Fitness certificate: how to get, check, download and renew your vehicle FC
A fitness certificate (FC) is the RTO's proof that a vehicle is roadworthy. Transport vehicles such as taxis, autos, buses and trucks need one from registration and renew it every one or two years. Private cars and bikes are fitness-tested when registration is renewed after 15 years. Apply on Vahan, pay the fee, pass the physical test and print the FC.
Key takeaways
- A fitness certificate is compulsory for every transport vehicle; without it the vehicle is not validly registered under section 56 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
- Private cars and bikes have no separate FC at first; their fitness test comes with registration renewal after 15 years.
- An FC lasts two years for transport vehicles up to eight years old and one year after that.
- Fees rose sharply in November 2025 for vehicles older than 10, 15 and 20 years; the Vahan fee screen shows your exact amount.
- You can apply, pay, check the fitness up to date and print the FC online, but the test itself is always in person.

What is a fitness certificate for a vehicle?
A fitness certificate is a document from the registering authority confirming that a vehicle meets the safety and emission standards of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. It is issued after a physical inspection and recorded in the national Vahan database, so it can be checked and printed online.

What the certificate proves
It shows that on the test date the brakes, lights, steering, tyres, body and exhaust were in safe working order. It carries the vehicle’s registration number, chassis and engine numbers, the inspecting authority and the fitness up to date.
Fitness certificate means legal roadworthiness
When people ask what a fitness certificate means, the short answer is legal permission to keep a transport vehicle on the road. Section 56 of the Motor Vehicles Act says a transport vehicle without a valid FC is not treated as validly registered.
What is the FC full form for vehicle papers?
The FC full form for vehicle documents is Fitness Certificate. RTO staff, insurers and fleet owners use “FC” as shorthand, so “FC renewal”, “FC date” and “FC copy” all refer to the vehicle’s certificate of fitness, not to any financial or company term.
FC full form in RTO forms
The FC full form in RTO usage is the same. In the Central Motor Vehicles Rules the document is called the “certificate of fitness” and is issued in Form 38, with the inspection report in Form 38A.
Where the abbreviation appears
You will see FC on Vahan menus, on permit applications, on insurance claim checklists for commercial vehicles and on the window stickers some fleet operators use to track due dates.
FC meaning in RTO: what is a vehicle FC?
The FC meaning in RTO offices is the fitness status of a vehicle. A vehicle FC is valid only for a fixed period, after which the vehicle must be inspected again. Officers check it before they approve permits, ownership transfer of commercial vehicles or interstate movement.
Vehicle FC meaning for owners
For an owner, the vehicle FC meaning is practical: a date to track. Miss it and a taxi, auto or truck cannot legally carry passengers or goods until it passes a fresh test.
FC versus registration
Registration records who owns the vehicle; the FC records whether it is safe. A commercial vehicle needs both to be valid at the same time.
What is the CF full form in vehicle records?
The CF full form in vehicle searches is usually “Certificate of Fitness”, the formal name used in the rules. People type CF and FC interchangeably. CF does not mean a separate document, so check the fitness details in your Vahan record rather than looking for a “CF certificate”.
Vehicle CF details on the record
Vehicle CF details are the FC number, issue date, validity date and inspecting office. They appear in the registration record that the owner can view on Vahan and in mParivahan.
When CF means something else
Some dealers and finance firms use CF for unrelated terms. If a document uses CF without explaining it, ask the issuer; do not assume it is a transport certificate.
Which vehicles need a vehicle fitness certificate?
Every transport vehicle needs a vehicle fitness certificate: taxis, autos, e-rickshaws, school and stage carriage buses, goods carriers and tractors registered for hire. Non-transport (private) vehicles do not hold a separate FC in their early years; their fitness is tested at registration renewal.

