainagar, Kannod, Satwas and Khategaon, and every one of them registers under the same prefix.

From Sonkatch to Khategaon, every tehsil registers under the same prefix.

The northern tehsils

Sonkatch and Tonk Khurd face Shajapur and Ujjain. Residents here still choose Dewas when they apply online, even if a neighbouring district’s town feels closer.

The southern tehsils

Bagli, Udainagar, Kannod, Satwas and Khategaon run towards Khandwa, Harda and Sehore. Nemawar is also listed among the district’s towns. The address on your proof document decides the office, not distance.

How do you read an MP 41 number plate?

On a plate such as MP 41 EF 2468, “MP” is the state, “41” is Dewas, “EF” is a letter series and “2468” is the serial. Each series holds numbers from 0001 to 9999 before the office moves to the next pair of letters.

What the letters do not tell you

The series is allotted in order as numbers run out. It does not mark Khategaon or Sonkatch, so two neighbours buying a month apart may get different letters.

Colour and HSRP

Private vehicles use white plates and commercial ones yellow plates. Vehicles built on or after 1 April 2019 come with a high security registration plate fitted by the dealer.

Which codes do the districts around Dewas use?

Seven districts touch Dewas, and each registers its own vehicles. Vehicles from these offices cross into Dewas daily, so their plates are a familiar sight on its roads.

Indore plates in Dewas

Indore lies on the western border, so MP 09 vehicles turn up often in Dewas. The prefix only records where each was registered first.

Ujjain next door

Ujjain borders Dewas to the north. Our MP 13 RTO code guide explains that office and its tehsils.

Which codes share the Ujjain division with Dewas?

Dewas is one of seven districts in Ujjain division: Ujjain, Mandsaur, Neemuch, Ratlam, Shajapur, Agar Malwa and Dewas. The division is a revenue grouping; it does not issue plates, so each district keeps its own number.

Agar Malwa, the newest district here, sits far up the list at MP 70.

The odd one out

Agar Malwa, the newest district in the group, uses MP 70, far from the older division codes in the 13 to 44 range. Vehicles registered before the split keep their earlier numbers.

Where is the Dewas RTO office and how do you contact it?

The office is in Dewas town, but no source we could check confirmed its current street address, phone number, email or timings. Rather than copy an unverified listing, we leave those details out.

Official places to look

The MP transport department website carries its office list, and the Parivahan portal has an RTO directory. Both are maintained by government teams.

Your receipt is the best guide

A Vahan or Sarathi appointment slip names the office, date and service. Carry it on the day and follow what it says.

What work does the Dewas RTO handle?

The Dewas RTO deals with the full range of district transport work: first registration, licences, ownership transfers, address updates, NOCs, permits and fitness checks for transport vehicles. Almost all of it is applied for online, with the counter kept for steps that need you, the vehicle or originals.

About fees

The portal calculates the charge for your service and vehicle class when you reach payment. We do not list amounts; pay the figure shown on screen.

How is a new vehicle registered with the Dewas RTO code?

When a Dewas district resident buys a vehicle, the dealer files the registration on Vahan, collects road tax and charges, and the Dewas RTO code is allotted. The RC is then issued without a separate counter visit in most cases.

What to hand the dealer

Bring identity proof, an address proof inside Dewas district, a photo, a working mobile number and the insurance cover note. A financed purchase adds the lender as hypothecation.

Buying in Indore

A showroom in Indore can still register you under MP 41 if you give your Dewas address. Give an Indore address and the vehicle gets MP 09 instead.

How do you get a driving licence in Dewas district?

Dewas residents apply through Sarathi, which Madhya Pradesh runs with MPOnline. The path is a learner’s licence first, then a driving test at the Dewas office after the waiting period the portal shows.

Learner’s licence

Complete the form, upload papers, pay online and take the learner’s test offered. Note the validity date so your driving test is booked in time.

Driving test

Carry the learner’s licence, slot receipt and a road-worthy vehicle of the right class with its papers. Results appear on Sarathi.

How can you check an MP 41 vehicle online?

Vahan’s vehicle search and the mParivahan app show the public record for any MP 41 registration, including office, class, fuel, registration date and insurance validity, with the owner’s name partly hidden.

  1. Open a vehicle search. Use Vahan’s Know Your Vehicle Details page or the mParivahan app.
  2. Enter the registration. Type the full MP 41 number without spaces and solve the captcha.
  3. Check the office name. The record should show Dewas as the registering authority.
  4. Match the RC. Compare class, fuel, registration date and insurance with the paper RC.

Red flags for used buyers

If the office or vehicle class differs from the RC, stop and ask the seller to explain before any money moves.

What happens when an MP 41 vehicle is sold or moved?

A sale or a move within Madhya Pradesh leaves the MP 41 number untouched. Moving to another state is different: under Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, a vehicle kept there beyond 12 months must be re-registered.

Selling inside the district

The seller files notice on Form 29, both sign Form 30, and the buyer submits the transfer on Vahan. The number stays with the vehicle.

Leaving Madhya Pradesh

Apply for an NOC on Vahan, settle any dues, then register with the transport office in your new state.

Which slips cause repeat visits to the Dewas office?

Most second trips trace back to a few avoidable errors: selecting the Indore or Ujjain office online, an inactive mobile number on the RC, trusting an address from a listing site, or arriving without originals.

Common mistakes before an MP41 Dewas RTO visit and the fix for each one
A short check at home spares most applicants a repeat journey.

A two-minute check

Confirm the office named on your slip, pack originals and one set of copies, and make sure your registered mobile can receive an OTP.

If you are turned away

Ask exactly what is missing, write it on the slip and rebook online instead of waiting for an unplanned slot.

MP 41 RTO code questions

MP 41 is which district?

MP 41 is Dewas district in western Madhya Pradesh. The office sits in Dewas town and registers vehicles from every tehsil of the district.

Do Sonkatch or Khategaon have separate RTO codes?

No source we checked lists one. Both are tehsils of Dewas district, so vehicles registered there receive MP 41.

Is an MP 09 car the same as an MP 41 car?

No. MP 09 is Indore, the neighbouring district to the west. The prefix shows where the vehicle was first registered, not where it is driven.

What is the Dewas RTO address and phone number?

We could not confirm either from a reliable source, so we have not printed them. Check the MP transport department office list or the Parivahan RTO directory.

Can I apply for a Dewas driving licence online?

Yes. Learner's licence forms, fees and driving test slots go through Sarathi for Madhya Pradesh; the Dewas office is visited for the test itself.

Does my MP 41 number change if I move to Indore?

No. Within Madhya Pradesh the registration stays the same; you update the address on the RC through Vahan.
