Delhi vehicle registration: number plates, DL codes and RC guide

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 24 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

Delhi vehicle registration is the process by which the Delhi Transport Department enters a vehicle on the national Vahan register and allots it a number such as DL 9C AB 1234. The dealer usually files the application, you pay road tax and fees, and the zone for your address issues the number, plates and RC. Delhi uses codes DL 1 to DL 13.

Key takeaways

  • Delhi vehicle registration runs on Vahan; the dealer usually files it, and the zone that serves your address issues the number.
  • Delhi plates drop the leading zero: DL 4, not DL 04, which matters when you type a number into a search.
  • The letter after the zone number shows the class: C for cars, S for two-wheelers, R for autos and T or RT for taxis.
  • Najafgarh vehicles carry DL 9 (Dwarka) and Janakpuri vehicles carry DL 4; neither area has a separate code.
  • A public Vahan search shows model, fuel and validity with a masked owner name; full owner data is not public.
  • A private RC is valid for 15 years, but Delhi's own age limits for older cars can bite first.

What is Delhi vehicle registration?

Delhi vehicle registration is the legal entry of a vehicle in the records of the Transport Department of the Government of NCT of Delhi. It gives the vehicle a unique number beginning with DL, a registration certificate and the right to run on public roads. The record sits on the national Vahan database.

Five stages of Delhi vehicle registration from purchase to number allotment and RC issue
The zone that issues your number follows the address on your papers.

Why registration is compulsory

The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 does not allow anyone to drive a vehicle in a public place unless it is registered. In Delhi that rule is enforced at checkpoints, by traffic cameras and at fuel stations that now read plates, so an unregistered vehicle is noticed quickly.

What the registration gives you

You get three things: a registration number painted on high security plates, a registration certificate (RC) in smart card and digital form, and a Vahan record that insurers, buyers and traffic police can read against that number.

Who can apply for Delhi vehicle registration?

Anyone who owns a vehicle and lives in Delhi can apply for Delhi vehicle registration, whether an individual, a company, a trust or a government body. What decides the zone is the address on your papers, not where you bought the vehicle. Dealers in Delhi file most new applications for buyers.

Residents and companies

An individual needs Delhi address proof. A company or firm registers at the address of its office in Delhi, and the RC is issued in the company’s name with an authorised signatory.

Buyers from outside Delhi

If you live in Noida, Ghaziabad or Gurugram, a Delhi dealer can still sell you a vehicle, but the registration goes to your home state. A Delhi number is tied to a Delhi address.

Which office handles a Delhi vehicle registration?

The Delhi Transport Department runs 13 zonal registering authorities, each with its own DL number. Your vehicle is registered with the zone that covers your address, and its number decides the code on your plate. Commercial vehicles also go through the inspection and testing units, such as Burari.

Zonal offices and districts

Each office is named after a district, such as South Delhi or West Delhi I. Office addresses, timings and the testing sites are covered in our guide to the Burari RTO office and Delhi’s zonal offices.

District changes in 2026

Delhi was reorganised into 13 revenue districts in December 2025, and the department ordered transport offices to align with them from April 2026. Existing DL numbers do not change; only the office that serves new work may.

How does a new vehicle get registered in Delhi?

A new vehicle in Delhi is registered through the dealer. You pay for the vehicle and insurance, the dealer enters the application on Vahan with your documents, you pay the road tax and registration fees, the zone allots the next number, and high security plates are fitted before delivery.

  1. Buy and insure. Buy the vehicle from a dealer and take insurance before it leaves the showroom.
  2. File the application. The dealer enters the registration application on Vahan for the Delhi zone that serves your address.
  3. Pay tax and fees. Pay road tax and the registration heads shown on the Vahan fee screen and keep the receipt.
  4. Get the number. The zone allots the next number in its running series, or a choice number you have booked.
  5. Fit plates and collect the RC. The dealer fits the high security plates and the RC is issued as a smart card and on Vahan.

Why the dealer does the paperwork

The dealer holds the sale and roadworthiness certificates and has a Vahan login. That is why most buyers in Delhi never visit a transport office for a new private car or two-wheeler.

When you must go yourself

Commercial vehicles need an inspection and a permit, and some cases, such as imported vehicles or vehicles from another state, need papers checked in person. The department’s notice board tells you which zone to visit.

Which documents does Delhi vehicle registration need?