Transport vehicles
A yellow or black number plate usually means a transport vehicle. These need an FC from the first registration and must renew it on the rule 62 schedule throughout their life.
Private vehicles
A white-plate car or bike gets a registration valid for 15 years. When that is renewed, the RTO tests the vehicle’s fitness, and the renewed registration lasts five years.
Does a private car need a car fitness certificate?
A private car does not need a separate car fitness certificate for its first 15 years. At the end of that period the owner applies to renew the registration, and the RTO or testing station checks the car’s fitness before approving the renewal. The same test is repeated every five years.
Taxis and cabs
A car registered as a taxi is a transport vehicle. It needs a car fitness certificate from day one and renews it every two years until it is eight years old, then yearly.
City rules for ageing cars
Some cities restrict older petrol and diesel cars regardless of fitness. A valid test does not override those local rules, so check them before you renew.
Is a fitness certificate for bike owners required?
A private motorcycle needs no separate fitness certificate for bike owners until its registration is renewed after 15 years. An FC for bike use as a transport vehicle, such as a bike taxi where a state permits it, is required from registration, like any other commercial vehicle.
FC for two wheeler transport use
An FC for two wheeler transport registrations follows the same rule 62 validity as a car taxi. The fee falls in the motorcycle class of the rule 81 fee table.
FC for bike after 15 years
For a private bike, the FC for bike owners is effectively the fitness check done at the 15-year registration renewal. The renewed registration then runs for five years.
What is an auto fitness certificate?
An auto fitness certificate is the FC for a three-wheeler autorickshaw. Because autos carry paying passengers, they are transport vehicles and must hold a valid FC at all times. Auto fitness tests focus on brakes, lights, meter seals where required, body condition and emissions.
Auto fitness fee class
Autos fall in the three-wheeler class of the fee table. Age-based charges climb steeply after 15 years, which is a big cost for older autos.
E-rickshaws
Battery e-rickshaws are also transport vehicles. They need registration and an FC; there is no exemption because they are electric.
How to get fitness certificate?
How to get fitness certificate approval in short: apply on Vahan or at the RTO, pay the fee, take the vehicle for inspection and collect or print the FC once it passes. The online part saves a queue, but a real vehicle test is always required.
- Open Vahan citizen services. Choose vehicle related services and select the state and RTO on your plate.
- Choose the fitness service. Pick the fitness certificate option for a new FC or a renewal.
- Verify the vehicle. Enter the registration number and chassis digits, then the OTP sent to the registered mobile.
- Pay and book a slot. Pay the fee the portal calculates and choose a test date.
- Take the vehicle for the test. Bring the vehicle and original papers; once it passes, the FC is entered in the record.
New transport vehicles
For a new commercial vehicle, the first FC is usually processed along with registration through the dealer. Ask the dealer whether the first fitness has been recorded before taking delivery.
Offline route
You can still apply at the RTO counter. Staff enter the application on Vahan for you, so the record and fee are the same.
How to get fitness certificate for car?
How to get fitness certificate for car owners depends on the car’s use. A taxi applies for an FC on Vahan like any transport vehicle. A private car older than 15 years applies for registration renewal, and the fitness test is part of that application.
Private car route
Choose the registration renewal service on Vahan, upload documents, pay the renewal and test fees, then present the car. Our guide on RC renewal after 15 years fees explains the renewal charges.
Taxi route
Choose the fitness service, enter the permit details if asked, and book a slot. The car must have valid insurance, tax and PUC before the test.
How do you apply for a vehicle fitness certificate online?
To apply for a vehicle fitness certificate online, open Vahan citizen services, pick your state and RTO, choose the fitness option, verify the vehicle by OTP, upload documents where asked and pay. Save the application number; you need it to track progress and to print the certificate.
Uploads and slot booking
Some states ask for scans of insurance, PUC and the permit; others check these in the record. Slot booking appears after payment where the RTO or testing station uses appointments.
Tracking the application
Use the application number on the know your application status service to see whether the test result and approval are recorded.
Which fitness paper of car documents should you carry?
The fitness paper of car owners must carry on test day is the original RC, a valid insurance policy, a valid PUC certificate, the road tax receipt and, for renewals, the previous FC. Transport vehicles also need the permit. Bring the fee receipt and slot slip as well.

