Choice mobile number: how to pick, book and use your own digits
A choice mobile number is a SIM number whose digits you pick yourself, usually by typing three or four preferred digits on the operator's own site or app. Jio charges a booking amount, Vi lists free and premium options, Airtel handles it online or in stores, and BSNL auctions VIP numbers. Always finish KYC in your own name, then update Vahan and your licence.
Key takeaways
- A choice mobile number is sold only by the telecom operator; there is no government list of VIP numbers.
- Jio has a Choice Number booking of Rs 499 for postpaid; Vi shows free and premium numbers; BSNL sells VIP numbers by e-auction.
- You can usually choose only 3 to 4 digits; the rest come from the operator's free stock.
- Every genuine number needs KYC in your own name. Paying a stranger for a UPC code is the most common scam.
- One person may hold up to nine connections (six in J&K, Assam and the North-East).
- After a new mobile number, update Vahan, Sarathi, your insurer and FASTag bank so OTPs keep reaching you.

What is a choice mobile number?
A choice mobile number is a SIM number in which you decide some of the digits instead of taking whatever the operator hands out. You usually type three or four digits you like, such as a birth year or a lucky pattern, and the operator shows matching numbers from its stock. You then book one and finish the normal SIM KYC.

Why people want one
A number with your own digits is easier to remember and to share. Shop owners, taxi drivers and small businesses like numbers that customers can recall after one look at a board. Others simply want a date, a vehicle registration digit or a pattern that means something to them.
What a choice number is not
It is not a special type of SIM. Once activated, a choice number works exactly like any other 10-digit Indian mobile number that starts with 6, 7, 8 or 9. It gets the same calls, SMS, data and OTPs. The only difference is how its digits were picked.
Who sells choice and VIP numbers in India?
Only licensed telecom operators issue mobile numbers in India: Jio, Airtel, Vi (Vodafone Idea) and the state-owned BSNL. Each runs its own choice or fancy number scheme with its own price, stock and rules. Shops and websites that “sell” numbers are, at best, resellers who still need the operator to issue the SIM to you.
Operator schemes at a glance
The operator’s website or app is the safest place to start. Jio and Vi let you search digits online, Airtel offers it through its new-connection flow or stores, and BSNL sells its best numbers through circle-wise e-auctions. Stock differs by telecom circle, so the same digits may be free in one state and taken in another.
Why there is no government shop
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) gives blocks of numbers to operators, and the operators decide how to sell them. No ministry, RTO or Parivahan service sells mobile numbers. This site is an independent guide; it is not linked to any operator.
| Operator | Where you search | What it costs | Plan type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jio | jio.com or MyJio app, “Choice Number” | ₹499 booking amount (reported) | Postpaid |
| Vi | Vi website or app, fancy number page | Free numbers plus premium ones | Prepaid or postpaid |
| Airtel | Airtel website, app or store | Not published; ask the operator | Prepaid or postpaid |
| BSNL | Circle e-auction (CYMN portal) | Base price plus your bid | Prepaid or postpaid |
How does a VIP fancy mobile number differ from a free choice number?
A VIP fancy mobile number is a premium number with a rare pattern, such as six repeating digits or a round ending, and it costs extra or goes to auction. A free choice number only contains digits you asked for, mixed with ordinary ones. Operators often show both kinds side by side in the same search.