The core set is the application for registration, the dealer’s sale certificate, the manufacturer’s roadworthiness certificate, valid insurance, Delhi address proof, PAN or Form 60, and identity proof. A financed vehicle also needs the hypothecation details so the lender’s name appears on the RC.

Checklist of documents needed to register a new vehicle in Delhi with the transport department
The dealer usually collects these and uploads them for you.

Forms in the file

Under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules the application is made in Form 20, with Form 21 (sale certificate) and Form 22 (roadworthiness). The dealer fills these on Vahan, so you mainly sign and check spellings.

Address proof that works

Use a document that shows your current Delhi address, such as Aadhaar, a passport, a rent agreement or a utility bill accepted by the zone. The address decides your zone and is printed on the RC.

What fees are charged when you register a vehicle in Delhi?

Registration in Delhi carries a central registration fee, a smart card charge, postal charges and, for cars, a separate MCD parking charge, on top of road tax. Exact amounts appear on the Vahan fee screen for your vehicle; the figures below are those reported by secondary sources for private cars.

Fee head (private car)Amount reported
Registration fee₹600
Temporary registration, if taken₹150 to ₹200
Smart card RC₹200
Postal charge₹30
MCD parking charge (example of a ₹10 lakh car)₹4,000
Source: Motomotar car registration costs guide, Motomotar Delhi RC fee breakdown. Checked October 2026.

The Vahan screen is final

These are reported amounts, not an official schedule. The Vahan fee screen lists every head that applies to your vehicle class and is the figure you actually pay. Ask the dealer to share it before you sign.

Fixed fees for loan buyers

A financed car adds a hypothecation entry. Reported fixed RTO fees on a new car are about ₹1,700 to ₹2,000 for a cash buyer and about ₹3,200 to ₹3,500 with a loan, before road tax.

How much tax is collected at registration in Delhi?

Road tax is collected once, at registration, for private vehicles in Delhi and is the biggest part of the bill. For an individual’s car it is a percentage of the price that rises with the price band, and diesel pays more than petrol. Full rates are in our Delhi road tax guide.

How the car slabs work

Reported slabs run from 4% for petrol cars up to ₹6 lakh to 12.5% for diesel cars above ₹10 lakh. A petrol car at ₹8,00,000 falls in the 7% band, which gives ₹56,000 in road tax.

Electric vehicles

Delhi’s EV policy has given tax and fee relief to electric vehicles. Because the terms change with each policy notification, check the current position with the dealer and on the department’s site.

What happens after the dealer files the application?

After filing, Vahan generates an application number. Once tax and fees are paid the zone approves the record and the number is allotted, either the next in its series or a booked choice number. Plates are fitted, and the smart card RC follows by post or from the office.

Track it with the application number

Ask the dealer for the application number on the receipt. You can follow its progress on Vahan, which is also explained in our RC status Delhi guide.

Late filing

A secondary source reports a ₹500 monthly penalty in Delhi if the application is not filed within 14 days of purchase. We could not confirm this on an official page, so do not leave filing to the last moment.

What is a Delhi vehicle registration number?

A Delhi vehicle registration number is the unique mark the transport department gives each vehicle, such as DL 4C AB 1234. It stays with the vehicle for life, even when the owner changes, unless the vehicle is moved to another state and registered there.

It identifies the vehicle, not the person

The number links to the vehicle’s chassis and engine numbers. The owner can change many times; the number, plate and Vahan record stay the same.

Where you will see it

It is on the plates, the RC, the insurance policy, the PUC certificate, FASTag records and every challan. Every one of these must show it in exactly the same form.

How is a Delhi registration number built?

A Delhi registration number has four parts: DL for Delhi, a zone number from 1 to 13, one to three series letters that show the vehicle class and running series, and a number from 1 to 9999. Delhi writes the zone number without a leading zero.

A worked example

In DL 9S AQ 4521, DL is Delhi, 9 is the Dwarka zone, S shows a two-wheeler, Q is the running series inside the S group and 4521 is the vehicle’s own number.

Why there is no zero

Most states write two-digit office numbers, such as MH 02. Delhi writes DL 1, DL 2 and so on. When you type a number into a portal, leave the zero out.

What is the DL code?

DL is the two-letter code that identifies Delhi on every Indian number plate. The DL code is followed by a zone number, so the full prefix of a Delhi plate reads from DL 1 to DL 13. DL is also the short form of driving licence, which is a different thing altogether.

DL on plates and on licences

On a plate, DL means the vehicle is registered in Delhi. On a card it can mean driving licence. A Delhi licence number also starts with DL, followed by the issuing office.

