WB 20 RTO code decoded, with every West Bengal code from WB 01 to WB 99
The WB 20 RTO code belongs to the Alipore office in South 24 Parganas, which used it for private vehicles. That series is now closed: Alipore issues one shared series beginning WB 19P to cars, bikes and commercial vehicles alike. Existing WB 20 plates stay valid for life. West Bengal codes run from WB 01 (Kolkata, Beltala) to WB 99 (Kandi).
Key takeaways
- WB 20 = Alipore, private vehicles, South 24 Parganas. WB 19 was Alipore's commercial code, and both now feed the common WB 19P series.
- West Bengal has 99 codes, WB 01 to WB 99, for 23 districts, because most offices hold an odd commercial and an even private number.
- Kolkata's main offices: WB 01 to WB 04 Beltala (PVD), WB 05/06 Kasba, WB 07/08 Salt Lake and WB 09/10 Behala.
- WB 11 is Howrah (commercial), WB 25 and WB 26 are Barasat, and WB 96 is Baruipur.
- Check any WB number free on Vahan or mParivahan; the public result masks the owner's name.
- Our code list comes from secondary sources, so confirm a specific vehicle on Vahan before relying on it.

What is the WB 20 RTO code?
The WB 20 RTO code is the number West Bengal gave to the Alipore registering office for private vehicles. Alipore is the headquarters of South 24 Parganas district, on the southern edge of Kolkata. Private cars, scooters and motorcycles registered there carried WB 20 until the series closed.

WB 20 and WB 19 were a pair
Alipore held two numbers. WB 19 was for commercial vehicles such as taxis, goods carriers and buses, and WB 20 was for privately used vehicles.
Why did Alipore stop issuing WB 20 numbers?
Alipore stopped because the West Bengal transport department merged each office’s private and commercial codes into one running series. The published RTO list states that WB 20 was discontinued and replaced by the series starting WB 19P, which now covers private and commercial vehicles registered at Alipore.
What WB 19P means
The office kept its lower number, 19, and moved to a new series letter, P. A car registered at Alipore today might read WB 19P followed by four digits. The letter P is simply the point the series had reached, not an abbreviation for “private”.
No date published for the switch
We did not find a dated notice for the exact day Alipore closed WB 20. Rather than guess, we suggest checking the state transport department’s notices if you need the cut-over date for a legal or insurance matter.
Which places fall under the WB 20 office?
The WB 20 office sits in South 24 Parganas, the largest district of West Bengal by area. Its jurisdiction lies within that district, but the district also has other registering offices, so a South 24 Parganas address does not always mean Alipore. Your RC names the exact office.
Alipore Sadar subdivision
The district’s Alipore Sadar subdivision includes the municipalities of Maheshtala, Budge Budge and Pujali and blocks such as Thakurpukur Maheshtala and Bishnupur I and II, with census towns like Joka.
Other offices in the same district
South 24 Parganas also has Baruipur (WB 95 and WB 96), Diamond Harbour (WB 97) and Canning (WB 98). A vehicle from Sonarpur, Diamond Harbour or the Sundarbans fringe may therefore carry one of those codes instead of WB 19 or WB 20.
Are old WB 20 plates still valid?
Yes. Closing a series affects only new registrations. A vehicle already numbered WB 20 keeps that number for its whole life in West Bengal, and the plate, RC and insurance stay valid as long as the usual renewals, tax and fitness rules are met.
You do not need to re-register
Owners sometimes worry that a discontinued code makes their RC outdated. It does not. The registration mark is permanent, and any later work, such as an address change or transfer, keeps the WB 20 number on the new record.
When a WB 20 vehicle leaves the state
If you shift to another state for good, the vehicle is eventually re-registered there with that state’s code, after a no objection certificate from the West Bengal office. Our guide to the no objection certificate explains the paperwork.
What is the West Bengal RTO code?
The West Bengal RTO code is the two-letter mark WB, followed by a two-digit number for the office that registered the vehicle. So WB 02 marks a car once registered at Beltala in Kolkata, and WB 73 marks Siliguri in the north.
State letters versus office number
WB on its own only tells you the state. The two digits after it carry the location. The series letters after those digits only show how far a series has run, and since One RTO One Code they no longer hint at the vehicle type either.
Where the code system comes from
India’s plate format, with a state code, an office number, series letters and a running number, has applied since 1 July 1989 under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. West Bengal adopted the WB prefix within that national system. The RTO and state code hub covers every state.
West Bengal RTO code list: all codes from WB 01 to WB 99
The West Bengal RTO code list we checked runs from WB 01 to WB 99 without gaps. Most offices own two consecutive numbers, an odd one for commercial and an even one for private vehicles, so 99 codes cover the state’s 23 districts.

