Telangana registration and AP vehicle number search: codes, RC and owner details

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 25 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

Telangana registration and Andhra Pradesh registration share one history: until 2014 both used the AP prefix. Today Andhra Pradesh issues AP 39 and AP 40 numbers statewide, while Telangana moved from TS to TG in March 2024. To search an AP vehicle, use the RTA Citizen portal (aprtacitizen.epragathi.org), Vahan or mParivahan; owner names stay masked in public results.

Key takeaways

  • Old plates from AP 09 to AP 36 in Hyderabad and other Telangana districts stay valid; no re-registration is needed.
  • Since February 2019 new Andhra vehicles get AP 39 by default, and the AP 40 series was added in 2023.
  • Search any AP number free on RTA Citizen, Vahan or mParivahan; public results mask the owner's name.
  • AP 31 is Visakhapatnam, AP 05 East Godavari, AP 16 Krishna (Vijayawada) and AP 26 Nellore.
  • Address changes must be reported within 30 days under section 49 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
  • Bank, RSA and other help-line keywords are answered honestly, with the official place to look up each number.

What does telangana registration mean for old AP numbers?

Telangana registration is the vehicle registration done by the Telangana Transport Department. Until 2 June 2014 Telangana was part of Andhra Pradesh, so every vehicle there carried an AP number. Those plates are still on the road, which is why a search for an AP number often leads to a Telangana vehicle.

Comparison of telangana registration codes and Andhra Pradesh codes after the 2014 state split
One old AP prefix, two states today: read the two digits to tell them apart.

Why the AP prefix still appears in Hyderabad

The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 split the state, but it did not force anyone to change a plate. A car registered at Khairatabad in 2012 still reads AP 09, even though the office now issues TG 09 numbers for new vehicles.

How to tell which state an AP plate belongs to

Look at the two digits after AP. Codes such as AP 09 to AP 13, AP 15, AP 20, AP 22 to AP 25, AP 28, AP 29 and AP 36 belonged to districts now in Telangana. Codes such as AP 02 to AP 07, AP 16, AP 21, AP 26, AP 27, AP 30, AP 31, AP 35, AP 37, AP 39 and AP 40 are Andhra Pradesh.

Where Telangana records are searched

Telangana vehicles, including old AP-coded ones, are searched on Vahan or mParivahan, or through the state transport site. For the state-specific steps, read our guide to TS vehicle owner details.

How is TS registration different from the new TG code?

TS registration was the Telangana code used from 2014. A MoRTH gazette notification made TG the code for new Telangana registrations from 12 March 2024. The change is only for new numbers: TS and older AP plates remain valid, and owners need not apply for anything.

What changes on a TG plate

Only the two letters change. A Hyderabad car registered at Khairatabad now gets TG 09 followed by series letters and a number, in place of TS 09. The office digits stayed the same when the letters changed.

Do TS owners need a new RC?

No. Your registration certificate stays valid with its TS number until the registration itself expires. Renewal, transfer or address change keeps the same mark, because a registration number is attached to the vehicle for life within the state.

TG codes to know around Hyderabad

The Hyderabad offices under the TG series include TG 07 Attapur, TG 08 Medchal, TG 09 Khairatabad, TG 10 Secunderabad, TG 11 Malakpet, TG 12 Kishanbagh and TG 13 Tolichowki. The full Telangana list runs from TG 01 Adilabad to TG 38 Narayanpet.

How does an AP registration search work?

An AP registration search looks up a plate number in the transport database and returns the vehicle’s basic record. Andhra Pradesh offers it on its RTA Citizen portal, and the same record is reachable through national Vahan and mParivahan. The public search is free and needs only the number and a captcha.

What you need before searching

You need the full registration number, for example AP 39 AB 1234, typed without spaces. For owner-only services such as an RC print, you also need the mobile number linked to the RC, because the portal sends an OTP to it.

State portal or national portal?

Both read the same registration record. The state portal is handy for Andhra Pradesh services such as fee payment and application tracking, while Vahan works for every state. Our page on AP registration covers the state’s registration portal itself in more depth.

What is APRTA citizen epragathi?

