Where is the Sholinganallur RTO office and which code does it issue?

The Sholinganallur RTO office is the registering authority for the TN 14 code. Sholinganallur sits on Old Mahabalipuram Road, roughly 2 km from East Coast Road and about 14 km from Tambaram, at the junction that links the IT corridor with ECR, Tambaram and Adyar. The state groups the office in its Chennai South zone.

Sholinganallur joined the Chennai Corporation in 2011 as the city’s 200th and last ward. Its PIN code is 600119. The road it stands on is officially Rajiv Gandhi Salai, better known as OMR or the IT Expressway, which runs past TIDEL Park towards Mahabalipuram.

On Vahan and Sarathi you choose an office from a drop-down, and the label there is the office name with its code. Pick the TN 14 entry only when your RC or licence already names Sholinganallur, or when your new address falls in its area.

Which localities come under the Sholinganallur RTO?

The Sholinganallur RTO area is the stretch of OMR and ECR south of the Chennai South office. Public locality records list TN 14 for Thoraipakkam, Karapakkam, Pallikaranai, Medavakkam, Injambakkam and Neelankarai, as well as Sholinganallur itself. Perungudi, just north on OMR, lists TN 07 instead.

Navalur, Siruseri (home of the SIPCOT IT Park) and Kelambakkam lie further down the corridor in Chengalpattu district. The sources we checked do not state their registration code, so we do not assign one here; check the office printed on a local RC.

These entries come from locality pages, not an official jurisdiction order. Office limits can follow revenue village lines that cut across a neighbourhood, so your own RC or Vahan record settles the question.

Why do Perungudi and Thiruvanmiyur addresses show TN 07?

Perungudi and Thiruvanmiyur fall under the Chennai (South) office, which issues TN 07 and stands on ECR at Thiruvanmiyur. The boundary between the two offices runs through the OMR and ECR stretch, so neighbours a few kilometres apart can hold different codes.

How is TN 14 linked to the old TN 11 Z series?

The Tamil Nadu State Transport Authority list dated August 2023 shows Sholinganallur as TN 14 with the old series TN 11 Z. Before the office got its own number, vehicles registered on this side carried a Tambaram code with the Z series. The newer number replaced it for fresh registrations.

What this means on the road

A car with a TN 11 Z plate parked in Karapakkam is not out of place. It was simply registered before TN 14 existed. Its later paperwork may still be handled by Sholinganallur.

Is the Sholinganallur RTO in Chennai or Chengalpattu district?

The published RTO list files the Sholinganallur RTO under Chengalpattu district, while locality records place Sholinganallur taluk, Thoraipakkam and Pallikaranai in Chennai district. Both can be true: transport offices follow their own grouping, which need not match current revenue district lines.

Does the district matter to you?

Rarely. Vahan and Sarathi ask for the office and code, not the district. Use the district only when a form asks for your residential address, and enter it as your address proof shows.

Which offices neighbour the Sholinganallur RTO?

Sholinganallur shares the Chennai South zone with the city’s southern RTOs and the suburban offices beyond them. The closest ones are Chennai (South) at Thiruvanmiyur, Tambaram, Meenambakkam-Alandur and Chengalpattu. Knowing them helps when your street sits near an edge.

What does a TN 14 number plate tell you?

A TN 14 plate tells you two things: TN is Tamil Nadu and 14 is Sholinganallur. The series letters and the four-digit serial that follow are allotted in sequence, so they say nothing about the owner’s street. The format has applied nationwide since 1989.

Reserved letters in Tamil Nadu

The state keeps the letter G for government vehicles and N for state transport buses. A TN 14 G plate is therefore a government vehicle registered at Sholinganallur.

Numbers you will never see

Tamil Nadu skips office numbers whose digits add up to eight, so there is no TN 08 or TN 17. Treat any such plate as suspect.

What work does the Sholinganallur RTO handle?

The Sholinganallur office deals with registration and licence work for its area. That covers new vehicle registration, ownership transfer, address change, adding or removing a loan, duplicate RCs, fitness checks for transport vehicles, and learner and driving licence tests. Nearly every service begins with an online form.

Registration-side tasks

Transfers, hypothecation changes and address updates start on Vahan. Staff check the scanned papers, and an inspector looks at the vehicle where the rules ask for it.

Licence-side tasks

Learner tests, the driving test and renewals start on Sarathi. You attend for biometrics or the test on the slot you booked.

How should you prepare for a Sholinganallur RTO visit?

Finish the online steps before you go. Confirm the office code, apply on the correct portal, pay the fee and book a slot if the service needs one. Then carry the slip, receipt and original documents. Arriving with everything ready usually means one trip instead of two.

1. Confirm TN 14. Look at the registering authority on your RC or licence and make sure it reads Sholinganallur.
2. Choose the portal. Use Vahan for registration work and Sarathi for learner or driving licence work.
3. Submit and pay. Upload the documents, pay the fee shown on screen and download the receipt.
4. Book if required. Reserve a slot when the service needs a test, inspection or document check.
5. Attend with papers. Reach the office on time with the slip, receipt, originals and copies.

Which Sholinganallur RTO services can you finish online?

Plenty of work needs no trip to the office. You can download an RC copy, follow an application, view vehicle details and pay many fees from home. These run on the national Vahan, mParivahan and DigiLocker platforms; there is no separate Sholinganallur website.

DigiLocker and mParivahan fetch a digitally signed RC using an OTP on the registered mobile number. Vahan’s status option shows each stage of a pending file.

How do you look up a TN 14 vehicle’s details?

Enter the TN 14 number in the “Know Your Vehicle Details” option on Vahan or in the mParivahan app. The result shows the registering office, vehicle class, fuel type, registration date and insurance or fitness validity, with owner details partly masked.

When buying second-hand

Compare the chassis digits, model and office shown online with the seller’s papers. A TN 11 Z vehicle may now show Sholinganallur as its office, which is normal.

We could not confirm the street address, phone number, email or working hours from an official source, as the state transport site did not load during our check. We have chosen not to copy unverified directory entries, which are often outdated.

How to confirm before you travel

Open the office list on the Tamil Nadu transport department site, or call the number printed there. Check close to your visit, since holidays and special drives can change hours.

Does moving along OMR change a TN 14 registration?

No. Moving within Tamil Nadu never changes the number on a vehicle. If you shift from Thoraipakkam to Tambaram, the TN 14 plate stays; you file an address change on Vahan and the new office may take over the record. A fresh registration mark is needed only when you move to another state.

Moving into the TN 14 area

The reverse also holds. A TN 07 car whose owner moves to Medavakkam keeps its plate, and after the address update later RC work may go to Sholinganallur.