Codes with notes attached
A few numbers carry quirks. SBSTC buses are registered under WB 39 at Durgapur and NBSTC buses under WB 63 at Cooch Behar. Tehatta registrations appear from WB 52JA, and the WB 44D run is noted as registered at Asansol rather than Kalna.
Is there a West Bengal RTO code list PDF?
We did not find an official West Bengal RTO code list PDF that we could open and verify. Download sites rarely date their files, and many miss the newer common series. The tables on this page can be printed or saved as a PDF from your browser instead.
How to save this list as a PDF
On a phone, open the browser menu, choose Share or Print, and pick “Save as PDF”. On a computer, press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac) and select the PDF printer.
Be wary of old downloads
An older PDF may still show WB 02 or WB 20 as active, or list Canning and Kandi without codes. If a list does not mention series such as WB 01BB, WB 19P or WB 98, it predates recent changes.
How many offices are on the West Bengal RTO list?
The West Bengal RTO list contains roughly fifty registering offices sharing 99 codes. The exact office count depends on whether you count assistant offices, such as Haldia, Ghatal, Arambagh and Tehatta, that issue sub-series under a parent code rather than holding a number of their own.

Why 99 codes for 23 districts
Large districts have several offices, and nearly every office was given two numbers. North 24 Parganas alone has four offices and eight codes, while South 24 Parganas has Alipore, Baruipur, Diamond Harbour and Canning.
Offices with a single code
Katwa (WB 75), Manbazar (WB 80), Canning (WB 98) and Kandi (WB 99) each use one code for all vehicles. Canning’s series begins at WB 98AA, and the list records it under the Canning office from July 2025.
What does One RTO One Code mean for WB codes?
One RTO One Code is the West Bengal transport department’s policy of giving each office a single series for every vehicle class. It ended the old odd and even split. Each office kept one of its numbers and started a fresh letter, which is how WB 20 gave way to WB 19P.