APRTA citizen epragathi is the citizen portal of the Andhra Pradesh Transport Department, at aprtacitizen.epragathi.org. The “epragathi” part comes from the state’s e-Pragathi e-governance programme. It lists vehicle and licence services, vehicle and licence searches, fee payment and application status.

AP epragathi and AP RTA epragathi: the same site

People search AP epragathi, AP RTA epragathi or simply aprta citizen. All point to the same portal. Bookmark the address you type yourself rather than clicking ads, because look-alike sites copy the name.

AP RTA citizen vehicle details menu

On the portal, the AP RTA citizen vehicle details option sits under the Vehicle/Driving License Details menu. You choose whether to search a vehicle or a licence, then the search type, such as registration number.

AP RTA registration services listed

The APRTA registration services include new registration follow-up, transfer of ownership, change of address, hypothecation entries, duplicate RC and fee payment. Many need an RTO visit or vehicle inspection at the end, so the portal shows when an appointment is required.

How do you use the AP RTA citizen app?

The AP RTA citizen app puts the same services on a phone. Install it only from the official app store page published by the transport department, open the vehicle search, enter the plate number and read the record. The app also shows application status and lets you pay many fees online.

App or browser: which is better?

The browser portal shows more detail on a large screen and is easier for uploads. The app is quicker for a roadside check. Our AP citizen app guide explains the app’s screens and permissions.

Vehicle details by number plate AP, step by step

Finding vehicle details by number plate AP takes under a minute on RTA Citizen. The steps below follow the portal’s own menu labels. They also work as an Andhra Pradesh RTO vehicle search for any plate registered in the state, including older district codes.

Five steps for an AP vehicle number search on the RTA Citizen epragathi portal
The same number also works on national Vahan and in mParivahan.
  1. Open RTA Citizen. Go to aprtacitizen.epragathi.org, the Andhra Pradesh Transport Department citizen portal.
  2. Pick vehicle details. Choose Vehicle/Driving License Details, then Vehicle details as the action.
  3. Search by registration number. Choose Registration number and type the plate without spaces, for example AP39AB1234.
  4. Fill the captcha. Enter the captcha and press Get data.
  5. Check the record. Read the model, registration date, tax, fitness, insurance and status.

AP vehicle number search on Vahan

For an AP vehicle number search on Vahan, open vahan.parivahan.gov.in, choose the vehicle search option, sign in with your mobile and OTP, and enter the number. The result is the national summary of the same record.

What AP vehicle registration details are shown?

AP vehicle registration details in a public search confirm that a vehicle exists and is legal to drive. You see the model, fuel, dates and validity periods, while the owner’s name is masked. The owner, signed in with an OTP, sees the full certificate with address and loan entries.

AP RTA citizen vehicle details for buyers

Before paying for a used vehicle, compare the result with the seller’s RC. The model, colour and chassis number ending must match, the tax and insurance should be valid, and the status should not show blacklisted or a pending case.

How to get AP bike details by number

AP bike details come from the same search as cars, because two-wheelers sit in the same registration database. Type the bike’s full number on RTA Citizen, Vahan or mParivahan and the result shows the model, registration date, insurance and tax validity.

Bike registration details AP owners should check

For your own bike, check that the bike registration details AP records hold match your RC: engine number ending, colour and insurance expiry. A mismatch can cause trouble at a check or during a claim, and the RTO can correct it on request.

AP bike number plate rules

An AP bike number plate follows the same format as a car’s: AP, two digits, series letters and a number. Bikes made from April 2019 come with high security plates fitted by the dealer; older bikes are being fitted in phases.

How do you download RC online AP?

To download RC online AP owners use the national services: the print RC option on Vahan, the virtual RC in mParivahan, or a signed RC in DigiLocker. Each one needs an OTP on the mobile number linked to the registration. A digital RC from DigiLocker or mParivahan is accepted at checks.

RC card download AP from DigiLocker

For an RC card download AP copy, sign in to DigiLocker, search for the transport department’s RC document, enter the registration number and chassis details, and save it. The general steps are in our RC download guide.

