Vehicle identification number (VIN): what the 17 characters mean and how to check yours
A vehicle identification number (VIN) is the 17-character code a manufacturer gives one single car, bike or truck. In India it is punched into the frame and printed as the chassis number on your RC. The first three characters name the maker, the rest describe and single out that vehicle. Check it on your RC, virtual RC, insurance policy and the frame stamp.
Key takeaways
- A VIN is a 17-character factory code that identifies one vehicle; Indian rules require it to stay unique for 30 years.
- On Indian papers the VIN appears in the chassis number field of the RC and insurance policy.
- Only the first three characters (the maker code) mean the same thing everywhere; Indian makers decide what most of the rest carries.
- US-style rules such as a check digit in position 9 and a model year in position 10 do not automatically apply to Indian vehicles.
- To check a VIN, match the frame stamp, the RC, the virtual RC and the policy; any mismatch needs the RTO.

What is a VIN number?
A vehicle identification number is a 17-character code that a manufacturer assigns to one individual vehicle. Indian standard AIS-065 says the code must let each vehicle be clearly identified over a period of 30 years, so no two cars, bikes or trucks built in that time should ever share it.

A code for the machine, not the owner
The VIN says nothing about who owns the vehicle or where it is registered. It is fixed at the factory, before any buyer exists, and it stays the same through every sale, state transfer and re-registration that follows.
Why the short form is everywhere
Insurers, police, RTOs and dealers all need one reference that cannot drift. A plate can be replaced and an owner can change, but the VIN stays welded to the metal, which makes it the anchor every other record points to.
VIN number meaning, word by word
The VIN number meaning is in the three words: vehicle, identification and number. Strictly, “VIN number” repeats the word number, but it is how most people search, and it means the same thing. In India the code is better known as the chassis number, and some motorcycle manuals print it as the frame number.
Vehicle
The rule covers motor vehicles such as two-wheelers, three-wheelers, cars, buses and goods carriers. AIS-065 does not apply to trailers, tractors or construction equipment, which follow separate standards.
Identification
The point is to tell one vehicle apart from every other, including identical-looking units off the same line on the same day.
Number
It is really an alphanumeric string: capital letters and digits, no spaces, dashes or asterisks.
Vehicle identification number for owners in India
For an owner in India, the vehicle identification number is mostly a matching key. Online services from Vahan to insurers ask for some or all of it to confirm that you are dealing with the right vehicle. The pillar guide to Vahan services shows how those registration services fit together.
When you will be asked for it
You need the code, or its last five characters, when you renew insurance, pay tax online, update the mobile number on the RC, apply for a duplicate RC, take a loan or report a theft.
Why the RTO trusts it
At registration, the RTO copies the stamped code into the national Vahan record. From then on, every application is checked against that entry, so a wrong character on a form usually means a rejected request.
Why did the world settle on 17 characters?
Before the late 1970s, makers used their own serial formats of different lengths. The international standard ISO 3779 was issued in 1979, and in 1981 the United States made a fixed 17-character VIN compulsory for every on-road vehicle sold there. Most of the world, including India, now uses the same length.
One length, many rule books
The shared ISO frame fixes the length and the meaning of the first three characters. Countries then add their own rules for the rest, which is why a European, an American and an Indian VIN can read differently.
How India adopted it
India’s version is AIS-065, prepared by the Automotive Industry Standards Committee. The BIS page on maker codes confirms that the Indian VIN is the 17-character code defined in ISO 3779 and ISO 4030.
Who gives Indian makers their VIN prefix?
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the World Manufacturer Identifier coordinator for India. It issues the three-character maker code that starts every VIN on a vehicle built here. Wikipedia’s VIN article lists the ranges MA to ME, MY to M0 and P5 to P0 for India.
What the prefix tells you
The prefix names the manufacturer and points to the country where the vehicle was built. A car assembled in India by a foreign brand usually carries an Indian prefix, while a fully imported unit keeps its home country’s code.
Small makers
A manufacturer building fewer than 500 vehicles a year gets 9 as the third character, and characters 3 to 5 of the last section then identify that maker.
What does each position in a VIN tell you?
Under AIS-065, positions 1 to 3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier, 4 to 9 the Vehicle Descriptor Section and 10 to 17 the Vehicle Indicator Section. Only the first block has a public, shared meaning. The others follow each maker’s own key, except that the last four characters at least must be digits.
| Positions | Indian rule (AIS-065) | Common North American rule |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | Maker code (WMI) | Maker code (WMI) |
| 4–8 | Descriptor chosen by the maker | Body, engine, restraint type |
| 9 | Part of the maker’s descriptor | Check digit |
| 10 | Start of the vehicle section; maker decides | Model year |
| 11 | Maker decides | Assembly plant |
| 12–17 | Serial; last four always numeric | Production sequence |

