Road tax: how it is charged, paid and checked online

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 24 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

Road tax is a state tax on owning and using a motor vehicle, set under each state's Motor Vehicles Taxation Act. Private cars and bikes usually pay a one-time tax at registration, while taxis, buses and trucks pay quarterly or yearly. You can pay it online on Vahan citizen services or your state portal, then check the tax status and print the receipt.

Key takeaways

  • Road tax rates are set by each state, so the same car can cost different amounts in Delhi, Bihar or Haryana.
  • Most private vehicles pay one-time (lifetime) tax, usually covering 15 years; commercial vehicles pay by period.
  • Pay on Vahan citizen services or your state transport portal, and keep the tax receipt PDF.
  • If you keep a vehicle in another state for more than 12 months, you must re-register it and pay that state's tax.
  • Professional tax is not a transport tax; it is paid to the state commercial tax department.

What does road tax mean for a vehicle owner?

Road tax is the tax a state charges for registering and running a motor vehicle on its roads. It is paid to the state transport department, not to the Centre, and it is separate from toll, GST, insurance and the registration fee. Without valid tax, a vehicle cannot legally be used on public roads.

What the tax pays for

Road tax is general state revenue. It funds road building, repairs, transport offices and enforcement. Unlike a toll, it is not linked to any one road or trip, so you pay it whether you drive daily or rarely.

Who has to pay it

Every vehicle owner whose vehicle is registered in the state pays it, from a scooter to a truck. A few classes, such as some government vehicles, ambulances or electric vehicles in certain states, get full or partial exemptions.

How to pay road tax online?

To answer how to pay road tax online, use the Vahan citizen services page, which most states now use for tax. You enter the vehicle number, confirm it with an OTP, check the amount and pay. The receipt is generated at once. The steps below follow the usual flow.

  1. Open Vahan citizen services. Choose your state and RTO, or start from the vehicle number box on the home page.
  2. Enter the vehicle number. Type the registration number and select the tax payment option.
  3. Verify with OTP. Add the last chassis digits and the mobile number linked to the RC, then enter the OTP.
  4. Check the tax details. Confirm the tax mode, the period, the amount and any penalty.
  5. Pay and save the receipt. Pay by net banking, card or UPI where offered, then download the receipt.
Five steps for road tax online payment on the Vahan citizen services portal
The same flow works for one-time, quarterly and yearly vehicle tax.

What you need before you start

Keep the RC, the chassis number, the mobile number registered with the RTO and a working payment method ready. If the registered mobile is old, update it first, because the OTP goes only to that number.

When to pay at the RTO instead

Go to the counter if the record shows the wrong vehicle class, if the tax is under dispute, or if your state has not moved that tax type online. Carry the RC, insurance and any earlier receipts.

Vahan online payment: which taxes and fees can you pay?

A Vahan online payment covers most money you owe your RTO for a registered vehicle: road tax, extra tax after a change of use, green tax where it applies, and fees for RC services. Licence fees are paid on Sarathi instead. The table shows where each common payment goes.

What you are payingWhere to pay it

Vahan e payment and vahan 4 payment

Vahan e payment and vahan 4 payment both mean paying through Vahan 4, the current national registration software run by NIC. People also search e vahan tax payment or vahan online tax payment; all of these lead to the same citizen services page.

Vahan fee payment is not the same as tax

A vahan fee payment is a service charge for a task, such as issuing a duplicate RC. Tax is a levy for using the vehicle. Both can appear in one transaction, so read each line before you pay. Our online payment guide covers fee-only payments.

Can you pay mParivahan vehicle tax in the app?

The mParivahan vehicle tax option depends on the app version and your state. The app mainly links you to Vahan services, a virtual RC and challan checks, and some versions open the tax payment page inside the app. If you do not see it, use the Vahan site in your phone browser.

Using the app for tax status

Even without a tax button, the virtual RC in the mParivahan app shows registration details. Tax validity may appear for some states, but the Vahan site remains the place to confirm it.

M wallet RC and the virtual RC

M wallet RC is an informal name for the virtual RC kept in mParivahan or DigiLocker. It is a valid digital copy of your RC, but it is not proof that tax is paid. Keep the tax receipt separately.

How to pay car tax online for a new or old car?

To pay car tax online, first see whether you owe anything. A new car’s tax is usually collected by the dealer at registration, so you rarely pay it yourself. You pay online mainly for a commercial car, a car brought from another state, or a car whose earlier period has ended.

