RC details for Maharashtra vehicles: MH transport, RTO codes and online services

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 26 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

To see RC details for a Maharashtra vehicle, type its MH number into Vahan citizen services or the mParivahan app. The free result shows the model, fuel, registering RTO and validity dates, with the owner name masked. Owners can download the full RC with an OTP. The two digits after MH name the office, such as MH-12 Pune or MH-02 Andheri.

Key takeaways

  • RC details for MH vehicles come from the national Vahan register, the same one every RTO in Maharashtra writes to.
  • Public searches mask the owner; the full RC opens only with an OTP to the registered mobile.
  • Pune's MH-12 series ran out in 2026, so new Pune vehicles now get MH-61 numbers.
  • Plates must use English letters and numerals; Marathi number plates break Rule 50 of the CMVR.
  • Pune auto fares rose to ₹30 for the first 1.5 km from 1 September 2026.
  • The ₹1,500 auto rickshaw payment was a one-time 2021 lockdown relief, not a running scheme.

Where can you check RC details in Maharashtra?

You can check RC details for any Maharashtra vehicle on three official services: Vahan citizen services, the mParivahan app and DigiLocker. All three read the same national register that every MH office updates. A plate search is free; the full certificate needs an OTP to the owner’s mobile.

Table showing where to check RC details for Maharashtra vehicles on Vahan, mParivahan and DigiLocker
State notices sit on the department site; the vehicle record sits on Vahan.

What the registration certificate holds

The certificate names the owner, the address, the chassis and engine numbers, the maker and model, the fuel, the seating, the date of registration and its validity. If a bank financed the vehicle, its name sits on the record as the financier until the loan is closed and cleared.

Which copy to trust

A screenshot proves nothing. A DigiLocker RC carries a digital signature, and the mParivahan virtual RC can be scanned by traffic police. When a buyer, insurer or officer asks for proof, show one of those live copies. Our vehicle information hub explains every national service.

What is MH transport?

MH transport is the everyday name for Maharashtra’s Motor Vehicles Department and its regional and sub-regional transport offices. The department registers vehicles, issues licences and permits, collects motor vehicle tax and enforces the Motor Vehicles Act through flying squads across the state’s districts.

Department, not bus service

People sometimes mix it up with the state bus company. Bus tickets and depots belong to the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation, which is a separate body. Your car’s RC, your licence and your permit all come from the Motor Vehicles Department, not from the bus operator.

Where the work happens

Policy, circulars and office lists sit on transport.maharashtra.gov.in. The vehicle record itself lives on Vahan, and licences on Sarathi. Most applications start on those national portals and are then approved by the office whose code appears on the plate.

How is the MH RTO network organised?

The MH RTO network has full regional offices in the big cities and sub-regional or deputy offices in smaller towns. Each office has its own two-digit code, from MH-01 in south Mumbai to MH-61, the newest Pune code. Applications go to the office matching your address.

Regional and sub-regional offices

A regional office such as Pune or Nagpur supervises several smaller offices nearby. Baramati (MH-42) and Akluj (MH-45), for instance, are separate codes for parts of Pune and Solapur districts. A sub-regional office handles the same services, only for a smaller area.

Why one district can have two codes

Large districts are split. Beed has MH-23 and MH-44, Jalgaon has MH-19, MH-52 and MH-54, and Sangli has MH-10 and MH-59. The taluka you live in decides the office, so check before you book a slot.

How does the Vahan portal Maharashtra work?

The Vahan portal Maharashtra uses is the national Vahan 4 system run by the National Informatics Centre. You pick Maharashtra and your office, then choose a service: tax payment, transfer, address change, duplicate RC, hypothecation, or fitness. The office approves the request on the same screen.

Choosing the state and office

Open Vahan citizen services, select Maharashtra and the RTO shown on your RC, or enter your registration number so the system picks it. Services that need the record, such as an address change, then ask for the last five chassis digits and an OTP.

