UP border tax: how outside vehicles pay online and keep a valid receipt

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 14 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

UP border tax is the tax an outside-registered commercial vehicle pays to run in Uttar Pradesh for a set period. You pay it on the Vahan checkpost portal: choose Border Tax Payment, pick Uttar Pradesh as the visiting state, enter the vehicle number, calculate the tax, pay online and print the receipt. Private cars on a short trip usually owe nothing.

Key takeaways

  • UP border tax applies mainly to goods and passenger vehicles registered in another state; private cars on short trips are normally not charged.
  • An insurer guide reports per-day rates of Rs 50 to Rs 100 for outside goods vehicles and Rs 20 to Rs 30 for passenger vehicles; confirm the live amount on the portal.
  • The same checkpost portal handles Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and other states; always pick the state you are entering.
  • Your receipt is the proof the officer checks, so print it or keep the PDF on your phone before you cross.
  • Professional tax receipts come from a state tax department, not Vahan; P tax has nothing to do with your vehicle.

What is UP border tax?

UP border tax is the motor vehicle tax that Uttar Pradesh charges a vehicle registered in another state when it runs on UP roads for business. It is levied under the Uttar Pradesh Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1997, and today most of it is paid online on the national checkpost portal rather than in cash at the border.

Five steps to pay UP border tax online on the Vahan checkpost portal before entering
Choose the state you are entering, not the state on your plate.

Why the state charges it

Road tax pays for roads in the state where a vehicle is registered. A truck or tourist bus from Bihar or Haryana that earns money on UP highways has paid nothing to UP, so the state collects a short-period tax for the days it operates there.

How it differs from home-state road tax

Your home RTO collects one-time or periodic tax when the vehicle is registered. The border amount is extra and covers only the visiting state. For the wider picture across states, see our guide to check post tax.

Which outside vehicles pay UP border tax?

The charge falls mainly on transport vehicles: goods carriers, contract carriages, tourist taxis and buses registered outside Uttar Pradesh. Privately owned cars and two-wheelers on a family trip are not normally asked for it, because private vehicles pay lifetime tax at home and are covered for short visits.

Goods carriers

Light, medium and heavy goods vehicles entering UP on a temporary basis are taxed by their load class. Regular operators often choose a monthly or quarterly period.

Passenger vehicles

Buses, maxi cabs and taxis carrying passengers are taxed by type, with AC vehicles charged more than non-AC ones. Vehicles on a regular stage carriage route work under their own permit terms.

When a private car is affected

A private car becomes liable only if it settles in UP. Under Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, a vehicle kept in another state for more than 12 months needs a new registration mark there, which brings UP tax with it.

How much do outside vehicles pay per day in UP?

An insurer’s UP tax guide reports that light goods vehicles pay Rs 50 a day, medium goods Rs 75 and heavy goods Rs 100, while non-AC public service vehicles pay Rs 20 and AC ones Rs 30. Treat the portal’s calculation as final.

Outside vehicle typeReported tax per day
Light goods vehicle₹50
Medium goods vehicle₹75
Heavy goods vehicle₹100
Public service vehicle, non-AC₹20
Public service vehicle, AC₹30

Monthly and quarterly options

The same guide says a monthly option costs 12 days’ tax and a quarterly option 30 days’ tax. For a truck that works in UP most of the month, the longer period is far cheaper than daily payments.

Monthly and quarterly options are priced as 12 and 30 days of tax.

Do tourist vehicles with an AITP pay UP border tax?

It depends on what UP currently demands. A MoRTH circular of 4 August 2023 asked states not to levy border or check post tax on vehicles holding a valid All India Tourist Permit. In 2024 the Supreme Court declined to strike down state border tax demands and left operators to challenge them in High Courts.

What to do before the trip

Open the checkpost portal, select Uttar Pradesh and see whether your service type asks for tax. If it does, pay and keep the receipt, then raise any objection through your operators’ association, not at the barrier.

How does border tax payment work online?

A border tax payment is made on the Vahan checkpost portal at vahan.parivahan.gov.in/checkpost. You do not need an account. The portal reads your vehicle record from the national Vahan database, applies the visiting state’s rates, sends you to a payment gateway and then issues a receipt that officers can verify.

Which states use it

Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Bihar and many others accept payment here. If a state has not enabled a service, the screen says so and you pay at its counter or state site.

