RC download: how to get your vehicle registration certificate online
RC download means saving an official copy of your vehicle's registration certificate from a government source. Open Vahan citizen services, pick your state, choose the print RC option, enter the registration number and chassis digits, and verify with the OTP sent to your registered mobile. You can also keep a virtual RC in mParivahan or a signed RC in DigiLocker.
Key takeaways
- An RC download works only through Vahan, mParivahan or DigiLocker; all three read the same national record.
- The OTP goes to the mobile number registered with the vehicle, so update that number first if it has changed.
- A DigiLocker RC is digitally signed and is the best copy to share with insurers and buyers.
- Every state, from Rajasthan to Kerala, uses the same Vahan screens; only the state choice changes.
- A downloaded copy does not replace a lost original for sale or transfer; that needs a duplicate RC.

What does RC download mean?
RC download is the process of saving a government-issued copy of your registration certificate (RC) from the national Vahan database. The copy shows the same details as the RTO record: owner, vehicle, chassis and engine numbers, and validity. It takes about two minutes once you have your phone.

Why owners download the RC
Most people need a copy when the original smart card is at home, with a bank or misplaced. Insurers, used-car buyers and loan officers also ask for an RC copy, and a fresh download shows the current record rather than an old photocopy.
Who can download it
The registered owner can, because the official routes check ownership with an OTP sent to the mobile number in the vehicle record. A family member can do it only if they have access to that phone.
Can I download RC online?
Yes. You can download your RC online from Vahan citizen services, the mParivahan app or DigiLocker, all of which are government services run by MoRTH and NIC. You need the registration number, a few chassis digits and the phone linked to the vehicle.
What you need before you start
Keep the registration number exactly as it appears on the plate, the chassis number (printed on the RC and stamped on the frame) and the registered mobile within reach. An engine number is sometimes asked for in the app.
Can we download RC online for any vehicle?
Any vehicle registered on Vahan can be downloaded, which covers nearly every state. Very old records that were never digitised may not appear; the RTO has to update them first. Can I download RC book online for a vehicle in another state? Yes, choose the state on its plate. How to get RC copy online without a computer? Every route works on a phone browser.
Download vehicle RC online: the step-by-step method
To download vehicle RC copies from the portal, open Vahan citizen services, choose your state and RTO, select the print or download RC service, enter the vehicle number and chassis digits, and verify the OTP. The PDF opens in your browser for saving or printing.
- Open Vahan citizen services. Go to vahan.parivahan.gov.in and choose the state and RTO where the vehicle is registered.
- Choose the print RC option. Open the download documents or print RC service.
- Enter vehicle details. Type the registration number and the chassis digits the screen asks for.
- Verify with OTP. Enter the code sent to the mobile number in the vehicle record.
- Save the PDF. Download the copy, keep it on your phone and email it to yourself.
Menu names can change
The portal is updated often, so the option may read Print RC, Download Document or similar. If you cannot find it, use the search box on the citizen services page and type “RC”. Screens differ slightly between states, but the inputs are the same.
Chassis digits
Some screens ask for the last five characters of the chassis number, others for the full number. Copy it from your RC or insurance policy, because a single wrong letter returns an error.
How to download RC book online?
To download RC book online, follow the same Vahan route: the “RC book” name comes from the old paper booklet, but today the record prints as a one-page certificate. The downloaded copy carries the same details that the booklet or smart card shows.
Booklet versus downloaded copy
The downloaded RC copy looks like a printed certificate, not a booklet. It is drawn from the current record, so it may show newer details, such as a renewed validity or a removed loan, that your old booklet never recorded.
Saving it properly
Rename the file with your vehicle number, store it in your phone’s files and email it to yourself. A cloud copy helps if your phone is lost.
How do you get the RC download PDF?
The RC download PDF opens at the last step of the Vahan print service. Use your browser’s download or print-to-PDF button to save it. On a phone, the file usually lands in the Downloads folder; on a computer, you can choose the folder.
RC book download PDF on a phone
If the RC book download PDF does not open, install a PDF reader or try Chrome. Some phones block pop-ups by default; allow them for the Vahan site so the file can open.
Printing a clear copy
Print on A4 paper at actual size, not “fit to page”, so the QR code and text stay sharp. A blurry print may be refused by banks and insurers.
What is an RC book?
An RC book is the common name for the vehicle’s registration certificate. It proves that a vehicle is registered with an RTO under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and names its legal owner. Older RCs were paper booklets; newer ones are smart cards.
Vehicle RC book in daily use
Your vehicle RC book is needed for insurance renewal, selling the vehicle, loans, fitness tests and interstate transfer. Police may ask to see it, physically or digitally, at a roadside check.
Registration certificate of bike and car
The registration certificate of a bike and of a car are the same document type. Only the vehicle class (for example, motorcycle or LMV) and some technical fields differ.
What is the RC full form?
The RC full form is Registration Certificate. It is the certificate of registration issued by an RTO for every motor vehicle used on public roads. For the Hindi meaning and the other abbreviations on the card, see our RC book full form guide.
RC certificate and registration certificate
“RC certificate” repeats the word certificate, but people use it widely. Registration certificate, RC book, RC card and RC smart card all describe the same document.
Where the term appears
You will see “Certificate of Registration” printed on top of the smart card and on the downloaded copy, along with the issuing state and RTO.
How do you download virtual RC on your phone?
To download virtual RC copies, sign in to the mParivahan app with your mobile number, open the RC section, enter the registration number and verify with chassis and engine digits and an OTP. The virtual RC appears with a QR code that officers can scan.