Paying fees and tax

Fees are paid online through the payment gateway inside Vahan. Keep the receipt with its transaction number. If money leaves your account but the receipt fails, wait a short while and use the pending-transaction option instead of paying twice.

What does the Transport Commissioner Maharashtra do?

The Transport Commissioner Maharashtra heads the Motor Vehicles Department. The office issues state circulars, sets procedures for RTOs, oversees enforcement and road-safety drives, and handles appeals and policy questions. Individual applications still go to your local office, not to the Commissioner.

When to contact the Commissioner’s office

Write to the Commissioner’s office only after the local RTO has failed to resolve a complaint, or for matters of state policy such as permit rules. The current officer’s name, address and email are listed on transport.maharashtra.gov.in; they change with postings, so we do not repeat them here.

Circulars and notifications

Changes such as the HSRP deadline, fancy-number auctions and fare revisions are announced through circulars. Read the dated notice on the department site rather than relying on forwarded messages, which often carry old dates.

What is new Maharashtra transport?

New Maharashtra transport is a phrase people use for the department’s recent changes, though it is also the trading name of some private logistics firms, which have nothing to do with the RTO. The official updates include faceless services, a new e-challan portal and Pune’s MH-61 code.

Faceless and dealer-point services

Maharashtra now lets several services run faceless, with Aadhaar-based OTP authentication and no office visit. Dealers register new vehicles for buyers on Parivahan, so the buyer rarely visits the RTO at all.

New e-challan web portal

In 2026 the department launched a new web portal for Vahan e-challan payments after the older one had trouble with payments and receipts. If a challan payment failed earlier, check its status again on the official e-challan site.

Watch out for look-alike names

If a search for new Maharashtra transport brings up a truck or parcel company, that is a private business. Government services never ask you to pay through a personal bank account or a messaging app.

How does Maharashtra vehicle registration work for a new vehicle?

Maharashtra vehicle registration for a new car or bike starts at the dealer. The dealer enters your details on Vahan, collects road tax and fees, and the RTO approves the record and allots the number. You get an application number at once and the RC smart card later by post.

Timeline of Maharashtra vehicle registration from dealer purchase to RTO approval and MH number
Most new cars and bikes in the state never need an RTO queue.

What the buyer does

Give the dealer your address proof, identity proof, PAN or Form 60, and a mobile number you will keep. Check the spelling of your name on the draft before it is uploaded. Corrections after approval need a separate application.

Temporary registration

A vehicle bought in Maharashtra but meant for another state, or a chassis sent for body building, may first get temporary registration. It carries a temporary plate and lets the vehicle travel until permanent registration is complete.

Tax at registration

Private vehicles pay one-time tax when they are registered. The rate depends on the vehicle type, fuel and price. See the current Maharashtra road tax slabs before you compare on-road prices.

Which documents does a new MH car or bike need?

An MH registration uses the central forms of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, along with insurance and proof of address. For a showroom purchase the dealer gathers most of the set. For an auctioned, imported or self-built vehicle you file them yourself at the RTO.

Address proof decides the code

A Thane resident who buys a car from a Mumbai showroom still gets an MH-04 number. The office follows your home address, not the dealer’s.

What does an MH RTO vehicle registration owner search show?

An MH RTO vehicle registration owner search shows a partly masked owner name, not the full name, address or phone. The masking protects privacy and applies to every state. Full owner details are released only to the owner with an OTP, or to police, courts and insurers through official channels.

Why sites selling owner data are risky

Some apps and websites offer the full owner name or mobile number for a fee. They work from leaked or old data, may be wrong, and can breach privacy law. Use the official result only.

When you genuinely need the owner

After an accident or a hit-and-run, give the number to the police. They can trace the owner through the registering office. For a parking or property dispute, a written complaint to the police is the legal route.

A Maharashtra vehicle registration search takes under a minute on Vahan or mParivahan. Enter the MH number, pass the captcha, and the record appears. It works the same for a scooter in Kolhapur, a truck in Nagpur or a taxi in Mumbai.