Where DL sits among state codes

Every state and union territory has its own two-letter mark, from AN for Andaman and Nicobar to WB for West Bengal. DL has been Delhi’s code throughout and was never split or renamed.

Delhi number plate list: DL 1 to DL 13

The Delhi number plate list has 13 codes, one for each zonal registering authority. Each code belongs to a district zone, and the table shows two sample localities for each. The full office directory with addresses is on our Burari RTO page.

Older numbers keep their codes

A car registered at one zone keeps its code even if the owner moves to another part of Delhi. Some older series, such as certain DL 7 records, are now held by the newer DL 13 office.

Which DL RTO code covers your area?

The DL RTO code for your vehicle is the code of the zone that serves your registered address. Find your locality in the zone lists, or ask the dealer which authority the application went to. When in doubt, the Vahan record of a similar vehicle from your street will show the same office.

DL 13, East Delhi II at Surajmal Vihar, completes the set.

Border localities

Some areas sit close to two zones. Sarai Kale Khan, for example, appears in the South Delhi list even though the Central Delhi office is located at ISBT Sarai Kale Khan.

Codes after the 2026 alignment

If the department moves your locality to a different office under the new district map, older vehicles keep the code already on their RC. Only new registrations take the new office’s code.

What is the Najafgarh RTO code?

The Najafgarh RTO code is DL 9. Najafgarh has no separate registering authority; it falls under the South West Delhi I zone at Sector 10, Dwarka, which also covers Palam, Matiala, Bijwasan, Chhawla, Kapashera and Jafarpur Kalan. A Najafgarh car therefore reads DL 9C followed by its series.

Two-wheelers from Najafgarh

A scooter or motorcycle from Najafgarh carries DL 9S and its series letters. The same office handles it.

Getting there

Owners from Najafgarh and nearby villages deal with the Dwarka office for work that needs a visit, such as some transfer and address cases.

What is the Janakpuri RTO code?

The Janakpuri RTO code is DL 4, the West Delhi I zone. Besides Janakpuri it covers Vikaspuri, Keshopur, Tilak Nagar, Uttam Nagar, Mohan Garden, Paschim Vihar, Meera Bagh, Nangloi, Mundka, Hari Nagar and Subhash Nagar, so a large share of west Delhi’s cars carry DL 4C.

Janakpuri versus Raja Garden

Rajouri Garden, Punjabi Bagh and Moti Nagar are not DL 4. They belong to DL 10, West Delhi II at Raja Garden. Neighbours a few kilometres apart can therefore have different codes.

DL 4 two-wheelers

West Delhi I two-wheelers read DL 4S, followed by the running letters, such as DL 4SC or DL 4SDA.

What is a DL8S RTO number?

A DL8S RTO number is a two-wheeler registered at DL 8, the North West Delhi I zone at Wazirpur. The S marks a scooter or motorcycle. The zone covers Model Town, Jahangirpuri, Adarsh Nagar, Keshav Puram, Ashok Vihar, Shalimar Bagh, Pitampura, Mukherjee Nagar and Azadpur.

How the S series runs

Numbers go from DL 8S 0001 to 9999, then DL 8SA, DL 8SB and onward. A longer letter group, such as DL 8SBX, simply means the bike was registered later.

DL 8C for cars

Cars from the same zone carry DL 8C. The difference between DL 8C and DL 8S is only the vehicle class.

What is a DL9S RTO number?

A DL9S RTO number belongs to a scooter or motorcycle registered at DL 9, the Dwarka office for South West Delhi I. It is common across Dwarka, Najafgarh, Palam, Dabri, Sagarpur, Mahavir Enclave and Inderpuri, and on bikes bought by students and office workers in the Dwarka sub-city.

Electric scooters

Electric two-wheelers sit in the same S series, so an e-scooter from Dwarka also reads DL 9S. Its plate colour, not the letter, shows that it is electric.

Checking a DL9S number

Type it without spaces, for example DL9SAQ4521, in the Vahan search or mParivahan.

What do the letters after the Delhi number plate code mean?

The letters after the Delhi number plate code show the vehicle class first and then the running series. C is a private car, S a two-wheeler, R an auto rickshaw, T a taxi, RT an app taxi and ER an e-rickshaw. Goods vehicles use G, M or L by size.

Vanity and old sub-office letters

F has been used for VIP vanity numbers on passenger vehicles. Series such as CNA and SNA came from sub-offices whose records have moved to newer zones.