How operators grade numbers
Operators sort their stock into tiers. Ordinary numbers that happen to contain your digits are usually free. Numbers with strong patterns are marked premium, gold or VIP and carry a price. The very rarest, like a number ending in six zeros, are kept for auctions where buyers bid.
Which one to choose
If you only need your birth year or two lucky digits, a free choice number does the job. Pay for a premium number only if the pattern really matters to you or your business, and only through the operator’s own channel.
How do you book a Jio choice number?
Jio runs a Choice Number service on jio.com and in the MyJio app. You type up to four preferred digits, pick from the matching numbers and pay a booking amount, reported at Rs 499, for a postpaid connection. A booking code then arrives by SMS for the activation step. Check the live amount before paying.
- Open the Choice Number page. Use jio.com or the MyJio app and search for “Choice Number”. Do not follow links from SMS or social media posts.
- Enter preferred digits. Type the three or four digits you want. Jio shows numbers from its stock that contain them.
- Pick and pay. Select a number and pay the booking amount shown on the page.
- Keep the booking code. Save the code sent by SMS. You will need it when the SIM is delivered or activated.
- Finish KYC. Complete the ID check in your own name so Jio can activate the SIM.
Prepaid users and existing customers
Reports differ on whether the paid service covers prepaid connections or only Jio postpaid. If you already use Jio, you cannot simply swap your current number for a new choice number; you take a new connection and then move your contacts over.
When the number goes live
Sources give different timelines for activation, from a day to about two weeks. The page you book on shows the current promise. Until the new SIM works, keep using your old one for OTPs.
How do you choose a fancy number on Vi?
On Vi, open the fancy number page on the Vi website or Vi app, choose prepaid or postpaid, enter your area PIN code and a contact number, then type the digits you want. Vi lists matching free and premium numbers. Pick one, place the order, and Vi says the SIM is delivered to you.
Why the PIN code matters
Vi’s stock is held circle by circle. The PIN code tells the system which telecom circle you are in, so the list shows only numbers that can be issued where you live. A number listed for Mumbai will not appear for a Ludhiana PIN code.
Free versus priced numbers on Vi
Vi marks some results as free and others as premium. Its own blog says many unique numbers cost nothing and several fancy ones sit under modest price points. Prices change, so treat the figure shown at checkout as the only one that counts.
How does Airtel offer a number of your choice?
Airtel lets you look for a number of your choice through its new-connection flow on the Airtel website or Airtel Thanks app, and at Airtel stores. Airtel does not publish a fixed fancy number price list, so the cost depends on the pattern and your circle. Ask the operator before paying anything.
Store route
Many buyers find the store route simpler. Carry your ID and address proof, ask the staff to search for your digits, and complete KYC on the spot. The staff can tell you whether the number is free or premium in your circle.
Online route
If the app shows a number-selection step during a new connection, you can search there. If it does not, the store or Airtel customer care is the reliable way. Do not trust third-party pages that claim to be “Airtel VIP number” portals.
How does the BSNL e-auction for VIP numbers work?
BSNL sells its best numbers through circle-wise e-auctions under its Choose Your Mobile Number (CYMN) service. You register with your mobile number and email, pay a registration fee and bid above the base price. If you win, you pay the balance and get the SIM activated within 7 days.
Prices and refunds
One published BSNL auction table showed base prices from Rs 2,000 to Rs 25,000 depending on the pattern. Final bids can be far higher: one number ending in 7000000 drew Rs 2.4 lakh after bidding opened at Rs 20,000. Losing bidders generally get the registration fee back; a winner who does not pay loses it.
Conditions to read first
Under the auction terms reported by tech press, buyers must be Indian citizens (or Indian-registered firms), give ID and address proof, and may not resell the number. A BSNL auction number also cannot be ported out for 36 months after activation. Check the terms in your own circle before you bid.
Is there an official VIP mobile number list?
There is no official VIP mobile number list from the government, TRAI or the DoT. Each operator keeps its own live stock and shows it only when you search. Websites that publish long “VIP number lists” are resellers or advertisers, and the numbers on them may already be sold or may not exist.
What operator searches show
When you type digits on an operator page, you see a live, short list of numbers available right now in your circle. That is the closest thing to an official list. It changes every few minutes as other people book numbers.
Why printed lists go stale
A list copied onto a blog or a social media post is a snapshot. By the time you read it, the best numbers are usually gone. Trust only what the operator’s own search shows on the day you book.
Which patterns appear on a VIP mobile number list?
Reseller and operator listings group numbers by pattern. Common groups are repeating digits, round endings with several zeros, mirror numbers that read the same both ways, counting runs like 12345, repeated pairs and numbers that hide a date or year. The rarer the pattern, the higher the price.

Patterns linked to faith or luck
Some numbers sell for their meaning. 786 is valued by many Muslim buyers, and certain digits are linked to luck in different communities. Vi’s own blog has posts on lucky numbers and the 786 pattern. These numbers are often marked premium for that reason.
Patterns that match a vehicle
Some owners want a mobile number that matches their vehicle registration digits, for example the same last four digits as their car plate. You can search for those digits like any other choice; there is no link between the two systems.
Is there a VIP mobile number Punjab list?
No authority publishes a VIP mobile number Punjab list. Punjab is a telecom circle, so Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL each hold their own Punjab stock. To see it, search on the operator’s site with a Punjab PIN code, or check the BSNL e-auction for the Punjab circle when one is running.
Punjab searches that mean number plates
Many people searching for “VIP number Punjab” actually want a fancy vehicle number. That is a different system run by the state transport department through e-auctions on Parivahan. Our VIP number plate price guide covers vehicle numbers and their state-wise reserve prices.
Local dealers in Punjab
Local shops in Ludhiana, Amritsar and other cities advertise VIP SIMs. Before paying, ask to see the number issued in your name by the operator. A dealer who asks for the full price before any KYC is a red flag.
What does a VIP mobile number India buyer pay?
A VIP mobile number India buyer can pay nothing, a small booking amount or a large auction bid. Free choice numbers cost only the normal plan. Jio’s choice booking is reported at Rs 499, Vi premium numbers carry listed prices, and BSNL auction numbers start at a base price and go to the highest bidder.

