Punjab road tax explained: what you pay, where and how

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 14 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

Punjab road tax is the state motor vehicle tax charged under the Punjab Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1924. A private car or bike pays it once, at first registration, on the invoice price; taxis, buses and trucks pay it again for each tax period. The exact amount is shown on the Vahan tax screen or by your Punjab RTO.

Key takeaways

  • Punjab road tax is a state levy under the Punjab Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1924, collected when a vehicle is registered.
  • Private cars and two-wheelers pay a one-time tax at registration; commercial vehicles pay for each tax period.
  • We could not confirm Punjab's current slab percentages from an official source, so use the Vahan tax screen or the RTO for the binding figure.
  • Central fees such as the ₹600 car registration fee and ₹200 smart card charge are added on top of the tax.
  • A vehicle from another state kept in Punjab for more than 12 months must be re-registered here, with Punjab tax paid.
  • This is an independent guide, not the Punjab Transport Department. Pay only on gov.in portals or at an RTO counter.

What is Punjab road tax and who pays it?

Punjab road tax is the motor vehicle tax the state charges for using or keeping a vehicle on its roads. The registered owner pays it when the vehicle is first registered at a Punjab RTO, usually through the dealer.

Punjab road tax compared for private vehicles and commercial transport vehicles
Private owners pay once; transport operators keep paying through the vehicle's life.

Who is liable

The person named on the registration certificate is responsible for the tax. If you buy a used PB vehicle, any unpaid tax follows the vehicle, so check the tax status on Vahan before handing over money.

When it is collected

For a new vehicle the dealer usually files the registration and tax together. Guides say the tax must be paid within one month of registration; we could not confirm that rule on an official page, so treat the RTO’s demand date as final.

Which law sets MV tax Punjab rates?

MV tax Punjab is levied under the Punjab Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1924, one of the oldest vehicle tax laws still in use in India. The Act allows the state government to fix and revise rates by notification, so the percentage you pay can change without a new law being passed.

Rates come by notification

Because rates sit in notifications and schedules rather than in the Act’s main text, a guide that was right three years ago may be wrong today.

Central law sits alongside

Registration itself falls under the central Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The state law decides tax; the central law decides registration, transfer and the 12-month rule for vehicles from other states.

What does Punjab tax cover for a vehicle owner?

People who search Punjab tax may mean several different levies. For a vehicle owner, the one that matters is motor vehicle tax collected by the Transport Department. Income tax, property tax and state GST are handled by other departments and other portals, and none of them is paid through Vahan.

Taxes you might meet

A Punjab owner may meet the one-time tax on a private vehicle, the periodic tax on a transport vehicle, and an entry tax charged by another state when a commercial vehicle crosses the border.

Taxes you will not pay here

GST is built into the showroom price, and the dealer pays it.

What is the Punjab RTO tax rate in 2026?

We could not confirm the current Punjab RTO tax rate from an official source while preparing this page in October 2026. The Punjab transport websites did not load from our system, and private guides print different figures. The figure that binds you is the one Vahan calculates when the vehicle is registered.

What we know for sure

The tax on a new private vehicle is a percentage of its ex-showroom or invoice price, paid once. Commercial vehicles are taxed on seats, weight or permit type, paid for a period.

How to get the real number

Ask the dealer for the tax line on its own, or ask your RTO. If you already own the vehicle, the Vahan tax screen shows the amount due and the period it covers.

Why do guides disagree on RTO tax in Punjab?

RTO tax in Punjab has been revised several times, and many websites never updated their tables. One large insurer guide still prints cost-based rates linked to a 1990s amendment next to even older age-based yearly rates, and it contradicts itself on whether the tax is paid quarterly or as a lump sum.

Signs of an outdated table

A table with no notification number, no date, or rates far below neighbouring states is probably old. Rates tied to vehicle age or unladen weight belong to the yearly system that one-time tax replaced.

What we did instead

Rather than print a percentage we could not verify, this page explains how the tax works and points to the screen that shows the true figure.

How much is new car road tax in Punjab?

