National permit guide: apply, pay, check and renew online

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 24 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

A national permit lets a goods carriage run anywhere in India on one home-state permit plus a yearly authorisation. Your RTO checks the vehicle and uploads the record, then you pay the consolidated fee of Rs 16,500 a year on the Vahan NP portal. The permit lasts five years; the authorisation must be renewed every year.

Key takeaways

  • A national permit is only for goods carriages; tourist buses and taxis use the All India Tourist Permit or state permits.
  • It has two parts: a home state permit valid for five years and an authorisation you pay for every year.
  • The consolidated fee under Rule 87(2) of the CMVR is Rs 16,500 a year, paid online on the Vahan NP portal.
  • Trucks lose the permit at 12 years (15 for multi-axle) from first registration unless the vehicle is replaced.
  • Apply for permit renewal at least 15 days before expiry, and keep the e-receipt and permit print in the cab.

What is a national permit?

A national permit is a goods carriage permit that lets a truck carry loads across every state and Union Territory on one set of papers. It is granted under Section 88(12) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, to encourage long-distance inter-state road transport, and it is managed online through Vahan.

Five steps to get a national permit for a goods vehicle through the RTO and Vahan
The RTO uploads your record first; payment comes after that.

The two parts of a national permit

Every national permit has a home state permit, issued by the RTO or Regional Transport Authority where the truck is registered, and an authorisation that extends it to the whole country. The permit runs for five years. The authorisation is bought one year at a time.

Why the scheme exists

Before the scheme, a truck crossing several states needed countersignatures and separate payments in each one. The national permit replaces that with a single consolidated fee paid into a central account, which is then shared among the states by an agreed formula.

What does an all India permit for commercial vehicle cover?

An all India permit for commercial vehicle owners, in the goods sense, covers loaded and empty runs anywhere in India except on roads or routes a state has specifically prohibited. It does not cover carrying passengers, and it does not replace the vehicle’s registration, fitness, insurance or home-state tax.

What the authorisation says

The authorisation states that the vehicle is allowed to ply throughout India except on prohibited routes or roads. Keep it with the permit, because an officer reading only the home-state permit may otherwise treat the trip as unauthorised.

What it leaves out

Passenger vehicles are outside it. A tourist bus or taxi going across states needs an All India Tourist Permit, which has its own rules and fees. Our all India tourist permit guide explains that scheme.

Which vehicles need a vehicle permit in India?

Any transport vehicle used for hire or reward needs a vehicle permit: trucks, tempos, buses, taxis, maxi cabs and auto rickshaws. Private cars and bikes used only by the owner need none. The type of permit depends on whether the vehicle carries goods or passengers, and how far it goes.

Goods vehicles

Small goods vehicles running locally take a goods carriage permit for their region or state. Trucks on long-haul inter-state work usually choose the national permit, because one yearly payment replaces separate permits in each state they cross.

Passenger vehicles

Buses on fixed routes hold stage carriage permits. Buses and cabs hired as a whole hold contract carriage permits. Tourist vehicles that cross many states hold the All India Tourist Permit. Contract carriage and special permits are explained further down.

How does the Vahan national permit system work?

The Vahan national permit system links the home RTO’s permit record with a national payment module. The RTO checks the vehicle and enters the permit details. The owner then pays the yearly fee online, and the authorisation is issued against that payment. The payment is credited to the national permit account.

The RTO side

The permit issuing authority verifies the vehicle’s age, fitness, insurance and dues, then grants the permit and records it in Vahan. Only transport authorities upload this data. Owners cannot create a national permit record themselves.

The owner side

Once the record is live, the owner opens the national permit page, finds the vehicle and pays the consolidated fee. The e-receipt is the proof that the authorisation for that year is paid.

What can you do on the Vahan NP portal?

The Vahan NP portal handles the national permit payment and the records that go with it. Owners use it to pay the yearly fee, check whether a payment went through and print the e-receipt. Transport offices use a separate login on the same system to grant, renew and update permits.

Services for owners

The public pages usually offer online payment of national permit, payment and transaction status, and receipt printing. Menu names change from time to time.

Services for offices

RTO staff log in to grant new permits, renew them, record a replacement of vehicle, cancel a surrendered permit and send weekly reports. If your record is wrong, only that office can correct it.

Is an all India permit the same as a national permit?

