The RJ 02 RTO code pairs the state letters RJ for Rajasthan with 02 for the Alwar office. The number comes from the old alphabetical list of districts, where Alwar followed Ajmer (RJ 01). On a plate it marks the office of first registration, which stays the same after the vehicle is sold.

According to Wikipedia, Alwar district now has 12 tehsils: Alwar, Govindgarh, Kathumar, Lachhmangarh, Rajgarh, Pratapgarh, Tehla, Ramgarh, Thanagazi, Reni, Malakhera and Naugawan. No other office code is listed for Alwar district, so vehicles from these areas normally receive RJ 02.

How did the 2023 district split change Alwar plates?
On 4 August 2023 Khairthal-Tijara district was carved out of Alwar, and on 7 August 2023 Kotputli-Behror was formed from parts of Alwar and Jaipur. When Rajasthan dissolved nine new districts on 28 December 2024, both of these were kept, so the smaller Alwar district remains.
What moved out
Tijara, Kishangarh Bas, Khairthal and Mundawar went to Khairthal-Tijara; Behror, Bansur and Neemrana went to Kotputli-Behror.
What this means for owners
Existing numbers did not change. Later services go to the office shown in Vahan, and new registrations follow your current address.
Which nearby codes get confused with RJ 02?
Several codes around Alwar look local but belong to other offices. Bhiwadi (RJ 40) serves Khairthal-Tijara, Kotputli (RJ 32) serves Kotputli-Behror, Dausa (RJ 29) lies south, Bharatpur (RJ 05) east and Jaipur (RJ 14) west. Haryana plates from Nuh and Rewari also cross daily.

How do you book an Alwar RTO appointment?
There is no separate Alwar booking site. You use the Parivahan portal: choose the service, select Rajasthan and the Alwar office, upload documents, pay and then pick a slot if the service needs a visit.
- Open Vahan or Sarathi. Use Vahan for vehicle work and Sarathi for licence work on Parivahan.
- Pick Rajasthan, then Alwar. Choose the Alwar office only when your address proof lies in Alwar district.
- Upload and pay. Attach clear scans, pay the fee online and save the receipt.
- Choose a date. Book a slot only where the service needs a visit.
- Attend with originals. Carry the slip, originals and, if listed, the vehicle.
OTP problems
One-time passwords go to the mobile number saved on the RC or licence. Update a lost number before starting.
Moving a slot
Reschedule on the same portal. A missed slot without rescheduling usually means booking afresh.
What should you take to the Alwar office?
Bring every original you uploaded, self-attested copies, the appointment slip and the fee receipt. Counter staff match each original to its scan. A spelling or date mismatch between Aadhaar, the RC and the form is a common reason for a file being returned.

When must you visit the Alwar counter in person?

Enter the full registration number in the Vahan citizen search or the mParivahan app. A genuine RJ 02 record names the Alwar office and shows the model, fuel, registration date and the validity of insurance and fitness. The owner’s name appears partly masked.

Compare the screen with the RC and the chassis number. Ask the seller to clear any pending challan or loan entry first, as either can block the transfer.
Are old RJA and RSA Alwar series still on record?
Before 1989 Alwar issued the series RJA, RSA, RRA, RNA and RPD, and its taxis used RST 1 to 500. Many of these records were moved into Vahan, but some remain only in the office register. If an old number does not show online, the Alwar office holds the paper file.