Five steps for a Maharashtra vehicle registration search using an MH number on Vahan
A basic MH record check is free and needs no login.
  1. Open an official service. Go to Vahan citizen services or the mParivahan app published by NIC.
  2. Type the MH number. Enter the full number without spaces, for example MH12AB1234.
  3. Pass the check. Fill the captcha, or sign in with the OTP the app sends.
  4. Read the record. Note the maker, model, registering RTO and the insurance, fitness and tax dates.
  5. Match it to the vehicle. Compare the chassis digits on screen with the number stamped on the vehicle.

MH RTO vehicle registration search tips

For an MH RTO vehicle registration search, type a zero rather than the letter O, and leave out spaces and hyphens. Old single-letter series such as MH12A need the full number exactly as the RC prints it.

Maharashtra RTO vehicle registration search by SMS or app

A Maharashtra RTO vehicle registration search can also be done by SMS or in the app, explained below. The data is the same; only the screen changes.

MH transport registration search in mParivahan

The MH transport registration search in mParivahan is the quickest on a phone. Sign in with your mobile number, open the search, and type the MH number. You can also add your own vehicle to keep a virtual RC that officers can verify with a QR code.

Adding your own vehicle

To store your RC in the app, enter the chassis and engine digits and confirm with the OTP sent to the vehicle’s registered mobile. Install only the app published by the National Informatics Centre; copycats use similar icons.

Maharashtra transport vehicle registration search on a slow network

A Maharashtra transport vehicle registration search on mobile data in rural areas may time out. Retry once, then try the Vahan website or the SMS route. Do not pay a private app to “speed up” the search.

Which Maharashtra vehicle details are public?

The public result gives Maharashtra vehicle details that prove a vehicle exists and is legal, without exposing the owner. The owner’s OTP view adds the full certificate. Knowing the difference stops you being misled by sites claiming to sell “complete” records.

MH vehicle details for transport vehicles

MH vehicle details for a taxi, bus or goods carrier also show the permit and fitness validity. A transport vehicle with lapsed fitness should not ply, so fleet owners check these dates before trips.

Maharashtra vehicle registration details after a sale

The Maharashtra vehicle registration details keep the old owner until the transfer is approved. Check the record a few days after you file the transfer, and download a fresh copy.

Can you get RTO Maharashtra vehicle details by SMS?

Yes. For RTO Maharashtra vehicle details without internet, send an SMS in the format VAHAN followed by the registration number to 7738299899. The reply gives basic registration information. Your operator’s normal SMS charge may apply, and the owner name stays masked.

Rto vehicle information maharashtra in the reply

The RTO vehicle information Maharashtra SMS reply usually lists the model, registration date and validity. If no reply comes, the number may have been typed wrongly or the service may be busy; try the app instead.

Sending the message correctly

Write the number without spaces after the word VAHAN, for example VAHAN MH14AB1234. Messages with extra symbols often get no answer.

How do you check RC status Maharashtra?

To check RC status Maharashtra applications, use the application number from your dealer or receipt in Vahan’s application-status option. It shows whether the fee is paid, the inspection is done, the RTO has approved the record and the smart card has been printed or sent.

Common MH RTO vehicle registration search problems and quick fixes for each one
Most failed searches come from typing errors or an outdated mobile number.

Why the card is late

Approved records sometimes wait for card printing or for the post. The RC status guide explains each stage and what to do when a card does not arrive.

Using the PDF meanwhile

Once the record is approved, the RC can be downloaded even if the card is still in transit. Carry the virtual copy in mParivahan until the card reaches you.

How do you get an RC Maharashtra copy?

An RC Maharashtra copy can be saved from Vahan’s print option, stored in DigiLocker, or added to mParivahan. Each sends an OTP to the mobile number in the vehicle record. A downloaded copy is free; a new physical card needs a duplicate RC application.

Which copy to keep

Keep the DigiLocker copy for sharing and the mParivahan copy for roadside checks. The full method for every route is in our RC download guide.

Mobile number problems

If the OTP goes to a number you no longer use, update the mobile in the Vahan record first. Without it, every online service for the vehicle stalls.