For trucks, yes. Truck owners and transporters often call the national permit an all India permit, because it lets the vehicle run in every state. For passenger vehicles the phrase usually means the All India Tourist Permit, which is a separate scheme with different fees and rules.

How to tell which one someone means

Ask what the vehicle carries. If it carries goods, the answer is the national permit and the yearly consolidated fee. If it carries tourists, the answer is the AITP, granted under the 2023 tourist vehicle rules for periods of 90 days or more.

Why the mix-up matters

Paying the wrong scheme’s fee does not give you the right permit. The goods module will not find a tourist vehicle at all.

What is NP authorization and why does it run yearly?

NP authorization is the document that extends a home state goods permit to the whole of India. It is issued on Form 47, or on Form 23-A when the RC is a smart card, after the yearly consolidated fee is paid. Because the fee is annual, the authorisation is also renewed every year.

NP authorisation and the permit are separate

The permit lasts five years under Section 81. The NP authorisation lasts one paid year. A truck can therefore hold a valid permit but an expired authorisation, which means it may run only inside its home state until the next payment.

Proposed five-year option

An August 2026 MoRTH draft proposes letting owners take the authorisation for up to five years at the same yearly rate, which would be Rs 82,500 paid at once. It also proposes electronic forms and receipts. This is only a draft until it appears in the Gazette.

Who can get a national permit?

The owner of a registered goods carriage with no pending dues can apply. The vehicle must be within the age limit, hold a valid fitness certificate and insurance, and have paid all tax, penalties and compounding fees due to its home state. The RTO checks each of these before granting.

Age limit for the vehicle

Under Rule 88(3) of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, a national permit ends when the vehicle reaches 12 years from first registration, or 15 years for a multi-axle vehicle. For an articulated vehicle the age runs from the prime mover’s first registration. Replacing the vehicle keeps the permit alive.

Fitness and insurance

A truck with a lapsed fitness certificate cannot get or renew a permit. Our fitness certificate guide explains the test and renewal cycle. Insurance must also be current on the Vahan record, not just on paper.

CheckWhat the RTO looks for
Vehicle ageUnder 12 years, or under 15 for multi-axle
FitnessValid fitness certificate on Vahan
InsuranceCurrent policy linked to the RC

Which documents does an online national permit need?

An online national permit application needs the RC, a valid fitness certificate, insurance, proof that home-state tax is paid for the current period, and the permit and authorisation forms. Some states also ask for green tax proof. Most of these are now read straight from the Vahan record.

Checklist of documents needed for an all India permit on a goods carriage
A lapsed fitness or insurance record stops the application at the RTO.

Forms you will see

The permit itself is applied for on Form 48. The authorisation for all-India use is applied for on Form 46. The August 2026 draft proposes that Vahan fills most of these fields automatically, so owners add only what the system does not already hold.

Owner details

Keep the mobile number on the RC up to date, because one-time passwords and payment messages go to it. A wrong number is one of the most common reasons owners cannot complete the online steps.

How do you apply for a permit online?

For a new goods or passenger permit, open the Vahan citizen services page, choose your state and select the permit service. Enter the registration number, verify the OTP, pick the permit type, upload documents and pay the application fee. The RTO then reviews the application and decides it.

What happens after you submit

You get an application number. Keep it, because the status search and any office visit need it. If the RTO asks for an inspection or extra papers, the status page shows that, and our know your application status guide explains how to read it.

How does national permit login work?

There is no owner account in the usual sense. The national permit login with a user ID and password is for transport department staff. Owners use the public payment pages, where the vehicle is found by its registration number and the last five characters of the chassis number, with an OTP to the registered mobile.

If you cannot get in

Check that you are on the official vahan.parivahan.gov.in address. Look-alike sites that ask for a username, password or card details are not the national permit service. The genuine page only needs vehicle details and an OTP.

Authorisation fees differ by state; the consolidated fee is national.

How to make a national permit online payment?

To make a national permit online payment, open the Vahan NP portal, choose the online payment option, enter the registration number and the last five chassis characters, confirm the OTP, check the details and pay by net banking, card or UPI. Download the e-receipt before closing the page.

  1. Open the payment page. Go to vahan.parivahan.gov.in/npermit and choose online payment of national permit.
  2. Find the vehicle. Enter the registration number and the last five characters of the chassis number.
  3. Verify the OTP. Enter the code sent to the mobile number on the RC.
  4. Check the details. Confirm the owner, permit number, home state and the authorisation period shown.
  5. Pay and save. Pay through the gateway and download the composite fee e-receipt.