Virtual RC versus PDF
A virtual RC is live: it refreshes from the record and can be verified by scanning. A PDF is a snapshot from the day you saved it. Keep both. For app errors, see our mParivahan RC check guide.
When the app is the better choice
Use the app for roadside checks and quick look-ups, and the PDF for offices that want a printed copy on paper.
How to get digital RC book from DigiLocker?
To get a digital RC book, sign in to DigiLocker, open issued documents, search for the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, choose Registration of Vehicles, enter the registration number and chassis digits and tap get document. The signed RC is saved in your account.

Why the DigiLocker copy carries weight
DigiLocker pulls the RC from the issuer, so it is a digitally signed document. A signed DigiLocker RC is legally valid under the IT Act, 2000 when used in electronic form.
Sharing the RC
You can share the DigiLocker RC with insurers, banks and buyers from inside the app, which is safer than sending a photo of your card on chat apps.
Which RC download route should you pick: portal, app or DigiLocker?
For an RC download you can print, use the Vahan portal. For roadside checks, use mParivahan. For sharing a signed copy, use DigiLocker. All three show the same national record, so the choice depends on how you will use the copy.

| Route | What you get | Inputs | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vahan citizen services | Printable RC PDF | Vehicle number, chassis digits, OTP | Paper copy for offices |
| mParivahan app | Virtual RC with QR code | Vehicle number, chassis and engine digits, OTP | Roadside checks |
| DigiLocker | Digitally signed issued RC | Vehicle number, chassis digits | Sharing with insurers and buyers |
Using more than one route
Most owners set up all three once. The DigiLocker and app copies then stay current, and the PDF is there whenever someone wants paper.
What none of them do
None of these routes replace a lost original for sale or transfer. For that, apply for a duplicate RC download and RTO-issued duplicate with Form 26.
How does bike RC download work?
Bike RC download works exactly like a car: choose the state and RTO, enter the two-wheeler’s registration number and chassis digits, and verify the OTP. The copy shows the vehicle class as motorcycle or scooter, with engine capacity and fuel type.
Bike RC book download from the app
For a bike RC book download to your phone, the mParivahan virtual RC is the most practical option, because riders rarely carry paper. Keep the app signed in so the RC opens even on a weak signal.
How to get bike RC online for an old scooter
If an older scooter’s record does not appear, its data may not have been moved to Vahan. Visit the registering RTO with your old booklet and ask them to update the record.
How does car RC download work?
Car RC download uses the same Vahan inputs. For a car RC book download, check that the registration number has no spaces or extra characters, and enter the chassis digits from the RC or insurance policy. The PDF shows the car’s class, seating and fuel.
Financed cars
For a car bought on loan, the copy shows the bank as hypothecation holder. That is normal and does not stop the download.
Company and leased cars
The OTP goes to the company’s registered number, so the fleet or admin team usually handles the download for company cars.
How to download RC card online?
To download RC card online, use the same Vahan print service; there is no separate card download. The PDF contains every field that the smart card shows. To get RC card online as a phone document, add it to mParivahan or DigiLocker; the physical card is always posted by the RTO.
RC card download versus card reprint
An RC card download gives you a file. A new physical card has to be applied for at the RTO, either as a duplicate or as a conversion from an old booklet.
Rc smart card status
If you are waiting for a card to arrive by post, track it on our RC card status page using the application number.
What is a bike smart card?
A bike smart card is the credit-card-sized RC that RTOs issue for two-wheelers. It replaces the old paper booklet and carries the same record, often with a chip or QR code. It fits in a wallet, which suits riders.