New car from a dealer

The dealer adds the one-time tax to the on-road price and pays it while registering the car through Vahan. Ask for the tax receipt with the RC papers.

Older or transferred car

For a used car bought within the same state, the paid tax normally carries over. For a car brought from another state, pay the new state’s tax when you re-register it.

Who collects motor vehicle tax and why?

Motor vehicle tax is collected by the state transport department, through its RTOs or online. The Constitution lets states tax vehicles, so each state passes its own taxation Act and rate schedule. MoRTH and NIC run the Vahan software, but they do not set your state’s rates.

Why rates differ across states

Each state decides its slabs, exemptions and penalties. One state may charge a flat amount for bikes, another a share of the price. That is why a national figure cannot answer every question about vehicle road tax.

How is road tax worked out on a new vehicle?

Road tax on a new vehicle is usually a percentage of the ex-showroom or invoice price, with slabs that rise as the price rises. Some states also use engine size, seats or weight. Fuel type and owner type change the rate. The checklist below shows the main factors. For an estimate, our road tax calculator guide explains the maths.

Checklist of factors states use to work out vehicle tax on a new car
Change any one factor and the state slab you fall into can change.
Vehicle typeHow tax is usually chargedWhen it is paid
Private carShare of price, by price slab and fuelOnce at registration
Private two-wheelerShare of price or by engine sizeOnce at registration
Taxi or cabBy seats or a fixed rate set by the stateQuarterly or yearly in many states
Goods vehicleBy gross weight or load capacityQuarterly or yearly
BusBy seats and route or permit typeQuarterly or yearly
Source: Rules and regulations of road tax in India (BankBazaar). Checked October 2026.

Price is the starting point

The base is normally the price before insurance and registration charges. A car priced just above a slab boundary can pay noticeably more tax than one just below it.

Fuel and owner type change the rate

Many states charge diesel vehicles more and electric vehicles less. A vehicle registered to a company often pays a higher rate than one owned by an individual.

How much is road tax in India?

There is no single answer to how much is road tax in India, because each state sets its own rates. For private cars, most states charge a one-time tax of a few per cent to over ten per cent of the price. Two-wheelers usually pay less. Commercial vehicles pay by period.

Examples from verified state slabs

In Delhi, an individual’s petrol car up to ₹6 lakh pays 4%. In Bihar, a new car between ₹1 lakh and ₹8 lakh pays 9%. Both slab tables appear further down this page.

Where to find your state’s figure

Use our state guides: Haryana road tax, Maharashtra road tax, road tax in Karnataka, road tax in Kerala and Punjab road tax.

How much is my road tax?

To find out how much is my road tax, check the dealer’s quotation or invoice for a new vehicle, or the Vahan record for an existing one. The online tax screen calculates the amount due from your vehicle’s details, so you do not need to work it out yourself.

Quick answers card on how to check road tax online and who sets the rate
Four answers that settle most questions at the RTO counter.

For a vehicle you are buying

Ask the dealer for a written break-up of ex-showroom price, road tax, registration fee and insurance. Compare the tax with your state’s slab.

For a vehicle you already own

Enter the vehicle number on Vahan citizen services and open the tax payment screen. It shows the due amount and the period before you pay anything.

Is life time tax for car really for life?

A life time tax for car sounds permanent, but in most states it covers a fixed term, usually 15 years from registration. After that, the owner renews the registration and pays a further tax for each extra period, often five years at a time. The rules differ by state.

Comparison of one-time lifetime motor vehicle tax and periodic tax paid by commercial vehicles
Private vehicles usually pay once; transport vehicles keep paying by period.

One-time tax and lifetime tax

States use both names. “One-time” stresses that you pay once; “lifetime” suggests the tax covers the useful life of the vehicle. Either way, read your state’s rule for the exact term.

Road tax renewal amount

The road tax renewal amount after 15 years is set by your state, often as a fixed sum by vehicle class. The Vahan tax screen shows it when the renewal falls due. Ask the RTO if no amount appears.

What is MV tax? MV tax full form explained

The MV tax full form is motor vehicle tax, the formal name for road tax in most state laws. You will see “MV tax” on receipts, RTO forms and Vahan screens. An MV tax payment is simply a road tax payment, made online or at the RTO.