NP online payment by UPI or card

NP online payment goes through the state or national gateway attached to Vahan. Net banking, debit and credit cards and UPI are usually offered. Do not close the window while the bank redirects.

Pay national permit fees on time

If you pay national permit fees after the authorisation has ended, the truck should not have left its home state in the gap. Late payment does not cover earlier trips.

What is NP tax?

NP tax is what transporters commonly call the yearly consolidated fee for the national permit. Strictly it is a fee, not a tax: under Rule 87(2) of the CMVR it is Rs 16,500 per year per vehicle, deposited in the national permit account and then shared among the states and Union Territories.

NP tax online

Paying NP tax online is the same as the national permit payment described above. The receipt may be titled national permit composite fee payment detail. Home-state road tax is a separate payment on Vahan and is not included.

NP tax online payment history

The consolidated fee started at Rs 15,000 a year when the new system began in May 2010 and was later raised to Rs 16,500. The portal amount at the time of NP tax online payment is the one that counts.

Which online permit fees apply to a national permit?

Three charges usually apply: the home state’s permit fee, a state authorisation fee collected by the issuing authority, and the national consolidated fee. Only the consolidated fee is the same everywhere. Our national permit fees page tracks the state charges in more detail.

National permit fees online versus at the RTO

National permit fees online cover the consolidated fee. The state authorisation and permit fees may be collected online on the state’s Vahan permit service or at the RTO, depending on the state.

Tax permit online for the home state

Owners searching for tax permit online often need two payments: home-state motor vehicle tax and the permit fees. Pay the tax first, because the RTO checks it before it uploads the permit.

What is a national permit challan?

A national permit challan means two different things. Earlier it was the paper bank challan used to deposit the consolidated fee at a State Bank of India branch. Today people also use it for an e-challan issued to a national permit truck for a traffic or permit offence.

The old payment challan

Under the 2010 procedure, owners deposited the fee by cash or demand draft through a prescribed challan at a designated SBI branch, and the bank sent a scroll to the RTO. The online e-receipt has replaced this for most states.

Permit challan for an offence

A permit challan for running without a valid permit, or outside its conditions, falls under Section 192A of the Motor Vehicles Act. Pay or contest it through the e-challan system, not the national permit portal.

How to check permit online?

To learn how to check permit online, open Vahan citizen services, choose your state, and use the permit or vehicle details search with the registration number. For a national permit, also use the payment and transaction status on the NP portal to confirm the current authorisation.

What the check confirms

A permit check confirms that a permit is recorded, its type, its number and its validity dates. It does not prove the vehicle is following the permit’s conditions on a given trip, such as load limits or route restrictions.

Check permit status online for an application

To check permit status online for something you applied for, use the application number in the status search. For a fuller look at bus and route permit lookups, see our permit status guide.

How do you do a national permit check by vehicle number?

A national permit check by vehicle number starts on the NP portal or the Vahan vehicle search. Enter the registration number, and for the payment screen add the last five chassis characters. The result shows whether the authorisation is paid and until when.

Online national permit check before hiring

An online national permit check protects the hirer, because a truck running outside its home state without a current authorisation can be stopped mid-trip. Ask the owner for the registration number and check it yourself.

All India permit check for a used truck

Before buying a used truck, an all India permit check shows whether the permit and authorisation are live and how close the vehicle is to the age limit. A truck near 12 years has little permit life left.

What does national permit status show?

The national permit status shows the permit number, the home state, the validity of the permit and of the current authorisation, and the payment status. A pending payment shows as pending or in process until the bank confirms. An expired authorisation shows its end date.

Online permit check after paying

Run an online permit check a few minutes after paying. If the status still says pending after the bank has debited you, wait before paying again. Pending transactions usually settle on their own.

Vehicle permit check online during inspection

Officers can also run a vehicle permit check online at the roadside. Keep your own copy of the status page or receipt so you can show it if the network is down.

How to download vehicle permit online?

For how to download vehicle permit online, open Vahan citizen services, select your state and the print permit or permit related option, then enter the registration number and application or permit number. The PDF opens for download. For a national permit, also download the composite fee e-receipt from the NP portal.