New car road tax in Punjab is the state percentage applied to the car’s invoice price, collected once at registration. Since we could not verify the current slab, the safest way to know your amount is the dealer’s itemised quote. The tax line should match what Vahan records against the new registration number.

Read the quote line by line

A dealer quote lists ex-showroom price, insurance, registration and tax, and sometimes accessories and a handling charge. The road tax figure should be shown separately; if it is merged into “RTO charges”, ask for the split.

Price is the base

The percentage is normally applied to the invoice price, which already includes GST.

Ask the dealer to show the tax line on its own before you pay.

How does a Punjab road tax calculator estimate work?

A Punjab road tax calculator multiplies the invoice price by the slab rate for that vehicle class and fuel, then subtracts any rebate. The method is simple; the hard part is using the right rate. A calculator that does not name its notification or date may be running on an outdated table.

The formula

Tax = invoice price × slab rate − any notified rebate. For a commercial vehicle, the formula is rate per seat or per weight band × the period being paid.

Check the inputs

Make sure the tool asks for fuel type and vehicle class. Electric, CNG and diesel vehicles are often taxed differently from petrol ones, and a calculator that ignores fuel will miss that.

Can a road tax calculator India tool give the Punjab figure?

A general road tax calculator India tool gives a rough figure for Punjab only if it carries Punjab’s current slab. Most such tools hold one table per state and are updated irregularly. Use them to compare states, then confirm the Punjab number with the dealer or RTO before you budget for it.

Good for comparing states

If you are choosing where to register, a national calculator shows the gap between states quickly. Our guide to the road tax calculator explains the method and the state-wise figures we hold.

Not proof of payment

A calculator result has no legal value.

Car road tax India: how Punjab compares with neighbours

Car road tax India differs from state to state because each state sets its own. Punjab’s neighbour Haryana publishes clear price bands, and the national BH series has fixed central rates. Comparing them helps you read a Punjab quote, though it does not tell you Punjab’s own rate.

SchemeHow a private car is taxedRates (as reported)
HaryanaOne-time, by ex-showroom price5% up to ₹6 lakh; 8% from ₹6 lakh to ₹20 lakh; 10% above ₹20 lakh
BH seriesPaid for 2 years at a time8% up to ₹10 lakh; 10% from ₹10 lakh to ₹20 lakh; 12% above; diesel +2%, electric −2%

For Haryana’s rebates and commercial rates, see our Haryana road tax guide.

The BH option

BH series registration is open only to eligible employees who move between states, so most Punjab buyers still pay the state tax.

How is four wheeler tax charged in Punjab?

Four wheeler tax in Punjab splits into two tracks. A private car pays once on its price. A four-wheeled taxi, maxi cab or goods vehicle is a transport vehicle and pays for each tax period, with the amount tied to seats or weight. The class printed on the RC decides which track applies.

Private car track

Petrol, diesel, CNG and electric cars are all charged at registration. Any fuel-based rebate depends on a current state notification, so ask the RTO before assuming one applies.

Transport track

A car registered as a taxi carries a yellow plate and a transport class on the RC. Its tax is due again at each period, along with permit and fitness renewals.

What are car registration charges in Punjab?

Car registration charges in Punjab include fees fixed by the Central Motor Vehicles Rules plus the state tax. The central part is small: a private car’s registration fee is reported at ₹600, and a smart card RC adds ₹200. The road tax is a separate, much larger line.

ItemCentral fee (as reported)
Registration of a private car₹600
Temporary registration₹150 to ₹200
Smart card registration certificate₹200
Renewal of a private car after 15 years₹5,000
Renewal of a motorcycle after 15 years₹1,000
Source: Car registration fees (MotoMotar), 2022 renewal fee change (Autocar India). Checked October 2026.

Why the fee is the same everywhere

These amounts come from central rules and apply in every state. Punjab may add service or postal charges, which appear on the Vahan fee screen.

Temporary registration

A temporary registration lets you drive a new car home before the permanent number is issued. The permanent registration and the tax follow at the RTO.