Border tax payment step by step

The flow is the same whichever state you are entering. It takes about five minutes if the vehicle record is complete. Have your card, UPI app or net banking ready before you click Pay Tax, because the session can time out.

  1. Open the portal. Go to vahan.parivahan.gov.in/checkpost and choose Border Tax Payment, then Tax Payment.
  2. Choose the visiting state. Pick Uttar Pradesh, or whichever state you are entering, and the service type that fits your vehicle.
  3. Enter the vehicle number. Type the registration number and click Get Details. Fill any field that does not load automatically.
  4. Calculate the tax. Enter the period, the border entry point and the seating or load details, then click Calculate Tax.
  5. Pay and save the receipt. Pay through the gateway, return to the checkpost page and print or download the receipt.

After you pay

Check that the receipt shows the right vehicle number, state and validity dates.

What details should you keep ready?

Keep the registration number, permit details and seating or load capacity at hand, plus the date and point where you will enter. The portal fills most fields from Vahan, but it asks you to confirm figures that set the amount, and a wrong entry means a wrong tax.

Checklist of details needed to pay other state tax online for a commercial vehicle
A wrong seat count or permit type changes the amount charged.

Vehicle papers

The RC, valid insurance, fitness certificate and permit should all be current on Vahan. An expired insurance entry can stop the calculation, so renew it first.

Trip details

Note the entry check post name and how many days you will stay. Choosing a period shorter than the trip leaves you uncovered on the last days.

How do you pay other state tax before a trip?

To pay other state tax, use the checkpost portal a day or two before you leave, choose the state you will enter and the period you need, and save the receipt. That leaves time to fix a missing Vahan entry.

Several states on one trip

A truck going from Delhi through UP to Bihar needs a separate receipt for each state that charges tax. Pay each state on its own screen; one payment never covers two states.

What is other state Vahan tax?

Other state Vahan tax is the name many people use for tax paid through Vahan by a vehicle registered elsewhere. It covers two different things: a short border payment for a visit, and the full road tax a vehicle owes after moving to a new state and re-registering there.

Short visit

For a visit, the checkpost portal charges the visiting state’s daily, weekly or monthly rate. Nothing changes on your RC.

Permanent move

After a move, you take a no objection certificate from the old RTO and pay the new state’s tax on re-registration. Some states refund part of the old lifetime tax.

What is checkpost road tax?

Checkpost road tax is road tax collected at, or on behalf of, a transport check post at a state border. It is the same border tax under another name. Officers at the post check that the vehicle has paid, and they can collect it on the spot if it has not.

Transport posts versus GST posts

Most commercial tax posts closed after GST in July 2017, but transport check posts remained in several states. Read our explainer on the check post for which states still run them.

What does check post road mean in searches?

“Check post road” is an ambiguous phrase. Many towns have a street named Check Post Road, searched for directions. Others mean the road where a transport check post sits. We cannot tell which you mean, so here are both.

Looking for a street address

Use a maps app with the town name added.

Looking for a border post

If you mean the highway post where tax is checked, pay online first. The receipt is valid at every post of that state.

Can check post online services replace the counter?

Mostly yes. Check post online payment is accepted at the border in states that have enabled it, and officers verify the receipt instead of collecting cash. The counter stays as a fallback where a post still runs, and it is the only option when a state has not switched on the online service.

When the counter is still needed

You may need it when the portal shows that a service is not activated, when a vehicle record is incomplete, or when the officer finds a mismatch, such as more seats than declared.

Why online is safer

An online receipt carries a transaction number and fixed amount.

What is Vahan checkpost 135?

We could not find any official Vahan form, menu item or service called checkpost 135. It is not a notified rate, a section number of the Motor Vehicles Act or a portal page we could confirm. It may be a mistyped search, a check post number on a local list, or a remembered amount.

What to do instead

If you need the tax amount, let the portal calculate it for your vehicle. If 135 is an amount someone asked for at a post, ask for an official receipt; never pay without one.

How does Vahan tax online payment work for your home state?

Vahan tax online payment for your own state uses Vahan citizen services, not the checkpost page. You enter the registration number, open the pay tax service, confirm with an OTP on the registered mobile, choose the tax mode and pay. Our guide to online payment covers the screens in detail.