RC check AP before printing

Run an RC check AP search first to make sure the record shows your name and the latest address. If not, apply for the correction before you print, or the printed copy will carry the old details.

How do you check AP vahan status?

AP vahan status means the progress of an application, such as a transfer, address change or new registration. Open the application status option on RTA Citizen or Vahan, enter the application number from your receipt, and the portal shows the stage: submitted, fee paid, pending approval or approved.

Andhra Pradesh vehicle registration status for a new vehicle

For a new vehicle, the dealer files the application. Ask the dealer for the application number, then track the Andhra Pradesh vehicle registration status yourself. Once approved, the number is allotted and the RC is printed.

AP vehicle registration status shows pending for long

If the AP vehicle registration status stays pending for weeks, check whether a document was rejected or an inspection is due. The portal message usually says what is missing. If not, contact the RTO that handles your application.

What is the AP number plate format?

The AP number plate has four parts: the state code AP, two digits for the office or series, up to three series letters, and a number from 1 to 9999. On new vehicles the two digits are 39 or 40 statewide, and the letters show the vehicle type.

Andhra Pradesh number plate colours

An Andhra Pradesh number plate uses the national colour scheme: black on white for private vehicles, black on yellow for commercial ones, and white on green for private electric vehicles. Police vehicles use a P series.

Vehicle no format with no spaces

Portals want the vehicle no format without spaces or hyphens: AP39AB1234, not AP-39-AB-1234. Use the digit zero, never the letter O.

What do the parts of an AP vehicle number mean?

An Andhra Pradesh registration number is the unique mark the registering authority gives a vehicle. It identifies the state, the office or series and the individual vehicle, and it links to the full record in the database. In plain terms, the number is the vehicle’s ID for tax, insurance and police records.

Why the number stays with the vehicle

The registration number belongs to the vehicle, not the owner. When the vehicle is sold within Andhra Pradesh, the number stays and only the owner’s name changes in the record.

What is the Andhra Pradesh RTO code list?

The Andhra Pradesh RTO code list has two layers. District codes from AP 02 to AP 37 were issued until 2019 and stay on older vehicles. Since February 2019 new vehicles get the statewide AP 39 series, and AP 40 was added in 2023. The table lists the district codes.

Why the districts changed

Andhra Pradesh reorganised its districts in 2022, creating many new ones such as NTR, Anakapalli and Tirupati. The old codes still refer to the original 13 districts, so an AP 16 car may today belong to an owner in NTR district.

Why do new vehicles get AP 39 or AP 40?

Since February 2019, Andhra Pradesh registers new vehicles under AP 39 by default, whichever district the owner lives in. It was described as the first “one state, one code” policy in India. When the AP 39 series needed more room, the state launched AP 40 in 2023.

AP39 registration which district?

For an AP39 registration, which district is a common question with no single answer. AP 39 is statewide: a car from Srikakulam and one from Chittoor can both carry it. The vehicle record shows the actual registering office.

AP40 which district?

AP40 is also statewide, not a district code. Treat it like AP 39: open the record to see the office that registered the vehicle. Some websites wrongly tie these codes to one town, so trust the record, not the guess.

AP 31 which district?

AP 31 is the code of Visakhapatnam. Codes AP 32, AP 33 and AP 34 were also reserved for Visakhapatnam, though only a few vehicles received them. An AP 31 plate on the road today is most likely a vehicle registered there before 2019.

Visakhapatnam after the 2022 reorganisation

The old Visakhapatnam district was later split, with Anakapalli and Alluri Sitharama Raju districts carved out. Vehicles with AP 31 numbers kept them; new registrations in all three districts get AP 39 or AP 40.

Checking an AP 31 vehicle

Search an AP 31 number exactly as printed. The record still lists the original office, which helps when you need to apply for a transfer or NOC.

AP 05 which district?

AP 05 is East Godavari, with its regional transport office at Kakinada. Older vehicles from Kakinada, Rajahmundry and nearby towns often carry this code. Since 2019, new vehicles from the same area get AP 39 or AP 40 instead.

East Godavari after the split

The 2022 changes created Kakinada, Konaseema and a smaller East Godavari district. An AP 05 plate does not tell you which of these the owner lives in now, only where the vehicle was first registered.