MV tax online payment

MV tax online payment runs through Vahan in most states. A few states still run their own portals for some vehicle classes. Our MV tax meaning page explains the related terms.

What is token tax or a tax token?

Token tax is the name some states use for periodic road tax, and the tax token is the receipt that proves it is paid for a given period. The term is common in West Bengal, Assam and Himachal Pradesh, especially for commercial vehicles. Our road tax token guide covers renewal.

Do's and don'ts for keeping a vehicle tax token valid and avoiding late penalties
A valid token is your proof that the period's tax is paid.

Tax token online payment

Tax token online payment works like any Vahan tax payment: enter the vehicle number, choose the period and pay. The receipt is the new token.

Late payment penalties

If tax is not paid when the period starts, states add a penalty under their taxation Act. The amount depends on the state and the delay, and the Vahan screen adds it automatically.

How to check the road tax?

The simplest way for how to check the road tax status is the Vahan citizen services page. Enter your vehicle number and open the tax option, and the screen shows the tax mode, the period paid and anything still due. Your RC may also show a tax validity date.

Road tax check before buying a used vehicle

A road tax check before buying a used car protects you from unpaid dues. Ask the seller for the latest receipt and match it with the Vahan record.

People who search road tax parivahan usually want the same Vahan check. The national parivahan.gov.in site links to Vahan, where your state’s tax record is kept. Our tax checker page lists other ways.

How can I check my road tax and tax status?

If you are asking how can I check my road tax, look at three places: the Vahan tax screen, your latest tax receipt and the RC. The tax status tells you whether tax is paid up to date, in arrears, or one-time. The table compares the options.

Where you checkWhat it tells you
Vahan tax screenTax mode, period paid, any amount due
Latest tax receiptAmount paid, period and transaction number
RC or virtual RCTax mode or valid-up-to date in many states
RTO counterFull record, including disputed amounts

Check vehicle tax online in two minutes

To check vehicle tax online, you need only the vehicle number and the OTP sent to the registered mobile. This is also how you check tax status after a payment.

Vehicle tax details on the record

The vehicle tax details usually show the vehicle class, tax mode, last payment date and valid-up-to date. If any field looks wrong, correct it at the RTO before paying.

How to do a vehicle tax receipt download?

A vehicle tax receipt download happens at the end of every online payment. The receipt opens as a PDF with the transaction number, period and amount. Save it to your phone and keep a printed copy with the vehicle papers, especially for a transport vehicle.

Road tax receipt contents

A road tax receipt lists the owner’s name, vehicle number, tax mode, period, amount, penalty if any, and the bank reference. Check each field before you close the page.

If the receipt did not appear

If money was debited but no receipt appeared, wait. A pending transaction may take 1-2 hours to settle, depending on the state. Then use the pending transaction check under the Status menu.

How do you print tax receipt again?

To print tax receipt copies later, open the Status menu on Vahan citizen services and choose the receipt reprint option. Enter the vehicle number and the chassis digits asked for, select the transaction, and download the receipt again. The steps are shown below.

Steps to reprint a vehicle tax receipt from the Vahan status menu as a PDF
A reprint carries the same transaction number as the first receipt.

Road tax payment receipt for an old payment

A road tax payment receipt from an earlier year can usually be reprinted the same way. Very old counter payments may not be on Vahan; ask the RTO for a copy.

Vehicle tax receipt as proof

A vehicle tax receipt is accepted by officers as proof of payment. It carries a transaction number they can verify against the Vahan record.

What is a road tax challan?

A road tax challan can mean two different things. It is either the payment form generated when you pay tax at a bank or RTO, or a penalty challan issued for driving with unpaid tax. Check which one you have before acting.

Payment challan

Some states still generate a challan form for paying tax at a bank. Online Vahan payments replace this with an instant receipt.

Penalty for unpaid tax

If officers find a vehicle running without valid tax, they can detain it and the state can recover the tax with a penalty. Traffic fines are checked on the e-Challan portal.

What is a vehicle tax payment penalty for paying late?

A late vehicle tax payment draws a penalty set by your state’s taxation Act. It usually rises with the length of the delay and can be a share of the tax due. The Vahan screen calculates the penalty when you pay, so it is never added afterwards.

Who is most affected

Commercial vehicles feel penalties most because they pay tax every quarter or year. Private vehicles mostly face them after the one-time period ends.

Which vehicle road tax payment mistakes should you avoid?