PUC and insurance first
An expired pollution certificate or insurance usually blocks the application. Renew the PUC certificate before you book the test.
Tax and challans
Pending road tax or unpaid challans can hold up approval in some states. Clear them before the test to avoid a second visit.
What is checked in a vehicle fitness test?
A vehicle fitness test checks brakes and braking efficiency, headlights and indicators, horn, tyres, steering, suspension, body and chassis condition, and exhaust emissions. At an automated testing station these are measured by machines and recorded without manual judgement.

Manual and automated testing
Under a 2022 notification, fitness testing was to move to registered automated testing stations (ATS) in phases. A September 2023 notification set 1 October 2024 as the date for mandatory ATS testing. Where no ATS is ready, check what your RTO currently uses.
Common failure points
Worn tyres, weak brakes, misaligned headlamps, smoke above limits and missing reflectors cause most failures. A quick service a week before the test saves a retest.
Fitness certificate Parivahan: which Vahan fitness services exist?
Fitness certificate Parivahan services sit inside Vahan citizen services under vehicle related services. The main Vahan fitness options are applying for or renewing fitness, paying the fee, checking application status and printing the certificate. Menu names vary slightly between states.
Vahan fitness certificate record
The Vahan fitness certificate is not a separate database. The FC is stored against the vehicle’s registration record, so anything the RTO approves shows up everywhere that record is read.
Parivahan fitness check by officers
A parivahan fitness check by an officer reads the same record. That is why a valid FC in the system matters more than an old paper copy.
How does fitness certificate download work?
A fitness certificate download gives you a printable copy of the FC already approved in the Vahan record. It does not issue a new certificate. You need the registration number or application number and, in many states, an OTP on the registered mobile.
Fitness download versus fresh FC
A fitness download is only a copy. If the FC has expired, the download shows the old validity; you must renew it to get a new date.
FC certificate download for fleets
An FC certificate download for each vehicle helps fleet owners keep digital files. Save each PDF with the plate number and expiry date in the file name.
Vehicle fitness certificate download PDF: what are the steps?
The vehicle fitness certificate download PDF steps are: open Vahan citizen services, choose the state and RTO, go to download documents, select the print fitness certificate option, enter the registration or application number and save the PDF from the browser.

Vehicle fitness certificate download online on a phone
A vehicle fitness certificate download online works on a phone browser. Allow pop-ups for the Vahan site so the PDF can open, then save it to files.
Vehicle fitness certificate download after renewal
Do the vehicle fitness certificate download again after each renewal. An older copy will show the expired date.
How to print fitness certificate from Vahan?
To print fitness certificate copies, open the PDF from the Vahan print option and use the browser’s print command at actual size on A4 paper. Printing “fit to page” can blur the QR code and small text that officers or buyers may need to read.
Vahan fitness certificate download for printing
A Vahan fitness certificate download is the same file whether you print it or keep it digital. Keep one paper copy in the vehicle and a digital copy on your phone.
When printing is not offered
If your state does not show a print option, ask the RTO for a certified copy. Do not use unofficial sites that claim to print certificates.
Can you get a duplicate fitness certificate download?
A duplicate fitness certificate download is possible when the FC is in the Vahan record: reprinting it from the print option gives a valid copy. If the original was lost and the state issues paper certificates only, apply at the RTO for a duplicate with an application and fee.
Lost certificate steps
File a police report if the loss matters for a permit or claim, then apply for a duplicate FC at the RTO that issued it. Keep the receipt until the new copy arrives.
Damaged copy
A torn or faded copy can simply be reprinted from Vahan. You do not need a duplicate application for wear and tear.
Why does online fitness certificate download fail?
An online fitness certificate download usually fails because the wrong state or RTO was chosen, the OTP went to an old mobile number, the renewal is not yet approved, or the browser blocked the PDF. Most of these take a few minutes to fix.

| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No record found | Wrong state or RTO | Choose the state and RTO on the plate |
| OTP not received | Old mobile number in the record | Update the mobile number on Vahan |
| Old FC date shown | Renewal not yet approved | Wait for approval, then print again |
| Print option missing | State issues paper FCs only | Ask the RTO for a certified copy |
| Blank PDF | Pop-ups blocked | Allow pop-ups or switch browser |
Server load
Vahan is busiest on weekday mornings. Try early or late in the day if pages time out.
Record mismatch
If the chassis number on the record differs from the vehicle, the RTO must correct the record before anything else.
How to check fitness certificate of vehicle online?
How to check fitness certificate of vehicle online: open the vehicle’s record through Vahan citizen services or a registered owner login and read the fitness validity line. Owners can also add the RC to the mParivahan app and see the fitness date in the RC details.
Online fitness check for your own vehicle
An online fitness check of your own vehicle is the safest route, because it uses your registered mobile and shows the complete record.
Checking a vehicle you plan to buy
For a used commercial vehicle, ask the seller to show the live record from their login. Do not rely on a photo of an old FC.
How to check fitness certificate of vehicle on your phone?
How to check fitness certificate of vehicle details on a phone: install the official mParivahan app, add your RC with the registration number and chassis digits, and open the RC details. The fitness validity appears with insurance and PUC dates. Our RTO app guide covers the app’s setup.
Check fitness from the app
To check fitness quickly before a trip, open the saved RC in the app. The date updates once the RTO approves a renewal.
No date shown
A blank fitness line on a private vehicle under 15 years is normal. It does not mean anything is wrong.
Vehicle fitness check online: what does fitness up to mean?
In a vehicle fitness check online, the fitness up to field shows the last day the current FC is valid. A future date means the vehicle is fit on paper; a past date means it has lapsed and must be tested again before it can be used for hire or reward.

Reading the date
The date is printed in day-month-year format. Count back sixty days to know the earliest day you can apply to renew.
Vehicle fitness check before permits
A vehicle fitness check is the first thing a permit office does. A lapsed date stops a permit renewal.
Fitness status check: where do FC details appear?
A fitness status check shows the FC number, issue date, expiry and issuing office in the Vahan record. FC details also appear on the printed certificate and, for owners, in mParivahan. For pending applications, the application status service shows the test stage.
FC details on the record
If the FC details look wrong, such as a date that did not update after renewal, contact the RTO with your receipt. Our vehicle information hub explains the rest of the record.
Fitness status during an application
While a renewal is pending, the old FC date stays on the record. The new date appears only after approval.
How long is fitness certificate validity?
Fitness certificate validity for a transport vehicle is two years while the vehicle is up to eight years old and one year after that, under rule 62 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules. Renewal can be sought up to sixty days before expiry. Private vehicles follow their registration renewal cycle.

