Vehicle information check: owner name, RC and Vahan status online

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 23 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

Vehicle information for any Indian registration number is held on Vahan, the national vehicle registration database run by MoRTH and NIC. Log in at vahan.parivahan.gov.in or open the mParivahan app, enter the full number and you see the maker, model, fuel, registration date, insurance and PUC validity, RC status and a partly masked owner name. Full owner records stay with the RTO.

Key takeaways

  • Use only vahan.parivahan.gov.in, the mParivahan app or the RTO for official vehicle records.
  • The public search shows a masked owner name; addresses and phone numbers are never shown.
  • Vahan status pages track applications such as transfer, duplicate RC and hypothecation by application number.
  • Apps that promise a full owner address are copying or reselling data; avoid them.
  • Several searches tied to this page, such as GRN, CRN and SBI kiosk, are payment or banking terms, not vehicle services.

What is vehicle information on Vahan?

Vehicle information is the registration record that the RTO creates when a car, bike or truck is registered. Every record sits on Vahan, the national vehicle registration database built by NIC for the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). Police, insurers, banks and buyers all read the same record.

Five steps to check vehicle information on the official Vahan portal by registration number
The official search takes about two minutes once you have an OTP login.

Who keeps the record

The registering RTO owns and updates the record. When you transfer ownership, change address, add a loan or renew registration, the RTO approves the change and Vahan updates for the whole country.

Why the record matters

The record proves that a vehicle is legally registered and shows whether its insurance, PUC and fitness are current. Before buying, lending or insuring a vehicle, it is the first thing to check.

Check vehicle details on Vahan: how does it work?

To check vehicle details on the official portal, you sign in once with a mobile OTP and then search by registration number. The result opens on one screen, and the steps below take about two minutes once your login is set up.

  1. Open the Vahan portal. Go to vahan.parivahan.gov.in and choose the citizen option for vehicle details.
  2. Log in with OTP. Register or sign in with your mobile number and the OTP sent to it.
  3. Choose Know Your Vehicle Details. Pick the details search from the citizen menu.
  4. Enter the registration number. Type the full number without spaces and fill the captcha.
  5. Read the record. Check the RC status, insurance, PUC and fitness dates shown.

Signing up for the first time

New users create a basic account with a mobile number and email. Keep the same number for later searches, because the portal ties lookups to the login.

If the portal is slow

Vahan gets heavy traffic during office hours. Try early morning or late evening, and refresh the captcha instead of resubmitting the same form many times.

Vahan vehicle details: which fields appear?

A Vahan vehicle details result shows the vehicle’s identity, its validity dates and its legal status. Personal data is trimmed: the owner’s name is partly hidden, and no address or phone number appears. The table lists the fields most people look for.

Table of vahan vehicle details fields shown after a registration number search
Dates matter most: they tell you what is expired or about to lapse.
FieldWhat it tells youUse for a buyer
Owner name (masked)First letters of the registered ownerConfirms the seller’s name loosely
Owner serial numberHow many owners so farFirst-hand or resale
Maker and modelBrand, model, variant, fuelMatches the vehicle in front of you
Registration dateWhen the RC was first issuedAge of the vehicle
Insurance valid up toPolicy end dateUninsured use is an offence
PUC valid up toPollution certificate dateNeeded on the road
Fitness valid up toFitness or registration validityShows renewal is due
RC statusActive, suspended, blacklisted and similarBlocks sale if not active

Fields that vary by vehicle

Transport vehicles show fitness and permit dates, while private cars show registration validity. Electric vehicles show the fuel as electric and may list battery details.

What never appears

Chassis and engine numbers are partly hidden. Address, phone and Aadhaar details are never part of the public result.

What do vehicle RC details show?

Vehicle RC details are the same facts printed on the registration certificate, plus live status that the printed card cannot show. The paper or smart card freezes data on the day of issue; the online record shows today’s position, including any later loan, transfer or block.

