TS 08 which district: Medchal-Malkajgiri, plus every Telangana office code

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 15 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

TS 08 which district? It belongs to Medchal-Malkajgiri district, on the northern and eastern fringe of Hyderabad. The main office is at Medchal, with sub-agency units at Uppal Kalan and Kukatpally. New vehicles from the same office now get TG 08, while older TS 08 numbers stay valid. Before 2014 much of this area carried AP 29.

Key takeaways

  • TS 08 = Medchal-Malkajgiri district, registered at Medchal with units at Uppal Kalan and Kukatpally.
  • The district lies in the Hyderabad urban area but is not part of Hyderabad district, which uses TS 09 to TS 13.
  • Since March 2024 new Telangana plates start with TG; a TS 08 number keeps its letters for life.
  • Telangana's office codes run from 01 Adilabad to 38 Narayanpet.
  • Many codes above 17 came from the 2016 district reorganisation, so older plates in those towns show a parent district's code.
  • Always confirm a vehicle's registering office on Vahan or mParivahan; code lists are a guide, not a record.

TS 08 which district is it?

The answer to TS 08 which district is Medchal-Malkajgiri, a district wrapped around the north and east of Hyderabad. Its registering office is at Medchal, and two smaller units at Uppal Kalan and Kukatpally issue numbers under the same 08. A car bought in Alwal, Malkajgiri or Ghatkesar will usually carry this code.

TS 08 sits on the northern and eastern edge of the Hyderabad urban area.

One code for the whole district

Telangana gives most districts a single office number, and Medchal-Malkajgiri follows that rule. Whether a buyer lives in Medchal town or in a Kukatpally housing colony, the plate shows 08. The counter that handled the paperwork does not appear on the plate.

What the district looks like

The Wikipedia entry on the district puts its area at 1,084 sq km and its population at about 24.4 lakh (2,440,073). The headquarters is listed as Shamirpet. That makes it one of the busiest registration zones in the state, despite its small size.

Which areas fall under the TS 08 office?

The district has two revenue divisions, Keesara and Malkajgiri, with 15 mandals between them. Every mandal in both divisions falls inside the TS 08 area, so the list below doubles as a rough map of where TS 08 vehicles come from. Street-level boundaries still follow official notifications.

Malkajgiri division mandals

This western and central half covers Alwal, Bachupally, Balanagar, Dundigal Gandimaisamma, Kukatpally, Malkajgiri, Quthbullapur and Muduchintalpalli. Most of it is dense city fabric: IT corridors near Kukatpally, the Balanagar industrial belt and the residential sprawl of Quthbullapur.

Keesara division mandals

The eastern and northern half takes in Ghatkesar, Kapra, Keesara, Medchal, Medipally, Shamirpet and Uppal. Here the city thins into lakes, colleges and highway towns. Shamirpet Lake and the stadium at Uppal are two landmarks named in the district article.

Why is TS 08 outside Hyderabad district?

Hyderabad district is small and covers only the old core of the city. Medchal, Uppal Kalan and Kukatpally sit in the municipal area of Hyderabad but not in its district, which is why the source list marks them separately. TS 08 is therefore a suburban district code, not a city one.

Same city, different district

A resident of Uppal may say they live in Hyderabad, and the postal address may agree. For registration, though, the district decides the code. That is why two neighbours a few kilometres apart can hold TS 08 and TS 10 plates.

Other fringe offices

The same note applies to Attapur (TS 07) in Ranga Reddy district and Patancheru, a unit of the Sangareddy code TS 15. Together with TS 08 they ring the city on three sides.

All three units register vehicles under the same district code.

What did TS 08 vehicles carry before 2014?

Until Telangana was formed, the area belonged to Rangareddy district in united Andhra Pradesh. The source list shows AP 28 at Attapur and AP 29 at Uppal for Rangareddy. Older vehicles from Uppal, Malkajgiri and nearby colonies often still show AP 29 on their plates.

From Rangareddy to Medchal-Malkajgiri

In the 2016 reorganisation Medchal-Malkajgiri was carved out of Rangareddy, along with Vikarabad. The 08 office moved with it, leaving TS 07 at Attapur as the Ranga Reddy code.

The source list states that AP and TS codes stay valid on vehicles registered under them. An AP 29 car does not need a new number just because the state changed.