These sit on top of the state tax and are small next to it.

Which RTO charges in Punjab come on top of tax?

RTO charges in Punjab for a new vehicle usually include the registration fee, the smart card RC, high security registration plates and, if the vehicle is financed, a hypothecation entry. Each is small, but together they add a few thousand rupees to the on-road price, so ask the dealer to list them one by one.

Plates and loan entries

High security plates are fitted by the dealer on new vehicles. A hypothecation entry records the lender on the RC and must be removed after the loan closes.

Charges that are not the RTO’s

Handling, logistics or “documentation” fees on a quote are dealer charges, not government fees.

Why are car registration charges in Chandigarh different?

Car registration charges in Chandigarh follow the Union Territory’s own rules, not Punjab’s. Chandigarh is the capital of both Punjab and Haryana but is run by its own administration, and its Registering and Licensing Authority registers vehicles on CH-01 to CH-04 numbers. A Mohali or Zirakpur address means a Punjab RTO and Punjab tax.

Your address decides

The RTO is chosen by the owner’s address, not the dealer’s. A Mohali resident who buys from a Chandigarh showroom still registers in Punjab.

How is commercial vehicle road tax charged in Punjab?

Commercial vehicle road tax in Punjab is a periodic tax, not a one-time payment. Taxis, buses, school vans and trucks pay for a set period, and the amount depends on seating capacity, gross weight or the type of permit. Vahan shows the period and the next due date after every payment.

Seats and weight

Passenger vehicles are taxed by seats, with the driver not counted. Goods vehicles are taxed by weight band. The RC records both, so a wrong entry there changes the tax.

Permit is separate

A permit decides where a vehicle may operate; tax keeps it legal on the road. Each has its own fee and renewal date, and both must be current.

What is Punjab state tax for taxi owners?

Punjab state tax for taxi owners is the periodic tax for a cab’s seat band, paid on top of the permit fee. We could not confirm the current per-seat amount from an official source. Your RTO or the Vahan tax screen shows the figure and the period covered when you enter the cab’s PB number.

Taxi codes

Wikipedia’s list of RTO codes notes that PB-01 is used for taxi vehicles from Punjab as well as rental cars in Chandigarh; confirm this with the Transport Department before relying on it.

Trips into other states

A Punjab taxi that crosses into Himachal, Haryana or Delhi may owe that state’s entry tax unless its permit covers it. Our guide to check post tax explains how such payments work.

State tax for commercial vehicles crossing into Punjab

State tax for commercial vehicles registered elsewhere is charged when they operate in Punjab without a permit that covers it. Two insurer guides list ₹200 for a tractor, car or bus with up to 10 passengers and ₹1,500 for other motor vehicles, but neither gives a notification date or validity period, so treat these as indicative only.

Paying before entry

Entry tax for outside vehicles is usually paid on the Vahan check post service before the trip, or at a border counter.

National permits

Vehicles on an all-India or national permit pay an authorisation fee that may cover state tax. Check the permit terms before paying twice.

Do you pay Punjab road tax for other state vehicle use?

Punjab road tax for other state vehicle owners depends on how long the vehicle stays. A private car visiting Punjab pays nothing extra. Under section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, a vehicle kept in another state for more than 12 months must take a new registration there, and Punjab tax is then charged.

Timeline of Punjab road tax for other state vehicle owners who move to Punjab
Start early: the NOC and refund each take time at different offices.

Steps when you move in

Get a no objection certificate from the old state, apply for registration at your Punjab RTO, pay the Punjab tax and receive a PB number. Then apply to the old state for a refund of unused tax.

Proof to carry

Carry the old RC, the NOC, insurance, PUC and Punjab address proof.

Can you pay Punjab tax online?

Yes. Punjab tax online payment runs through Vahan citizen services, the national registration system run by NIC for the Transport Ministry. You select Punjab, enter the PB number and verify the vehicle with the chassis digits and an OTP. Some older guides still point to a separate state payment portal; use Vahan first.

What you can do online

You can pay tax that is due, view the “tax valid upto” date, check a pending payment and reprint a receipt. Transport owners can pay several periods ahead.