Paper RC versus live record

If the card and Vahan disagree, the online record is the one police and RTOs act on. A mismatch usually means a change was approved after the card was printed. For your own vehicle, our guide to the RC card explains printing and dispatch.

Hypothecation entry

If a loan is open, the financier’s name appears. After you repay, the lender issues an NOC and the RTO removes the entry.

Which ways give vehicle information by number?

You can get vehicle information by number through four official routes: the Vahan portal, the mParivahan app, the Vahan SMS lookup and a visit to the RTO. Each shows a different depth of data, and only the RTO can release the full owner record.

RouteWhat you needWhat you getBest for
Vahan portalLogin with mobile OTPFull public record, masked ownerDetailed check on a computer
mParivahan appPhone and OTPSame public record, virtual RCQuick check on the road
SMS lookupAny mobile with SMSShort summaryNo internet
RTO requestWritten application and reasonCertified extractLegal or insurance need

Choosing the right route

For a buying decision use the portal or app, because they show insurance, PUC and status together. Use the RTO only when you need a certified copy for court, insurance or police.

Routes to avoid

Unofficial websites that ask you to pay for owner details are not part of the government system. Their data may be outdated or illegally copied.

How to check vehicle owner name by number plate?

To check vehicle owner name by number plate, run the official Vahan or mParivahan search with the number exactly as it appears on the plate. The result shows the owner’s name with most letters masked, which is enough to match a seller but not to identify a stranger.

Reading a masked name

A masked name keeps a few letters visible. Compare it with the name on the seller’s ID and paper RC. If even the visible letters do not match, stop the deal.

When the name is fully hidden

Some records show no name at all, for example company or government vehicles. That is normal and does not mean the record is wrong.

How to know owner name by vehicle number?

If you want to know owner name by vehicle number on your phone, the mParivahan app is the fastest route. Its RC search returns the same masked name as the portal, along with the vehicle class and validity dates. The full app guide on mParivahan covers login and virtual RC setup.

Using the app step by step

Open the app, sign in with an OTP, tap the RC search, type the number and submit. The details card loads within seconds when the server is free.

When the app and portal differ

They read the same database, so differences usually come from caching. Close the app, search again, or confirm on the portal.

Can you get vehicle owner details by number plate for free?

Yes, basic vehicle owner details by number plate are free on the official portal and app, but only in masked form. Paid services that promise more are either reselling bulk data or guessing. The comparison below shows the difference.

Comparison of official Vahan lookups and third-party apps for vehicle owner details by number plate
If an app promises an owner's address, treat that as a warning sign.

Why free official data is limited

The government trims personal details to protect owners from stalking, fraud and spam. The masked name and vehicle data are enough to verify a vehicle.

Risks of paid lookups

Reports by digital rights groups have found Vahan and Sarathi data being sold online. Using such data can expose you to legal trouble, and giving these apps your own details adds to the problem. For a plate-focused walkthrough, see vehicle registration details by number plate.

How to get address from vehicle number?

You cannot get address from vehicle number through any public government tool. The address is protected personal data. Only the RTO, police and courts can access it, and the RTO releases it to others only for a lawful reason such as an accident claim or court case.

The lawful route

Write to the registering RTO, explain the reason, attach proof such as an FIR or court notice, and ask for the owner particulars. The RTO decides whether to release them.

Through the police

If a vehicle has damaged your property or hit you, file a police complaint with the number. Police can trace the owner directly from Vahan.

How to check car owner by number plate?

To check car owner by number plate, use the same official search used for any vehicle. Enter the car’s full registration, and the result shows the masked owner, model, fuel and validity dates. This is the right check for used-car deals and parking disputes.

Car number details for a used car

Match the model, colour and fuel shown online with the car in front of you. A petrol car listed as diesel, or a different model, means the plate may not belong to that car.

How to find car details by registration number

If you only need the car’s make, variant and age, the registration number alone is enough. The registration date tells you the age, and the owner serial number shows how many hands the car has passed through.