The common vehicle road tax payment mistakes are paying twice after a delay, using look-alike websites and ignoring a wrong vehicle class. Each costs time or money. The fixes below cover the problems readers report most often.

Common vahan tax payment errors with fixes for pending payments and missing receipts
Never pay twice before the first transaction has been checked.

Pay only on official pages

Pay on Vahan pages ending in parivahan.gov.in or on your state’s .gov.in transport site. Links in SMS or WhatsApp messages can be fake.

Do not pay twice

If a payment is pending, check its status before you try again. A second payment may take weeks to refund through the bank.

Car tax in India: what private car owners pay

Car tax in India for a private car is almost always a one-time payment at registration, worked out on the car’s price. The rate depends on the state, the price slab, the fuel and whether the owner is a person or a company. Electric cars often get relief.

Car road tax on the invoice

Car road tax is listed on the on-road price breakdown. Check that the dealer used the right price and fuel type, because the slab follows from them.

Car tax for company-owned cars

Many states charge companies a higher rate. Delhi, for example, applies higher slabs to company cars than to cars owned by individuals.

How is bike tax charged?

Bike tax is road tax on a two-wheeler. Most states charge it once at registration, either as a share of the price or by engine capacity. It is usually lower than car tax. The tax price for a scooter or bike is shown in the dealer’s on-road quote.

Two-wheeler slabs

States often have two or three slabs for two-wheelers, such as low-price commuter bikes and costlier models. Check your state guide for the current rates.

Electric scooters

Many states exempt or reduce road tax for electric two-wheelers under their EV policies. See our EV subsidy guide for current schemes.

How is commercial vehicle tax charged?

Commercial vehicle tax is usually paid quarterly, half-yearly or yearly rather than once. The amount depends on seats for passenger vehicles and on weight or load for goods vehicles. Some states also add special taxes for vehicles with tourist or national permits.

Online truck tax

Online truck tax is paid on Vahan like any other tax, by vehicle number. Goods vehicles running on a national permit also pay the permit’s authorisation fee.

Rajasthan commercial vehicles

Rajasthan runs commercial tax through Vahan and its transport portal. Our guide to online road tax payment Rajasthan covers commercial vehicles there.

What is state tax for taxi?

State tax for taxi is the road tax a taxi pays in the state where it is registered. Taxis are transport vehicles, so most states charge them periodically, often by seating capacity. When a taxi enters another state, it may also owe that state’s tax unless its permit covers it.

Taxis on tourist permits

Taxis with an all India tourist permit pay a permit fee that replaces many separate state taxes.

Taxis without such a permit

A taxi on a state permit pays entry or checkpost tax when it crosses into another state. The checkpost service on Vahan calculates the amount.

Taxi licence: what do you need to drive a taxi?

A taxi licence is not one document. You need a driving licence that covers the vehicle, a commercial registration with a yellow plate, and a permit from the RTO. Some states and cab companies also ask for a driver badge or police verification.

Taxi driver license rules

On a taxi driver license, the Supreme Court ruled on 6 November 2024 that an LMV licence holder may drive a transport vehicle up to 7,500 kg. Heavier vehicles need the extra transport endorsement. See our PSV badge guide for state badge rules.

Vehicle license registration

Vehicle license registration usually means registering the vehicle (RC) rather than the driver. For a taxi, the RC must be in the transport category, with tax paid as a transport vehicle.

How does Uttarakhand taxi tax work?

Uttarakhand taxi tax has two parts. Taxis registered in Uttarakhand pay the state’s periodic tax for transport vehicles. Taxis from other states pay entry tax or checkpost charges when they come in, unless an all-India permit covers them. Our Uttarakhand road tax page has state details.

The Uttarakhand state tax for taxi visitors is paid online through the Vahan checkpost service before entering. Keep the receipt for checks on hill routes.

Green cess announcements

Uttarakhand has announced a green cess on vehicles from other states, with rates reported differently over time. Check the Uttarakhand transport department’s current notice before you travel.

Other state vehicle tax: when is it due?

Other state vehicle tax arises in two cases. A vehicle on a short visit, mainly a transport vehicle, may owe entry tax. A vehicle kept in another state for more than 12 months must be re-registered there under Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, and the new state’s tax paid.

Timeline for other state vehicle tax when you shift a car to a new state
Section 47 sets the 12-month limit; refund rules differ by state.