What do Maharashtra RTO registration numbers mean?

Maharashtra RTO registration numbers follow the national pattern: MH for the state, two digits for the office, one to three series letters, and a number up to 9999. Reading the middle digits tells you which office registered the vehicle and so where its file sits.

Reading an example

In MH 14 GH 2301, MH is Maharashtra, 14 is Pimpri-Chinchwad, GH is the series and 2301 the number. Letters I and O are skipped in series to avoid confusion with 1 and 0.

Plate colours

Private vehicles use black letters on white, commercial vehicles black on yellow and electric vehicles a green background. Rented self-drive cars carry yellow letters on black.

MH number plate list: MH-01 to MH-30

The first part of the MH number plate list covers Mumbai, the Konkan, western Maharashtra, Khandesh, Marathwada and the start of Vidarbha. Codes MH-01 to MH-20 are mostly district headquarters; MH-21 to MH-30 add the rest of Marathwada and western Vidarbha.

Renamed districts

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar was Aurangabad and Dharashiv was Osmanabad. The codes MH-20 and MH-25 did not change with the names, so old and new plates match.

MH vehicle code list: MH-31 to MH-61

This second MH vehicle code block covers Nagpur and eastern Vidarbha, then the split-off offices added as towns grew. Codes from MH-41 onward mostly serve one or a few talukas, such as Malegaon, Baramati, Karad or Udgir, rather than a whole district.

MH-60 needs checking

MH-60 is listed for Palghar at Boisar, but the listing marks it as unconfirmed. Confirm with a Vahan search of a local number before relying on it.

What is the Mumbai number plate code?

There is no single Mumbai number plate code. Mumbai is split between MH-01 (south and central city), MH-02 (Bandra to Jogeshwari), MH-03 (Kurla to Mulund) and MH-47 (Goregaon to Dahisar). The suburbs beyond add MH-04 Thane, MH-43 Navi Mumbai and MH-58 Mira-Bhayandar.

Mumbai vehicle number by area

A Mumbai vehicle number starting MH-01 points to the island city, from Nariman Point to Wadala. BEST and municipal vehicles are also registered there. The Mumbai west RTO page covers the Andheri office in detail.

Why Borivali got its own code

Goregaon to Dahisar was handled by MH-02 until 2015, then moved to the new MH-47 office. Older vehicles from that belt still carry MH-02 numbers.

What is the Pune number plate code?

The Pune number plate code for the city is MH-12, issued by the office at Sangam Bridge. Pimpri-Chinchwad has MH-14, and Baramati, Indapur and Daund have MH-42. Since 2026, new vehicles of Pune city residents get MH-61 numbers from the same office.

Pune city versus PCMC

The boundary follows municipal and taluka limits. Hinjawadi, Wakad and the Maval and Khed talukas belong to MH-14. Haveli, Bhor, Purandar and Shirur talukas stay with the Pune city office.

Rural Pune

Vehicles from Baramati, Indapur and Daund are handled by the Baramati office, MH-42. Its numbers are as common on the Pune–Solapur highway as MH-12.

Why did MH 12 registration move to MH-61?

MH 12 registration numbers ran out in 2026. Every series up to ZZ had used all 9,999 numbers, so the Pune RTO began issuing MH-61 for new vehicles from around early September 2026. A three-letter MH-12 format was dropped because number-plate cameras could misread it.

Key facts on the MH 12 registration series running out and Pune moving to MH-61
Older MH-12 vehicles keep their numbers; only new ones get MH-61.

MH 12 number plate owners

If you already have an MH 12 number plate, nothing changes. The number stays valid for the life of the registration, and transfers or renewals keep it.

MH 12 vehicle registration after the switch

New MH 12 vehicle registration is paused while MH-61 runs. Reports describe MH-61 as temporary until an MH-12 “1A” series is ready, but no date was confirmed. Rush was heavy: the MH 61 B two-wheeler series nearly ran out within a week. The MH 12 which city page tracks the Pune office.

