The rto office Ranchi is the District Transport Office (DTO) for Ranchi district in Jharkhand, and vehicles it registers carry the code JH 01. Its area takes in the capital and all 18 blocks of the Ranchi Sadar and Bundu subdivisions. What is the RTO office Ranchi?
The RTO office Ranchi is the government office that registers vehicles and issues licences for people living in Ranchi district. In Jharkhand it is officially a District Transport Office, so signboards and portal lists usually say DTO Ranchi. Every vehicle it registers starts with JH 01, the first code in the state’s list.

A capital-city workload
Ranchi district had 29.14 lakh people at the 2011 Census, and the city alone passed ten lakh. That makes this office one of the busiest in Jharkhand for new bikes, cars and licences.
Where it sits in the state
Ranchi is the seat of the South Chotanagpur division, which also holds Gumla, Khunti, Lohardaga and Simdega. Our RTO codes hub lists offices across India.
Is DTO Ranchi the same as an RTO?
For everyday work, yes. DTO Ranchi performs the tasks that other states give to an RTO: registering vehicles, transferring ownership, issuing licences, approving fitness and handling permits. Jharkhand simply organises its transport offices district by district, so “RTO Ranchi” and “DTO Ranchi” lead to the same counters.
The officer in charge
A District Transport Officer runs the office under the state transport department. Records are kept on the national NIC systems, Vahan and Sarathi.
Regional permits
Bus, taxi and goods-carrier permits can involve a regional or state transport authority as well. The permit page on the portal names the body that decides.
What area does the district transport office Ranchi cover?
The district transport office Ranchi covers all of Ranchi district, about 5,097 sq km of plateau country. The district has two subdivisions, Ranchi Sadar and Bundu, with 18 blocks between them. No other JH code is listed for any part of it.
Ranchi Sadar blocks
The larger subdivision holds Kanke, Ratu, Namkum, Nagri, Ormanjhi, Angara, Silli, Khelari, Mandar, Chanho, Bero, Itki, Burmu and Lapung. Most of the city’s suburbs fall here.
Bundu subdivision blocks
The south-eastern subdivision holds Bundu, Tamar, Rahe and Sonahatu. These blocks lie towards the Seraikela border, so allow extra travel time when you book a slot in town.
What is the JH01 RTO code?
The JH01 RTO code is the registration mark of the Ranchi office. JH stands for Jharkhand and 01 for Ranchi district. It shows where a vehicle was first registered; it does not prove where its present owner lives, because a sold vehicle keeps its number.
How it is written
You will see it as JH01, JH 01 or JH-01. Vahan accepts the number without spaces, for example JH01AB1234.
Series letters
The two letters after 01 are the running series the office issues. When one series fills up, the next begins.
Which codes surround the RTO Ranchi Jharkhand area?
The RTO Ranchi Jharkhand area borders eight Jharkhand districts and one district of West Bengal. Each has its own office and code, so a car from a neighbouring town is handled there even when it is driven in Ranchi every day.
| Code | Office | District | Side of Ranchi |
|---|---|---|---|
| JH 23 | Khunti | Khunti | South |
| JH 24 | Ramgarh | Ramgarh | North-east |
| JH 02 | Hazaribagh | Hazaribagh | North |
| JH 13 | Chatra | Chatra | North-west |
| JH 19 | Latehar | Latehar | West |
| JH 08 | Lohardaga | Lohardaga | West |
| JH 07 | Gumla | Gumla | South-west |
| JH 22 | Seraikela Kharsawan | Seraikela Kharsawan | South-east |
The West Bengal edge
Purulia district of West Bengal touches Ranchi on the east. Vehicles from there carry a WB number and belong to Bengal’s offices.
Full state list
All 24 codes from JH 01 to JH 24 are set out in our Jharkhand RTO code guide.
How does the transport department Jharkhand run the Ranchi office?
The transport department Jharkhand sets state rules, road tax and fees, and posts officers to district offices such as Ranchi. The district office applies those rules locally. National rules come from the Motor Vehicles Act and MoRTH, while the software comes from NIC.
State notices
Fee changes, special drives and holiday closures are announced by the state department. Check its site before a planned visit.
Why the state website matters
Because we could not reach it from our checking machine, confirm any office detail there yourself rather than relying on directories.
Which Jharkhand transport portals should Ranchi residents use?
For Jharkhand transport services, two national portals do most of the work: Vahan for vehicles and Sarathi for licences. Both list Jharkhand and the Ranchi office in their drop-downs. The state department site carries notices, and the Jharkhand Police site runs traffic e-challans.
Traffic fines
Challans issued on Ranchi roads can be checked and paid online. See our e-challan Jharkhand guide for the state police portal.
mParivahan
The mParivahan app shows your RC and licence in digital form, which traffic police accept.
Which services does RTO Ranchi handle?
RTO Ranchi handles the standard Motor Vehicles Act list: first registration, ownership transfer, duplicate RC, hypothecation entry or removal, NOC, learner licence, driving licence, renewals, fitness and permits. Staff step in where a person, vehicle or original paper must be checked.
Vehicle services
Dealers usually file new registrations for buyers. Owners apply themselves for an address change, a duplicate RC or removal of a loan entry after closing the loan.
Licence services
The learner test, the driving test on the track, biometrics and photo capture take place at the office after you apply on Sarathi.
Where is the Ranchi transport office and when is it open?
The office is in Ranchi city, but we could not verify a current address, phone number or set of hours, so we do not print any. Look up the location on the Jharkhand Transport Department site or the Parivahan office list, and use the time on your slot receipt.