Costs beyond the number
The number price is only part of the bill. You still pay for the plan, and premium numbers are often tied to postpaid plans with a minimum monthly rental. BSNL notes that tariff charges apply on top of the winning bid.
Prices on reseller sites
Reseller sites quote their own prices, sometimes many times the operator rate. These are not official fees. If the same digits are free or cheaper on the operator’s page, buy there.
How do you pick digits that are easy to remember?
Choose digits that mean something to you and that others can say aloud in one breath. Short repeats, a year, or the last digits of your shop’s landline work well. Search with three or four digits rather than six; shorter searches return far more free matches in your circle.
Test before you book
Say the number aloud and write it down once. If you stumble, customers will too. Avoid numbers that look like a helpline, such as ones ending in 1930 or 100, because they can confuse callers.
Keep it simple for business cards
A business number should be easy to type into a phone. Grouping like 98XXX-12345 helps people remember it. You can print it in that style on boards and cards.
Prepaid or postpaid: which plan suits a fancy number?
A postpaid plan suits most premium choice numbers, because Jio’s paid choice service is tied to postpaid and many premium numbers expect a monthly rental. Prepaid works for free choice numbers on most operators. Pick the plan type first, since some numbers only show up for one of them.
Risks of letting prepaid lapse
If a prepaid number goes without recharge for too long, the operator can disconnect and later reissue it to someone else. With a valuable number, set a recharge reminder or move it to postpaid.
Switching later
You can usually convert between prepaid and postpaid with the same operator and keep the number. Check whether your premium number’s terms allow it before you switch.
Which documents do you need for a new mobile number?
For any new mobile number, choice or not, you need proof of identity and address, usually your Aadhaar for e-KYC at the store or at the delivery visit. Other accepted IDs include a passport, voter ID or driving licence. Businesses buying VIP numbers in the company name need incorporation papers.
Individual buyers
The operator checks your face against your ID and records your consent. The SIM is issued only in the name of the person who completes KYC. Never let someone else complete KYC “for you”.
Company buyers
For BSNL auctions, companies are reported to need the certificate of incorporation, memorandum and articles of association, and a recent income tax return. Other operators have their own business-connection forms.
How many SIM cards can one person hold?
One person can hold up to nine mobile connections across all operators combined. The limit is six in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and the North-Eastern states. In August 2026 the DoT told operators to refuse a new SIM to anyone already at the limit, so check your count before buying a choice number.
If you are near the limit
Drop a connection you no longer use before you book. Otherwise the operator may refuse the new SIM at the KYC step, even after you have paid a booking amount.
Can you port a choice number to another operator?
Yes, in most cases. Mobile number portability lets you move your choice number to another operator and keep every digit. You request a Unique Porting Code (UPC) from your current operator and give it to the new one. A BSNL auction number is the main exception: it cannot be ported for 36 months.
Lock-in on premium numbers
Some premium numbers come with a minimum stay or plan commitment. Read the terms before you buy, because leaving early may mean paying a charge or losing an offer.
UPC codes and fraud
A UPC is only for porting your own number. Anyone who sells you a number by sending a UPC from a SIM in their name is transferring a number you do not legally hold until KYC is done in your name.
Can you buy a VIP number from a reseller?
Resellers advertise VIP numbers online and in markets, but the operator must still issue the SIM to you after KYC in your name. A reseller cannot give you legal ownership of a number held in someone else’s name. If you use a reseller, pay only after the number appears on a connection in your name.
Safer ways to use a reseller
Ask which operator holds the number, insist on doing KYC yourself, and keep payment records. Avoid paying full price in advance through UPI to an individual.
How do fake VIP number sellers cheat buyers?
Fake sellers advertise rare numbers at attractive prices, take an advance and then demand processing, porting or GST fees again and again. Police in Panchkula, Gurugram and Ahmedabad have registered such cases; one Ahmedabad victim reportedly lost Rs 1.43 crore to repeated “processing charges” for a VIP number.

Warning signs
- The seller asks for money before showing a KYC step in your name.
- Each payment leads to a new fee.
- You only get a UPC code or a SIM already registered to someone else.
- The website copies an operator’s logo but has a different domain.
Where to report
Call the national cybercrime helpline 1930 quickly, as early reports give a better chance of freezing the money, and file a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in.
Common problems when booking a choice number
Most failed bookings come from three things: the digits are already taken, the number is not available in your circle, or KYC fails. Shorten your search to three digits, try a different order, and make sure the name on your ID matches the booking. Payment issues are handled by the operator’s own support.
“No numbers found”
Try fewer digits, or put them at the end of the number instead of the start. Operators often have more stock for ending patterns.
Payment taken but no booking
Wait for the confirmation SMS, then contact the operator with the transaction ID. Do not pay a second time on another site.
Lucky numbers and numerology claims
Many buyers pick digits by numerology, adding the digits to reach a “lucky” total. Operators and resellers market these numbers, but no evidence shows that a number’s digits change your fortune. Choose a lucky number if it makes you happy, just do not overpay because of a promise of luck.
Keep it practical
A lucky number still has to be easy to remember and registered in your name. Those two points matter more than the digit total.
What should you update after getting a new mobile number?
After a new mobile number, update every record that sends you OTPs: your vehicle record on Vahan, your driving licence on Sarathi, your insurer, FASTag bank, bank and UPI apps, Aadhaar and DigiLocker. Keep the old SIM active until each one sends OTPs to the new number.