Fancy numbers in MH-61

The Pune office opened applications for choice numbers in the new series. Choice numbers are allotted for a fee fixed by state notification; check the current rate at the RTO before applying.

MH 14 registration: Pimpri-Chinchwad

MH 14 registration belongs to the Pimpri-Chinchwad office, which covers the municipal corporation area, Hinjawadi, parts of Mulshi, and the Junnar, Khed, Maval and Ambegaon talukas. Because the IT and auto belt grew fast, MH-14 is one of the busiest codes outside Mumbai.

Who registers at MH-14

Anyone with an address in those areas, including people working in Chakan or Talegaon factories. A Pune city resident who buys from a PCMC dealer still gets an MH-12 or MH-61 number.

Driving tests

Licence tests for the area are held on the office’s own track. Book a slot on Sarathi before you go.

MH 02 registration: which office?

MH 02 registration is issued by the Mumbai West office at Andheri. It now covers Bandra to Jogeshwari. Before 2015 it also covered Goregaon to Dahisar, which is why some older vehicles from the northern suburbs show MH-02 rather than MH-47.

Busy services at Andheri

Andheri handles many commercial and app-cab vehicles. Permit, fitness and badge work for taxis is common, so book online and arrive with originals.

MH 03 registration: Wadala office

MH 03 registration comes from the Mumbai East office at Wadala. It covers the eastern suburbs from Kurla to Mulund, plus Mankhurd. Ghatkopar, Chembur, Vikhroli and Bhandup vehicles usually carry MH-03 numbers.

MH 03 vehicle registration for new buyers

For MH 03 vehicle registration, the dealer uploads your details and Wadala approves them. You visit only if the vehicle needs physical inspection, such as a modified or imported vehicle.

Neighbouring Mumbai codes

West of the eastern suburbs is MH-02; north of Mulund is Thane, MH-04. Check your address against the boundary before booking.

MH 09 registration and MH09 passing

MH 09 registration belongs to Kolhapur, and the office covers the whole of Kolhapur district except the area given to Ichalkaranji (MH-51). An MH09 passing on a vehicle simply means it was registered in Kolhapur.

Kolhapur and Ichalkaranji

Ichalkaranji town and the Hatkanangle and Shirol talukas use MH-51. The rest of the district, including Kolhapur city, Karveer and Gadhinglaj, uses MH-09.

MH 46 registration: Panvel

MH 46 registration is issued by the Panvel office at Kalamboli. It covers the Kharghar-to-Panvel stretch and the Panvel, Uran, Khalapur and Karjat talukas, a fast-growing area around the new airport and JNPT port.

MH 46 passing and local services

Truck and trailer work is heavy here because of the port. The MH 46 passing page lists the office’s services and nearby codes.

Raigad’s other office

The rest of Raigad district, from Pen and Alibag to Mahad, is handled by MH-06 at Pen.

Which city is MH15 passing?

An MH15 passing vehicle is registered at the Nashik office, at Panchavati. The office covers Nashik, Dindori, Trimbakeshwar, Igatpuri, Sinnar, Niphad, Yeola, Chandvad, Peth and Surgana talukas. Malegaon and the northern talukas use a separate code, MH-41.

Nashik district split

Malegaon, Satana, Kalwan, Deola and Nandgaon belong to MH-41. If you live in one of those talukas, you register there, not in Nashik city.

Which city is MH27 passing?

MH27 passing means the vehicle was registered in Amravati, and the office covers the entire Amravati district. It is a Vidarbha code, close to the Madhya Pradesh border, so MH-27 vehicles are common on the roads to Betul and Burhanpur.

Nearby Vidarbha codes

Akola is MH-30, Yavatmal MH-29, Washim MH-37 and Wardha MH-32. Each office handles only its own district’s vehicles.

Which city is MH10 passing?

An MH10 passing points to Sangli. The office covers Sangli district except Jat taluka, which has its own code, MH-59. Miraj, Islampur, Tasgaon and Vita vehicles therefore carry MH-10 numbers.