Which new series replaced which pairs
Beltala moved to WB 01BB, Kasba to WB 05B, Salt Lake to WB 07V, Behala to WB 09B, Howrah to WB 11H, Uluberia to WB 13B, Chinsurah to WB 15E, Basirhat to WB 21A, Barrackpore to WB 23H, Barasat to WB 25N, Siliguri to WB 73K and Baruipur to WB 95C.
What it means for a plate reader
Under the old system, an even number hinted at a private vehicle. That shortcut no longer works for new registrations. Use the plate colour instead: white for private and yellow for commercial.
What is the WB 01 RTO code?
The WB 01 RTO code belongs to the Beltala office in Kolkata district. It started as Beltala’s two-wheeler code. From the series WB 01BB onwards, it became the common code for all private and commercial vehicles registered at Beltala, replacing the separate WB 02 and WB 03 numbers.
WB 01 in daily traffic
Because Beltala is one of the oldest and busiest Kolkata offices, WB 01 is among the codes most often seen on bikes and scooters in the city.
Reading a WB 01BB plate
A number such as WB 01BB 1234 can be a car, a bike or a commercial vehicle, because the series is shared. The plate colour and the vehicle class on Vahan tell you which.
What is the WB 02 RTO code?
The WB 02 RTO code was Beltala’s number for private four-wheelers in Kolkata. Cars registered privately at Beltala carried WB 02 for many years. The list marks it discontinued, since WB 01BB now covers every vehicle type at the office, cars included.
Why WB 02 is so familiar
For decades, WB 02 was effectively the Kolkata car code. Plenty of older family cars registered in the city still wear it, so used-car buyers and curious drivers still look it up.
Is the WB02 RTO series still running?
No. The WB02 RTO series is closed for new registrations, according to the RTO list. Existing WB 02 cars keep their numbers, and transfers or address changes keep the same mark. New private cars registered at Beltala now receive a number from the WB 01BB series.
Fancy or choice numbers under WB 02
Some owners ask whether they can still pick a WB 02 choice number. As the series no longer issues fresh numbers, a choice number would come from the active Beltala series instead.
Same office, new prefix
A buyer who sees a recent WB 01BB car and an old WB 02 car from the same street should not be confused: both were very likely registered at Beltala, only in different eras.
What does the WB 03 RTO code stand for?
The WB 03 RTO code was used at Beltala for commercial goods carriages: trucks, tempos and other goods vehicles registered in Kolkata. Like WB 02, it is discontinued, and new goods vehicles at Beltala join the WB 01BB series with a yellow commercial plate.
WB 03 and WB 04 side by side
WB 04 was Beltala’s code for commercial passenger vehicles such as taxis and buses.
What is the WB 05 RTO code?
The WB 05 RTO code is the Kasba office’s commercial number, in Kolkata district. Under One RTO One Code, the series starting WB 05B is now Kasba’s shared series for both commercial and private vehicles, so a new car registered at Kasba may carry WB 05.
Kasba’s two numbers
Kasba held WB 05 for commercial and WB 06 for private vehicles. After the merge, WB 05 continues and WB 06 has stopped.
Which office issues WB 06 RTO numbers?
WB 06 RTO numbers came from two offices over time. The first letters, WB 06 up to WB 06J, were issued at Beltala for private four-wheelers. From WB 06K the series belonged to Kasba, again for private vehicles, until it closed.
Why one code moved between offices
Codes in Kolkata were sometimes handed from one office to another as new offices opened. The early WB 06 block predates Kasba, which is why a WB 06A car may be recorded at Beltala while a WB 06P car belongs to Kasba.
Check the office on the record
Since the letters alone decide the office here, look at the registering authority field on the RC or in a Vahan search rather than assuming Kasba.
Is the WB 06 RTO code still in use?
The WB 06 RTO code is no longer issued for new vehicles. The RTO list notes that the series was discontinued after WB 06AC, with Kasba moving to the common WB 05B series. Every WB 06 plate already on the road remains valid and keeps its number.
What is the WB 07 RTO code?
The WB 07 RTO code is used by the Salt Lake (Bidhannagar) office for commercial vehicles and, since the merge, for all vehicles under the common WB 07V series. The RTO list files it under Kolkata district. Salt Lake’s private code was WB 08.
Where to read more on Salt Lake
Our page on the Salt Lake RTO covers that office’s services and its WB 07V and WB 08 history in detail, so this section stays brief.
What happened to the WB07 RTO two-wheeler series?
The early WB07 RTO numbers, from WB 07 up to WB 07H, were issued by the Kolkata RTO for two-wheelers, before Salt Lake took over the code. Salt Lake’s commercial run began at WB 07J, was discontinued after WB 07K and was then replaced by WB 07V.
A bike with WB 07 is not always from Salt Lake
An old motorcycle with a WB 07C or WB 07F plate was probably registered in central Kolkata, not Bidhannagar.
What does WB08 RTO mean on a plate?
WB08 RTO refers to Salt Lake’s former private-vehicle code. Cars and bikes registered privately at Salt Lake carried WB 08 until the series ended after WB 08S. Some government vehicles were registered under WB 08T, so that sub-series is not an ordinary private mark.
What replaced WB 08
New Salt Lake registrations, private and commercial, now use WB 07V.
What is the WB 11 RTO?
The WB 11 RTO is the Howrah office, which used WB 11 for commercial vehicles and WB 12 for private ones. Under One RTO One Code, both were replaced by the series starting WB 11H, so new cars, bikes and commercial vehicles registered in Howrah now carry WB 11.
Old WB 11 versus new WB 11H
An older WB 11 plate on a yellow background is a Howrah commercial vehicle such as a taxi or truck. A newer WB 11H plate may be on a white private car, because the series is now shared.
WB 11 in the wider Howrah district
Howrah district has a second office at Uluberia, so not every vehicle from the district carries WB 11.
What is the Howrah RTO code?
The Howrah RTO code is WB 11, with WB 12 as the old private number. Howrah district’s second office, Uluberia, used WB 13 and WB 14, now merged into the series starting WB 13B. Together these four codes cover vehicles registered across Howrah district.

