What is vahan in English?

Vahan meaning: where does the word come from?

The vahan meaning goes back to the Sanskrit root vah, which means to carry. Adding the suffix -ana gives vahana, a noun for a vehicle, carriage, horse or other draught animal, and for the act of carrying, driving or riding. Hindi borrowed it as vahan, dropping the final vowel.

What is a vahana in Hindu tradition?

In Hindu tradition a vahana is the animal or mythical being a deity rides, often called the deity’s mount. The word literally means “that which carries”. Each vahana is linked with its deity in art and temples, and many carry symbolic meaning, such as strength or wisdom.

Shiva rides Nandi the bull, Vishnu rides Garuda, Ganesha rides a mouse, Durga rides a lion, Kartikeya rides a peacock and Saraswati rides a hamsa, a swan or goose.

Is the word masculine or feminine in Hindi?

The name fits the job. Vahan is the national vehicle registration system that the National Informatics Centre (NIC) designs, develops and maintains for the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). It holds the state and national registers of vehicles, so a “vehicle” system is simply called Vahan.

The three best-known transport names are all Hindi or Sanskrit words. Vahan is the vehicle, parivahan means transport or transportation, and sarathi means charioteer, the person who drives.
