RC address change: how to update the address on your RC

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 7 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

An RC address change is filed with the RTO that holds your vehicle record, usually online through Vahan citizen services. Check that the registered mobile works, choose your state and RTO, pick the change of address service, upload proof of the new address with insurance and PUC, pay the amount shown and track the request. Report the move within 30 days of shifting.

Key takeaways

  • Section 49 of the Motor Vehicles Act asks owners to report a new address within 30 days.
  • Intimation of change of address in certificate of registration is one of the 18 Aadhaar-based contactless services MoRTH listed in 2021.
  • The OTP goes to the registered mobile, so update that number first if it has changed.
  • Fees differ by state; Nagaland, for example, publishes Rs 20 for Form 33, so pay what the Vahan fee screen shows.
  • An RC name correction is a separate request that usually needs proof of the correct name and an RTO check.

What is an RC address change?

An RC address change updates the owner’s address printed on the registration certificate and stored in the Vahan record. The registration number, chassis and engine details stay the same. Only the address field changes, and the RTO then prints or issues a certificate showing where you now live.

Five steps for an RC address change online through Vahan citizen services
Keep the application number from the receipt for tracking.

Why the RC address matters

Notices, renewal alerts and court summons for a traffic case go to the address on record. If that address is stale, you may never see a letter until a fine has grown or a deadline has passed.

Who files it

The registered owner files the request. A family member can help with the screens, but the OTP and the signature belong to the owner named on the RC.

When must you report a new registration address?

Your registration address has to be updated within 30 days of moving home or business, under Section 49(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act. A late report can be settled with a sum of up to Rs 100 instead of other action. Short stays you do not expect to last six months are outside the rule.

Where the wider moving rules sit

Moving often touches the licence, insurance and FASTag too. Our guide to a new address covers the full list of records and the late-report rules in detail.

How does RC address change online work on Vahan?

An RC address change online request runs through Vahan citizen services. You verify the vehicle with its registration number and chassis digits, confirm an OTP on the registered mobile, type the new address, upload proof and pay. The receipt carries an application number for tracking.

  1. Check the registered mobile. Make sure the phone number on the RC record still works, because the OTP goes there.
  2. Open Vahan citizen services. Select your state and the RTO that holds the vehicle record.
  3. Pick the change of address service. Enter the registration number and chassis digits, verify the OTP and type the new address.
  4. Upload proof and pay. Upload proof of the new address, insurance and PUC, then pay the amount the portal shows.
  5. Track and collect. Save the receipt, track the application number and collect or receive the updated RC.

If the OTP step fails

A number that no longer works stops the form at verification. Finish an RC mobile number update first, then come back to the address request.

Aadhaar and contactless filing

MoRTH’s 2021 list of 18 contactless services includes intimation of change of address in certificate of registration. Aadhaar authentication works best when Aadhaar already shows the new address.

RC book address change: which documents do you need?

For an RC book address change, keep the original RC or a clean scan, proof of the new address, a valid insurance certificate and a valid PUC. A financed vehicle may need the lender’s details. Your state’s upload screen sets the final list, so read it before you scan anything.

Your state's upload screen decides the final list.

Good address proof

Use a document that already shows the new address in your name: Aadhaar, a passport, a registered rent agreement or a recent utility bill are common choices. The name on it must match the RC exactly.

Scanning tips

Scan in daylight, keep every corner in frame and save each page as a separate file. Blurred uploads are a frequent reason for a request coming back.

What does a change of address in RC book cost?

A change of address in RC book costs a small state-set amount, plus any smart card, service or postal charge. We could not confirm one central figure. Nagaland publishes Rs 20 for Form 33, which shows the scale, but your own state’s total appears on the Vahan fee screen.

Paying safely

Pay only on the Vahan payment page that opens from your application. Agents who quote a flat total in advance cannot know your state’s charges without the fee screen.

How do you change vehicle registration address after moving to another RTO area?

To change vehicle registration address after moving into another RTO’s area in the same state, you send the intimation to the RTO covering the new address. That office records it and informs the original office. The registration number does not change for a move inside the state.

Picking the right office on Vahan

Choose the RTO for your new area if your state’s portal offers that option. If the service only appears under the old office, file there and the record moves across.

