VIP number plate price: state fees, auctions and slabs

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 24 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

The vip number plate price is set by each state, not by the Centre. A state notifies a minimum or reserve price for each group of numbers, such as ₹5 lakh for 0001 on a car in Delhi and Haryana, and popular numbers then go to an online auction. The final price is the winning bid, which can be many times the floor.

Key takeaways

  • Every state publishes its own reserve price list; the same number costs different amounts in Delhi, Haryana and Maharashtra.
  • In Delhi and Haryana, 0001 starts at ₹5 lakh for a private car; Maharashtra charges ₹5 lakh, or ₹6 lakh in Mumbai, Pune and other busy districts.
  • Popular numbers are sold by e-auction, so the winning bid often runs far above the floor.
  • The registration or application fee is usually non-refundable, while bid security is returned to losing bidders.
  • A VIP number is tied to the vehicle record; it cannot legally be bought from a private seller.

What is the VIP number plate price in India?

The VIP number plate price in India is a state fee for a registration number of your choice. Each state sets a reserve price for groups of numbers, and the most popular ones go to auction. So a 0001 can start at ₹5 lakh in one state and much lower in another, and still sell for more.

VIP number plate price slabs in Delhi from 0001 down to any other choice number
These are opening floors; the auction decides the final amount.

Floor price and final price

The notified amount is a floor, not a tag price. If only one person applies, they usually pay that floor. If several people want the same number, an online bid decides it, and the winner pays the highest bid.

Who sets the rates

Rates come from each state’s motor vehicle rules, made under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. MoRTH and NIC run the Vahan software that hosts the auctions, but they do not fix the slab amounts.

What counts as a VIP number plate?

A VIP number plate is simply a registration mark with digits people find special: 0001, 0007, 0786, 9999, or a pattern like 1111. Legally it is an ordinary registration number. The only difference is that the owner paid a fee to pick it instead of taking the next number in line.

What does not change

A VIP number gives no legal privilege on the road. The plate must still be a standard high security registration plate with the same font, size and colour as any other.

Is a VIP no plate the same as a fancy number?

Yes. VIP no plate, fancy number, choice number, special number and preferential mark all describe the same service. States use different words in their rules, but the idea is the same: you pay extra to pick a registration number out of its normal turn.

Words used by each state

Delhi’s rules say registration mark of choice, Haryana’s say preferential registration mark, and Kerala calls them fancy numbers. The Vahan portal labels the service fancy number booking.

VIP number vehicle owners still follow the rules

A VIP number vehicle pays the same road tax, insurance and fines as any other. The extra fee buys only the digits.

What decides the price of 0009?

The price of 0009 depends on which state the vehicle is registered in and on how many people bid for it. States treat 0009 as a premium number because nine is seen as lucky, so it sits in the second or third slab of most price lists, just below 0001.

Slab first, auction second

The state slab gives the opening amount. If two or more applicants choose the same 0009 in the same series, the online auction sets the final price.

0009 number price in Delhi, Haryana and Maharashtra

The 0009 number price starts at different floors in three states whose rules we checked. Delhi places 0002 to 0009 in its second category, Haryana groups 0009 with 0002 and 0007, and Maharashtra put 0009 in its premium group in 2024. The card below compares the floors for private four-wheelers.

Comparison of the 0009 number price floor in Delhi, Haryana and Maharashtra
The same four digits start at very different amounts in each state.

Delhi, Haryana and Maharashtra floors

For cars, Delhi’s floor is ₹3 lakh, Haryana’s is ₹1.5 lakh and Maharashtra’s is ₹2.5 lakh. These are minimums; the final amount can be higher after bidding.

Two-wheelers

Maharashtra charges ₹50,000 for 0009 on a two- or three-wheeler. Delhi’s 2014 slabs apply to four-wheelers, so check the current Delhi notice for bikes.

What is the 9999 number plate price?

The 9999 number plate price has a wide range. Delhi lists 9999 in category 3 with a floor of ₹2 lakh. Haryana puts it in its ₹50,000 group. Maharashtra raised 9999 to ₹2.5 lakh for four-wheelers in 2024. Bids can push any of these higher.

Why 9999 is priced high

Repeated digits are easy to remember and popular on premium cars. States that see heavy demand put them in a higher slab.

Other repeat numbers

1111, 7777 and 9999 sit in the same group in Delhi. Our 1111 number plate price guide looks at that number in more detail.

0008 number price: which slab does it fall in?

The 0008 number price follows the single-digit group in most states. In Delhi it shares the ₹3 lakh floor with 0002 to 0009. In Haryana it falls in the ₹1 lakh group with 0003 to 0006. People also search 0008 number plate price; it is the same fee.

Haryana splits the single digits

Haryana charges more for 0002, 0007 and 0009 than for 0008. That is a demand choice, not a mistake.

Check before bidding

Your state may group 0008 differently. Open the price list for your RTO on the fancy portal before you pay.

0002 to 0006 number plate price: the single-digit slab

The 0002 number plate price and 0003 number plate price sit in the single-digit slab, as do the 0004 number plate price, 0005 number plate price and 0006 number plate price. Delhi starts all of them at ₹3 lakh for a car. Haryana starts 0002 at ₹1.5 lakh and 0003 to 0006 at ₹1 lakh. Searches for 0005 number price lead to the same slabs.