Which districts used AP 02, AP 03 and AP 04?

These three codes belong to the Rayalaseema region. AP 02 is Ananthapuramu (Anantapur), AP 03 is Chittoor and AP 04 is YSR Kadapa. All three appear on vehicles registered before February 2019, and the offices still handle services for those vehicles.

AP 02 which district?

AP 02 is Ananthapuramu. Part of the old district became Sri Sathya Sai district in 2022, but AP 02 plates registered earlier stay unchanged.

AP03 which district?

AP03 is Chittoor. Tirupati, once part of Chittoor district, is now a separate district, so many Tirupati vehicles registered before 2019 carry AP 03.

AP04 which district?

AP04 is YSR Kadapa. Vehicles from Kadapa town, Proddatur and nearby areas registered before 2019 often show this code.

Which districts used AP 07 and AP 16?

Two of the busiest codes in coastal Andhra are AP 07 for Guntur and AP 16 for Krishna district, with its RTO at Vijayawada. Both cover the capital region around Amaravati, so you see them often on older cars and bikes in Vijayawada and Guntur.

AP 07 which district?

AP 07 is Guntur. After 2022, parts of the old district became Palnadu and Bapatla districts, but AP 07 numbers issued earlier are unchanged.

AP 16 which district?

AP 16 is Krishna, with the office at Vijayawada. Vijayawada itself is now in NTR district, so many AP 16 vehicles belong to NTR district residents.

Which districts used AP 21, AP 26 and AP 27?

These codes cover Kurnool and the southern coast. AP 21 is Kurnool, AP 26 is Nellore and AP 27 is Prakasam, with its office at Ongole. Each office still serves the vehicles first registered under its code.

AP21 which district?

AP21 is Kurnool. Nandyal district was carved out of Kurnool in 2022, so an AP 21 vehicle may now be owned in either district.

AP26 which district?

AP26 is Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore. It appears on many older cars, trucks and buses from the Nellore coast.

AP 27 which district?

AP 27 is Prakasam. Vehicles from Ongole, Markapur and Chirala registered before 2019 usually carry it.

Which Hyderabad offices used AP 10, AP 11 and AP 12?

These are Hyderabad codes, now in Telangana. AP 10 was Hyderabad North (Secunderabad), AP 11 Hyderabad East (Malakpet) and AP 12 Hyderabad South (Kishanbagh). AP 09 was Khairatabad and AP 13 Mehdipatnam. Today the same offices issue TG 10, TG 11 and TG 12 numbers.

Former AP registration codes in Telangana such as AP 09 Khairatabad and AP 36 Warangal
Vehicles registered before 2014 keep these AP numbers for life.

AP 10 which district?

AP 10 is Secunderabad, the Hyderabad North office. An AP 10 vehicle is registered in Telangana, not Andhra Pradesh.

AP 11 which district?

AP 11 is Malakpet, the Hyderabad East office.

AP12 which district?

AP12 is Kishanbagh, the Hyderabad South office.

Which Telangana districts used AP 15, AP 20 and AP 22?

Outside Hyderabad, several Telangana districts had AP codes before 2014. AP 15 was Karimnagar, AP 20 was Khammam and AP 22 was Mahabubnagar. These plates are still valid. New vehicles from these districts now get TG codes from the reorganised Telangana list.

AP 15 which district?

AP 15 is Karimnagar. Since Telangana reorganised its districts, the TG 02 office covers Karimnagar.

AP20 which district?

AP20 is Khammam, now served by TG 04 for new numbers.

AP 22 which district?

AP 22 is Mahabubnagar, now TG 06 for new registrations.

Which offices do AP 24, AP 25 and AP 29 belong to?

These three are also Telangana codes from before 2014. AP 24 was Nalgonda, AP 25 was Nizamabad and AP 29 was Rangareddy, at Uppal in Hyderabad. AP 28 was the other Rangareddy office, at Attapur.

AP 24 which district?

AP 24 is Nalgonda, now TG 05 for new numbers.

AP 25 which district?

AP 25 is Nizamabad, now TG 16.

AP 29 which district?