Table of Delhi number plate code letters such as C for cars and S for two-wheelers
The letter after the zone number tells you the vehicle class.

What DL 1 issues

The North zone at Mall Road issues only certain letters, mostly commercial and public service series. Most public service vehicles in Delhi, except e-rickshaws, are registered under DL 1.

What does a Delhi car number plate look like?

A private Delhi car number plate is a white high security plate with black embossed letters, reading for example DL 3C BX 7821. It carries the IND mark, a chromium hologram and a laser-etched serial. A colour sticker on the windscreen shows the fuel type.

Plate size

Car plates are 50 cm by 12 cm under the national HSRP rules. Fonts, spacing and characters are fixed; names, logos or stylised digits are not allowed.

Front and rear

Both plates must be identical and fitted with non-reusable snap locks, so a plate cannot be swapped without breaking the lock.

How do you read a Delhi car number?

Read a Delhi car number from left to right: DL for Delhi, the zone number, C for car, the series letters and the four-digit number. DL 10CK 0456 is a car from West Delhi II at Raja Garden, in the K series, numbered 456.

Older cars

Before the CA to CZ series started, Delhi car numbers read simply DL 3C 1234. These older cars are now near or past Delhi’s age limits.

Delhi car no in the DL 10 to DL 13 zones

Because the format has a fixed 10-character limit, the Delhi car no at DL 10 to DL 13 cannot move to three-letter CAA series. These offices sometimes issue private cars with letters such as A, P or D once the C series runs out, so a private car may not show C at all.

What is a Delhi auto number?

A Delhi auto number is the registration of an auto rickshaw, marked with the letter R, such as DL 1R AB 1234. Autos are commercial vehicles, so they carry yellow plates and need a permit and fitness certificate. CNG autos have the colour sticker for their fuel type.

Delhi e-rickshaws

Battery rickshaws use the separate ER series, such as DL 6ER 1234. They are registered vehicles too and must carry plates.

What does a Delhi taxi number plate look like?

A Delhi taxi number plate has black letters on a yellow background and a commercial series letter: T for taxis, RT for radio and app taxis, and Y or Z for commercial private taxis. Electric taxis carry a green plate with yellow letters instead.

Self-drive rentals

Self-drive rental cars carry yellow letters on a black plate and use the N series in Delhi. They are commercial vehicles even though a customer drives them.

Rural share taxis

Q (phatphat seva) and W series cover rural share taxis, such as DL 1W and DL 2W numbers.

Which plate colours do Delhi vehicles carry?

Delhi uses the national colour scheme. Private vehicles have black on white, commercial vehicles black on yellow, private electric vehicles white on green, commercial electric vehicles yellow on green and self-drive rentals yellow on black. Temporary plates use red on yellow.

Delhi car number for electric vehicles

A Delhi car number on an electric car still uses the C series, for example DL 12C AZ 3001, but the plate is green with white letters. The colour, not the letter, tells police it is electric.

Diplomatic plates

Delhi hosts most of India’s embassies, so diplomatic plates are common here. They use CD, CC or UN letters and follow a separate numbering system.

Do Delhi vehicles need HSRP and a colour-coded sticker?

Yes. Every vehicle in Delhi must carry high security registration plates and the third registration mark, a colour sticker on the windscreen. Vehicles made from 1 April 2019 come with them fitted by the dealer; older ones had to be fitted later.

Sticker colours

The sticker is light blue for petrol and CNG vehicles and orange for diesel. It is issued with the plates and must stay on the inside of the windscreen.

Penalties

Driving without HSRP or the sticker can lead to a challan. Reports from Delhi drives cite amounts between ₹5,000 and ₹10,000, and the amounts are covered in our Delhi traffic challan guide.

What is a Delhi passing number?

A Delhi passing number is everyday language for the registration number a vehicle receives in Delhi. “Delhi passing” means the vehicle was registered, or “passed”, by a Delhi transport office, so its plate starts with DL. Used-car listings use the phrase to show a vehicle’s home state.

Do's and don'ts for a Delhi passing number on private cars and two-wheelers
The passing code shows where the vehicle was registered, nothing more.

Why buyers ask for Delhi passing

Some buyers prefer a Delhi passing car because its paperwork is local. But Delhi’s age rules for older diesel and petrol cars also apply, so check the year before paying a premium.

Passing does not show the owner’s area

A DL 9 car can be owned by someone in East Delhi who bought it second-hand. The code shows where the vehicle was first registered, not where the present owner lives.