Why Jat is separate

Jat is a large taluka on the Karnataka border. Giving it a separate office shortens the trip for residents who would otherwise drive to Sangli for inspections and tests.

Which city is MH37 passing?

MH37 passing belongs to Washim, a Vidarbha district carved out of Akola. The office covers the whole district, including Karanja, Risod and Mangrulpir. Older vehicles from the area may still show Akola’s MH-30 from before the office opened.

Checking an old Washim vehicle

A Vahan search names the current registering office. If a vehicle shows MH-30 but the owner lives in Washim, it has simply kept its original number.

What is the Beed passing number?

The Beed passing number depends on the taluka. MH-23, at Beed itself, covers Beed, Ashti, Gevrai, Patoda and Shirur Kasar. MH-44, at Ambajogai, covers Ambajogai, Kaij, Vadvani, Majalgaon, Parli and Dharur. Both codes are Beed district.

Which office to visit

Parli and Majalgaon residents go to Ambajogai, not Beed. Booking at the wrong office means the application is sent back.

What does Maharashtra passing mean?

Maharashtra passing is the everyday term for a vehicle registered in Maharashtra, carrying an MH number. Saying a car has “Pune passing” or “MH-15 passing” means it was registered at that office. It matters for tax, transfer and resale, because only that state’s offices change the record.

Outside-state passing in Maharashtra

A car with another state’s passing can be used in Maharashtra for a while. If it stays longer, it must be re-registered with an MH number, explained in the last section of this page.

Resale and passing

Buyers often prefer a local passing because transfer is simpler. A vehicle with another state’s number needs an NOC and fresh registration before it can carry an MH plate.

Where is RTO Virar?

The RTO Virar office is the Vasai sub-regional office, code MH-48. Listings place it at Chandansar-Bhatpada, Virar East, in Vasai taluka of Palghar district. It covers Vasai-Virar city. Confirm the address and timings on the department site before visiting.

What MH-48 covers

Nalasopara, Vasai and Virar vehicles carry MH-48 numbers. Mira Road and Bhayandar, just south, have their own office, MH-58. The rest of Palghar district is listed under MH-60 at Boisar, an entry that still needs confirming.

Is there an RTO Kharghar office?

There is no separate RTO Kharghar code. Kharghar falls under the Panvel office, MH-46, which listings place at the Central Facility Building in the Steel Market, Kalamboli. Vashi, Nerul and Belapur, just to the west, belong to the Navi Mumbai office, MH-43.

Kharghar or Navi Mumbai?

The split is easy to get wrong because both sit in the Navi Mumbai planning area. Kharghar residents go to Panvel; Nerul and Airoli residents go to Navi Mumbai. A Vahan search of a neighbour’s number confirms it.

No. A Marathi number plate, with the number written in Devanagari, is not allowed. Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules requires English capital letters and Arabic numerals. Writing “Maharashtra” in place of MH also breaks the rule, and police have issued challans for such plates.

Plate text must follow Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules.

Marathi number plate for car owners

A Marathi number plate for car owners may look attractive, but it can be refused at inspection and fined on the road. A 2020 statement by a state minister that Marathi plates would not be targeted was never turned into a rule change, so the central rule applies.

Where Marathi text is allowed

A small nameplate or sticker inside the car is not a registration mark. The plate itself must show only the registration number in the prescribed format.

What are the RTO rules for number plate in Maharashtra?

The RTO rules for number plate in Maharashtra follow the central rules: a high security registration plate (HSRP) on every vehicle, English letters, the prescribed size and font, and no extra words or images. Maharashtra made HSRP compulsory for vehicles registered before 1 April 2019, with set fitment charges.

Vehicle typeHSRP charge incl. fitment
Two-wheeler or tractorRs 450 plus GST
Three-wheelerRs 500 plus GST
Car, light, medium or heavy vehicleRs 745 plus GST
Fine without HSRP (from 1 July 2026)Rs 1,000
Source: HSRP charges in Maharashtra (ETV Bharat), HSRP deadline and fine (Free Press Journal). Checked October 2026.