AP 29 is Rangareddy at Uppal, Hyderabad. It sits in Telangana today, and its old numbers remain valid.

AP 36 which district?

AP 36 is Warangal, in Telangana. Warangal’s old district was later split, and the TG list now has TG 03 for Hanamkonda and TG 24 for Warangal. An AP 36 plate shows the vehicle was first registered in the old Warangal district before 2014.

Searching an AP 36 vehicle

Search AP 36 numbers on Vahan or mParivahan as printed. The Andhra Pradesh RTA Citizen portal is not the right place for Telangana vehicles, even though the plate starts with AP.

What does RTO Visakhapatnam handle?

RTO Visakhapatnam is the transport office for the city and its old district code AP 31. It handles licence tests, vehicle inspections, fitness checks for commercial vehicles, transfers, NOCs and corrections for vehicles registered there. Many applications start online on RTA Citizen and end with a visit for inspection.

Finding the office address

We do not list office addresses or phone numbers because they change. Use the office list on aptransport.org or the Parivahan RTO directory to find the current Visakhapatnam office and its timings.

What does RTA Nellore handle?

RTA Nellore is the regional transport office for Nellore, code AP 26. It serves vehicles first registered there, including transfers, hypothecation changes, duplicate RCs and fitness for transport vehicles, and runs licence tests for Nellore residents. As elsewhere in the state, new vehicles get AP 39 or AP 40.

RTA or RTO: is there a difference?

In Andhra Pradesh, both terms are used for the same transport offices. “RTA” stands for Road Transport Authority, the name the department uses on its citizen portal.

How does Vahan Andhra Pradesh fit with the state portal?

Vahan Andhra Pradesh records sit in the national Vahan database run by NIC for MoRTH, while the state offers its own RTA Citizen front end. A search on either shows the same vehicle. The national vehicle information guide explains how Vahan works across every state.

How do Vahan portal Kerala and Haryana pages compare?

People also search vahan portal Kerala and vahan citizen services Haryana. Both states use the national Vahan citizen services with their own state selection, so the steps match. Andhra Pradesh is different only in that it also keeps its own RTA Citizen portal.

How do Vahan service login and online payment work?

The Vahan service login uses your mobile number and an OTP. Once signed in, you can view your vehicles, apply for services and pay. Vahan login online payment works for road tax, transfer fees and other charges, through net banking, cards or UPI, and gives a receipt to download.

What is the Vahan Sarathi app?

The Vahan Sarathi app is not one official app. People use the phrase for mParivahan, which shows Vahan vehicle records and Sarathi licence records together. Install only the NIC-published mParivahan app.

Can you see vehicle owner details by number plate AP?

You can see only a masked name. Public searches for vehicle owner details by number plate AP show partial owner names and no phone or address, to protect privacy. Full details go to the owner, police, courts and insurers through official channels, and no legitimate site sells them.

Andhra Pradesh vehicle registration search for an accident

After an accident, note the number and report it to the police. An Andhra Pradesh vehicle registration search gives you insurance validity, and the police or insurer obtain the owner’s details formally.

How does vehicle ownership transfer online in AP work?

Vehicle ownership transfer online in AP starts on RTA Citizen or Vahan. The seller and buyer fill Form 29 and Form 30, pay the fee online, upload papers and verify the OTP. The RTO then approves and updates the record. Deadlines and fees are in our Form 29 and 30 guide.

What the buyer should check

Before you pay, check the record for loan entries, pending challans and tax validity. If a loan is open, the lender must issue a NOC and Form 35 first.

How to change address in RC book online?

How to change address in RC book online comes down to an online application with Form 33, new address proof and the fee. The Motor Vehicles Act asks owners to report the new address within 30 days. A late report may be compounded for a sum of up to Rs 100, depending on state rules.

Checklist of papers needed to change address or ownership on an AP RC online
Most AP RC changes start online and finish with an RTO approval.

Change vehicle address step by step

To change vehicle address, open the change of address service on RTA Citizen or Vahan, enter the registration number and chassis ending, verify the OTP, fill in the new address, upload proof and pay. Track the application until it is approved.