Quiet auctions

In some regions 0005 or 0006 draw fewer bidders, so they often sell near the floor. The registration fee and payment deadline stay the same.

0011, 0100 and 0111 number plate price

The 0011 number plate price, 0100 number plate price and 0111 number plate price sit in middle slabs. In Delhi, 0011 falls in category 3 at ₹2 lakh, while 0100 and 0111 are in category 4 at ₹1 lakh. Haryana charges ₹75,000 for 0011 and 0100 and ₹50,000 for 0111.

Maharashtra’s grouping

Maharashtra placed 0011 in its large 189-number group, at ₹25,000 for a four-wheeler and ₹6,000 for a two-wheeler, according to the 2024 report.

Patterns that cost more

Round numbers and simple patterns are priced above ordinary choice numbers but well below single digits.

2222, 3333 and 5555 number plate price

The 2222 number plate price, 3333 number plate price and 5555 number plate price follow the repeat-digit group. Delhi lists all three in category 4 at ₹1 lakh. Haryana places them in its ₹50,000 group. The 0555 number plate price follows the same Delhi and Haryana floors, as do 0444, 0666 and 0888.

Same number, two states

A 5555 in Delhi starts at double the Haryana floor, so the state of registration matters more than the digits.

4141, 8055 and 0264 number plate price

The 4141 number plate price, 8055 number plate price and 0264 number plate price are usually the lowest choice fee. In Delhi, any number not listed in a higher category costs ₹20,000. Haryana also sets ₹20,000 for an ordinary choice mark on a private vehicle.

Why people choose these numbers

Numbers like 8055 or 4141 can look like a name on the plate, and 0264 may be a birthday or a date. They are not special to the state, so they stay in the basic group.

First come, first served

When no one else applies, the number goes to the first applicant at the basic fee, without bidding.

How does a fancy number Punjab auction work?

A fancy number Punjab booking runs through the national Parivahan portal. The state transport department puts registration numbers from each series up for e-auction, and the highest bidder gets the number after paying the balance. Unsold numbers are later allotted at the reserve price on a first-come basis.

Reserve price in Punjab

Published Punjab reserve prices conflict across sources, so we do not list them here. Check the current notice on the Punjab transport department site before bidding.

Why bids rise fast

Punjab has heavy demand for 0001 and other single digits, and auctions often attract many bidders in cities like Ludhiana and Mohali.

VIP car number Punjab: what have top plates fetched?

A VIP car number Punjab buyers chase is often 0001, and it can sell far above the floor. The Tribune reported that PB 10 KD 0001 fetched ₹18.73 lakh in a Ludhiana online auction, against a reserve of ₹1 lakh. That shows how much the final bid can move.

VIP car number price list in Punjab

There is no single fixed vip car number price list in Punjab; prices come from the current state notice and each auction. Use the reserve list on the portal as the starting figure.

What are the fancy number Haryana reserve prices?

The fancy number Haryana rules were revised in November 2022. A private (non-transport) vehicle bids on preferential numbers through e-auction, starting from a reserve price set in six groups. The top number, 0001, starts at ₹5 lakh, and any other choice number at ₹20,000.

Fancy car number Haryana for transport vehicles

A fancy car number Haryana taxi or goods vehicle owner wants follows a different route. Transport vehicles do not bid. They get preferential numbers on a first-come, first-served basis by paying an additional fee, which is lower than the private car reserve.

Old series car number for sale in Haryana

Ads offering an old series car number for sale in Haryana usually mean selling a car that carries the number. The number itself cannot be sold apart from the vehicle record. Haryana’s rules list a ₹2,000 fee to transfer or change an assigned mark, through the RTO only.

An assigned mark can be held for up to 180 days without a vehicle, after which it returns to the transport department.

The MVD Kerala fancy number service is run by the state Motor Vehicles Department through an online auction. Numbers fall into six categories with base prices from ₹3,000 to ₹1 lakh, and 0001 has the highest base. Bids start from that base and rise with demand.

Show open series and the all available numbers report

The show open series option lists the number series now open at an RTO, and the all available number report lists the free numbers inside it. Together they tell you whether your number is possible right now or whether you must wait for the next series.

Vahan fancy: the national e-auction site

Vahan fancy is the fancy number module of Vahan, the national vehicle registration system run by NIC for MoRTH. Many states list their choice numbers and run auctions there. It works alongside the RTO’s registration record, so a booked number links straight to your new vehicle.

Vahan 4 fancy

Vahan 4 fancy is the same service on the current Vahan 4 version. Older bookmarks may point elsewhere, so start from parivahan.gov.in.

Vahan choice number vs special number

A vahan choice number and a vahan special number are the same service on the portal. The price depends only on the slab your number falls in.

Which site is the vahan fancy number portal?

The fancy number portal is the fancy number section of the Vahan site, reached from Parivahan Sewa’s online services. Guides list its address as vahan.parivahan.gov.in/fancy/, with a public login page inside it. Always type the address yourself instead of following links in messages.