How to check bike owner name and bike details?

To check bike owner name and bike details, run the same Vahan or app search with the two-wheeler’s number. You get the masked owner name, maker, model, engine capacity class, registration date and insurance date. A quick plate-only check is also covered in our bike no check guide.

How to know bike owner name in a parking dispute

Do not try to trace the rider yourself. Note the number, take a photo and report to the parking operator or police, who can reach the owner.

Bike insurance check

Two-wheelers are often ridden with expired policies. The insurance date in the record tells you whether the bike is covered before you borrow or buy it.

Vehicle number check: which formats work?

A vehicle number check works only when the number is typed in the standard format: state letters, RTO digits, series letters and the unique number, with no spaces or dashes. For example, a plate printed with gaps is entered as one continuous string.

Common format errors

Mixing the letter O with zero, or I with one, is the top reason a search fails. Check the plate closely, especially on fancy fonts.

Number plate check for BH series

BH series plates start with the year and BH instead of a state code. They are searched the same way, as one continuous string. For plate rules in general, see the state code list.

RTO number check: what does the code tell you?

An RTO number check decodes the first part of the plate. The two letters give the state or union territory, and the next two digits identify the registering RTO. That tells you where the vehicle was first registered, even if the owner now lives elsewhere.

State code prefixes used in an RTO number check on Indian number plates
The two digits after the state letters point to the registering RTO.

RTO number plate check for a district

To find which city an RTO code belongs to, look up the state’s RTO list. Each state numbers its offices differently, so the same digits mean different cities in different states.

Why the code matters to a buyer

A vehicle registered in another state may need an NOC and re-registration if it moves permanently. Knowing the code early helps you plan that paperwork.

Vahan SMS number: how does the SMS lookup work?

The Vahan SMS number lets you get a short vehicle summary without internet. Send a message in the format VAHAN, a space, and the full registration number to 7738299899. The reply carries basic details such as model and validity dates.

How the vahan SMS number lookup works with the message format and number
Standard SMS charges may apply, and replies depend on your operator.

Limits of the SMS route

The reply is shorter than the portal result, and replies depend on your mobile operator. Normal SMS charges may apply. The number is widely published by insurers but should be confirmed on parivahan.gov.in.

Owner name by SMS

The SMS reply follows the same privacy rules as the portal. Our page on owner name by SMS explains what the reply contains.

Which is the official RTO vehicle information app?

The official RTO vehicle information app is mParivahan, published by NIC for MoRTH. Many other apps use “RTO” in their name, but they are private products. They usually pull data from public screens and add adverts or paid features on top.

How to spot the real app

Check the developer name on the store listing. It should be the National Informatics Centre. A comparison of private apps is in our RTO app guide.

What the official app adds

Besides search, mParivahan stores your virtual RC and DL, which are accepted as valid digital documents at checks.

Vahan status: what does application status Vahan show?

Vahan status pages show where your RTO application stands, from payment to approval and RC dispatch. You search with the application number printed on the receipt. The application status Vahan screen also shows which office holds the file at each stage.

Timeline of Vahan application status stages from applied to RC dispatched
Each stage shows on the status page with the office that holds the file.

Where to find the application number

It appears on the fee receipt and in the SMS sent after payment. Without it, you can try a search by registration number on some services. Our guide to know your application status covers each service.

Status stuck for long

If a stage does not move for many days, visit the RTO with your receipt. Missing documents or a pending inspection are the usual causes.

What does Vahan RC status mean?

Vahan RC status describes the legal state of the registration. Active means the vehicle can be used, sold and insured normally. Other labels, such as suspended, cancelled or blacklisted, mean the RTO has restricted the vehicle and services will be blocked until the issue is fixed.

Common reasons for a block

Unpaid tax, pending challans, a stolen-vehicle report or an expired registration can each change the status. The RTO record usually names the reason.