TG passing on a new Medchal vehicle

A Medchal-area buyer today gets TG 08, not TS 08. A MoRTH gazette notification made TG the code for new Telangana registrations from 12 March 2024. The office number, 08, did not change, so the shift is only in the first two letters.

What “passing” means here

People call the registration code a vehicle’s “passing”. A TG 08 car is said to have Medchal passing. For the wider TS versus TG explanation, see our page on TG passing which state.

Mixed plates on the same road

Expect TS 08 and TG 08 cars side by side for years. The TS letters ran from 18 June 2014 to 14 March 2024, and every number from that period stays as issued.

Telangana RTO code list from 01 to 38

The Telangana RTO code list runs from 01 Adilabad to 38 Narayanpet. The first sixteen numbers follow the older districts and Hyderabad’s zones. Higher numbers mostly arrived with the districts created in 2016 and 2019. The same number works with TS or TG in front of it.

How to use the table

Read the two digits after TS or TG and find them in the first column. Units in brackets are sub-agencies that issue the same code. For a deeper look at plate formats, colours and HSRP, our TS number plate guide covers the plate itself.

Codes added after 2016

On 11 October 2016, 21 new districts were created, and most received codes 17 to 36. Mulugu and Narayanpet followed in 2019 with 37 and 38. Older vehicles in those towns may show the parent district’s number.

Which Hyderabad RTO code matches your area?

The core Hyderabad RTO code set is 09 to 13, one office per city zone, with 14 held in reserve. Suburbs outside Hyderabad district use 07, 08 or 15. Your address on the RC decides which applies, not the nearest office.

Zone versus district

Codes 09 to 13 split one district into compass zones. Code 08 is different: it covers a whole separate district. That is the main reason 08 confuses people who assume every Hyderabad plate belongs to the city district.

Stat card counting Hyderabad RTO code zones inside and around the city in Telangana
TS 14 is listed as reserved for Hyderabad and has no office of its own.

TS 13 which district?

TS 13 is Hyderabad district, west zone, with its office at Tolichowki. Before 2014 the west zone code was AP 13 and the office was listed at Mehdipatnam. Vehicles from Tolichowki, Golconda and the Mehdipatnam side typically carry 13.

West zone and TS 08

Kukatpally lies north-west of the city, yet it uses 08, not 13, because it falls in Medchal-Malkajgiri district. The compass name of a zone does not override the district line.

Old and new west codes

An AP 13 car, a TS 13 car and a TG 13 car can all come from the same office. Only the date of registration differs.

TS 11 which district?

TS 11 is the east zone of Hyderabad district, registered at Malakpet. Its old Andhra Pradesh code was AP 11, so the office number survived both letter changes. East-side colonies within the district boundary get 11.

Where east meets TS 08

Uppal is east of the city but sits in Medchal-Malkajgiri, so its vehicles carry 08. A move of a few kilometres across the district line changes the code a new buyer receives.

Reading a TS 11 record

On Vahan the registering authority for 11 should name Malakpet. If it names another office, the vehicle may have been transferred.

TS 04 which district?

TS 04 is Khammam district, with the main office at Khammam and units at Sathupalli and Wyra. Under united Andhra Pradesh the district used AP 20. It is one of the original district codes that kept its place after 2014.

Khammam’s eastern neighbour

Part of the old Khammam area became Bhadradri Kothagudem in 2016, which now has its own code, 28, with a unit at Bhadrachalam.

Units under 04

Buyers near Sathupalli or Wyra can register at those units and still receive 04 on the plate.

TS 03 which district?

TS 03 is the Warangal office that now serves Hanamkonda district. This is a common trap: the office name says Warangal, but the district behind 03 is Hanamkonda. Warangal district itself has a separate code, 24.

Why two Warangal codes exist

The old Warangal district (AP 36 before 2014) was split in the 2016 reorganisation and again later. Code 03 stayed with the Hanamkonda side, while 24 went to the new Warangal district.

Checking an 03 vehicle

If the RC address says Warangal but the plate shows 03, the vehicle may predate the split. Vahan will show the current registering office.

TS 05 which district?

TS 05 is Nalgonda district, registered at Nalgonda with a unit at Miryalaguda. The pre-2014 code was AP 24. Nalgonda was later trimmed when Suryapet and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri became districts with codes 29 and 30.

Miryalaguda under 05

Miryalaguda is a large town in the district’s south, and vehicles registered at its unit still carry 05.

Older plates

Bhongir or Suryapet cars bought before 2016 may show 05 or AP 24, because those towns were part of Nalgonda then.

