TN 25 which district: Tiruvannamalai, with the Erode codes TN 33 and TN 56
TN 25 which district? It is Tiruvannamalai district in northern Tamil Nadu, issued by the Tiruvannamalai RTO in the Villupuram transport zone. Arani in the same district uses TN 97. The codes people often search alongside it sit far away in Erode district: TN 33 is Erode East, TN 86 Erode West and TN 56 Perundurai.
Key takeaways
- TN 25 = Tiruvannamalai, the district's main office, grouped under the Villupuram zone.
- TN 97 Arani is Tiruvannamalai's second code, with a Cheyyar unit office listed as 97Z.
- TN 33 is the Erode East RTO office, and Erode region state buses carry TN 33 N.
- TN 86 is Erode West, TN 56 is Perundurai and TN 36 is Gobichettipalayam, all in Erode district.
- Namakkal codes 28, 34 and 88 share the Erode zone but are not Erode district numbers.
- The Vahan record names the actual registering office; a code table is only a starting point.

TN 25 which district does the code belong to?
Ask TN 25 which district and the answer is Tiruvannamalai, the temple town district north of Villupuram in Tamil Nadu. The Tiruvannamalai regional transport office issues the code. So if a car or bike carries TN 25 after the state letters, it was first registered in Tiruvannamalai, whatever road it is on today.

One district, two codes
Tiruvannamalai is a large district, and it has a second office at Arani with the code TN 97. A TN 25 plate always points to Tiruvannamalai district, but a Tiruvannamalai vehicle may also read TN 97.
Where the answer comes from
The mapping here comes from the national RTO list kept on Wikipedia, read in October 2026. We could not reach the state transport site from our machine, so treat the Vahan record as the final word.
What kind of district is Tiruvannamalai?
Tiruvannamalai district covers 6,191 sq km and had 24.65 lakh people (2,464,875) in the 2011 census. Wikipedia ranks it the second largest district in Tamil Nadu by area, after Dindigul. It was formed in 1989, when the old North Arcot district was split in two.
Pilgrim traffic
The headquarters town is home to the Annamalaiyar Temple on Annamalai hill. The monthly Girivalam walk and the yearly Karthika Deepam festival draw large crowds, so plates from all over the state, and beyond, crowd the town on those days.
Silk and farming towns
Arani is known for silk weaving, and much of the district is rural. That mix of small towns explains why a second RTO at Arani, plus a unit office at Cheyyar, makes sense for people who would otherwise travel far.
Which office issues TN 25 plates?
The Tiruvannamalai RTO is the office behind TN 25. The source list files it under the Villupuram transport zone, the regional grouping that supervises several northern districts. Zone and district are different things: the zone is an administrative cluster, while the district is the revenue district named on your address proof.
Services at the counter
Like other district offices, the TN 25 office handles first registration, transfer of ownership, address changes on the RC, hypothecation entries, duplicate RCs and NOCs. Many of these begin online on the Parivahan portal and finish with a document check.
Getting registered here
A buyer whose address falls in the office’s area gets the next free TN 25 number, usually through the dealer. For the state-wide procedure, see our guide to RTO Tamil Nadu.
Why do Tiruvannamalai region buses show TN 25 N?
Tamil Nadu sets aside the N series for State Transport Corporation vehicles. The source list says buses of the TNSTC Villupuram, Thiruvannamalai region are registered at the TN 25 office under TN 25 N followed by four digits. A bus with that prefix belongs to the state corporation.
Other depots in the same corporation
TNSTC Villupuram runs several regions. The same list puts its Villupuram region buses on TN 32 N, Cuddalore on TN 31 N and Vellore on TN 23 N.
Private buses look different
A privately owned bus in Tiruvannamalai carries ordinary series letters after TN 25. Only the N or AN start signals a corporation vehicle.
Is TN 97 Arani also a Tiruvannamalai code?
Yes. TN 97 is the Arani regional transport office, and the source list places it in Tiruvannamalai district and the Villupuram zone. Arani is one of the district’s three sub-district centres, together with Tiruvannamalai and Cheyyar, so it has its own office rather than sending everyone to the headquarters.
Arani and TN 25 side by side
Both codes are equal in status. Your address decides which one applies: an Arani-side address normally goes to 97, a headquarters-side one to 25.
A high number for an old town
The number 97 is near the top of Tamil Nadu’s list, which suggests the office came later than TN 25. We found no verified opening date, so we do not give one.
Where does Cheyyar fit in the TN 97 series?
Cheyyar appears in the list as TN 97Z, a unit office of the Arani RTO. A unit office is a smaller counter that works under a parent office. Vehicles registered there carry TN 97 on the plate; the Z only marks the unit in office listings.
Why a unit and not a full RTO
A unit lets people in the eastern taluks file routine work nearby. Some services may still be sent on to Arani.
Cheyyar taluk headquarters
Wikipedia lists Tiruvethipuram as the headquarters of Cheyyar taluk. The transport unit is listed under the Cheyyar name.
Do Tiruvannamalai taluks map to TN 25 or TN 97?
The district has 12 taluks: Arani, Chengam, Tiruvannamalai, Polur, Thandarampattu, Vandavasi, Kalasapakkam, Chetpet, Kilpennathur, Jamunamarathoor, Cheyyar and Vembakkam. The source list does not say which taluks report to which office, and we found no official split we could verify.
A reasonable guess, not a rule
Arani and Cheyyar addresses most likely go to the TN 97 side, because those are its office and unit. For Polur, Vandavasi and others, ask the nearest office before you file.
Ask your dealer
Dealers in Tiruvannamalai and Arani submit registrations daily and know which counter accepts your pin code. Their answer is quicker than guessing from a map.
Which other codes share the Villupuram transport zone?
The Villupuram zone groups the codes of four districts: Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Cuddalore and Kallakurichi. Knowing the zone helps when you see a plate like TN 31 or TN 16 near Tiruvannamalai and wonder whether it is local. It is from the same zone, but not the same district.
| Code | Office | District | Unit offices in the list |
|---|---|---|---|
| TN 25 | Tiruvannamalai | Tiruvannamalai | None |
| TN 97 | Arani | Tiruvannamalai | Cheyyar (97Z) |
| TN 32 | Villupuram | Villupuram | None |
| TN 16 | Tindivanam | Villupuram | Gingee (16Z) |
| TN 31 | Cuddalore | Cuddalore | Neyveli (31Y), Panruti (31Z) |
| TN 91 | Chidambaram | Cuddalore | Virudhachalam (91Z) |
| TN 15 | Ulundurpet | Kallakurichi | Kallakurichi shares the series (15M) |
Neighbours outside the zone
To the north, Vellore (TN 23) and Krishnagiri (TN 24) fall in the Vellore zone, and Tirupattur district uses TN 83. Kanchipuram (TN 21) sits in Chennai South. For the Vellore office, see our page on the regional transport office Vellore.
Dharmapuri to the west
Dharmapuri, which also borders Tiruvannamalai, uses TN 29 and belongs to the Salem zone.