Vehicle permit download and NP permit download

A vehicle permit download gives you the permit document. An NP permit download gives you the authorisation receipt. You need both on a long trip. Our online permit download guide covers the download in more depth.

Vahan permit download problems

If the Vahan permit download shows a blank page, allow pop-ups and try again in a different browser. If it says the record is not found, the permit may not have been issued on Vahan yet.

How do you take a national permit print?

For a national permit print, go to the print receipt option on the NP portal, enter the vehicle details and print or save the e-receipt as a PDF. The permit itself is printed from the state’s Vahan permit service, or collected from the RTO in states that still hand over a copy.

NP permit print size and copies

Print the NP permit print on plain A4 paper and keep one copy in the cab and one at the office. A clear phone PDF also helps when the paper copy gets damaged.

Vahan np records on the print

The print shows the vehicle number, owner, permit number and validity. A wrong detail on the vahan np record has to be corrected by the RTO.

What does a vehicle permit receipt show?

A vehicle permit receipt shows the transaction number, bank reference, date, amount, vehicle registration number, permit number and the period covered. For a national permit, it confirms the consolidated fee for one authorisation year. It is the main proof if a payment is disputed later.

Keep the bank reference

The bank reference number links the receipt to the debit in your account. If the portal shows no receipt, this number is what the bank and the RTO ask for when tracing the payment.

Receipt versus permit

A receipt is proof of payment, not a permit. Officers want to see the permit and authorisation as well. The receipt alone does not prove the vehicle has a valid permit.

When is permit renewal due?

Permit renewal is due every five years. Under Section 81 of the Motor Vehicles Act, apply at least 15 days before the permit expires. The authority can accept a late application if you show good and sufficient cause, and a renewal granted late takes effect from the old expiry date.

What can stop a renewal

The authority checks the same things as for a new permit: fitness, insurance, age and dues. A truck past the age limit cannot be renewed and must be replaced. Pending penalties also block renewal.

Renewing the yearly authorisation

The national permit authorisation is renewed by paying the next year’s consolidated fee. This is separate from the five-yearly permit renewal, and missing either one stops the truck running outside its home state.

ItemPeriodWhen to act
Home state permit5 yearsApply 15 days or more before expiry
National permit authorisation1 yearPay before the paid year ends
Vehicle age limit12 years (15 multi-axle)Plan a replacement before the limit
Temporary permitUp to 4 monthsApply before the trip

How does national permit renewal online work?

National permit renewal online has two parts. For the authorisation, pay the next year’s fee on the NP portal. For the five-year permit, apply on the Vahan permit service with your permit number, upload the fitness and insurance details, pay the renewal fee and follow the RTO’s review.

Vehicle permit renewal online steps

For vehicle permit renewal online, choose your state on Vahan, open the permit renewal service, enter the registration number, confirm the OTP, check the pre-filled details, upload any missing papers and pay. Save the application number.

After renewal

Print the renewed permit and confirm on the vehicle search that the new expiry date shows. If the date has not changed after the RTO approves, ask the office to update the record.

Comparison of a national permit and a state permit for commercial vehicles
Buses and taxis use tourist or contract permits, not the national permit.

Why does permit checking online show no record?

Permit checking online shows no record when the RTO has not entered the permit on Vahan, when the registration number is typed with spaces or a wrong letter, or when an old paper permit was never migrated. The fix is almost always at the issuing office, not on the portal.

Common permit check online errors on Vahan and how to fix each one
Most missing records are upload delays at the issuing RTO.

Records from before Vahan

Some older permits were issued on paper and entered later. If yours is missing, take the original permit to the RTO and ask them to migrate the record to Vahan.

Typing mistakes

Enter the registration number without spaces or dashes. Check letters like O and 0, and I and 1. For the chassis field, copy the last five characters exactly as on the RC.

When do you need a temporary permit online?

You need a temporary permit online when a transport vehicle goes outside the area of its regular permit for a short time, or has no permit yet for a one-off need. Under Section 87, temporary permits cover special occasions, seasonal business, a particular temporary need, or the gap while a renewal is pending.

How long a temporary permit lasts

A temporary permit lasts at most four months. For goods carriages in exceptional cases, the authority can grant up to one year with reasons recorded in writing. Our temporary permit guide walks through the application.

TP online on the checkpost service

Many states take TP online payments through the Vahan checkpost service, where you pick the state you are entering and the service type. The tax for entering that state is often paid in the same flow.

