In short

The short answer to up me kitne jile hai is 75. Uttar Pradesh has 75 districts (jile) grouped into 18 divisions (mandal). The largest district by area is Lakhimpur Kheri and the smallest is Hapur. A temporary 76th district was created for the 2025 Maha Kumbh and later merged back, so the permanent count remains 75.

UP me kitne jile hai, aaj ki sahi ginti kya hai?

The answer to up me kitne jile hai today is 75 districts. They are grouped into 18 mandal (divisions). This count has held since 2011, when Hapur, Shamli and Sambhal were added. A temporary district for the 2025 Kumbh came and went, and a proposed 76th district had not been notified by October 2026.

Key numbers card answering up me kitne jile hai: 75 districts and 18 mandal
Seventy-five districts sit inside eighteen commissioner divisions.

The one-line answer for students

Write it as: Uttar Pradesh has 75 districts in 18 divisions, with Lucknow as the capital and Prayagraj as the seat of the Allahabad High Court. That line covers the count, the next level up and the two cities examiners most often ask about.

Why you still see other numbers

Old textbooks, short videos and quiz apps were written at different times. Some show 70, 71 or 72 districts from before 2011; others show 76 because of the 2024 Kumbh district or the Kalyan Singh Nagar announcement. Check the date of whatever you are reading.

Uttar Pradesh mein kitne jile hain aur kitne mandal?

Uttar Pradesh mein kitne jile hain, and how many mandal sit above them? The state has 75 jile under 18 mandal. A mandal is a group of three to six neighbouring districts under one Commissioner. Kanpur, Lucknow and Meerut mandal are the largest, with six districts each.

A district (jila) is run by the District Magistrate, also called the Collector. A division (mandal) is run by a Divisional Commissioner, who supervises the District Magistrates of that group and hears revenue appeals. So the two numbers answer different questions: 75 is the district count, 18 is the division count.

Uttar Pradesh mein kul kitne jile hain: 75 ya 76?

Uttar Pradesh mein kul kitne jile hain is a fair question, because 76 has appeared in the news twice. The permanent, working count is still 75. One 76th district was temporary by design, and the other was only a proposal at the time of writing.

The Maha Kumbh Mela district

On 2 December 2024 the state declared the Maha Kumbh area of Prayagraj a temporary new district. It covered 67 villages from four tehsils, and the Mela officer held district-level powers for the 13 January to 26 February 2025 event. Afterwards the area went back to Prayagraj district.

The proposed Kalyan Singh Nagar

In October 2025 reports said the government had started work on a district named after former Chief Minister Kalyan Singh, built from Atrauli and Gangiri tehsils of Aligarh and Dibai of Bulandshahr. We found no final notification by October 2026, so it is not counted here.

Up mein total kitne jile hain, aur ye ginti kaise badhi?

Up mein total kitne jile hain has changed many times. Most of today’s 75 are old districts, but nearly 30 were carved out after 1970. The biggest single wave came in 1997, when twelve new districts were formed in one year. The last permanent additions came in 2011.

  • 1949–1981: Rampur (1949), Lalitpur (1974), Ghaziabad (1976) and Kanpur Dehat (1981).
  • 1988–1989: Mau, Siddharthnagar, Firozabad, Sonbhadra and Maharajganj.
  • 1994–1995: Kushinagar, Bhadohi, Mahoba and Ambedkar Nagar.
  • 1997: Amroha, Auraiya, Baghpat, Balrampur, Chandauli, Chitrakoot, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Hathras, Kannauj, Kaushambi, Sant Kabir Nagar and Shravasti.

Up ke jile kaise bante hain?

New up ke jile are created by the state government, not by the Centre. The revenue department collects proposals from the District Magistrates concerned, decides which tehsils move, and then issues a notification. Only after that notification does the new district count.

Who decides

The Revenue Council and the state Cabinet handle the proposal. The Kalyan Singh Nagar plan, for example, began with the revenue council asking the Aligarh and Bulandshahr District Magistrates for proposals. Announcements and speeches alone do not change the count.

What follows a notification

A new district needs a District Magistrate, a police chief, courts, treasury and, for vehicle owners, a transport office with its own code. Old records, including vehicle registrations, usually stay valid; only new work moves to the new offices.

Up ke 75 jilon ke naam me kaun se naam badle gaye?

Several of the up ke 75 jilon ke naam you see today are new names for existing districts. Renaming does not change the count, but it confuses older lists. These are the changes most often asked about.

Up me kitne jile h, Uttarakhand banne ke baad?

Up me kitne jile h after Uttarakhand? Uttarakhand was carved out on 9 November 2000 and took the hill districts with it; it has 13 districts today. Everything counted on this page is what remained in Uttar Pradesh plus the districts created since.

That split is also why vehicle codes for UP start at UP 11. The codes UP 01 to UP 10 belonged to the hill districts and went out of use when those areas got the UK series. If an old document shows a code below UP 11, it was issued before November 2000.

The four words describe different layers. A mandal groups districts; a jila is the main unit of administration; a tehsil is a revenue sub-division of a district; a block is a development unit for rural schemes. Uttar Pradesh has 18 mandal and 75 jile, with tehsils and blocks below them.

Comparison of jila and mandal in Uttar Pradesh administration and who heads each
A mandal is a layer above the district, not a district itself.

Tehsil

A tehsil is headed by a Sub-Divisional Magistrate and a Tehsildar. It keeps land records, issues income, caste and residence certificates, and collects land revenue. Bigger districts have more tehsils. We did not find a current, reliable total for the whole state, so check the district website.

Block and gram panchayat

A development block groups gram panchayats for rural schemes. Villages, panchayats and their reserved seats are covered in our UP village name guide, which explains how to find a village in its block and district.

Up me kitne rajya hai has a simple answer: none. Uttar Pradesh is itself one of India’s 28 states. A state is divided into districts, not into smaller states. The question usually comes from mixing up rajya (state), mandal (division) and jila (district).

That makes Uttar Pradesh one of the states with the most neighbours. Vehicles cross these borders every day; if you move your vehicle to UP from another state for good, the registration rules and road tax apply, explained in our UP road tax guide.

Up me kitne district hai aur kitne RTO code?

Up me kitne district hai and how many vehicle codes go with them? The 75 districts use codes from UP 11 to UP 96, one main code per district. Some numbers in that range are unused, and some big cities have extra offices, so the code count and the district count are close but not identical.

Each district has at least one office code on the plate.

Gaps in the number range

Numbers such as UP 18, UP 28, UP 29, UP 39, UP 48, UP 49, UP 59, UP 68, UP 69, UP 88 and UP 89 do not appear in the standard district table. Commercial lists sometimes show UP 18 for Greater Noida; treat that as unconfirmed.

The district entries above give each main code. The full list with offices, series letters and sub-offices is on our UP RTO code page.

Up mein kitne district hai aur vehicle number me jila kaise dikhta hai?