Clearing a block

Pay the dues or clear the challans, then apply to the RTO to lift the flag. Keep receipts, since manual approval may be needed.

What is vehicle registration in the Vahan system?

Vehicle registration is the legal act of entering a vehicle into the government record and issuing an RC and number plate. New vehicles are registered through the dealer on Vahan; the RTO approves and allots the number. Our guide to vehicle info on registration explains the full process.

What registration creates

It creates the record that every other search reads: owner, address, vehicle data, tax paid and validity. Every later service edits this one record.

Registration and temporary numbers

A temporary registration lets you drive a new vehicle home before the permanent number is issued. It has its own short validity.

RTO vehicle owner details: when does the RTO share full records?

RTO vehicle owner details, meaning the full name and address, are released only for a lawful purpose. Courts, police and insurers have direct access. A private person must apply in writing and show why they need the data, for example an accident claim.

What to include in the request

Give the registration number, your ID, the reason, and supporting papers such as an FIR, court summons or insurer letter. The RTO may charge a copy fee set by the state.

Using RTO vehicle information responsibly

Data you receive is for that case only. Sharing or publishing it can break privacy and IT laws. For RTO office details, see RTO vehicle information.

How to find vehicle owner details after an accident?

To find vehicle owner details after an accident, note the number, take photos and file a police report straight away. Police trace the owner and insurer from Vahan. Your own insurer can also request the details for a claim.

Hit-and-run cases

Even a partial number helps. Give police the letters you saw, the colour and the model. They can narrow the search using the registration database.

Claims against the other vehicle

The insurer named in the record handles third-party claims. The insurance date in the public search tells you whether the policy was valid on the accident date.

How to know vehicle registration details before buying a used car?

To know vehicle registration details before buying, run the official search, then match every field against the seller’s papers. The checklist below covers the points that most often hide problems in a used vehicle deal.

Checklist of vehicle registration details to confirm before buying a used car or bike
Match the paper RC, the plate and the Vahan record before you pay.

Match the chassis number

Look at the chassis number stamped on the vehicle and compare its visible digits with the record and the RC. A mismatch is a red flag for a stolen or cloned vehicle.

Clear dues before transfer

Pending challans and an open loan stop the transfer. Ask the seller to clear them before payment. The vehicle history guide covers deeper checks.

How to search vehicle owner name safely?

To search vehicle owner name safely, stick to official tools, never pay for owner data, and do not share the result. Most failed searches come from typing errors; the fixes below solve the common ones.

Common errors when you search vehicle owner name online and how to fix them
Most failed searches come from typing errors in the registration number.

Protect your own login

Use your own mobile number for the Vahan login and never share the OTP with anyone offering to search for you.

How to check owner name with car number for a friend

If a friend is buying, ask the seller to show the RTO record on their own phone. That avoids sharing your login and confirms the seller has access to the vehicle’s registered mobile.

Where to find AP vehicle registration number owner details?

For AP vehicle registration number owner details, start with the national Vahan search. Andhra Pradesh also runs its own transport citizen services, and some older AP and Telangana records are easier to find there. Our Telangana registration guide compares both routes.

AP number formats

AP plates start with AP followed by the RTO digits. Enter them without spaces, as with any state.

Telangana numbers

Vehicles registered in Telangana carry their own state prefix. For owner checks in that state, see TS vehicle owner details.

How to see TN vehicle registration owner details?

TN vehicle registration owner details are searched on Vahan like any other state’s records. Tamil Nadu plates start with TN, and the masked owner, model and validity dates appear in the standard result. The state transport department handles corrections and certified extracts.

Chennai and district RTOs

Each TN district has its own RTO code. The code tells you which office to visit for corrections or copies.

Kerala neighbours

Kerala records follow the same national system. See vehicle ownership details in Kerala for state-specific tips.

How does UP RTO vehicle registration owner search work?

A UP RTO vehicle registration owner search uses the national Vahan database, since Uttar Pradesh registrations are recorded there. Enter the UP number, and the result gives the masked owner and vehicle data. UP has a large number of RTO codes, so check the district before visiting an office.