| Vehicle type | Age | FC validity |
|---|---|---|
| Transport vehicle | Up to 8 years | 2 years |
| Transport vehicle | Over 8 years | 1 year |
| Private car or bike | Up to 15 years | No separate FC; registration valid 15 years |
| Private car or bike | Over 15 years | Fitness tested at each 5-year registration renewal |
Early renewal window
Applying in the sixty-day window keeps the vehicle working without a gap. The new period runs from the expiry of the old certificate where rules allow.
Older commercial vehicles
Yearly renewal after eight years means an old truck or bus faces twelve inspections between years eight and twenty.
What is bike fitness validity?
Bike fitness validity for a private motorcycle is tied to registration: 15 years from first registration, then five years after each renewal with a fitness test. A motorcycle registered as a transport vehicle follows the transport schedule of two years, then one year after eight years.
Bike after 15 years
The fitness test at 15 years decides whether the registration is renewed. A failed test means repairs before renewal.
Transport bikes
Where bike taxis are allowed, their FC must be valid at all times, like any taxi.
How to renew fitness certificate of vehicle?
How to renew fitness certificate of vehicle records: apply on Vahan up to sixty days before expiry, pay the renewal fee, book a test slot, present the vehicle with original papers and wait for the inspector’s approval. The new validity then appears in the record and on the printed FC.
Fitness certificate renewal after expiry
A fitness certificate renewal after expiry follows the same steps, but the vehicle cannot be used for hire in the gap. Bring it to the test without delay.
If the vehicle fails
Repair the faults on the inspection report and return for a retest. Ask whether a retest fee applies in your state.
How does vehicle fitness renewal work online?
Vehicle fitness renewal online means the application, fee payment and slot booking happen on Vahan; only the test is physical. Fitness renewal is approved once the inspector or ATS records a pass, after which you can print the new FC from the same portal.

What to keep ready
Keep the registration number, chassis digits, registered mobile, valid insurance and PUC. Transport vehicles should also have the permit details.
After approval
Download the new FC and check the fitness up to date. Share it with your insurer and permit office if they ask for it.
When is car fitness renewal due?
Car fitness renewal is due every two years for a taxi up to eight years old and every year after that. For a private car, the fitness test is due with registration renewal at 15 years and then every five years. The fitness up to or registration validity date tells you exactly when.
Reminders
Set a phone reminder for sixty days before the date. Many fleet operators also stick a small date label on the windscreen.
Car fitness and insurance
An insurer can question a claim on a transport vehicle with a lapsed FC. Keep the dates aligned.
How does two wheeler FC renewal online work?
Two wheeler FC renewal online works the same way as for cars: choose the fitness or registration renewal service on Vahan, pay, book a slot and take the bike for the test. Bike fitness renewal for private bikes is part of the 15-year registration renewal.
Two wheeler FC renewal for transport bikes
A two wheeler FC renewal for a bike taxi follows the transport schedule and the motorcycle fee class.
Old private bikes
For a bike over 15 years, the renewal fee and fitness charges both apply. See the fee tables below.
What are online fitness fees in 2026?
Online fitness fees in 2026 follow rule 81 as revised by the Central Motor Vehicles (Fifth Amendment) Rules, 2025, notified on 11 November 2025. There are two parts: a fitness test fee and an age-based charge that now starts once a vehicle is older than 10 years.
| Vehicle class | Test fee (regular) | Over 15 to 20 years | Over 20 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Motorcycle | ₹400 | ₹500 | ₹1,000 |
| Three-wheeler, quadricycle, LMV | ₹600 | ₹1,000 | ₹2,000 |
| Medium goods or passenger | ₹1,000 | ₹1,300 | ₹2,600 |
| Heavy goods or passenger | ₹1,000 | ₹1,500 | ₹3,000 |
Age-based fitness charge
| Vehicle class | Over 10 to 15 years | Over 15 to 20 years | Over 20 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Motorcycle | ₹200 | ₹1,000 | ₹2,000 |
| Three-wheeler or quadricycle | ₹200 | ₹3,500 | ₹7,000 |
| Light motor vehicle | ₹200 | ₹7,500 | ₹15,000 |
| Medium goods or passenger | ₹1,000 to ₹2,500 | ₹10,000 | ₹20,000 |
| Heavy goods or passenger | ₹1,000 to ₹2,500 | ₹12,500 | ₹25,000 |
These figures come from published summaries of the notification, not the Gazette text itself. For medium and heavy vehicles, the lower amount applies over 10 up to 13 years and the higher one over 13 up to 15 years. Always pay the amount Vahan calculates, since states can add service charges.
Why fees rose
The ministry raised charges for older vehicles to push owners towards replacing unsafe, polluting vehicles. Charges for vehicles up to 10 years old barely changed.
What is the car FC price and car FC renewal price?
The car FC price for a light motor vehicle is a ₹600 test fee under the 2025 table, plus the age-based charge once the car is older than 10 years. The car FC renewal price therefore rises sharply with age: ₹7,500 extra over 15 years and ₹15,000 over 20 years.