What the card holds
The card shows the registration number, owner, chassis and engine numbers, class, fuel and validity. Some states print the financier’s name on the card while a loan is active.
Losing a bike smart card
Report the loss and apply for a duplicate. Until it arrives, carry the virtual RC in mParivahan.
How do you apply for RC smart card?
To apply for RC smart card conversion from an old booklet, use the Vahan citizen services of your state, where the option usually sits under duplicate RC or RC conversion. You pay the state’s charge online and submit the old RC at the RTO if asked.
Charges vary by state
Smart card charges and postage are set by each state and appear on the Vahan payment screen before you pay. We do not list a national amount because there is none.
Delivery
Cards are printed centrally in many states and sent by speed post to the address in the record, so keep that address up to date.
What is RC particular of vehicle?
An RC particular of vehicle is a printout of the vehicle’s complete registration record, sometimes called the RC particulars. It is used by courts, banks and insurers when they want the record itself rather than the certificate held by the owner.

RC particular versus RC copy
An RC particular lists the record, often including transfer and loan history. The RC copy is the certificate. Some offices accept either; ask which one they want.
Who issues it
The RTO issues certified extracts on application. Online, the closest option is the Vahan print service, which gives the current certificate.
How to get an RC particular download?
For an RC particular download, try the print options on Vahan citizen services first; some states list a “vehicle particulars” or “RC particulars” print there. Where it is not offered online, apply at the registering RTO with ID proof and a written request.
When a download is not enough
Courts and some banks want a certified copy with an RTO seal. Ask the office whether a Vahan printout will do before you travel.
Keeping track
Note the request number or receipt from the RTO. It helps if the extract has to be collected later.
What is an RC report?
An RC report is an informal name for a summary of a vehicle’s registration record: owner count, registration date, validity, insurance status and any loan. Used-car buyers ask for an RC report before paying for a vehicle.
Official sources for an RC report
The owner can show the downloaded RC and the DigiLocker copy. Basic vehicle details with a masked owner name can be checked in mParivahan by anyone.
Paid RC report sites
Private sites sell “RC reports” built from scraped data. They are not official, may be outdated and can misuse your number. Rely on government copies instead.
How to print RC online?
To print RC online, open the Vahan print RC service, verify with the OTP and use your browser’s print command on the PDF that opens. How to print RC online at a cyber café: do it yourself, and sign out afterwards.
RC print quality
An RC print on plain A4 paper is enough for most offices. Some banks prefer a colour print so the QR code and logos are clear.
Print RC online from a phone
Phones can send the PDF to a wireless printer, or you can share it to a print shop. Delete it from shared devices afterwards.
What is RC reprint?
RC reprint usually means getting a new physical copy of the certificate from the RTO, for example when the smart card is damaged. It is different from downloading a PDF, which you can repeat at no charge as often as you like.
Reprint versus duplicate
A damaged card can often be reprinted on surrender of the old one. A lost card needs a duplicate RC with Form 26, which follows the RTO’s own process.
When to choose a reprint
Choose a reprint when the card is cracked, faded or has an unreadable chip, and keep the old card to hand in.
What is RC number?
The RC number is the vehicle’s registration number, the same one on its number plate, for example a state code, RTO code, series and four digits. It is the key you enter for every RC download, challan check or insurance quote.
| Part of the number | Example position | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| State code | First two letters | State where the vehicle was registered |
| RTO code | Next two digits | Office that holds the record |
| Series | One to three letters | Batch issued by that office |
| Number | Last four digits | Unique number within the series |
Reading the number
The first two letters show the state, the next two digits the RTO, then a letter series and a four-digit number. BH series numbers follow a different pattern for people who move between states.
RC number versus chassis number
The RC number can change on re-registration; the chassis number stays with the vehicle for life. That is why the chassis is used to confirm ownership.
How does RC book look like?
How does RC book look like today? It is usually a smart card with the state’s name, the words Certificate of Registration, the owner’s details on one side and the vehicle’s technical details on the other. How does RC look like in PDF? A single page with the same fields.