Two-wheelers in the WB 14 series
The list records a quirk: plates from WB 14E to WB 14L were two-wheelers registered at the Howrah office, even though WB 14 was Uluberia’s private code. Uluberia’s own series began at WB 14K.
What is the WB 25 RTO code?
The WB 25 RTO code belongs to Barasat in North 24 Parganas, originally for commercial vehicles. Barasat’s private code was WB 26. Both were replaced by the series starting WB 25N, which now serves private and commercial vehicles registered at Barasat.
Barasat’s place in North 24 Parganas
North 24 Parganas has four offices: Basirhat (WB 21/22), Barrackpore (WB 23/24), Barasat (WB 25/26) and Bangaon (WB 27/28). Barasat is the district headquarters, so many district residents hold WB 25 or WB 26 numbers.
WB 25N for new vehicles
A new scooter or car registered at Barasat today would start WB 25N or a later letter.
WB 26 which district?
WB 26 is North 24 Parganas district, issued by the Barasat office for private vehicles. The series ran until WB 26CC, after which Barasat switched to the common WB 25N series. A WB 26 car or bike already on the road keeps its number.
Not to be confused with WB 20 or WB 22
WB 20 is Alipore, south of Kolkata, while WB 26 is Barasat, to the north-east. WB 22 is Basirhat’s private code, though the WB 22U run was registered at Alipore, one of the odd cross-office cases in the list.
WB 96 which RTO?
WB 96 is the Baruipur office in South 24 Parganas, for private vehicles. Its commercial partner was WB 95. Baruipur now uses one common series starting WB 95C for all vehicles. The town also hosts the district’s Zilla Parishad.
WB 96 and WB 20 share a district
Both Baruipur and Alipore serve South 24 Parganas. A family in Sonarpur or Garia may hold a WB 96 car while relatives nearer Alipore have WB 20, depending on which office their address falls under.
What is the PVD Kolkata RTO code?
PVD Kolkata is the name many people use for the Beltala transport office, said to stand for Public Vehicles Department. Its codes are WB 01 to WB 04, and new registrations use the common WB 01BB series. We could not confirm the PVD name from an official page.
What to search for
On Vahan and Sarathi, the office appears under its official name for Kolkata or Beltala rather than “PVD”. If you cannot find PVD in a drop-down, choose the Kolkata or Beltala office listed for West Bengal.
What is the Kolkata RTO number?
There is no single Kolkata RTO number. Kolkata district is served by several offices: Beltala (WB 01 to WB 04), Kasba (WB 05/06), Salt Lake (WB 07/08) and Behala (WB 09/10). Alipore (WB 19/20) and Howrah (WB 11/12) sit just outside the district boundary.

Which Kolkata code you will get
Your registering office depends on the address on your documents and the office the dealer or portal assigns. Since the merge, a new car could start WB 01BB, WB 05B, WB 07V or WB 09B.
If you need a phone number
We did not find a verified helpline or office phone number for the Kolkata offices. Use the West Bengal Transport Department website or the Parivahan RTO directory for current contact details.
How do you read a Kolkata number plate?
A Kolkata number plate reads in four parts: WB, the two-digit office number, one or two series letters and a four-digit running number. In WB 02AB 1234, WB means West Bengal, 02 means Beltala’s old private-car desk, AB is the series and 1234 the vehicle’s place in it.