Private cars after 15 years
A private car also pays the registration renewal fee at 15 years, reported at ₹5,000 from April 2022. The full breakdown is on our RC renewal after 15 years fees page.
Service charges
States may add smart card, postal or user charges. The Vahan payment screen lists each head before you pay.
Is there a fitness renewal fee calculator for vehicle owners?
A fitness renewal fee calculator for vehicle owners is effectively built into Vahan: when you select the fitness service and enter your vehicle, the portal works out the fee from the vehicle class and age before payment. There is no need for a separate unofficial calculator.
Estimating yourself
Find the vehicle class on the RC, work out its age from the registration date, and read the two fee tables above. Add any state charges shown on Vahan.
Beware of paid calculators
Sites that ask for payment to “calculate” FC fees are not official. The government portal shows the amount free of charge.
What are FC charges for car in Karnataka?
FC charges for car in Karnataka follow the central rule 81 schedule, with any state service charges added. We could not verify a separate Karnataka fee list, so use the amount the Vahan fee screen shows for your Karnataka RTO. Press reports say the state revised and later partly withdrew old-vehicle charges after court directions.
Taxi FC in Karnataka
Karnataka taxis and autos renew their FC on the rule 62 schedule. Check whether your RTO uses an automated testing station or a manual lane.
Confirm before you pay
Call or visit your RTO if the Vahan amount looks different from the central table. State notifications can change the total.
How does FC renewal online Karnataka work?
FC renewal online Karnataka owners use the same Vahan citizen services: choose Karnataka and your RTO, select the fitness service, verify by OTP, pay and book a test. After the inspection, the new FC can be printed from the Vahan print option.
Karnataka documents
Carry the RC, insurance, PUC, tax receipt, permit for transport vehicles and the previous FC.
Where to get help
The Karnataka transport department and your local RTO can confirm slot availability and testing locations.
Fitness certificate for bike after 15 years: what changes?
A fitness certificate for bike after 15 years is really a fitness test during registration renewal. The bike must pass the inspection, and the owner pays both the registration renewal fee and the fitness charges for its age band. The renewed registration then lasts five years.
Costs for an old bike
The motorcycle test fee is ₹500 over 15 years, and the age-based charge is ₹1,000 over 15 years and ₹2,000 over 20 years, under the 2025 summaries.
Bike fitness renewal steps
Apply for registration renewal on Vahan, pay, take the bike for testing and print the renewed RC after approval.
Fitness certificate for car after 15 years: what is needed?
A fitness certificate for car after 15 years requires a registration renewal application, the renewal fee, the fitness test fee and the age-based charge, plus original RC, insurance and PUC. The car must pass the test; if it fails, it must be repaired and retested before renewal.
Choosing to scrap instead
Some owners choose scrappage when renewal and repairs cost more than the car is worth. Compare the total before booking the test.
Interstate and city rules
Check any city-level restrictions on old cars before renewing, because a renewed registration does not override them.
What is the fitness fine for an expired FC?
The fitness fine comes under section 192 of the Motor Vehicles Act, because a transport vehicle without a valid FC is treated as unregistered. Andhra Pradesh’s notified schedule, for example, lists amounts from ₹2,000 to ₹8,000 depending on the offence and repeat. States set their own compounding amounts.
Fitness fine and other penalties
A lapsed FC often comes with other offences such as an invalid permit. See our traffic fines list for the full penalty schedule.
Late renewal fee
A ₹50 per day late fee was added in 2021, but the Rajasthan High Court set it aside in a ruling reported in December 2024. Check whether your state still applies it.
Can you get a fitness challan?
Yes. A fitness challan can be issued at a roadside check or by camera-linked systems that read the Vahan record and find a lapsed FC. The challan appears against the vehicle number and must be paid or contested like any other e-challan.
Fitness challan for private vehicles
