In short

Road tax Jharkhand owners pay is the state motor vehicle tax under the Jharkhand Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 2001. Insurer guides report about 6% of the pre-GST price for a new car or bike, collected at registration. You can pay dues on Vahan with the JH number and an OTP, or at your RTO. Confirm the amount on the Vahan tax screen.

What is road tax Jharkhand and who pays it?

Road tax Jharkhand owners pay is the state’s charge for keeping a motor vehicle on its roads. The person named on the registration certificate is liable. For a new vehicle the dealer usually collects it with the registration papers, and the payment is then recorded against the JH number on Vahan.

Figures come from an insurer guide, not a state notification we could open.

When it falls due

Guides say the tax is due at registration. Some vehicle types may choose a lifetime tax or yearly payments; transport vehicles pay for each period.

Who runs it

The Department of Transport, based at the FFP Building in Dhurwa, Ranchi, handles registration, licences and tax through its district RTOs.

Which law governs Jharkhand motor vehicle taxation?

Jharkhand motor vehicle taxation comes under the Jharkhand Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 2001, passed soon after the state was carved out of Bihar. The Act lets the state government fix and change rates through schedules and notifications, so the percentage can move without the Act itself being rewritten.

Schedules hold the rates

Guides say Schedule 1 lists the two-wheeler tax. Car, goods and passenger rates sit in other schedules.

What the central law adds

Registration, transfer and the 12-month rule for outside vehicles come from the central Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, not the state Act.

What rates do guides report for road tax Jharkhand?

We could not open a Jharkhand notification while preparing this page in October 2026, because the state transport site refused connections. One insurer guide reports the figures below. Treat them as a starting estimate only; the amount Vahan calculates for your vehicle is the one that counts.

Vehicle or caseReported tax
New two-wheeler (up to 1 year old)6% of cost excluding GST
New car6% of purchase price excluding GST
Pre-owned carAn extra 3%
Car priced above ₹15 lakh (pre-GST)Higher charge; guide says an extra 15%, wording unclear
Battery-operated vehicle25% rebate on the tax

Why we flag the top slab

The guide’s “extra 15%” for costly cars is ambiguous: it could mean 15 points more or 15% more tax. Ask the dealer to show the tax line on its own.

GST is left out

The percentage is reported on the price before GST, not the full invoice.

How is tax worked out for an older or used vehicle?

When a vehicle is registered in Jharkhand after it is already a year or more old, guides say the tax is a share of the full registration-time amount. The share falls as the vehicle ages. This mostly matters for vehicles brought in from another state.

Age of vehicleShare of full tax (reported)
1 to 2 years95%
2 to 3 years90%
4 to 5 years80%
6 to 7 years70%
9 to 10 years55%
Over 10 years50%
Source: Age-based percentages (Acko). Checked October 2026.

Years in between

The share drops five points for each year of age, so a 3-to-4-year-old vehicle is reported at 85%.

Proof of age

The RTO goes by the date of first registration on the old RC, not the purchase date you remember.

Do electric vehicles get a tax rebate in Jharkhand?

Battery-operated vehicles are reported to receive a 25% rebate on Jharkhand road tax. That is a reduction, not a full waiver, so an electric scooter or car still carries a tax line on the quote. No notification date is given for the rebate, so check that it still applies before you buy.

Where it shows

A valid rebate is applied on the Vahan fee screen at registration. If the dealer quote shows full tax on an EV, ask why.

Hybrids

The guide does not say whether hybrids qualify. Ask the RTO.

What does Jharkhand tax mean for a vehicle owner?

People searching Jharkhand tax often mean several different levies. For a vehicle owner the main one is motor vehicle tax collected by the Transport Department. Income tax, property tax and GST belong to other departments and are not paid through Vahan, even though GST is part of your showroom price.

Levies you may meet

A JH owner may pay the one-time or periodic motor vehicle tax, a green tax on an old vehicle, and another state’s entry tax on a commercial trip.

Not a tax

Traffic fines are penalties, not tax. They are paid through the challan system, which our e-challan Jharkhand guide covers.

How does vahan tax Jharkhand work?

Vahan tax Jharkhand means the tax record held on Vahan, the national registration database run by NIC for the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Every JH vehicle’s tax mode, amount paid and “tax valid upto” date sits there, so police and RTO staff can check it by number.

What the record shows

You can see the tax period, any arrears and past receipts.