The office number is the clue
Only the two digits point to a place. In Kolkata, 01 to 10 are the city offices, while 19 or 20 means Alipore and 11 or 12 means Howrah.
Series letters are just a counter
When a series reaches 9999, the letters move on, from A to B and so on, and later to two letters.
How do you trace a Kolkata vehicle number?
To trace a Kolkata vehicle number, read the office code first, then confirm with a Vahan search. The code tells you which office most likely registered it. The Vahan record confirms the registering authority, vehicle class, fuel type and the validity of insurance and fitness.
When the code and the record disagree
Because of cross-office runs such as WB 06A to WB 06J (Beltala) and WB 07C (Kolkata two-wheelers), the code alone can mislead. The registering authority on the record is the final word.
For accidents or complaints
If you need the owner for an accident or a hit-and-run, report it to the police.
Which codes appear on a Kolkata bike number?
A Kolkata bike number most often starts WB 01, Beltala’s long-running two-wheeler code. Older bikes may show WB 07 (up to WB 07H) from the Kolkata RTO. Newer bikes can carry any of the city’s common series, such as WB 01BB, WB 05B, WB 07V or WB 09B.
Bikes from the suburbs
A bike from Howrah may read WB 11H or show the WB 14E to WB 14L run, while one from Barasat may read WB 25N. Bikes from south of the city often carry WB 19P or WB 95C.
What does WB passing mean?
WB passing is everyday slang for a vehicle registered in West Bengal, so its plate starts with WB. Dealers and sellers say “WB passing car” to tell out-of-state buyers that the vehicle already holds a West Bengal registration, with the state’s road tax paid.
Why buyers in other states care
A WB passing vehicle used permanently in another state must eventually be re-registered there with the local code.
What does a West Bengal number plate look like?
A West Bengal number plate follows the national design: black characters on a white plate for private vehicles, starting with WB, then the office number, series and running number. Vehicles made from 1 April 2019 come with a high security registration plate fitted by the dealer.
The HSRP features
The high security plate carries a chromium-based hologram, a laser-etched identification number and an “IND” mark in blue. A colour-coded third registration sticker sits on the windscreen. Our HSRP number plate guide covers booking and rules.
Older WB vehicles
Vehicles made before April 2019 may still wear older plates. Whether they must switch depends on state notices, so check the West Bengal transport department for any current order.
What colours does a West Bengal car number plate use?
A West Bengal car number plate uses the colour scheme applied across India. White with black text means private, yellow with black text means commercial, green means electric, black with yellow text means self-drive rental, and red text on yellow marks a temporary registration.

Colour matters more than code now
With One RTO One Code, the even private and odd commercial numbers no longer separate vehicle types. The plate colour is the quickest way to tell a private WB 19P car from a commercial one.
Bike number plate WB: what rules apply?
A bike number plate WB registration follows the same rules as any two-wheeler in India: plates at the front and rear, standard characters and no decoration. New bikes get an HSRP of 20 cm x 10 cm at the rear and 28.5 cm x 4.5 cm at the front, fitted by the dealer.
What is not allowed
Stylised fonts, names, logos or slogans on the plate, and plates that are bent, tinted or hidden, break the rules. Such plates can attract a fine; our WB traffic fine page covers Kolkata penalties.
Lost or damaged bike plate
If a WB bike’s HSRP is damaged, a replacement is booked through the authorised HSRP channel with the RC details.
What does WB no plate mean?
WB no plate is a shortened search, usually typed by people looking for the meaning of a WB number plate, or for the code behind a WB number. It does not refer to a vehicle with no plate. Driving without a valid registration plate is an offence anywhere in India.
What people usually want
Most people typing this want to know which office a WB number belongs to. The code tables above answer that, and a Vahan search confirms it for a specific vehicle.
Bike number check West Bengal: how is it done?
A bike number check West Bengal search uses the same national tools as any vehicle check. Open Know Your Vehicle Details on the Vahan portal, or the mParivahan app, sign in with a mobile one-time password, enter the full WB number and read the result. The service is free.