Older UP vehicles

Vehicles registered before full digitisation may need the RTO to update the record before services work online.

Nearby states

For Chhattisgarh numbers, see CG car registration; Rajasthan users can read vehicle owner details by number plate in Rajasthan.

Where is RTO vehicle information Odisha available?

RTO vehicle information Odisha is available on Vahan, where Odisha registrations sit with the OD prefix. Older vehicles may still carry the earlier OR prefix on their plates. The Odisha transport department handles state corrections, and our RTO Odisha vehicle details page covers the local steps.

Searching older OR plates

Type the number exactly as printed. The record keeps the original prefix of that vehicle.

Odisha office visits

For certified owner data, visit the registering Odisha RTO with your reason and ID proof.

Karnataka vehicle details: how to do a Karnataka number plate check?

For Karnataka vehicle details, enter the KA number in the Vahan search or the mParivahan app. A Karnataka number plate check shows the masked owner, model, registration date and validity dates, the same as any state.

Bengaluru RTO codes

Bengaluru has several RTOs, each with its own KA code. The code tells you which office registered the vehicle.

Karnataka traffic fines

Fines in Karnataka are checked through the state police or the national e-challan system, not in the vehicle details result.

FC details: how to do FC checking online?

FC details, the fitness certificate data, appear in the Vahan record as a fitness valid up to date. FC checking matters most for transport vehicles such as taxis, buses and trucks, which need a valid certificate to run. The full renewal process is in our fitness certificate guide.

Private vehicles

For a private car or bike, the date shown is the registration validity. Renewal includes a fitness inspection.

Expired fitness

Running a transport vehicle with an expired FC is an offence and may void insurance. Book the inspection before the date passes.

Vehicle appointment: how do you book a slot for a vehicle service?

A vehicle appointment is booked on Vahan for services that need an inspection or document check at the RTO, such as fitness tests or re-registration. After you apply and pay online, the portal offers available slots at your RTO.

What to carry

Bring the original RC, insurance, PUC, ID proof, the receipt and the vehicle itself if inspection is needed.

Driving test slots

Licence tests are booked on Sarathi instead. See our guide to slot booking.

What is a carriage vehicle or goods transport vehicle?

A carriage vehicle is a transport vehicle that carries passengers or goods for hire. Goods transport vehicles, also called goods carriages, are built or adapted to carry goods. They are registered as transport vehicles with yellow plates and need permits, fitness certificates and commercial insurance.

How the record shows it

The vehicle class in Vahan tells you whether the vehicle is private or transport. A private car used as a taxi breaks permit rules.

Permits

Goods carriages need a permit for the routes they run. Permit dates appear in the transport vehicle record.

7500 kg vehicle list: what can an LMV licence drive?

The 7500 kg vehicle list question comes from the light motor vehicle rule. On 6 November 2024, a Supreme Court Constitution Bench held that an LMV licence holder may drive a transport vehicle with weight under 7,500 kg without a separate endorsement.

Key facts about the 7500 kg vehicle limit for light motor vehicle licence holders
Above the limit, transport licence rules still apply.

Source: Supreme Court ruling, 6 Nov 2024 (Verdictum). Checked October 2026.

How to find the weight

The gross vehicle weight is in the RC and the Vahan record. Check it before you drive an unfamiliar commercial vehicle.

Why insurers care

The ruling upheld the 2017 Mukund Dewangan decision, so insurers cannot reject claims only because the driver held an LMV licence for such a vehicle.

Is there a commercial vehicle loan by government?

There is no single commercial vehicle loan by government paid out directly. Instead, banks lend under government schemes. The main one is the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, which covers transport vehicles used for business, with the Tarun Plus tier going up to ₹20 lakh for repeat borrowers.

Who can apply

Small businesses and self-employed operators apply through banks, NBFCs and MFIs. Lenders decide eligibility, so ask your bank.