Vahan portal fancy number and states

The vahan portal fancy number service only works for states and RTOs that use it. Some states run their own system or a counter process.

Vahan fancy number login

The vahan fancy number login uses an account you create once as a new public user with your mobile number and email. The same login is used to apply, bid, check results and pay the balance, and only gov.in addresses are genuine.

How to book fancy number online?

  2. Choose state, RTO and number. Select where the vehicle will be registered and pick from the open series.

Is number plate bidding refundable?

In number plate bidding, Haryana treats the application fee as non-refundable but returns the 20% bid security to losing bidders within 15 days. A winner who misses the balance deadline forfeits it.

How to get VIP number plates: who is eligible?

On how to get VIP number plates, the basic rule is simple: a new vehicle being registered in the state is eligible, and the applicant must be its registered owner. Some states also allow an existing number to be kept for a new vehicle. Government vehicles and listed officials may get exemptions.

Owner name must match

The applicant name on the booking must match the name on the vehicle invoice and registration papers.

Exemptions in Delhi

Delhi’s rules exempt listed government vehicles and some dignitaries, but a transfer to a non-eligible owner within one year needs the reserve price to be paid.

How to get choice number for car?

On how to get choice number for car, book through the fancy portal before the car is registered. Choose the number, pay the fee and wait for the result. A number with no other applicant is usually allotted at the basic fee. A popular number goes to auction.

VIP car number options

A VIP car number like 0001 or 0786 needs a bid in most states. An ordinary choice number, such as a birth year, usually costs the lowest slab.

Fancy number for car on a budget

A fancy number for car does not have to cost lakhs. Delhi and Haryana charge ₹20,000 for an ordinary choice number.

How to get fancy number for bike?

On how to get fancy number for bike, use the same fancy portal but choose the two-wheeler category. Bike fees are lower in states that list them separately. In Maharashtra, 0001 for a two-wheeler costs ₹1 lakh. Popular numbers can still go to auction.

How to get choice number for bike

On how to get choice number for bike, apply when the dealer confirms the RTO, then pay the fee and give the allotment letter to the dealer.

Bike choice number timing

A bike choice number series moves fast in busy cities, so apply early.

What is the bike number plate price for a VIP number?

The bike number plate price for a VIP number has two parts: the state fee for the digits and the HSRP plate charge. A vip number for bike costs far less than on a car: in Maharashtra, 0001 is ₹1 lakh for a two-wheeler against ₹5 lakh or more for a car. The scooty number plate price follows the same two-wheeler fees.

Fancy number plate bike costs

A fancy number plate bike owner in Maharashtra pays the HSRP fitment charge of ₹450 plus GST for the plate, separate from the number fee.

Two-wheeler fancy number tips

A two wheeler fancy number or fancy bike number plate is easier to win in smaller RTOs, where fewer people bid. A fancy number for bike in Delhi follows the current Delhi notice, since the 2014 slabs cover cars.

How to check number plate value?

To check number plate value, open your state’s price list or the fancy portal and find which group your number falls in. That group gives the floor price. The real value of a popular number is the winning bid, which you only learn after the auction.

Registration plate value

A registration plate value is not an asset you can sell. It stays with the vehicle record and goes with the car if you sell it.

Car number plate price check

A car number plate price check is easiest on the portal, which shows the amount due when you choose a number.

Fancy number price list caveats

A fancy number price list can change with a new notification. Delhi’s list dates from 2014, Haryana’s from 2022 and Maharashtra’s from 2024.

Number price vs final price

The number price in the table is the starting point. Bids for 0001 often end several times higher.

VIP number plate list by price slab

A VIP number plate list groups numbers by how much they start at. Single digits come first, then two-digit and repeat numbers, then patterns, and finally any other choice number. The order is similar across states, but the exact members of each group differ.

Fancy vehicle numbers list

A fancy vehicle numbers list in one state may include 0786 or 1313, while another leaves them out. The portal keeps a car fancy numbers list and a bike fancy numbers list separately, and a vip car numbers list shows what is still free in the current car series.

Fancy number search before you bid

A fancy number search on the portal shows whether a number is open, booked or already in auction. Searching before you apply saves the registration fee on a number that is no longer free. Search for two or three backup numbers too.

Fancy number check and availability

A fancy number check after applying shows whether others have bid. Vehicle number availability depends on the series: if your number is not in the current one, wait for the next series. The all available numbers view lists free numbers in one go.

The owner name must match the one used for registration.

Registration number booking papers

For registration number booking, the owner name must match the vehicle invoice exactly, including spelling.

Agent scams

Agents who promise a number for a fee outside the portal often disappear with the money. Pay only on the official site.

Buying a car with a VIP number

The ownership transfer follows the usual Vahan process, and the number stays with the car.

Number plate cost vs the number fee

The number plate cost is the charge for the physical HSRP plate. The number fee is the state charge for picking your digits. They are separate. Searches for no plate price or number plate price often mix the two up.

Number plate price check

For a plate, the price depends on the state and vehicle type. In Maharashtra, HSRP fitment costs ₹745 plus GST for cars.