TN 33 which district?
TN 33 is Erode district, in the west of Tamil Nadu on the Kaveri river. The code belongs to the Erode (East) office and heads the Erode transport zone in the source list. Erode city has a second office, Erode West, so not every Erode city vehicle carries 33.
Erode district at a glance
The district covers 6,036 sq km and had 22.52 lakh people (2,251,744) in 2011. It has two revenue divisions, Erode and Gobichettipalayam, and 10 taluks. It borders Karnataka’s Chamarajanagar district to the north.
Why it is searched with TN 25
The two codes are not neighbours: Tiruvannamalai is in the north-east, Erode in the west. They simply share a similar search pattern, so we answer both here.
What does the Erode East RTO office handle?
The Erode East RTO office issues new TN 33 registrations for addresses in its zone and handles the usual RC work: transfers, address changes, loan entries, duplicates and NOCs. It also registers the TNSTC Coimbatore, Erode region buses, which run on TN 33 N plates.
Address and timings
We could not verify a street address, PIN code, phone number or working hours. Use the Parivahan RTO directory or the Tamil Nadu Transport Department website, and check again before travelling, as offices do relocate.
Fines are a police matter
The RTO does not collect traffic challans. For pending fines on a TN 33 number, our bike case check guide explains the online search.
How is Erode East different from TN 86 Erode West?
Both offices are in Erode city, Erode district and the Erode zone. TN 33 is East and TN 86 is West. The only difference for a buyer is which side of the city the RC address falls on. Services, fees and paperwork do not change between them.