Commercial vehicle subsidy scheme

A commercial vehicle subsidy scheme is usually a state programme, such as support for e-rickshaws, electric autos or vehicles for specific communities. Rules change often, so check your state transport or industries department.

Speeding ticket: how are driving tickets checked?

A speeding ticket is issued under section 183 of the Motor Vehicles Act, usually by a speed camera or an officer’s device. Like other driving tickets, it reaches the national e-challan system, linked to your vehicle number. Central fines are shown below; states may notify their own compounding amounts.

VehicleFine for over-speeding
Light motor vehicle₹1,000 to ₹2,000
Medium or heavy passenger or goods vehicle₹2,000 to ₹4,000
Source: MoRTH summary of MV (Amendment) Act 2019 (PIB). Checked October 2026.

Checking a speeding ticket

Search the e-challan portal by vehicle number. The wider list of penalties is in our traffic fines guide.

Disputing a ticket

If the photo shows another vehicle or a wrong plate, use the grievance option on the challan or contact the issuing police.

Gari chalan: where are vehicle fines checked?

Gari chalan is a common Hindi and Bengali way of saying vehicle challan, a traffic fine. It is checked on the national e challan portal, not on the Vahan details page. Search by vehicle number, challan number or DL number.

Why Vahan still matters

Pending challans can block RTO services. Clear them before transfer or renewal.

Paying safely

Pay only on official .gov.in sites. Fake challan SMS links are common.

To check legal notice online for a vehicle, start with the e-challan portal. Challans that went unpaid are sent to a virtual court, which issues a notice. You can see these cases on the virtual courts portal for your state.

Lok Adalat notices

States hold Lok Adalats where many traffic cases are settled together. See our Lok Adalat challan guide.

Notices about accident cases or civil disputes come from regular courts. Their status is checked on the eCourts services portal using the case number.

IDP Japan: can you drive in Japan on an Indian permit?

Yes, for IDP Japan trips an Indian driver can drive with an Indian International Driving Permit, as long as it is issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. Japan’s police say driving is allowed for up to one year from entry, while both the IDP and your Indian licence stay valid.

Do and don't tips for using an international driving permit in Japan from India
Japan accepts only permits issued under the 1949 convention.

International driving permit Japan checklist

Carry the IDP, your original Indian DL and your passport whenever you drive. Rental companies check all three.

International drivers license Japan for residents

If you live in Japan, rules differ. Residents usually need to convert their licence; check with Japanese authorities.

How to apply for an IDP through the RTO?

An IDP RTO application is made in Form 4A to the licensing authority that holds your record. You need a valid Indian DL, passport, visa or ticket, photos and a medical certificate where required. Many states accept the application online on Sarathi, then ask you to visit. For a full guide, see international driving license India.

How to check IDP status

Track it on Sarathi with the application number, the same way as other licence applications.

Get international drivers license online safely

Only the RTO issues a valid IDP in India. Websites selling online-only permits are not recognised by Indian or foreign police.

What are IDP charges and international license fees?

IDP charges are set by the licensing authority. Most sources list an application fee of about ₹1,000, with one-year validity or less if your Indian DL ends sooner. Confirm the amount on Sarathi.

GRN download: how to get a GRN copy?

A GRN download means getting a copy of a state treasury challan with its Government Reference Number. GRN systems such as Maharashtra GRAS and Rajasthan or Haryana eGRAS collect state fees and taxes, including some transport charges.

Quick answers on GRN download, MHGRAS messages and CRN status for payments
Keep every reference number until the service is delivered.

How to find the copy

Use the search challan option on the state’s GRAS portal and enter the GRN. See our GRAS e challan guide.

eGRAS states

Rajasthan and Haryana use eGRAS. See eGRAS login.

What is an MHGRAS message?

An MHGRAS message is an SMS linked to Maharashtra’s GRAS treasury system, usually confirming a payment and its GRN. It is not a Vahan alert. If you did not make a payment, do not click any link in it.