| Record | What it sends you | Where to update |
|---|---|---|
| Vahan (RC) | RC, tax and challan OTPs | Vahan mobile update service or RTO |
| Sarathi (DL) | Licence service OTPs | Sarathi portal or RTO |
| Vehicle insurer | Policy and claim messages | Insurer’s app or branch |
| FASTag bank | Toll debits and recharge alerts | Issuing bank or wallet app |
| Bank and UPI apps | Banking OTPs | Your bank branch or app |
| Aadhaar | e-KYC OTPs | Aadhaar enrolment or update centre |
Order to follow
Update Aadhaar and your bank first, because other services often check them. Then move to transport records, insurance and FASTag.
Where does a new number go in your vehicle record?
Your vehicle record on Vahan holds one contact number, and every RC, tax and challan OTP goes to it. Use the Vahan “Update Mobile Number” service with your registration number, the last five digits of the chassis number and an OTP on the new phone. Our RC mobile number update guide has the full steps.
If the online update fails
If the chassis digits or name do not match, visit your RTO with the RC and ID proof. For what the number in your record does, see our guide to the mobile number in Vahan.
Does your DL record need the new number too?
Yes. The driving licence record on Sarathi keeps its own copy of your number, separate from Vahan. Changing one does not change the other. Update the licence number through the Sarathi portal or at the RTO so licence renewals and duplicate DL requests reach your new phone.
One update per vehicle
Each vehicle record is separate too. If you own a car and a bike, update both registrations.
How do you check which connections are in your name?
Use the Know your mobile connections service on the Sanchar Saathi portal. Log in with your number and an OTP to see every connection issued against your ID. If a fake seller used your documents, or you find a SIM you never took, report it there. Our Hindi guide on mobile number kiske naam se hai online explains the check in detail.
Why this matters after a VIP purchase
Run the check after buying a premium number. It confirms the number is in your name and that no extra SIM was opened with your documents.
Is a choice mobile number the same as a choice vehicle number?
No. A choice mobile number is a SIM number from a telecom operator. A choice or fancy vehicle number is a registration number for your car or bike, booked through the state transport department or the Parivahan fancy number e-auction. The two systems, prices and rules are completely separate.
Where to read about vehicle numbers
Fancy vehicle numbers have state-wise reserve prices and auctions. See the VIP number plate price guide for those, and our Vahan services hub for other registration tasks.

What is a choice mobile number?
It is a mobile number where you choose some of the digits, for example your birth year or a repeating pattern. Operators let you search their free stock by typing three or four preferred digits.
Is a choice number free?
Often yes. Vi and other operators show many free numbers that match your digits. Rare patterns such as repeating digits are premium and carry a price or go to auction.
How much does a Jio choice number cost?
Tech press reports a booking amount of Rs 499 for Jio Choice Number with a postpaid connection. Check the current amount on jio.com or the MyJio app before you pay.
How do I get a BSNL VIP number?
BSNL sells VIP numbers through circle-wise e-auctions. You register, pay a registration fee, bid above the base price and, if you win, pay the balance and activate the SIM within seven days.
Is there a VIP mobile number list for Punjab?
No government body publishes one. Operators show the numbers available in the Punjab circle when you search with a Punjab PIN code, and BSNL lists Punjab numbers in its circle auction.
Can I buy a VIP number from a website that is not the operator?
Resellers exist, but the number must still be issued to you with KYC in your own name. Do not pay for a number you cannot see transferred to your name by the operator.
Can I keep my choice number if I change operator?
Usually yes, through mobile number portability. A BSNL auction number, though, cannot be ported out for 36 months after activation under its auction terms.
Do I need to update Vahan after a new mobile number?
Yes. Vahan sends RC, tax and challan OTPs to the number in your vehicle record, so update it through the Vahan mobile update service or at the RTO.
Is a choice mobile number the same as a choice vehicle number?
No. A choice vehicle number is a registration plate number booked through the RTO or Vahan fancy number service. A choice mobile number is a SIM number from a telecom operator.
Parivahan Sewa (parivahansewa-in.com) is an independent information website and is not affiliated with MoRTH, Parivahan or any state transport department. Confirm fees and rules on the official portal before you pay or apply.