The bus series stays with 33
The source notes the TN 33 N bus series for East only. It records no bus series at the West office.
No street boundary published
We found no verified list of wards for each side. Ask either office, or your dealer, which one serves your address.
TN 56 which district?
TN 56 is Erode district as well. It is the code of the Perundurai RTO, a town on the western approach to Erode city. So a TN 56 plate is an Erode district vehicle, but it was registered at the Perundurai counter, not at either city office.
Perundurai taluk
Perundurai is one of the four taluks of the Erode revenue division, alongside Erode, Kodumudi and Modakurichi. That revenue map is not a transport map, but it shows the town’s place in the district.
No unit office listed
The source list shows no unit office under TN 56.
Why does Perundurai have its own code?
The source list does not give a reason, so we will not invent one. What we can say is that Perundurai hosts a large SIPCOT industrial estate and an SEZ complex, according to its Wikipedia entry. Industrial areas bring many goods vehicles and new registrations, which is the usual case for a separate office.
Effect on buyers
A Perundurai-side buyer gets a TN 56 number without going into Erode city. The services are the same as at TN 33 or TN 86.
Trucks on the highway
Because the town sits on a main road west of Erode, you will see many TN 56 goods vehicles on long routes.
How many Erode RTO office codes are there?
The Erode RTO office network has four main codes in the source list: TN 33 Erode East, TN 86 Erode West, TN 56 Perundurai and TN 36 Gobichettipalayam. Two more counters, Bhavani and Sathyamangalam, work as unit offices under TN 36 and do not get separate plate numbers.

Counting units
Some lists count every counter and arrive at six. We count four, because a unit shares its parent’s plate code.
City versus district
Inside Erode city you will meet 33 and 86 most. Out in the district, 56 and 36 take over.
Which Erode RTO office serves Gobichettipalayam, Bhavani and Sathyamangalam?
The Gobichettipalayam RTO, code TN 36, covers the northern half of the district. The source lists Bhavani as 36W and Sathyamangalam as 36Z, both unit offices. That lines up with the Gobichettipalayam revenue division, which also holds the Anthiyur, Nambiyur and Thalavadi taluks.
Hill and forest roads
Sathyamangalam leads up to the Karnataka border and the tiger reserve. Vehicles registered at that unit still read TN 36.
Bhavani at the river junction
Bhavani sits where the Bhavani river meets the Kaveri. Its unit saves residents a trip to Gobi for routine work.
Full list of Erode district RTO codes
The table below covers every code the source places inside Erode district. Read the two digits after TN, then match them in the first column. If the digits are missing here, the vehicle was first registered outside the district.
| Code | Office | Type | Notes from the source |
|---|---|---|---|
| TN 33 | Erode (East) | RTO | TNSTC Erode region buses in TN 33 N |
| TN 86 | Erode (West) | RTO | None |
| TN 56 | Perundurai | RTO | None |
| TN 36 | Gobichettipalayam | RTO | Units: Bhavani (36W), Sathyamangalam (36Z) |
Units on the RC
The RC may name the unit, such as Bhavani, even though the plate shows TN 36. That is normal.
Neighbouring Tamil Nadu codes
Erode borders Tiruppur (TN 39, 42, 78), Coimbatore and the Nilgiris to the west, and Salem, Namakkal and Karur to the east. For Coimbatore’s city codes, see TN 66 which district.
Which Namakkal codes sit in the Erode zone?
The Erode transport zone is wider than Erode district. It also holds three Namakkal district offices, which is why people sometimes count them as Erode numbers. They are not: the district on those plates is Namakkal.
| Code | Office | District | Unit or shared series |
|---|---|---|---|
| TN 28 | Namakkal (North) | Namakkal | Rasipuram unit (28Z) |
| TN 34 | Tiruchengode | Namakkal | Kumarapalayam shares the series (34M) |
| TN 88 | Namakkal (South) | Namakkal | Paramathi Velur unit (88Z) |
Shared series explained
A shared series means two counters draw numbers from one running sequence. Kumarapalayam and Tiruchengode both issue TN 34 numbers.
Across the Kaveri
Kumarapalayam faces Bhavani across the river, so TN 34 and TN 36 plates mix on the same bridges every day.
Why are TN 25, TN 33 and TN 56 often confused?
The three codes look alike on paper but point to two districts on opposite sides of the state. TN 25 is Tiruvannamalai in the north-east. TN 33 and TN 56 are both Erode, in the west. The confusion usually comes from Namakkal codes in the Erode zone and from missing numbers in the sequence.