HSRP deadline

The deadline for older vehicles was extended to 30 June 2026. From 1 July 2026, vehicles without HSRP face a fine and may be refused services such as transfer. Book through the official link described on our HSRP number plate Maharashtra online page.

Fancy plates

In February 2025 RTOs ran a statewide drive against fancy plates with stylised fonts, names or logos. Plain, legible plates avoid both fines and refusals at inspection.

What are the Pune auto meter rates?

The Pune auto meter rates rose from 1 September 2026 for Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The first 1.5 km now costs ₹30 and each further km ₹20, decided by the Regional Transport Authority. Meters were given until 28 February 2027 to be recalibrated.

Tariff card until the meter changes

Until a meter is recalibrated, the driver should show the RTO’s printed tariff card, which converts the old meter reading to the new fare. Ask to see it before paying more than the meter shows.

Night and outside-city fares

Reports put the night surcharge at 25% within city limits; rides outside municipal limits are reported at a higher rate. Confirm with the card. Mumbai fares are set separately; see rickshaw fare Mumbai.

Complaints

Overcharging or refusal can be reported to the Pune RTO with the auto’s number, time and route. Keep a photo of the meter.

What was the transport maharashtra gov in auto rickshaw 1500 scheme?

The transport maharashtra gov in auto rickshaw 1500 search refers to a one-time ₹1,500 relief for licensed autorickshaw permit holders, announced in the April 2021 lockdown package. Maharashtra auto rickshaw 1500 registration meant entering the permit, licence and vehicle numbers, linked to Aadhaar and a bank account, so the money could be paid directly. Reports at the time said many drivers waited weeks for the payment.

Is it open now?

No. It was a single payment for the lockdown period. Any site asking autorickshaw drivers for a fee to “apply for ₹1,500” today is not official. Welfare announcements for auto and taxi drivers since then are separate and appear as fresh circulars.

Who was eligible

Only drivers holding a valid autorickshaw permit and licence in the department’s records. Unlicensed drivers or vehicles without permits were left out, which drew criticism.

Checks that matter most

Look at the owner serial number, the financier entry, the registration validity and the PUC date. Ask the seller to open the RC live in mParivahan rather than sending a photo.

Pending challans

Unpaid e-challans stay with the vehicle and can block a transfer. Search the number on the official e-challan site before you pay.

How do MH vehicle registration details change after a transfer?

MH vehicle registration details change only when the RTO approves the transfer. The seller and buyer file Form 29 and Form 30 on Vahan, pay the fee and submit papers. Until approval, the seller stays the owner in law and remains liable for the vehicle.

Deadlines in the law

Section 50 of the Motor Vehicles Act asks the seller to report a sale within 14 days in the same state, and the buyer within 30 days. The vehicle ownership transfer online guide walks through the full process.

Loan vehicles

If the vehicle is financed, close the loan and file Form 35 with the bank’s NOC first. Otherwise the new RC still carries the financier.

How do you choose an MH registration number?

You can pick an MH registration number through the choice-number service, where the RTO lists available numbers in the current series and charges a fee fixed by state notification. Popular numbers go to auction among applicants. Otherwise the next number in the series is allotted.

Booking a choice number

Apply online before the dealer completes registration, pay the fee, and give the receipt to the dealer. If the vehicle is not registered within the set period, the reservation can lapse.

How does MH RTO registration work for vehicles from other states?

MH RTO registration of an outside-state vehicle is needed once it stays in Maharashtra for more than 12 months, under Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act. You get an NOC from the old state’s office, pay Maharashtra tax for the remaining life, and receive a new MH number.

Papers you need

Carry the old RC, the NOC, insurance, PUC, address proof in Maharashtra and, for a loan vehicle, the financier’s consent. The office inspects the vehicle before issuing the number.

BH series option

People who move between states often for work may qualify for the BH series, which avoids re-registration. Check eligibility before buying.

Registration validity

A private vehicle’s registration lasts 15 years from first registration and can then be renewed after a fitness check. Commercial vehicles depend on a valid fitness certificate.