What a bike check shows
You can see the model, fuel type, registering office, registration date and the validity of insurance and fitness, with the owner’s name partly masked.
When to run one
Run a check before buying a used bike, after an accident or when a bike is left in your locality.
How does a West Bengal vehicle registration search work?
A West Bengal vehicle registration search runs on the national Vahan database, which holds West Bengal’s records alongside every other state’s. There is no separate state search to learn. You use the citizen search on Vahan or mParivahan and enter a WB number.
Steps for the search
- Open the search. Go to Know Your Vehicle Details on the Vahan portal, or open the mParivahan app.
- Sign in. Enter your mobile number and the one-time password sent to it.
- Type the number. Enter the full WB number, such as WB19P1234, with no spaces.
- Pass the captcha. Fill in the verification code shown on screen and submit.
- Read the result. Check the registering office, vehicle class, fuel and validity dates.
Using the result
Compare the record with the vehicle in front of you: model, colour and fuel. Our guide to the vehicle details check covers each field.
Vehicle registration check online West Bengal: what do you need?
For a vehicle registration check online West Bengal search, you need only the full registration number and a mobile phone that can receive a one-time password. No fee, account or documents are needed for the public check. Owners can see more after logging in with their own details.
Number format tips
Type WB, the two-digit office number, the letters and the digits with no spaces or dashes, for example WB20AB1234.
If nothing is found
Very old records sometimes take longer to appear online. If a WB number returns nothing after a careful retry, contact the registering office to have the record checked.
RTO vehicle information WB: what does a lookup show?
An RTO vehicle information WB lookup shows the vehicle’s make and model, fuel type, vehicle class, registration date, the registering office and the validity dates for insurance, fitness and tax where recorded. The owner’s name appears only partly. It is the same data any Indian lookup returns.
Apps and third-party sites
Many apps show the same data with ads. Our page on RTO vehicle information explains what such tools can and cannot show.
Which West Bengal vehicle details are public?
The West Bengal vehicle details open to the public are limited to what helps identify a vehicle: model, class, fuel, office, age and the status of insurance and fitness. Personal data, such as the full name, address and phone number, is withheld from the public search.
What owners can see
Logged in as the owner, you can view and download your own RC details, apply for services and check pending applications on Vahan.
How does West Bengal vehicle registration work?
West Bengal vehicle registration for a new vehicle is usually handled by the dealer. The dealer enters the details on Vahan, collects the registration fee and road tax, and the office allots a number from its current series. You receive the RC, and the HSRP is fitted at delivery.
What you provide
Expect to give identity and address proof, the sale invoice, insurance, and the forms the dealer fills in. The address decides the registering office, and the office decides the code.
Road tax and fees
West Bengal collects road tax at registration under its own rates. Our page on road tax payment in West Bengal covers the slabs, so we do not repeat figures here.
Moving to Bengal from another state
A vehicle brought from another state for long-term use is re-registered in West Bengal after a no objection certificate from the old state. Workers who move often may consider BH registration, which avoids re-registration.
Which office handles your WB registration vehicle?
For a WB registration vehicle, the office that holds the record is the one printed on the RC as the registering authority. That office handles later work on the vehicle, such as transfers, hypothecation changes and duplicate RCs, even if you have moved nearby, until the record is shifted.
Finding it fast
Read the RC, or run a Vahan search and look at the office field.

Moving within the state does not change your number. You apply for an address change on Vahan, and the record moves to the office for your new address while the WB code stays.
What is the West Bengal motor vehicle department?
Searches for the West Bengal motor vehicle department usually mean the state Transport Department, which runs the RTOs and assistant RTOs across West Bengal. It handles registration, licences, permits and road tax at state level, while applications themselves run on the national Vahan and Sarathi portals.
Where the offices fit
Each code on this page belongs to one office under the department, from Beltala in Kolkata to Kandi in Murshidabad.
Getting official information

WB motor vehicle: which laws govern it?
A WB motor vehicle is governed by the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, which apply across India. West Bengal adds its own rules and its own motor vehicle tax law for matters the Act leaves to the states, such as road tax rates.
Central rules you will meet
Registration, plates, HSRP, licences, insurance and most penalties come from the central Act and Rules.
State rules you will meet
Road tax, some fees and the compounding amounts for certain traffic offences are set by the state. Always confirm current West Bengal amounts on official channels.
What should you check before buying a WB car?
Before buying a WB car, confirm that the plate, RC and Vahan record agree, and that insurance, tax and pollution certificates are valid. Check for a loan entry (hypothecation) and pending challans. For a car leaving Bengal, plan for the NOC and re-registration in your state.

Checks that take five minutes
Run the number on Vahan, match the chassis and engine numbers on the car with the RC, and look up challans on the e-challan portal.
Transfer after purchase
Ownership transfer is done on Vahan with the seller’s and buyer’s forms. The car keeps its WB number. The RTO codes guide links to every state if the car is moving elsewhere.