A quick memory aid
Think “25 for the hill temple, 33 and 56 for the Kaveri town.” Arani’s 97 joins 25; Erode West’s 86 joins 33.
Zones are not neighbours
TN 25 reports to the Villupuram zone and TN 33 and TN 56 to the Erode zone. No district or zone links them, only the look of the numbers.
How do you read a TN 25 number plate?
A TN 25 number plate has four parts: TN for Tamil Nadu, 25 for the Tiruvannamalai office, one or two series letters, and a running number of up to four digits. In the invented example TN 25 CD 4821, only the 25 tells you the district.

The same pattern in Erode
Swap 25 for 33, 86, 56 or 36 and the plate reads the same way, pointing to an Erode office instead.
HSRP plates
New vehicles get high-security registration plates fitted by the dealer. The characters follow the same order. To look up details behind a plate, see our Vahan and RTO codes hub.
What do N and G series letters show on these plates?
Tamil Nadu reserves two groups of series letters. N or AN marks State Transport Corporation vehicles, and G-based series such as G, AG, BG, CG and DG mark government-owned vehicles. So TN 25 N is a state bus, while TN 33 G would be a government vehicle registered at Erode East.
| Series starts with | What it signals | Example from this page |
|---|---|---|
| N or AN | State Transport Corporation vehicle | TN 25 N (Tiruvannamalai region), TN 33 N (Erode region) |
| G, AG, BG, CG, DG | Government-owned vehicle | TN 56 G or TN 86 G |
| Any other letters | Private and other owners | Most cars, bikes and trucks |
Letters move in order
Private series are issued one after another as each block of numbers runs out.
Confirm before relying on it
The series letter is a hint about ownership, not proof. The Vahan entry is what counts.
Why are there no TN 26 or TN 35 plates?
The source list says no Tamil Nadu RTO is given a number whose digits add up to 8. That rule removes 26 and 35, the numbers right after TN 25 and two after TN 33, along with 08, 17, 44, 53, 62, 71, 80, 89 and 98. No official explanation is given.
Why this matters here
People who see TN 25 sometimes expect TN 26 to be the next district. It does not exist. The same goes for 35 near the Erode codes.
Spotting a suspect plate
A plate reading TN 26 or TN 35 does not match any office in the list. Treat it as a possible fake and check it on Vahan.
How to check which office registered a TN 25, TN 33 or TN 56 vehicle
A code list can lag behind changes, and a plate can be wrong. The registering authority on the national Vahan record is the reliable answer. These four steps work for any Tamil Nadu number, from Tiruvannamalai to Perundurai.
- Note the full number. Copy every character from the plate or RC, for example TN 25 followed by the series letters and digits.
- Open a national lookup. Use the Vahan citizen services site or the mParivahan app and choose the RC or vehicle search.
- Enter it as one string. Type the number without spaces and complete the captcha or OTP step.
- Read the registering authority. A TN 25 vehicle should show Tiruvannamalai; TN 33 should show Erode East and TN 56 Perundurai.
When the office does not match
A different office usually means a transfer or re-registration. Ask the seller for the RC history and any NOC before paying.
Used-vehicle tip
Match the chassis number on the RC with the one on the vehicle. A mismatch is a bigger warning sign than any code.
What happens to the code when you move between districts?
Nothing. The number stays with the vehicle for its life in Tamil Nadu. If a TN 25 owner moves to Erode, the plate keeps 25 and the owner updates the address on the RC. A move to another state is different and needs an NOC and fresh registration there.
Address update
The change of address starts online with proof of the new address. The new office may ask to see the vehicle.
Buying from another district
An Erode buyer who picks up a used TN 25 car keeps TN 25. Only the ownership transfer is recorded.
Where can you find the address and timings of these RTOs?
We have not listed street addresses, phone numbers or hours for the Tiruvannamalai, Arani, Erode East, Erode West or Perundurai offices, because we could not verify them. The Parivahan RTO directory and the Tamil Nadu Transport Department website are the places to check current details.
Before you go
Most services need an online application and sometimes a booked slot before the counter will see you. Bring originals and copies of your RC, insurance and address proof.
Report a change
If you find that an office has moved, the official directory is updated first. Rely on it over any third-party list, including ours.