TS 22 which district?

TS 22 is Peddapalli district, registered at Peddapalli with a unit at Ramagundam. The district was created in 2016, mostly from the old Karimnagar district, which used AP 15 and now uses 02.

Ramagundam and the coal belt

Ramagundam, an industrial town on the Godavari, has its own unit, so vehicles registered in that industrial town also carry 22.

Older Karimnagar plates

A Peddapalli vehicle from before 2016 may show 02 or AP 15 instead of 22.

TS 24 which district?

TS 24 is Warangal district, the new district formed during the reorganisation. It should not be confused with 03, which the Warangal office uses for Hanamkonda. Vehicles registered in the present Warangal district receive 24.

TS 24 versus TS 03

Both codes trace back to the single AP 36 Warangal code. Today 24 is the district code and 03 the Hanamkonda one.

Nearby codes

Mahabubabad (26), Jangaon (27) and Bhupalpalle (25) border the area and were all once part of greater Warangal.

TS 25 which district?

TS 25 is Jayashankar Bhupalpally district, with the office at Bhupalpalle. It is one of the 2016 districts, carved mostly from the old Warangal area. The forested east of the state, along the Godavari, falls in this belt.

Mulugu’s later split

Mulugu district was carved out on 17 February 2019 and now has code 37, so some vehicles that once took 25 now register under 37.

Spelling variations

You may see Bhupalpalle, Bhupalpally or Bhupalapalli. They refer to the same office.

The series letters also hint at use: T to Y mark transport vehicles.

TS 27 which district?

TS 27 is Jangaon district, with its office at Jangaon. Formed in 2016, the district sits between Hyderabad and Warangal on the main highway. Most of its area came from the old Warangal district.

Before 27

Vehicles registered here before 2016 usually carry the old Warangal codes, AP 36 or TS 03.

Highway traffic

Because Jangaon sits on the Hyderabad-Warangal road, its plates are common in both cities.

TS 29 which district?

TS 29 is Suryapet district, registered at Suryapet with a unit at Kodad. The district was carved from Nalgonda in 2016, so older vehicles may carry 05 or AP 24.

Kodad unit

Kodad lies on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway close to the Andhra Pradesh border. Vehicles registered there still show 29.

Border traffic

AP-registered vehicles are common in this belt, which is why plate-reading questions come up often here.

TS 30 which district?

TS 30 is Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district, with the office at Bhuvanagiri (also spelt Bhongir). Formed in 2016 mostly from Nalgonda, it borders Medchal-Malkajgiri to the east, making 30 one of TS 08’s direct neighbours.

Close to Hyderabad

Ghatkesar in the TS 08 area is only a short drive from Bhuvanagiri, so both codes are common on the eastern highway.

Older Bhongir plates

Pre-2016 vehicles may carry Nalgonda’s 05 or AP 24.

TS 32 which district?

TS 32 is Wanaparthy district, registered at Wanaparthy with a unit at Pebbair. It was created in 2016, mostly out of the old Mahbubnagar district, which held AP 22 and now uses 06.

Southern Telangana codes

Wanaparthy sits among Nagarkurnool (31), Gadwal (33) and Narayanpet (38), all carved from the greater Mahbubnagar area.

Pebbair unit

Pebbair, near the Krishna river, issues 32 numbers for the southern part of the district.

TS 34 which district?

TS 34 is Vikarabad district, registered at Vikarabad with a unit at Parigi. Vikarabad was carved from Rangareddy in the same 2016 exercise that created Medchal-Malkajgiri, so 34 and 08 are sister codes born from one split.

Before 34

Older Vikarabad vehicles may carry Attapur’s 07 or AP 28, the Rangareddy codes of the time.

Parigi unit

The Parigi unit handles registrations for the district’s southern side under the same 34.

TS 36 which district?

TS 36 is Siddipet district, with its office at Siddipet. Created in 2016 largely from the old Medak district (AP 23, now 35), it borders Medchal-Malkajgiri to the north.

Medak and Siddipet

Medak keeps 35 for its own district, while Siddipet received 36. An older Siddipet car may show AP 23.

Neighbour to TS 08

The Rajiv Highway from Shamirpet runs towards Siddipet, so 36 plates appear often in the TS 08 area.

How do you read a TS vehicle code?

A TS vehicle code has four parts: the state letters (TS or TG), the two-digit office code, one or two series letters, and a four-digit number. In TS 08 EK 1234, 08 is Medchal, EK the series and 1234 the running number.