RC book image and RC book photo
An RC book image or RC book photo on your phone is useful as a personal reference, but it is not a verified document. Officers and insurers can ask for the live or signed copy instead.
Rc book image for listings
When you sell a vehicle online, blur the chassis number and owner address in any photo you post.
What did the old RC book look like?
The old RC book was a small paper or card booklet with handwritten or typed entries, RTO stamps and signatures. Transfers, loans and renewals were added as new endorsements on its pages, so an old booklet often carries several stamps.
Is an RC book old format still valid?
Yes, as long as the vehicle’s record matches it. Many offices now ask for the Vahan copy as well, so download one to support the booklet.
Converting it
You can apply to convert an old booklet into a smart card through your state’s Vahan services. See “How do you apply for RC smart card?” above.
What is the Indian Union vehicle registration certificate?
Indian Union vehicle registration certificate is the wording printed on smart card RCs, showing that the certificate is issued under the national scheme rather than a single state’s format. It follows the common format the central government set for every state.
Why the wording matters
The common format lets police and RTOs in any state read the card. A card from Kerala looks broadly the same as one from Haryana.
Does it change anything for the owner?
No. It is the same RC, issued by your state’s RTO and stored in the national Vahan register.
How to get vehicle registration certificate online?
To get a vehicle registration certificate online for a vehicle that is already registered, download the RC from Vahan or DigiLocker. For a brand-new vehicle, the dealer files the registration on Vahan, and the RC is issued once the RTO approves it.
Registration certificate online for new owners
After a purchase, ask the dealer for the application number. You can download the RC once the registration is approved, before the card arrives by post.
How to get vehicle registration certificate after a transfer
After an ownership transfer is approved, the RC is reissued in the buyer’s name; download it in the same way.
How to get vehicle registration papers?
How to get vehicle registration papers depends on what you need. The RC copy comes from Vahan or DigiLocker. The insurance policy comes from the insurer, the PUC from the testing centre, and the sale invoice from the dealer.
Bike registration paper set
A full bike registration paper set means the RC, insurance and PUC. Keep all three as digital copies on your phone and the originals at home.
Registration certificate download for papers lost in a move
A registration certificate download replaces nothing legally, but it is enough to prove registration while you apply for a duplicate.
How to get new RC book?
How to get new RC book depends on the reason. A new vehicle gets one through the dealer’s registration. A lost or damaged card needs a duplicate or reprint. An old booklet can be converted to a smart card through Vahan services.
After buying a new vehicle
The dealer submits the registration, the RTO approves it and the card is posted to you. You can download the RC as soon as it is approved.
After an address change
Apply for the address change on Vahan. The RTO issues an updated RC, which you can download after approval.
How to apply for RC?
How to apply for RC services: open Vahan citizen services, choose your state and RTO, pick the service (new registration, duplicate, transfer or address change), fill the form, upload documents and pay online. RC apply online saves a trip, though some services still need an RTO visit.
Rc apply online for a new vehicle
New registrations are filed by the dealer on Vahan in most states. Owners apply directly only for services on already registered vehicles.
Tracking the application
Keep the application number from the receipt. You will need it to track the service and to download the RC afterwards.
How do you write an application to RTO office for RC book?
An application to RTO office for RC book is a short letter addressed to the Registering Authority. State your name, address, vehicle number, chassis and engine numbers, the service you need, and list the documents attached. Sign it and keep a copy.
When a letter is needed
Most RTOs now use Vahan forms, but a covering letter helps for record corrections, old records that were not digitised, or for collecting a certified RC particular.
Documents to attach
Attach ID and address proof, a copy of the RC or booklet, insurance and PUC, plus the relevant form, such as Form 26 for a duplicate.
How to check hypothecation of vehicle online?
To check hypothecation of vehicle online, download the RC or open the DigiLocker copy: a financed vehicle shows the bank’s name in the hypothecation or financier field. If the field is blank, no loan is recorded. Read our hypothecation meaning guide for the terms.