Moving to a new address in another RTO area

If the new address falls under a different office, the record moves to that office. For a new address in another state, the rules for re-registration apply instead.

Mobile number first

The OTP goes to the mobile on the RC. If that number is old, complete an RC mobile number update before you apply for the address change.

Can we change vehicle registration number?

Can we change vehicle registration number? In general, no. The number is assigned to the vehicle for life within the state. It changes only when the vehicle is re-registered in another state, converted between private and commercial use, or given a special series where the rules allow.

When a new number is allotted

A new mark comes with re-registration in a new state, a change between transport and non-transport use, or a BH series where eligible. A simple sale within the state does not change the number.

Can you get a new number for an AP vehicle without leaving the state?

Usually not. Within Andhra Pradesh a sale, address change or move between districts keeps the same number. The main exception is converting a vehicle from private to commercial use or back, which needs a new series. The full rules for a vehicle ownership transfer within a state are covered separately.

How do you change car registration state?

To change car registration state, get a NOC from the old RTO, pay road tax in the new state, and apply there for a new registration mark using Form 27. Under section 47 this is needed when the vehicle stays in the new state for more than 12 months.

AP to Telangana and back

Moving between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana counts as an interstate move. A car with an AP 39 number used in Hyderabad for more than a year needs a TG number, and the reverse also applies.

What does kindly update details from registration certificate mean?

Kindly update details from registration certificate is a message shown on insurance, FASTag or service forms when the details you typed do not match the RC record. The fix is to enter the registration number, owner name, chassis or engine number exactly as they appear on the RC.

Common AP vahan status and search errors with simple fixes for each problem
Most failed searches come from a typing slip, not a missing record.

Fixing a mismatch

If the RC record itself is wrong, apply for a correction at the RTO. If the form is wrong, edit it and resubmit. Typing spaces in the number is the most common cause of the message.

How do you check vehicle number allotment status?

Vehicle number allotment status shows whether a new vehicle has been given its registration number. Ask the dealer for the application number and track it on RTA Citizen or Vahan. The status changes to approved when the RTO allots the number, which then shows on the record.

What is the vahan temporary registration status?

Vahan temporary registration status is the stage before the permanent number is allotted. A temporary number lets you drive the vehicle home for a short period while the permanent one is processed. Check the status with the application number.

Check VIN number online India: where it works

To check VIN number online India buyers usually use the chassis number shown in the Vahan record, partly masked, and compare it with the vehicle. A VIN has 17 characters under ISO 3779 and never uses I, O or Q. Our guide to the vehicle identification number explains each block.

Chassis number verification before you buy

Chassis number verification means matching the number stamped on the frame with the RC and the Vahan record. If they differ, or the stamping looks altered, do not buy, and ask the police to check the vehicle.

What is Form 25 (renewal form) at the RTO?

The renewal form for a private vehicle’s registration is Form 25, the application to renew a certificate of registration of a non-transport vehicle. Private vehicles need renewal after 15 years. People call it the 25 number form; the full guide is on our 25 number form page.

Form 25 RTO Rajasthan and other states

What is the 60 number form?

The 60 number form is Form 60, the income-tax declaration given by someone who has no PAN, for a transaction that needs PAN, such as buying a motor vehicle other than a two-wheeler. Dealers and RTOs ask for it when the buyer cannot give PAN.

How do you check TN vehicle details and owner records?

TN vehicle details are searched on Vahan or mParivahan, because Tamil Nadu has no separate public search portal of its own. Enter the TN number, complete the captcha or OTP, and the result shows the model, dates and validity, with the owner’s name masked like any other state.

Tamilnadu vehicle owner details

Tamilnadu vehicle owner details follow the same privacy rule: masked in public searches, complete only for the owner and authorities. Searches for tamilnadu vehicle details or TN vehicle registration details reach the same record.

TN registration details for a plate seen in AP

Who can apply

Self-owned auto, taxi and maxi cab drivers can apply, one vehicle per family. Applications go through the Grama or Ward Sachivalayam with Aadhaar, ration card, RC and licence. Confirm current rules at the Sachivalayam.

What is the RSA customer service number for a breakdown?