Older state portal

Older guides describe a Tax Payment tab on jhtransport.gov.in with OTP verification. That site did not load for us, so start on Vahan.

Online road tax payment Jharkhand: step by step

Online road tax payment Jharkhand owners make on Vahan takes a few minutes if the mobile number on the vehicle record is current. Keep the RC, insurance details and phone ready. The same flow covers a taxi’s periodic tax and a one-time tax raised after re-registration.

  1. Open Vahan. Go to Vahan citizen services and choose Jharkhand, or type the JH registration number.
  2. Select the tax service. From the online services list, pick the option to pay vehicle tax.
  3. Verify the vehicle. Enter the last five characters of the chassis number and the OTP sent to the registered mobile.
  4. Read the tax screen. Check the tax mode, the period covered, any arrears or penalty, and the total.
  5. Pay and save the receipt. Pay by net banking, card or UPI and download the e-receipt as a PDF.

Keep the phone linked to the RC nearby, because the OTP goes only there.

Debited but no receipt

Do not pay a second time. Check the pending transaction status after an hour or two, then contact your bank.

Lost the receipt

Reprint it from the same Vahan services menu.

What does online road tax Jharkhand need before you start?

Online road tax Jharkhand payment fails most often for simple reasons: an old mobile number on the record, lapsed insurance or a vehicle class not enabled online. Sorting these first saves a trip to the RTO.

Mobile number

The OTP reaches only the number linked to the vehicle. Update it through the RTO or the Vahan mobile update service.

Insurance and PUC

A lapsed policy can block the payment.

Can you make a Jharkhand road tax payment at the RTO?

Yes. A Jharkhand road tax payment can be made at the counter of your district RTO, such as JH-01 Ranchi, JH-05 Jamshedpur or JH-10 Dhanbad. Guides say to bring KYC and registration documents and fill the tax form; Form 20 is named in one guide, but confirm the form at the counter.

When the counter is needed

Use it when Vahan says the service is not available for your vehicle, or when the amount needs an officer’s review.

Disputes

If you think the tax is wrong, raise it with the taxing officer at the RTO before paying.

What happens if the tax is paid late?

Guides say Jharkhand sets the late-payment penalty, but it cannot exceed 100% of the tax due. On ₹1,500 of tax, for example, the penalty would be at most ₹1,500. Vahan adds any penalty to the dues screen automatically.

Other effects

Unpaid tax blocks transfer, NOC and other RTO services until it is cleared.

Fines on the road

Driving with tax unpaid can also draw a police fine under the Motor Vehicles Act.

How does Jharkhand border tax work for outside vehicles?

Jharkhand border tax applies mainly to commercial vehicles registered in other states that operate in Jharkhand without a permit covering it. A private car on a visit does not pay. We found no current Jharkhand entry-tax amount, so check the figure on the Vahan check post service before the trip.

A trip and a house move are taxed in very different ways.

Paying before entry

Choose Jharkhand as the visiting state, enter the vehicle number, calculate the tax and save the receipt. Our guide to check post tax explains the flow.

Tourist permits

Vehicles on an all-India tourist permit may be exempt; check the permit terms.

Where does MoRTH vehicle registration fit in?

MoRTH vehicle registration rules set the national framework that Jharkhand follows: registration fees, smart card RCs and the Vahan database. The Ministry fixes central fees, such as the reported ₹600 registration fee for a private car and ₹200 for a smart card RC. Jharkhand’s road tax is added on top.

Central versus state

The Centre decides how a vehicle is registered; Jharkhand decides how much tax it pays.

BH series

Eligible employees who move often can choose BH registration, which follows central rates instead of Jharkhand’s.

When must an other-state vehicle be re-registered in Jharkhand?

Under section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, a vehicle kept in another state for more than 12 months must take a new registration there. If you move to Jharkhand with a car on outside plates, get an NOC from the old RTO, apply at your JH office and pay the age-based tax.

Refund from the old state

Apply to the old state for a refund of unused tax. Each state has its own form and time limit.

Documents

Carry the old RC, NOC, insurance, PUC and Jharkhand address proof.

Is an extra levy charged on old Jharkhand vehicles?

Guides report a green tax of 10% of the tax for transport vehicles older than 12 years and personal vehicles older than 15 years. It is charged when the registration or fitness is renewed. We could not confirm the current schedule, so check the Vahan fee screen at renewal.

Exempt vehicles

Vehicles used only for agriculture are listed as exempt from road tax.