Why the middle is private
Makers use the descriptor block for model, body, engine or variant in whatever order suits their factories. Without the maker’s code book, nobody outside can be sure what a given letter in position 6 means.
What to take from the table
Read the first three characters with confidence. Treat the rest as the maker’s own language, and rely on the RC and invoice for model and date details.
Is the ninth character a check digit?
In North America and China, position 9 is a check digit: a value calculated from the other sixteen characters that exposes typing errors and crude fakes. Europe does not require it, and Indian makers are not bound by the US rule, so an Indian VIN’s ninth character is usually just part of the descriptor.
Why this matters to you
Some free online checkers run the US formula on every code and then flag a genuine Indian VIN as “invalid”. That warning means nothing for a vehicle built to Indian rules.
When the check digit does apply
A car imported from the United States or Canada will carry a valid check digit. If a seller claims such an import and the digit fails, ask for the import papers before going further.
Does the tenth character show the model year?
Only on North American vehicles is the model year reliably coded in position 10. AIS-065 lets each Indian maker choose where the month and year of production go: anywhere in the last fourteen characters, or marked next to the VIN, with the code declared to the testing agency.
Where to find the date instead
For an Indian vehicle, read the manufacturing month and year on the maker’s plate, the sale invoice or the RC. Rule 122 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules is headed “Embossment of chassis number and engine number and date of manufacture”, so the date is marked on the vehicle too.
A caution on online year decoders
A website that reads an Indian car’s tenth character as a model year is applying the wrong rule book. Trust the papers over the guess.
What is VIN number in car?
The answer to what is VIN number in car is simple: it is the car’s chassis number. On a car, the 17-character code is punched into the body shell or chassis metal and repeated on the maker’s plate. Your RC, insurance schedule and sale invoice print it in full.
Minimum size of the characters
AIS-065 sets a minimum character height of 7 mm on the frame of four-wheelers and 4 mm on the maker’s plate, so the code should be readable without a magnifier.
One car, one code
Even two cars of the same model, colour and variant, built minutes apart, carry different VINs. The final digits are always a running serial.
Where is the VIN stamped on a car?
Insurer guides list two usual places on a car: an embossed number in the engine bay near the firewall, and a VIN plate or sticker under the bonnet. Some models put the stamp on the floor, under a seat or beneath a carpet flap. The owner’s manual names the spot for your model.
Stamp versus plate
The legal mark is the code punched or embossed into the metal. A plate or sticker repeats it for convenience, but a pencil print for RTO work is taken from the stamp, not the sticker.
Lighting and cleaning
Bring a torch and a soft cloth. Wipe dust or wax gently; never scrape with a blade or wire brush, which can damage the characters.
Where is the VIN on a motorcycle or scooter?
On most motorcycles the VIN is stamped on the steering head, the tube behind the handlebar, often on the right side. Some models use the front down tube. Scooters vary widely and may hide the code under the seat, the floor mat or a small panel. For model-specific spots, see our guide on chassis number meaning.
Smaller characters on two-wheelers
The minimum height on a two- or three-wheeler frame is 4 mm, so the stamp is smaller than on a car. Turn the handlebar fully to one side to see it clearly.
Where else is the VIN printed?
Beyond the metal, the VIN appears on almost every paper linked to the vehicle. The table shows the usual places and what each one is good for.
| Where | What it shows | Best used for |
|---|---|---|
| RC (smart card or paper) | Full chassis number as the RTO recorded it | The official reference |
| Virtual RC (mParivahan, DigiLocker) | Same field, read from Vahan | Checking from your phone |
| Insurance policy schedule | Chassis number and engine number | Claims and renewals |
| Dealer sale invoice | Full code at the time of sale | Matching a new vehicle |
| Loan papers | Chassis number of the financed vehicle | Hypothecation and closure |
Which one wins in a dispute
The RC entry is the reference for every RTO service. If any other paper differs, ask the issuer to correct its copy to match the RC and the stamp.
Keep a clean copy
Note the code in a safe place or keep a photo of the RC. It saves time when you are away from the vehicle.
How to check VIN number?
How to check VIN number for your own vehicle: compare four sources and make sure they agree. Start with the RC, open the virtual RC on your phone, look at the insurance schedule and finally read the stamp on the frame. All four should show the same seventeen characters in the same order.
- Read the RC. Find the chassis number field on the smart card or paper RC.
- Open the virtual RC. Add the vehicle to mParivahan or DigiLocker and read the same field after OTP sign-in.
- Compare the policy. Check the chassis number on the insurance schedule against the RC.
- Read the frame stamp. Find the punched code on the frame or body and match it character by character.