How do you run a Delhi RTO number check?

To run a Delhi RTO number check, open Vahan’s Know Your Vehicle Details service, sign in with your own mobile number and OTP, and enter the full DL number without spaces. The result shows the registering office, model, fuel, registration date and validity dates, with a masked owner name.

  1. Open the Vahan search. Go to vahan.parivahan.gov.in and choose Know Your Vehicle Details under informational services.
  2. Sign in with OTP. Use your own mobile number; the check itself is free.
  3. Type the number. Enter it as DL9SAQ4521, with no spaces and no zero before the zone number.
  4. Read the result. Check the office, model, fuel, registration date and insurance and fitness dates.

SMS and app options

You can also search in mParivahan or send VAHAN followed by the number to 7738299899 for basic details. Operator SMS charges may apply.

If the search fails

“Record not found” usually means a typing slip, a leading zero or an old record not yet digitised. Try again, then ask the zone that issued the number.

The owner name is partly hidden in every public search.

Vehicle details by number plate Delhi: what a public search returns

A search for vehicle details by number plate Delhi returns what the Vahan register makes public: the model, maker, fuel, vehicle class, registration date, office, and validity of registration, insurance and PUC. The owner name is partly masked, and the address and phone number are never shown.

Why the owner is hidden

Owner data is personal. Police, courts and authorised bodies can see it. Our guide on vehicle owner details by number plate explains the legal routes.

Using it before a purchase

Before you buy a used Delhi car, match the model, colour and registration date in the search with the RC the seller shows you. Any mismatch is a reason to stop.

What does DL RTO vehicle information show?

DL RTO vehicle information is the Vahan record for a Delhi-registered vehicle. It covers the registering office, vehicle class, maker and model, fuel, emission norm, registration date, RC validity, insurance validity, PUC validity and, for commercial vehicles, fitness and permit dates. Financed vehicles may show the hypothecation.

Dates to check first

For a private car in Delhi, the registration date and fuel matter most, because they decide when Delhi’s age limits apply. For a commercial vehicle, check fitness and permit expiry.

Wrong details on the record

If the record shows the wrong model, colour or fuel, the owner must apply to the issuing zone for a correction. The public search cannot be edited by anyone else.

How does a Delhi transport vehicle search work?

A Delhi transport vehicle search is a lookup of a commercial vehicle, such as a taxi, auto, bus or truck, using its DL number. Vahan shows its class, permit and fitness validity. Passengers use it to confirm that a taxi or school van is properly registered before travelling.

Check school vans and cabs

School vans in Delhi use the K series and taxis T or RT. If a vehicle carrying passengers shows a white private plate, it is not registered as a commercial vehicle.

What is the Delhi vehicle registration certificate?

The Delhi vehicle registration certificate is the RC issued by your Delhi zone. It proves the vehicle is registered and shows the owner, address, chassis and engine numbers, vehicle class, fuel, seating, registration date and validity. Delhi issues it as a smart card and as a digital record on Vahan.

Timeline of a Delhi vehicle registration certificate from issue to the fifteen year validity limit
Delhi's age limits for older cars apply on top of the RC validity.

Smart card and digital RC

The smart card is posted or collected from the office. The digital RC in DigiLocker or mParivahan is accepted at par with the original, which helps if the card has not arrived yet.

Keep the record current

A change of address within Delhi, a loan closure or a change of colour must be reported, so the RC matches the vehicle.

How do you get a copy of your Delhi RC?

You can get a copy of a Delhi RC online in minutes. Open Vahan or DigiLocker, enter the DL number and chassis digits, and verify the OTP sent to the registered mobile. The steps are the same as in our guide to vehicle registration certificate download.

OTP not arriving?

The OTP goes to the number in the vehicle record. If it is old, update the mobile number in vehicle registration first, then download.

A lost card

A downloaded copy does not replace a lost original for a sale. For that, apply for a duplicate RC to your Delhi zone with a police report.

How long is a Delhi RC valid?

A private vehicle’s RC is valid for 15 years from registration under Section 41(7) of the Motor Vehicles Act and can be renewed. In Delhi, however, diesel cars over 10 years and petrol cars over 15 years face restrictions, so renewal in practice works very differently here.

Delhi’s age limits

The age limits come from court and tribunal orders on air pollution, not from the RC itself. What they mean for your car, including NOCs to move it out, is explained in our Delhi vehicle ban guide.