Removing a loan from the RC
After the loan is repaid, the bank issues a no-dues certificate and Form 35. The owner applies on Vahan to remove the entry; the new RC then shows no financier.
Before buying a used vehicle
Ask the seller to download a fresh RC in front of you. A financier entry means the bank still has an interest in the vehicle.
How to check bike RC online?
To check bike RC online, the owner can download the RC from Vahan or open the virtual RC in mParivahan. A buyer can search the number in mParivahan for basic details with a masked owner name, which is enough to confirm the model and dates.
What to match
Match the chassis number on the bike’s frame and the engine number with the RC. Any mismatch is a reason to walk away.
When details look wrong
Ask the seller to visit the RTO and correct the record before you pay.
How to find RC book online?
To find RC book online after misplacing the card, download it from Vahan with your vehicle number and chassis digits, or open DigiLocker, which may already hold it. You need no application number for this; the registration number is enough.
If you have lost the chassis number too
Find it on your insurance policy, the sale invoice or the chassis plate on the vehicle itself.
If the card is truly lost
Lodge a report with the police, then apply for a duplicate RC with Form 26 through Vahan services.

|---|---|---|
| OTP not received | Old mobile number in record | Update the mobile number on Vahan |
| Record not found | Wrong state or RTO chosen | Pick the state and RTO on the plate |

Is RC download free?
Downloading or printing the RC copy from Vahan, mParivahan or DigiLocker has no charge. A new smart card or a duplicate RC is a paid RTO service.
Can I download my RC without a registered mobile number?
No. Every official route sends an OTP to the number in the vehicle record. Update the mobile number through Vahan or at the RTO first.
Can I download someone else's RC?
Only with access to the OTP sent to that vehicle's registered mobile. Third-party sites that offer full RC copies of any vehicle are not official.
Is a printed RC PDF accepted by traffic police?
Officers prefer a live document in mParivahan or DigiLocker, which they can verify by QR code. Carry the virtual RC on your phone as well as any paper copy.
How long does an RC download take?
Usually about two minutes once the OTP arrives. Delays mostly come from server load or an OTP going to an old number.
My vehicle is new. When can I download the RC?
Once the RTO approves the registration, the record appears on Vahan and the copy can be downloaded, even before the smart card reaches you by post.
Does the downloaded RC show my loan?
Yes. If the vehicle is hypothecated, the financier's name appears on the RC until Form 35 is processed and the entry is removed.
Can I download an RC for a vehicle registered in another state?
Yes. Choose the state shown on the vehicle's plate, not the state you live in now, unless the vehicle has been re-registered.
What if the RC shows the wrong name or address?
The download shows what the RTO recorded. Apply for a correction or address change on Vahan, then download the copy again after approval.
Is RC download possible for a commercial vehicle?
Yes. Transport vehicles use the same Vahan record. Permits and fitness certificates are separate documents with their own services.
Can a company download the RC of a company car?
Yes, through the mobile number registered for the company in the record. Fleet managers usually keep the DigiLocker copy for each vehicle.
Does an RC download expire?
The file does not expire, but it shows the record on the day you saved it. Download a fresh copy after any change such as renewal or loan closure.