Match character by character
Read the code aloud in groups of four or five. Mistakes hide in the middle, where a B and an 8 or an S and a 5 look alike on a worn stamp.
How to check VIN number on your RC
The RC lists the VIN in the chassis number field, usually near the engine number. On the smart card it is on the front; older paper RC books print it in the vehicle details block. If your card is lost, you can save a fresh copy through our RC download guide.
What the printout looks like
A Vahan RC printout shows the full code, with no masking, because it is generated for the registered owner after OTP verification to the mobile number in the record.
When the field is blank or short
Some older vehicles, especially imports or those registered before uniform VIN rules, show a shorter code. Treat whatever the RTO recorded as the reference.
How to check VIN number in mParivahan or DigiLocker
In the mParivahan app, add your vehicle as a virtual RC using the registration number, part of the chassis and engine numbers and an OTP. In DigiLocker, go to Issued Documents, choose Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, then Registration of Vehicles, and enter the plate number with the chassis digits it asks for.
Why the app asks for part of the code
Asking for a few chassis digits proves you hold the vehicle’s papers. It stops a stranger from pulling your RC with only your plate number.
A digital copy you can show
The DigiLocker RC is digitally signed and treated as valid under the IT Act when shown electronically, so it doubles as a handy reference copy.
Check automobile VIN number before buying
To check automobile VIN number on a used car or bike, compare the stamp on the frame with the seller’s RC and policy, then look at the stamp itself. Ground metal, weld marks, fresh paint around the code or uneven characters are warning signs. Do these checks before any money changes hands.

Confirm the maker code
The first three characters should match the brand on the bonnet or tank. A Maruti body with another maker’s prefix is a clear reason to walk away.
Ask for the full RC
A seller who refuses to show the full RC, or offers only a photocopy, makes the VIN check impossible. Insist on the original or the virtual RC on their phone.
Can you check a VIN for theft?
Yes. The NCRB central citizen services portal has a Generate Vehicle NOC option that checks whether a vehicle is listed in crime or theft records. You can search by registration number, chassis number, engine number or make and model, and the service is free. Our NCRB vehicle report guide walks through it.
Use the chassis number, not just the plate
Thieves often swap plates. Searching by the VIN catches a stolen vehicle wearing someone else’s registration.
Keep the result
Download the NOC and keep it with the sale papers. It records that you checked before buying.
Do online VIN decoders work for Indian vehicles?
Partly. Free decoders read the maker code correctly, because the first three characters are shared worldwide. Most are built around North American data, though, so their model-year, plant and check-digit readings are often wrong for Indian vehicles. Use them for the maker only.
Paid history reports
Foreign history reports draw on records from their own countries and rarely hold Indian accident or ownership data. For a vehicle registered in India, the Vahan record and the NCRB check are the useful sources.
Avoid data-selling sites
Some sites promise full owner details from a VIN. The Internet Freedom Foundation has reported Vahan data being sold online, and using such services is risky. Stick to official tools.
How is a VIN different from a registration number?
The VIN identifies the vehicle; the registration number identifies its registration. The maker sets the VIN at the factory and it never changes. The RTO assigns the registration number, shown on the plate, and it can change when a vehicle is re-registered in another state.