Commercial vehicles

Transport vehicles depend on fitness certificates and permits rather than a 15-year RC. Their fitness is renewed at the testing stations at Burari and elsewhere.

What does RC license mean?

RC license is a common search phrase that mixes two different documents. The RC is the vehicle’s registration certificate. The licence is the driver’s driving licence. In Delhi, both start with DL, which adds to the confusion, but they come from different systems.

Vahan versus Sarathi

The RC lives on Vahan; the driving licence lives on Sarathi. Delhi licence fees and services are in our guide to driving licence fees in Delhi.

What police ask for

At a check you may be asked for both. Keeping them in DigiLocker or mParivahan covers both documents on one phone.

How do you book a choice Delhi vehicle no?

You can book a choice Delhi vehicle no for a non-transport four-wheeler through Delhi’s auction. Numbers are grouped into five categories with a minimum reserve price, auctioned online fortnightly, and the allotment is valid for 90 days. Broader prices are in our VIP number plate price guide.

CategoryExample numbersMinimum reserve price
Category 10001₹5,00,000
Category 20002 to 0009₹3,00,000
Category 30010 to 0099, 0786, 1111, 9999₹2,00,000
Category 40100, 2222, 4444, 5555 and similar₹1,00,000
Category 5Any other number out of order₹20,000

Bids in the auction can go well above these floor prices.

Register within the deadline

If the vehicle is not registered within the 90-day allotment, the fee is forfeited and the number goes back to the pool.

Two-wheelers

The auction rule covers four-wheelers. Two-wheeler buyers normally get the next number in the S series.

What changes when a Delhi vehicle is sold?

When a Delhi vehicle is sold, the registration number stays but the RC moves to the buyer through an ownership transfer. Reported government fees are modest, but the transfer must be reported on time. The full online method is in our vehicle ownership transfer online guide.

Transfer fee headAmount reported
Transfer fee₹300
Smart card RC₹200
Total, cash car₹500
Hypothecation endorsement, if financed₹1,500
Total, financed car₹2,000

Late reporting

Delhi’s rules reportedly charge ₹50 for the first 30 days of delay and ₹100 per month after that. Report the sale promptly so later challans do not reach the seller.

Buyer in another zone

The number does not change when a buyer in another Delhi zone takes over. A DL 4 car stays DL 4.

How do you bring an outside-state vehicle into the Delhi register?

A vehicle from another state that stays in Delhi for more than 12 months must get a Delhi registration mark under Section 47. Get an NOC from the original state, pay Delhi road tax as applicable, and apply to your Delhi zone with the old RC, NOC, insurance, PUC and Delhi address proof.

The NOC comes first

The old state’s office must release the vehicle. Without the no objection certificate, Delhi cannot assign a new number.

Tax already paid

Refunds of the old state’s tax and the amount due in Delhi depend on both states’ rules. Ask both offices before you start.

What is a UP transport vehicle number?

A UP transport vehicle number is the registration of a commercial vehicle in Uttar Pradesh. It starts with UP and a district number, such as UP 14 for Ghaziabad or UP 16 for Noida, and carries a yellow plate. It is not a Delhi number, but these vehicles are a common sight on Delhi roads.

Commercial letters in UP

Some UP offices use letters to mark commercial vehicles, for example 21N at Moradabad and 22T at Rampur. The plate colour still decides whether it is commercial.

Delhi codes and NCR codes

Delhi’s neighbours issue their own codes: UP 14 and UP 16 on the east, HR 26 and nearby HR codes in Gurugram. A vehicle registered there stays on that state’s register even if it is used in Delhi every day.

Which Delhi registration mistakes cause delays?

Most delays in Delhi come from a few avoidable slips: an address outside the zone, a name spelt differently from the ID, an old mobile number in the record, or a search typed with a leading zero. Fix these before the dealer files and the RC prints.

Common Delhi registration number errors and how vehicle owners can fix each one
Most delays trace back to the address or the mobile number.

Check the draft before it prints

Ask the dealer to show the Vahan entry. Check the name, father’s or spouse’s name, address, model and colour.

Where can you get help with a Delhi registration?

For official help, use the Transport Department of the Government of NCT of Delhi at transport.delhi.gov.in and Vahan citizen services. For office-specific work, visit the zone that issued your number. Start with the Vahan guides for national services.

Before you visit

Check the department’s notices for current office timings and services. Offices often close on some Saturdays and on gazetted holidays.

Delhi vehicle registration questions

How long does Delhi vehicle registration take?