Series letters with a meaning

In Telangana, letters A to S go to private vehicles and T to Y to transport vehicles. Z is kept for state road transport buses (TGSRTC). A TS 08 U series vehicle is therefore usually commercial.

Paying challans on TS 08 numbers

Traffic e-challans in the Medchal area are searched by the full number. Our TG challan guide explains how.

What does a Telangana RTO number tell you?

A Telangana RTO number tells you the office that first registered the vehicle and, through the series letter, its broad use. It does not tell you the owner’s current address, because the number stays with the vehicle when an owner moves within the state.

What it does not show

The code shows nothing about the owner, the insurance or pending challans. For owner and RC details, see our guide to TS vehicle owner details.

Transfers between districts

An owner who moves from Medchal to Nizamabad keeps the 08 number. Only the address on the RC changes.

TS registration department: who issues the numbers?

The TS registration department people search for is the Telangana Transport Department, which runs the district RTOs, including Medchal. Vehicle registration in the state moved to the national Vahan portal, live from 23 March 2026, so new records sit in the same national database as other states.

What the department handles

Its offices handle new registration, ownership transfer, RC address change, hypothecation entries and fitness checks. The department’s app, RTA m-Wallet, launched in 2016, stores digital RC and licence copies.

Office address and timings

We could not verify the current address, phone or timings for the Medchal, Uppal or Kukatpally units. Check the department site at transport.telangana.gov.in or the Parivahan RTO directory before you visit.

How to confirm a TS 08 vehicle’s office online

Any code table, including ours, is a guide. The registering authority shown on Vahan is the record that counts. These four steps take about two minutes and work for TS, TG and AP numbers alike.

  1. Note the full number. Write down the complete registration number, for example TS 08 followed by the series letters and four digits.
  2. Open a vehicle search. Use the Vahan know-your-vehicle service or the mParivahan app’s RC search.
  3. Enter the number. Type the number without spaces and complete the captcha or OTP step.
  4. Read the registering authority. The result names the office, which for TS 08 should be Medchal or one of its units.

If the office looks wrong

A different office usually means the vehicle was re-registered or transferred. Ask the seller for the RC and any NOC before buying.

Neighbouring codes around TS 08

Medchal-Malkajgiri touches several districts, so plates from these codes are the ones most often seen alongside TS 08. Knowing them helps when you read a plate in north or east Hyderabad.

Ring of neighbours

07 Ranga Reddy (Attapur) lies to the south and west, 15 Sangareddy to the west, 35 Medak and 36 Siddipet to the north, and 30 Yadadri Bhuvanagiri to the east. Hyderabad’s own zones, 09 to 13, sit inside the ring.

Telling them apart quickly

If the plate shows 08 the district is Medchal-Malkajgiri, whatever the street address suggests. Every other number in the ring points to a different district office.

TS 08 which district questions

TS 08 is which district?

TS 08 is Medchal-Malkajgiri district. The main registering office is at Medchal, with units at Uppal Kalan and Kukatpally.

Is TS 08 a Hyderabad number?

It is a Hyderabad-area number but not a Hyderabad district code. Medchal, Uppal and Kukatpally lie inside the city's urban spread, yet belong to Medchal-Malkajgiri district.

Is TS 08 Uppal or Medchal?

Both. Medchal is listed as the main office and Uppal Kalan as a sub-agency of the same code, so vehicles from either counter carry 08.

What is TG 08?

TG 08 is the same Medchal office under Telangana's new state letters. New registrations from March 2024 get TG; older ones stay TS.

Which code did Uppal use before TS 08?

Before 2014 the Uppal side of the old Rangareddy district used AP 29, while Attapur used AP 28.

TS 07 or TS 08: which is Ranga Reddy?

TS 07 (Attapur) is Ranga Reddy district. TS 08 went to Medchal-Malkajgiri when that district was carved out of Rangareddy in 2016.

Do I need to change my TS 08 plate to TG 08?

No. The change applies to new registrations. Altering TS to TG on an old plate yourself makes it a tampered plate.

Where can I find the TS 08 office address?

We do not list an address we could not verify. Check the Telangana Transport Department site or the Parivahan RTO directory for the current Medchal, Uppal and Kukatpally office details.

How many RTO codes does Telangana have?

The list we used runs from 01 to 38. Code 14 is shown as reserved for Hyderabad with no separate office.