When it will not work

If Vahan says the service is not available for your vehicle, that class is not enabled online. Pay at the RTO counter with the RC and insurance.

Punjab road tax online: step by step on Vahan

Paying Punjab road tax online takes about five minutes if your mobile number on the vehicle record is current. The same flow works for a taxi’s periodic payment or a one-time tax raised after re-registration. Keep the RC, insurance details and phone with you before you start.

  1. Open Vahan. Go to Vahan citizen services and choose Punjab, or enter the PB registration number.
  2. Pick the tax service. From the list of online services, select the option to pay vehicle tax.
  3. Confirm the vehicle. Type the last five characters of the chassis number and enter the OTP sent to the registered mobile.
  4. Check the tax screen. Look at the tax mode, the period covered, any arrears and the total before you continue.
  5. Pay and keep the receipt. Pay by net banking, card or UPI and save the e-receipt as a PDF.

Do old Punjab vehicles pay an extra environment levy at renewal?

Several states add a green tax when an old vehicle’s registration is renewed, and Punjab is often named among them. We could not confirm Punjab’s current schedule or amounts. If a green tax applies to your vehicle, it appears as a separate line on the Vahan fee screen when you apply to renew a 15-year-old registration.

What renewal costs centrally

The central renewal fee for a private car after 15 years is ₹5,000, and ₹1,000 for a motorcycle. Any state green tax and the fitness test fee come on top.

Where to read more

Our green tax for car guide explains how the levy works across states and which vehicles are usually exempt.

What is green tax in Delhi and does it touch Punjab vehicles?

People searching green tax in Delhi usually mean the environment charge levied on commercial vehicles entering the capital, or the age limits on old cars. We did not verify the current amounts, so check the Delhi Transport Department before a trip. A Punjab private car is not taxed for visiting Delhi.

Age limits matter more

Delhi bars diesel cars over 10 years and petrol cars over 15 years. An old PB car can be stopped in Delhi even though its Punjab tax is paid.

Commercial trips

A Punjab truck or taxi heading to Delhi should check both the entry charge and any permit needed, before setting off.

Which car tax changes should Punjab owners watch?

Car tax changes that affect Punjab owners come from three places: state notifications that revise slabs or rebates, central rule changes to registration and renewal fees, and GST changes that move the invoice price on which tax is worked out. Any of these can change your bill without the Act itself changing.

Central fee changes

The renewal fee for a 15-year-old car rose to ₹5,000 from 1 April 2022 under a central amendment.

Price changes

Because the tax is a share of the price, a GST cut or a price rise changes the tax too, even if the rate stays the same.

Vehicle transfer fees calculator India: what a Punjab buyer pays

A vehicle transfer fees calculator India tool adds up the central transfer fee, the smart card charge and any state charges when a used vehicle changes owner. Road tax is not charged again on a simple transfer within Punjab, but any unpaid tax must be cleared before the RTO will approve it.

Check dues first

Look up the vehicle on Vahan before paying the seller. Tax arrears, challans or an open loan entry will hold up the transfer.

Fees in detail

Punjab road tax questions

Is Punjab road tax paid every year on a private car?

No. A private car or two-wheeler registered in Punjab pays a one-time tax at registration. Transport vehicles such as taxis, buses and trucks pay for each tax period.

What is the current Punjab road tax rate for a new car?

We could not confirm the current percentage from an official Punjab source in October 2026, and private guides disagree. The dealer's Vahan entry or your RTO gives the exact figure.

Which law covers MV tax in Punjab?

The Punjab Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1924. Rates are set under the Act by state notifications, which is why figures change over time.

Yes, through Vahan citizen services for a PB registered vehicle, provided the online tax service is enabled for that vehicle class. Otherwise pay at the RTO counter.

Do I pay Punjab tax if I bring a Delhi or Haryana car to Punjab?

A visiting private car does not. If you keep it in Punjab for more than 12 months, section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act requires re-registration here, and Punjab tax is then charged.