| Point | VIN | Registration number |
|---|---|---|
| Who gives it | Manufacturer | RTO |
| Where you see it | Frame stamp, maker’s plate, RC | Number plate, RC |
| Format | 17 letters and digits | State code, RTO code, series, number |
| Can it change? | No | Yes, on re-registration |
Why both appear on the RC
The RC links the two: it records which frame was given which registration. That link is what makes a plate search meaningful.
VIN or engine code: which identifies the vehicle?
The VIN identifies the whole vehicle, while the engine number identifies only the engine fitted to it. An engine can be replaced with RTO approval; the frame cannot. For where the engine code is stamped, see our engine number guide.
Why forms ask for both
Insurers and the RTO record both codes so that a swapped engine or a rebuilt frame shows up as a mismatch.
Does the frame stamp carry the same code as the VIN?
On vehicles built to AIS-065, yes. The standard requires the VIN to be punched or embossed on the chassis or frame and also shown on the maker’s plate, so the frame stamp and the VIN are one code. Some imports or older vehicles carry a shorter factory frame number instead.
Which code to enter on forms
Enter exactly what your RC shows, whatever the form calls the field: VIN, chassis number or frame number.
Do electric vehicles have a VIN?
Yes. An electric car, scooter or e-rickshaw is still a motor vehicle that must be registered, so the maker assigns it a VIN and the RC carries it as the chassis number. What changes is the second code: an EV has a motor number where a petrol vehicle has an engine number.
Same checks, same rules
Every VIN check on this page works the same way for an EV, including the NCRB theft search by chassis number.
What if the VIN on the RC does not match?
First rule out a copying error by reading the stamp again in good light. If the RC truly differs from the frame, collect the sale invoice, insurance papers and a pencil print of the stamp, and ask the registering RTO for a correction. Do not ride with a known mismatch for long.
If you are buying
A mismatch on a used vehicle is the seller’s problem to fix before the sale, not yours after it.
Can a VIN be changed or re-stamped?
No. The VIN stays with the frame for its whole life. AIS-065 allows only one fix: if the factory punched a wrong number, the wrong code is crossed out and the correct one punched or etched exactly above or below it. Any other re-stamping is a serious red flag.
Rusted or damaged stamps
If corrosion or an accident has made the stamp unreadable, go to the RTO with the papers and ask how they want it handled. Never let a mechanic punch a new code.
Why do insurers and lenders ask for the VIN?
An insurer prices and pays a claim on one specific vehicle, and a lender holds a charge over one specific vehicle. The VIN is the only code that stays fixed for both. A brand-new vehicle is often reported to the insurance database by engine and chassis number before it even has a plate.
The last five characters
Many online services, from tax payment to mobile number updates on Vahan, ask only for the last five characters of the chassis number plus an OTP.
Which copying mistakes spoil a VIN?
Most rejected forms come from copying, not from the stamp. Since I, O and Q are never used, an O is always a zero and an I is always a one. Watch for B and 8, S and 5, Z and 2, and a missing character that turns seventeen into sixteen.
A quick self-check
Count the characters, then read the code back against the RC in groups. Copy-paste from the virtual RC where you can.
Is it safe to share your VIN?
Share the full code only with your insurer, RTO, lender, dealer or a genuine buyer. Together with the engine number and your plate, it can be used to try adding your RC to an app or filing false requests. Public searches mask most of it for that reason.

Photos of your vehicle
Before posting a sale advert, crop or blur the VIN plate and the RC in any photo. A buyer who is serious can see it in person.

What is a vehicle identification number in simple words?
It is the vehicle's fingerprint: a 17-character code the manufacturer assigns to one vehicle and punches into its frame. No two vehicles made within 30 years should share it.
What does VIN stand for?
VIN stands for vehicle identification number. In India most papers call the same code the chassis number, and some bike manuals call it the frame number.
How many characters does a VIN have?
Seventeen. They are capital letters and digits only, and the letters I, O and Q are never used, so no character can be confused with 1 or 0.
How do I check the VIN of my car?
Read the chassis number on your RC or virtual RC, then match it with the insurance policy and the stamp on the car's body. All of them should be identical.
Can I find the VIN from a registration number?
For your own vehicle, yes, through the virtual RC in mParivahan or DigiLocker. Public searches on someone else's vehicle show only a masked part of the code.
Does an Indian VIN show the year of manufacture?
Indian rules let each maker choose where the month and year code goes, and some put it next to the VIN instead. Check the maker's plate, invoice or RC for the date.
Is the 9th character of an Indian VIN a check digit?
Not necessarily. The check digit is compulsory in North America and China. Indian makers follow their own descriptor scheme, so do not run a US check-digit test on an Indian code.
Can I check a VIN for theft in India?
Yes. The NCRB citizen services portal lets you search by chassis number, engine number or registration number and generate a vehicle NOC free of charge.
Can a VIN be changed?
No. It belongs to the frame for life. A factory punching error may only be corrected by crossing out the wrong code and stamping the right one directly above or below it.