Tax modes

Commercial vehicles can pick yearly, quarterly or monthly tax where the state allows. Private vehicles usually paid one-time tax at registration and see nothing due.

When the service is missing

If Vahan says the service is not activated for your state or RTO, the state has kept tax payment on its own site or at the counter.

How do you do UP road tax pay online?

For UP road tax pay online, a UP-registered vehicle owner goes to Vahan citizen services, selects Uttar Pradesh, enters the registration number, verifies the OTP and pays the tax shown. Commercial vehicles pay their periodic tax this way; outside vehicles use the checkpost route described above.

Full walk-through

Our page on UP tax online pay covers each screen, the tax modes and what to do when the OTP goes to an old number.

What is RC tax payment?

RC tax payment means paying the road tax linked to your registration certificate. Every RC carries a tax status in Vahan: paid up to a date, or lifetime for most private vehicles. When people search this phrase, they usually want to clear periodic tax on a commercial vehicle or check whether tax is due.

Where the status shows

The tax validity appears on the Vahan record and the mParivahan virtual RC. A transport vehicle with lapsed tax cannot renew fitness or permit until it is cleared.

How it connects to border tax

Home-state tax on the RC must be current before many states accept a border payment, so clear it first.

What else can you settle by RC online payment?

Besides tax, an RC online payment on Vahan can cover fees for transfer of ownership, address change, hypothecation entries, a duplicate RC and RC renewal. Each is a separate service with its own fee, and each ends with a receipt you can reprint later from the same portal.

Fees versus tax

A fee pays for an RTO service; tax pays for using roads. The portal shows them as separate lines, and only the tax line counts towards border or road tax.

How do you do a Vahan tax receipt download?

For a Vahan tax receipt download, open the Status menu in Vahan citizen services and choose Reprint Receipt. Search by application number, receipt number, bank transaction number or registration number and save the PDF. Border tax receipts are reprinted from the checkpost portal instead.

What if a border tax payment fails?

If money left your account but no receipt appeared, wait one to two hours and then use Check Pending Transaction on the portal. Most failures settle on their own: either the receipt is issued or the bank reverses the debit. Do not pay again until the first transaction shows as failed.

Common border tax payment errors such as debited money without receipt, with fixes
Never pay twice before the first transaction has settled.

Checking the status

Enter the vehicle number or transaction number and click the transaction to re-check it with the bank. If it shows success, print the receipt.

When to call the bank

If the portal marks it failed and the money has not returned in a few working days, raise a complaint with your bank quoting the transaction reference.

What is Tamil Nadu border tax?

Tamil Nadu border tax is the entry tax that Tamil Nadu charges commercial vehicles registered in another state. A 2026 guide says other-state commercial vehicles pay an other-state vehicle tax, while a private vehicle owes Tamil Nadu road tax only if it is used there for more than 12 months.

Who is checked

Tourist taxis and buses from Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh are the most common payers, along with goods vehicles on temporary permits.

What the guides do not say

No current per-day rate for Tamil Nadu was found in a source we could verify. The portal calculates it from the state notification, so do not rely on figures from forums.

How is Tamil Nadu border tax paid online?

Use the same checkpost service: choose Tamil Nadu, confirm the service name, enter the vehicle number, click Get Details, then Calculate Tax and Pay Tax. After the gateway, return to the checkpost application, which shows the receipt if payment worked. Print it before you set out.

Documents to carry

A procedure guide lists identity proof, driving licence, RC and insurance. Officers at a post may ask for any of these along with the receipt.

Validity

The same guide calls 30 days from payment typical, but this is generic. Go by the dates printed on your receipt.

Comparison of Tamil Nadu border tax and Karnataka checkpost tax rules for outside vehicles
Both states still list counter payment as a fallback.

What is border tax Karnataka?

Border tax Karnataka charges other-state vehicles in two ways. Tourist vehicles have paid an annual entry tax since 2013, payable in full regardless of stay. And under the state Taxation Act, any vehicle registered outside Karnataka that stays more than 30 days is taxed as if registered there.

The 30-day rule

This rule catches private cars of people who have moved to Bengaluru for work but kept the old number. Details are in our page on road tax in Karnataka.

Border posts

A 2015 CAG audit counted 15 Karnataka check posts on the state border, and the Lokayukta inspected several in October 2024, so posts were still working then.