How does Karnataka temporary permit online payment work?

Karnataka temporary permit online payment is made through the online permit service for Karnataka or the Vahan checkpost service. You enter the vehicle number, verify with an OTP, choose the temporary permit, note the application number and pay. Karnataka’s rates were not confirmed for this guide, so check them on the portal.

Karnataka TP online for tourist vehicles

Karnataka TP online is mostly used by tourist taxis and buses from other states that hold only a home-state permit. Vehicles with a valid AITP have a different position, which is still argued in court.

Karnataka permit online for local vehicles

For Karnataka permit online services on vehicles registered in Karnataka, use Vahan with Karnataka selected. The Karnataka temporary permit online application is one of several permit services listed there.

How does Pondicherry permit online work for a short visit?

Pondicherry permit online services follow the Vahan route for tax and permits. Puducherry’s transport department says goods vehicles from other states can get a temporary permit at the Gorimedu checkpost. A Puducherry vehicle going out can get a 30-day temporary permit for another state on a Rs 100 fee plus tax.

Documents for a Puducherry temporary permit

Carry the RC, insurance, fitness certificate, proof of tax and the primary permit. The same papers are needed whether you pay online first or at the checkpost.

What is a state permit?

A state permit is a permit valid within the state, or the region, that issued it. Goods carriages, taxis and buses that work mainly at home take a state permit. To run in another state, the permit must be countersigned there, unless it is a national, tourist or special permit.

State permit online

Owners apply for a state permit online on the Vahan permit service with their state selected. The fee, the period and the vehicle categories depend on the state’s rules.

State permit or national permit for trucks

A truck that rarely leaves home can save money with a state permit and occasional temporary permits. A truck on regular inter-state runs is usually better off with the national permit.

When does an interstate permit need countersignature?

An interstate permit needs countersignature when a regular permit from one state is used in another. Section 88(1) says a permit from one region or state is not valid in another unless countersigned there, with some listed exceptions. National, AITP and special permits avoid this by design.

How countersignature works

The other state’s transport authority endorses your permit for its territory, usually for a fee. States agree on these under reciprocal transport agreements for routes that cross their borders.

Why most truckers avoid it

Collecting countersignatures from several states takes time and money. The national permit’s single yearly fee is the simpler route for long-haul goods work.

What is a contract carriage permit?

A contract carriage permit covers a passenger vehicle hired as a whole under a contract, at a fixed or agreed rate, for a trip or a period. Taxis, cabs and hired buses use it. The vehicle cannot pick up or drop separate passengers along the way, as a route bus does.

Contract carriage versus stage carriage

A stage carriage charges separate fares and stops on a notified route. A contract carriage carries one hiring party. The two permits are not interchangeable.

Going to another state

A contract carriage with only a state permit needs a temporary permit or countersignature to go out of state, or it can hold a tourist permit if it qualifies.

What is a taxi permit?

A taxi permit is the contract carriage permit for a motor cab, usually with yellow number plates. It lets the vehicle be hired by passengers. A private white-plate car cannot be used as a taxi without converting its registration to transport and getting a permit.

Taxi permission for app-based cabs

Taxi permission for app-based cabs works the same way: the vehicle needs a transport registration and a permit, and the driver needs a licence valid for transport vehicles. State aggregator rules may add more conditions.

Taxi permit for out-of-state trips

For trips outside the home state, a taxi needs a temporary permit, an AITP or a countersigned permit.

What is an auto permit?

An auto permit is the contract carriage permit for a three-wheeler auto rickshaw. Many cities cap the number of auto permits, so new ones may be issued only in limited rounds or for CNG and electric vehicles. The permit is valid only within the area the RTO names.

Auto rickshaw permit online check

For an auto rickshaw permit online check, search the registration number on Vahan citizen services in your state. The vehicle details show whether a permit is recorded and when it ends.

Transferring an auto permit

Rules on transferring an auto permit with the vehicle differ by state. Ask the RTO before buying a used auto with a permit.

Does a private car need a car permit?

No. A private car used by its owner needs no car permit. A permit is needed only when the car is used for hire or reward as a taxi. Searches for car permit online usually come from people driving to another state or abroad, which involve different documents.

Private cars in other states

A private car on a holiday in another state needs no permit. If it stays more than 12 months, re-registration in the new state becomes the issue, which is covered on our road tax pillar page.