Phone numbers on agents’ boards
Numbers seen outside offices or on old forum posts may be out of date. For payment or OTP errors, use the Parivahan helpdesk shown on the portal.
Holiday closures
Counters close on Jharkhand government holidays. Check that your booked date is still open in festival weeks.
What can you finish online before a Ranchi visit?
Nearly everything except the test or inspection. Choose Jharkhand and the Ranchi office, fill in the form, upload scans, pay online and book a date if the portal asks. Some services, such as certain Aadhaar-based ones, end online without a visit.

Fees shown on screen
The portal works out the fee for your service and vehicle class. Pay only that amount and keep the receipt.
Save the application number
Write down the application number. Staff use it to find your file at the counter.
Which documents should you carry to the Ranchi office?
Carry the originals of everything you uploaded, the payment receipt, the slot printout and a set of self-attested copies. Name or date differences between Aadhaar and the RC are a frequent reason files are returned.
For a vehicle visit
Bring the RC, insurance and PUC, plus the bank NOC for a loan closure or the seller’s papers for a transfer.
For a licence test
Bring the learner licence, age and address proof, and a vehicle of the right class with valid papers.
How do you check a JH 01 vehicle online?
Type the full number into Vahan’s know-your-vehicle search or the mParivahan app. The result shows the registering office, class, fuel, registration date and insurance and fitness validity. For a JH 01 number, the office should read Ranchi.
Before buying used
A different model, a lapsed insurance date or a chassis mismatch is a reason to stop and ask questions.
Pending dues
Unpaid challans or tax can hold up a transfer at the office, so check them first.
What changed for Khunti vehicles after 2007?
Khunti was carved out of Ranchi district on 12 September 2007, taking its subdivision and six blocks. New registrations there now go to the JH 23 Khunti office. A vehicle registered in Khunti before the split may still show JH 01, because a number does not change with district boundaries.
Which office holds your record
The registering authority printed on your RC tells you which office has your file. Use that office for any change.
Which mistakes cause a second trip to the Ranchi office?
The usual ones are coming without a slot, forgetting originals, unpaid challans and spelling mismatches. People from Ramgarh, Khunti or Lohardaga sometimes travel to Ranchi when their record is held at home, and lose a day.

Touts near the office
Every service can be applied for directly on Parivahan. If you use an agent, ask for the official receipt to see what the government charged.
How do Ranchi owners move a vehicle out of Jharkhand?
Apply on Vahan for an NOC from the Ranchi office, clear challans and dues, then register the vehicle again in the new state. A vehicle kept in another state for more than 12 months needs that new registration. Moving within Ranchi district only means updating the address.
Loan on the vehicle
Get the lender’s consent or NOC before you apply, or the request will be held back.

JH 01 is which district?
JH 01 is Ranchi district, the capital district of Jharkhand. The code covers the whole district, including rural blocks such as Silli, Bundu and Tamar.
Is Kanke or Namkum registered under JH 01?
Yes. Kanke, Namkum, Ratu, Ormanjhi and the other blocks of the Ranchi Sadar subdivision are inside Ranchi district, so new vehicles there are normally registered as JH 01.
What is the address of DTO Ranchi?
We could not confirm a current address, so we do not publish one. Check the Jharkhand Transport Department website or the Parivahan office list before you travel.

The learner licence and some renewals can be done online on Sarathi. A permanent licence still needs a driving test at the office track.
How do I check a JH 01 vehicle number?