Checking the message

Search the GRN on the official GRAS portal yourself, at gras.mahakosh.gov.in, rather than through a link.

Fake messages

If an SMS asks for card details or an OTP, it is fraud. Report it on cybercrime.gov.in.

CRN status: what does CRN mean on a payment?

CRN status searches usually mean a payment reference number issued by a bank or portal. CRN can stand for customer or common reference number, depending on the system. It is not a Vahan term; Vahan uses an application number and transaction ID.

Finding a CRN payment

Check the receipt or SMS from the portal where you paid, and search there with the CRN.

If money was debited

Wait for the bank to settle, then use the portal’s verify payment option.

Onlinesbi kiosk com: is it a transport website?

No. Onlinesbi kiosk com searches relate to SBI’s banking services, such as kiosk banking at customer service points. It is not a transport website. Transport fees are paid on Vahan or Sarathi through their own payment gateways.

SBI Collect

Some state agencies take fees through SBI Collect. Receipts can be reprinted from the payment history option.

Avoid fake SBI pages

Type the bank’s address yourself. Lookalike pages steal login details.

What is Pawan Nivas?

We found no transport service, RTO office or Parivahan feature called Pawan Nivas. It appears to be a building or residence name. People sometimes type it when they mean Parivahan Sewa.

If you meant Parivahan Sewa

The national portal is parivahan.gov.in. Our Parivahan home page links every service.

Local addresses

For a specific office address, contact your state transport department.

Question question answer: are these licence test questions?

Question question answer searches usually come from people preparing for the learner licence test. The test asks multiple-choice questions on road signs, rules and safe driving. Practice sets are in our learning license test questions guide.

One question answers

Searches for one question answers are about practice papers. Use the official Sarathi mock test.

How the test works

The online test is taken after you apply for a learner licence. Pass marks vary by state.

Vehicle information questions

Is it legal to check someone's vehicle information?

Yes, the basic record on Vahan is public by design so buyers, police and insurers can verify a vehicle. The owner's name is masked and personal contact details are not shown.

Can I find the owner's mobile number from a number plate?

No. Official tools never show phone numbers or addresses. If you need to reach an owner after an accident or for a legal matter, go through the police or the RTO.

Why does the Vahan search say record not found?

Usually the number was typed with spaces or a wrong letter. Very old vehicles that were never moved to the national database may also not appear; ask the registering RTO.

Is the vehicle information on Vahan free?

Yes. Searching on the official Vahan portal and in the mParivahan app is free. Only the normal SMS charge applies if you use the SMS lookup.

How many searches can I do in a day?

The public portal limits repeated lookups from one login to stop data scraping. The exact cap can change, so if you are blocked, try again the next day.

Does the search show if a vehicle is stolen?

Vahan may show a blacklist or other flag on the RC status, but it is not a complete theft register. For stolen vehicle checks, use the police or NCRB vehicle search.

Can I see past owners of a vehicle?

The public search shows the owner serial number, which tells you how many owners the vehicle has had, but not their names. Ask the RTO for a certified extract if needed.

Why is the insurance date on Vahan different from my policy?

Insurers upload policy data to the national record, and updates can lag. Carry your policy copy and ask your insurer to push the update if the gap stays.

Can I check vehicle information for another state's number?

Yes. Vahan is national, so a car registered in Karnataka can be searched from Delhi. A few states also run their own citizen portals alongside it.

Is mParivahan data the same as the Vahan portal?

Yes. The app reads the same national registration database, so the fields match. The app also lets you store a virtual RC for your own vehicle.

What should I do if my own vehicle record is wrong?

Apply for the correction through the matching Vahan service, such as address change or mobile update, or visit the RTO with your RC and ID proof.

Does an IDP show up on Vahan?

No. An international driving permit is a licence document handled through Sarathi and the RTO, not a vehicle record. Vahan only holds registration data.