Driving a private car abroad

For driving abroad, what you need is an International Driving Permit, which is linked to your licence, not a vehicle permit.

What is a special permit?

A special permit under Section 88(8) lets a public service vehicle hired as a whole carry passengers under a contract without stopping to pick up or drop others on the route. It is valid in other regions and states without countersignature. Operators use it for one-off group trips.

When a special permit fits

Wedding parties, pilgrim groups and school trips are typical cases. The vehicle must carry a distinguishing mark showing it runs under a special permit.

Special permit versus temporary permit

A special permit is for a hired group trip across regions. A temporary permit covers a short need, seasonal work or a pending renewal.

What is a T permit licence?

T permit licence is not an official term in the Motor Vehicles Act. People use it for two things: a TP, short for temporary permit, or a driving licence valid for transport vehicles. Which one you need depends on whether the question is about the vehicle or the driver.

If you mean the vehicle

A temporary permit lets a transport vehicle run outside its normal permit for a limited time. It is covered in the temporary permit section above.

If you mean the driver

A driver of a goods or passenger transport vehicle needs a licence that covers that class of vehicle. The permit belongs to the vehicle; the licence belongs to the driver, and both are checked at a roadside stop.

What happens if you drive without a valid permit?

Using a transport vehicle without a valid permit, or against its conditions, is an offence under Section 192A. The penalty can go up to Rs 10,000 and up to six months in jail for a first offence, and the vehicle can be detained. An expired authorisation counts outside the home state.

Common ways trucks get caught

An expired yearly authorisation, a permit past the age limit, a missing N/P marking, or running a route the state prohibits. Each shows up quickly on a roadside Vahan check.

Fixing it

Pay the pending fee, renew the permit or replace the vehicle as needed. Then deal with any challan through the e-challan system.

Key national permit numbers including yearly fee, validity and renewal window
Check the portal for the current fee before you pay.

Which national permit mistakes should you avoid?

The costly national permit mistakes are letting the yearly authorisation lapse, paying twice when a status is pending, missing the five-year renewal date, running a truck past its age limit and trusting agents who ask for OTPs. Each one either stops the truck or costs money you cannot get back.

Do's and don'ts for truck owners using the Vahan NP national permit portal
Most refused renewals trace back to an expired fitness or insurance record.

Mixing up permit and authorisation dates

Write both dates on the cab’s document folder. The permit date and the authorisation date are almost never the same, and owners often renew one and forget the other.

Ignoring the vehicle markings

The 2018 rules dropped the old dark brown body colour but still require “National Permit” or “N/P” in bold at the front and rear, and “N/P” on the rear and left side of trailers.

National permit questions

Can a private car get a national permit?

No. The national permit under Section 88(12) is only for goods carriages. Private cars need no permit for personal use, and tourist cars use the All India Tourist Permit.

Is the national permit fee paid once or every year?

The consolidated fee is paid every year for the authorisation. The underlying home state permit is valid for five years and is renewed separately.

Can I pay the national permit fee before the RTO uploads my data?

No. The portal only finds vehicles whose permit details the transport authority has entered. If nothing comes up, contact the issuing RTO first.

Do I need two drivers on a national permit truck?

No. The two-driver condition was dropped in November 2018. Each driver still needs a valid licence for the vehicle class.

Does a national permit truck still pay home state road tax?

Yes. The authority checks that tax due to the home state is paid before granting or renewing. The consolidated fee replaces separate permit charges of other states, not home tax.

Can I check another truck's permit before hiring it?

Yes. A permit check by vehicle number on Vahan shows whether a permit and authorisation are recorded and their validity dates. Confirm on the official portal, not on a forwarded screenshot.

What if my national permit authorisation lapses?

Do not run outside the home state until you pay the next year. Using a vehicle outside the terms of its permit can attract a penalty under Section 192A.

Can a national permit be moved to a new truck?

Rule 88(3) lets the permit continue if the vehicle is replaced before the age limit. Apply to the issuing RTO for replacement of vehicle with the new RC.

Is the Vahan NP portal run by the government?

Yes. It is part of Vahan, run by MoRTH with NIC. This website is an independent guide and does not issue permits or collect fees.

Where can I see the permit number?

It is printed on the permit, the authorisation and the fee e-receipt. A Vahan vehicle search also shows the permit number against the registration number.