Moving to another state

An interstate move is a bigger job involving an NOC and, after 12 months, a new registration mark. The new address guide linked above explains that route.

Can you do an RC book address change online in Maharashtra?

Yes. Maharashtra runs its RTOs on the national Vahan system and offers faceless services through Parivahan, so an RC book address change online in Maharashtra follows the same national screens. Choose Maharashtra and your RTO, such as Pune or Mumbai Central, and complete the steps above.

What may still need a visit

Some Maharashtra offices ask for originals to be shown or a signed copy of the form. The receipt states whether a visit is needed.

What is RC name correction?

An RC name correction fixes the owner’s name on the registration certificate when it was entered wrongly, such as a spelling mistake, a missing initial or a swapped surname. It is different from a transfer of ownership, because the owner stays the same person and only the record is corrected.

A spelling fix and a move follow different routes at the RTO.

A typing error at registration is a record correction. A legal change of name, after marriage or a gazette notice, is a change of particulars and usually needs stronger proof.

How does RC name correction online work?

RC name correction online depends on your state. Where Vahan lists a correction or change of particulars service, you start it like the address request: verify the vehicle, upload proof of the correct name and pay. Where no such option appears, the RTO handles it at the counter.

Checking for the option

Open Vahan citizen services, select the state and RTO and look through the vehicle services list for correction or particulars. If nothing matches, call or visit the RTO before paying anyone.

When the dealer made the error

For a new vehicle, a wrong name often comes from the dealer’s entry. Ask the dealer to raise the correction with the RTO while the sale papers are still fresh.

Which papers support a name correction in RC book?

A name correction in RC book usually needs the original RC, an identity document showing the correct name, and for a legal change a marriage certificate or gazette notification. Some RTOs ask for a sworn affidavit. We could not confirm one national list, so check with your RTO.

Keep names consistent

Before applying, make sure Aadhaar, PAN and insurance show the same spelling. A mismatch between these and the RC is the commonest reason a correction stalls.

Is RC book correction online possible for other details?

RC book correction online covers only some fields. The mobile number and address have their own online services. Chassis, engine, colour or body changes count as an alteration of the vehicle and go through the RTO, often with an inspection.

Which fields go where

Detail to changeUsual route
AddressChange of address service on Vahan
Mobile numberMobile update service on Vahan
Owner name spellingRTO correction, online where listed
Colour or bodyAlteration request with RTO inspection

How do you track the request and get the updated RC?

Use the application number on your receipt in the Vahan application status option. Once approved, the RTO prints the updated certificate or makes the new record available for download. Delivery by post or counter pickup depends on the state, and the receipt usually says which.

Your digital copy

After approval, fetch the RC again in DigiLocker or mParivahan so the digital copy shows the new address too.

What goes wrong with an RC address change, and how do you fix it?

Most stuck requests come from four causes: an old mobile number, pending tax or challans on the record, unclear proof, and a name on the proof that does not match the RC. Each one has a simple fix, and fixing it first saves a second application fee.

Common problems when you change vehicle registration address and how to fix them
Most stuck requests trace back to the phone number or dues.

Request returned by the RTO

Read the remark on the status page, upload the missing or clearer document and resubmit under the same application where the portal allows it.

Name mismatch blocks the address update

If the proof shows a different spelling, sort out the name correction first. The address update goes through easily once both match.

RC address change questions

Can I do an RC address change without visiting the RTO?

In many states, yes. MoRTH listed the intimation of change of address in the registration certificate among its Aadhaar-based contactless services in 2021. Some RTOs still ask to see originals, so read the instructions on your receipt.

Does the registration number change with a new address?

No, not within the same state. The address field is updated in the existing record and the number stays with the vehicle.

How long do I have to report a new address?

Thirty days from the move under Section 49 of the Motor Vehicles Act. A late report can attract a sum of up to Rs 100, and states can set their own scale.

Is there a separate form for RC name correction?

We could not confirm one central form for a name correction on an RC. Ask your RTO, or check the Vahan service list for your state, before you apply.

Does updating the RC also update my driving licence?

No. The licence sits in the Sarathi database and needs its own address request.

Can I change the address on a financed vehicle's RC?

Yes. The lender's entry stays on the record. Tell the bank or NBFC about the new address too, so its records match the RC.