Can you pay Karnataka checkpost tax online?

Yes. Karnataka checkpost tax online is paid on the same portal: choose Border Tax Payment, Tax Payment, then Karnataka as the visiting state. Insurer guides also describe a Vehicle Tax Collection (Other State) option in Vahan for vehicles that stay longer and owe full tax.

Which route to use

Use the checkpost route for a trip and the other-state tax route for a vehicle now based in Karnataka. Picking the wrong one gives the wrong amount.

Rates

Current Karnataka entry tax rates for outside tourist vehicles were not found in a verifiable source; let the portal calculate them.

Is professional tax charged on your car or bike?

No. Professional tax is a state tax on salaries, trades and professions, and it has nothing to do with vehicles, RTOs or Vahan. It appears here only because people search for P tax receipts alongside road tax receipts. Article 276(2) of the Constitution caps it at Rs 2,500 a person a year.

Who pays it

Employers deduct it from salaries and pay it to the state. Self-employed people pay it themselves.

Where do you see professional tax payment details?

Your professional tax payment details appear on your salary slip if you are employed, usually as a monthly deduction. Employers and self-employed payers see payment history on the state’s profession tax portal after logging in with their registration number.

PTRC and PTEC

States such as Maharashtra and Karnataka use two registrations. PTRC is the employer’s registration for tax deducted from staff. PTEC is the enrolment for the business or self-employed person’s own tax.

How do you get a professional tax payment receipt?

A professional tax payment receipt is generated by the state tax portal once payment succeeds. Payers download it from the same portal. An employee does not get a separate receipt; the employer’s payment covers the staff, and the payslip or Form 16 is your record.

Professional tax payment receipt download by state

Each state runs its own portal, so a professional tax payment receipt download depends on where you are registered. In Maharashtra, payment runs through GRAS on the MahaGST site, which issues separate cyber receipts for PTEC and PTRC. In Karnataka, the e-Prerana portal offers a Verify/Print option for receipts.

Maharashtra

Log in on MahaGST, open the payment history and download the cyber receipt. Keep PTEC and PTRC receipts in separate folders.

Karnataka and other states

On e-Prerana (ptax.karnataka.gov.in), employers log in for PTRC and enrolled persons for PTEC. Karnataka payment is reported as due by the 20th of the following month. Other states have their own commercial tax sites.

What is a P tax payment receipt?

A P tax payment receipt is simply a professional tax payment receipt; “P tax” is the common short form, especially in West Bengal and Maharashtra. It shows the registration number, period, amount and bank reference. It is never issued by an RTO and cannot be used as proof of vehicle tax.

Do not confuse it with tax token

Some states call the periodic vehicle tax receipt a tax token. That comes from the transport department, while a P tax receipt comes from the tax department. For vehicle tax in general, start from our road tax guide.

UP border tax questions

Do I pay UP border tax for a private car on a holiday trip?

Usually no. Entry tax in UP is aimed at outside transport vehicles. A private car only needs fresh registration and tax if it stays in another state for more than 12 months under Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Can I pay UP border tax after I enter the state?

Pay before you reach the border. Officers or enforcement squads can stop a commercial vehicle that has no receipt, and paying late on the spot can bring a penalty on top of the tax.

Is the online receipt accepted at the border?

Yes. The receipt from the Vahan checkpost portal is the official proof of payment. Keep a printed copy and the PDF on your phone in case the network is weak.

What if I chose the wrong state on the portal?

Tax paid to the wrong state does not cover your trip. Pay for the correct state and ask the state you paid by mistake about a refund, since rules differ.

Does an AITP tourist taxi pay UP border tax?

A 2023 MoRTH circular asked states not to charge border tax on vehicles with a valid All India Tourist Permit, but a 2024 Supreme Court ruling left state demands in place. Check what the portal asks for UP before you travel.

How long is a border tax receipt valid?

For the period you choose when paying, such as a day, a week, a month or a quarter. The end date and time are printed on the receipt.

Where do I download my professional tax payment receipt?

From your state's commercial tax or profession tax portal, such as MahaGST in Maharashtra or e-Prerana in Karnataka. Salaried staff can ask the employer, who pays it for them.

Is there a helpline for failed border tax payments?

Start with the pending transaction check on the portal and your bank. If a fake site took your money, report it on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in.