Other state road tax after a move

Other state road tax is usually charged pro rata for the remaining years. You then apply to your old state for a refund of unused tax. Track your NOC first; our NOC status guide explains how.

Other state tax for trips

For trips, other state tax mostly applies to transport vehicles. The check post tax guide covers how the amount is worked out.

Avoiding re-registration with BH series

Eligible employees can choose a BH number plate, which avoids re-registration when moving. Its tax is paid two years at a time.

What is Haryana checkpost tax?

Haryana checkpost tax is the entry tax that some vehicles registered outside Haryana pay when they enter the state, mainly transport vehicles such as taxis, buses and trucks. It is paid online through the Vahan checkpost service. Private cars on short visits usually do not pay it.

When it applies

The tax depends on the vehicle class, the permit and how long the vehicle stays. A taxi with an all-India permit is treated differently from one with a state permit.

Paying before you enter

Pay before reaching the border and keep the receipt on your phone. Officers can check the receipt number against the record.

Rajasthan border tax: who pays it?

Rajasthan border tax is paid mainly by transport vehicles from other states entering Rajasthan, such as tourist taxis and buses. The amount depends on the vehicle type, seats and duration. It is paid online through the Vahan checkpost service before the trip.

Rajasthan tax for local vehicles

Is there a Telangana to Andhra Pradesh border tax for car trips?

The Telangana to Andhra Pradesh border tax for car trips mainly concerns transport vehicles. After the state split, both states began charging entry tax on each other’s transport vehicles in 2015. A private car on a short visit generally pays no entry tax, but confirm the current rule before travelling.

For taxis and buses

A Telangana taxi or bus going into Andhra Pradesh should check whether its permit covers the trip, and pay any entry tax on the Vahan checkpost service.

For a car that moves for good

If your car moves from Telangana to Andhra Pradesh for more than 12 months, re-register it there and pay Andhra Pradesh tax.

What is Delhi road tax for private cars?

Professional tax receipt download: is it a transport tax?

Professional tax receipt download is not a transport service. Professional tax is a state tax on employment and trades, collected by the state commercial tax department. RTOs and Vahan do not handle it. Our profession tax challan reprint page explains where to get receipts.

Why it gets confused with road tax

Road tax questions

Is road tax paid every year in India?

Not for most private cars and bikes. They usually pay a one-time tax at registration. Taxis, buses, trucks and some other transport vehicles pay quarterly, half-yearly or yearly, depending on the state.

Can I pay road tax for a vehicle registered in another state?

You pay tax to the state where the vehicle is registered. For trips into another state, a transport vehicle may owe entry or checkpost tax there. If you shift a vehicle for more than 12 months, re-register it and pay the new state's tax.

Where is road tax shown on my RC?

Many RCs show a tax valid up to date or the words one-time or lifetime tax. The same detail appears on the Vahan record when you check the tax status online.

Is road tax included in the on-road price of a new car?

Yes. The dealer's on-road price normally includes road tax, registration charges and insurance. Ask for the tax to be shown as a separate line on the quotation.

Can I get a road tax refund if I sell my car to someone in another state?

The tax stays with the vehicle, so the buyer usually re-registers it in the new state. Refund rules for the unused part of a one-time tax differ by state; ask the original RTO.

Do electric vehicles pay road tax?

Many states give electric vehicles a full or partial road tax exemption, often for a limited period. Check your state's current EV policy before you buy.

What happens if I drive with unpaid road tax?

The vehicle can be stopped and detained, and the state can charge the tax with a penalty. Some RTO services may also be blocked until the dues are cleared.

Is there GST on road tax?

No. Road tax is a separate state levy. GST is charged on the vehicle's sale price, and road tax is then worked out under the state's own rules.

Can I pay road tax in cash?

Most RTOs still accept tax at the counter, but online payment is faster and gives an instant receipt. Some states have moved most tax payments online.

How do I correct a wrong tax amount on Vahan?

A wrong amount usually means a wrong vehicle class, price or owner type on the record. Visit your RTO with the RC and invoice to correct it before paying.

Is a road tax receipt valid as proof at a check?

Yes. The online receipt carries a transaction number that officers can verify. Keep a printout or PDF in the vehicle, especially for transport vehicles.

Do I pay road tax again when I buy a used car?

Not if the one-time tax is valid and the car stays in the same state. You pay the transfer fee instead. If the car moves to another state, that state's tax applies.
