Where is RTO Tambaram and which code does it use?

RTO Tambaram is the registering authority behind the TN 11 code. Tamil Nadu’s published office list names its location simply as Tambaram, puts it in Chengalpattu district and groups it in the Chennai South zone. Tambaram itself became a city corporation on 3 November 2021, but the transport code predates that change.

Reaching Tambaram

Tambaram railway station is one of the four main terminals around Chennai and sits on the South line of the suburban railway, so most residents can reach the town by local train. Ask locally for the last stretch, because we could not confirm the office building’s street location.

Why the code matters more than the name

People call it “Tambaram RTO”, while Vahan drop-downs show the office by name and code. Whenever you apply online, pick the entry that matches TN 11 on your registration certificate rather than guessing from your street address.

What does the TN 11 RTO office cover?

The TN 11 RTO office covers a belt of suburbs along the railway south of the airport. Locality records list TN 11 for Chromepet, Selaiyur, Chitlapakkam, Perungalathur and Vandalur. The edges are less tidy: some nearby towns list Meenambakkam, Kundrathur, Sholinganallur or Chengalpattu instead.

The core TN 11 suburbs

Chromepet, Selaiyur and Chitlapakkam form the dense middle of the area, with Perungalathur and Vandalur further south towards the zoo and the city limits. Owners in these pockets will normally find Tambaram printed as the registering authority.

Treat the table as a guide

These entries come from public locality pages, not an official boundary map. A street-level boundary can run through a single neighbourhood, so your RC or Vahan record remains the final word.

Why do Pallavaram and Pammal show other codes?

Pallavaram lists two codes, TN 11 and TN 22, because the Tambaram and Meenambakkam offices meet around it. Pammal, a short distance west, lists TN 85, the Kundrathur office. The Tambaram city infobox itself lists TN 11, TN 22 and TN 85, reflecting this three-way split.

What this means for residents

Two families on adjoining streets in Pallavaram may hold RCs from different offices. Neither is wrong. The office that first registered the vehicle, or the one that took over the file after an address change, handles its later work.

When a dealer registers your vehicle

Showrooms usually register new vehicles at the office covering the buyer’s address. If your new RC shows TN 22 or TN 85 while you expected TN 11, check the address on the invoice before raising a complaint.

Was Sholinganallur once part of the Tambaram series?

Yes. The Tamil Nadu State Transport Authority list of August 2023 shows the Sholinganallur office, now TN 14, with the old series TN 11 Z. In other words, before Sholinganallur got its own number, vehicles registered there carried a Tambaram code with a Z series.

Spotting an old TN 11 Z plate

A plate reading TN 11 Z followed by four digits may therefore belong to an OMR-side vehicle rather than one from Tambaram proper. Medavakkam, for example, now lists TN 14.

Older records on Vahan

The number on an older vehicle does not change when an office is split. Its Vahan record may now sit with the newer office, which is why the registering authority shown online can differ from what the plate suggests.

Which offices neighbour Tambaram in the Chennai South zone?

The Chennai South zone holds thirteen offices and unit offices, from the city’s coastal RTOs to Kanchipuram. The ones closest to Tambaram are Meenambakkam-Alandur, Kundrathur, Sholinganallur and Chengalpattu. Knowing them helps when your address sits near a boundary.

Inside the city

Does the Tambaram RTO sit in Chennai or Chengalpattu district?

The office list files the Tambaram RTO under Chengalpattu district, not Chennai district, even though the town is part of the wider Chennai metropolitan area. The zone name, Chennai South, is an administrative grouping and does not change the district.

Why the district label confuses people

Many people still think of Tambaram as part of the old Kanchipuram district or simply as “Chennai”. For RTO purposes the district rarely matters; you deal with the office code and the Vahan or Sarathi entry for it.

How do you read a TN 11 number plate?

A TN 11 plate follows the national four-part pattern: TN for Tamil Nadu, 11 for Tambaram, one or two series letters, and a four-digit serial number. Only the first two parts tell you anything about where the vehicle was registered.

Series letters with a meaning

In Tamil Nadu the letter G marks government vehicles and N marks state transport undertakings. So a TN 11 G plate is a government vehicle registered at Tambaram, while most private cars and two-wheelers carry other series.

Codes that do not exist

You will never see a genuine TN 08 or TN 17, because the state skips office numbers whose digits add up to eight. A plate showing one of these is not a valid Tamil Nadu registration.

Which services does the Tambaram office handle?

Like other RTOs, the Tambaram office handles vehicle registration and licence work for its area: new registrations, ownership transfers, address changes, loan entries, duplicate RCs, fitness checks for transport vehicles, and learner and driving licence tests. The online application comes first in almost every case.

Vehicle-side work

Transfers, hypothecation additions or removals, and address changes begin on Vahan. Staff verify the papers and, where the rules require it, an inspector checks the vehicle before approval.

Licence-side work

Learner tests, the driving test and licence renewals run through Sarathi. You book the slot online and attend for biometrics or the test itself.

How do you plan a visit to the Tambaram RTO?

Plan a Tambaram RTO visit only after the online part is done. Apply on the right portal, pay, and book a slot if the service needs one. Then take the acknowledgement, originals and copies. This keeps the trip short and avoids being sent back for a missing receipt.

1. Check the code. Make sure the registering office on your RC or Vahan record is TN 11 Tambaram.
2. Apply online. Fill the Vahan form for vehicle work or the Sarathi form for licence work.
3. Pay and save. Pay the fee on the portal and keep the receipt with the application number.
4. Book a slot. Choose an appointment only if the service needs an inspection, test or document check.
5. Carry originals. Take the slip, original documents and self-attested copies to the Tambaram office.

Fees

Fees differ by service and vehicle class, and the portal shows the amount before payment. We do not list figures here; the payment screen on Vahan or Sarathi is the reliable source.

Which Tambaram RTO tasks can you finish online?

Several tasks need no visit at all: downloading a copy of your RC, checking application status, viewing vehicle details and paying certain fees. These run on the national Vahan, mParivahan and DigiLocker services rather than on a separate Tambaram website.

Getting your RC copy

Vahan’s application status option shows where a file stands. Keep the application number handy; SMS updates also arrive at each stage.

How do you check a TN 11 vehicle’s details?

Use the “Know Your Vehicle Details” option on Vahan or the mParivahan app. Enter the TN 11 registration number and you will see the registering office, vehicle class, fuel, registration date and insurance or fitness validity. Owner details are partly masked for privacy.

Before buying a used vehicle

Match the chassis digits, model and office shown online with the seller’s RC. If any of them differ, pause the deal until the seller explains the mismatch.

What are the Tambaram RTO timings and contact details?

We could not verify the office address, phone number, email or working hours from an official source, because the state transport site did not load during our check. Rather than repeat unchecked directory entries, we suggest confirming these on the Tamil Nadu transport department site before travelling.

Where to look

The state site’s office list is the right place to confirm the current address and phone. Government holidays and special drives can also change hours, so check close to your visit.

Does moving out of Tambaram change a TN 11 plate?

No. Within Tamil Nadu, a TN 11 number stays on the vehicle when you move to Coimbatore or Madurai. You update the address on the RC through Vahan, and the new office may take over the record. A new registration mark is needed only after moving to another state.

Moving within the Chennai South zone