A private car over 15 years with unrenewed registration can also be fined, because the registration itself has lapsed.
Avoiding a challan
Renew in the sixty-day window and keep the new FC on your phone and in the vehicle.
Fitness certificate format for students: what should it contain?
A fitness certificate format for students is a medical certificate, not a vehicle document. There is no single national format; schools, colleges and boards publish their own. Most ask a registered medical practitioner to confirm the student is fit to study and take part in activities.
Typical contents
Usually: student’s name, age, photograph, identification marks, doctor’s name, registration number, signature and seal, date, and a statement of fitness. Use the format your institution gives you.
Where to get the format
Download it from the institution’s admission page or ask the office. Do not use a random template if the institution has its own.
Health certificate for college admission: is it a transport document?
No. A health certificate for college admission is issued by a doctor for the college, and has nothing to do with the RTO or Vahan. Colleges set the format and whether a government doctor must sign it.
Who signs it
Most colleges accept a registered medical practitioner; some ask for a government hospital doctor. Check the prospectus.
Driving licence medical forms
For a licence, the relevant document is a medical fitness certificate in Form 1A, which is different from a college form.
Is there a medical fitness certificate for college admission PDF?
A medical fitness certificate for college admission PDF is provided by each college or university, usually on its admission portal. There is no government transport PDF for it, and this site does not publish one because formats differ between institutions.
Finding the right PDF
Search the college’s official website or admission brochure. University-affiliated colleges often use the university’s format.
Filling it in
Print it, take it to the doctor, and get each field signed and stamped. Keep a scanned copy for online uploads.
Physical fitness certificate Andhra Pradesh: who issues it?
A physical fitness certificate Andhra Pradesh applicants need is issued by a doctor or medical board specified by the body that asks for it, such as a college, employer or recruitment board. It is not an RTO document, and its format comes from that body’s notification.
Recruitment requirements
Recruitment notices state whether a government civil surgeon or a medical board must issue it. Follow the notice exactly.
Vehicle FC in Andhra Pradesh
If you meant a vehicle FC in Andhra Pradesh, the Vahan steps on this page apply, using Andhra Pradesh as the state.
Is car fitness the same as an RC renewal?
Car fitness and RC renewal are linked for private cars but not the same. For a private car over 15 years, the fitness test is a step inside registration renewal. For a taxi, the FC is a separate certificate with its own validity and renewal.
| Item | Private car | Commercial cab |
|---|---|---|
| Separate FC | No | Yes |
| First fitness check | At 15-year renewal | At registration |
| Renewal interval | 5 years | 2 years, then 1 year after 8 years |
| Where recorded | Registration record | FC in Vahan record |
Which date to watch
A private owner watches the registration validity date; a taxi owner watches the fitness up to date.
One test, two outcomes
For a private car, passing the test renews the registration. For a taxi, it renews the FC only; registration and permit have their own dates.

How early can I renew my fitness certificate?
Rule 62 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules allows a renewal application up to sixty days before the current FC expires.
What happens if my vehicle fails the fitness test?
The inspector records the defects. Repair them and present the vehicle again for a retest; the FC is issued only after it passes.

Do electric vehicles need a fitness certificate?
An electric transport vehicle, such as an e-rickshaw or electric bus, needs an FC like any other transport vehicle. Private electric cars follow the private vehicle rules.
Is there a late fee for an expired FC?
A Rs 50 per day additional fee was added in 2021, but the Rajasthan High Court set it aside in late 2024. Check what Vahan charges in your state.
Can I drive a taxi with an expired fitness certificate?
No. Without a valid FC the vehicle is treated as not validly registered, and you can be fined. The permit and insurance claim can also be questioned.
