GJ 14 which city: the Amreli district registration office
GJ 14 which city? It is Amreli, the district town in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat. The state RTO list gives this one office the entire Amreli district, so Savarkundla, Rajula, Dhari, Babra, Lathi and the coastal Jafrabad taluka all carry GJ 14 on locally registered vehicles. Bhavnagar next door is a different office, GJ 04.
Key takeaways
- GJ 14 is Amreli, and the listed office covers the whole district.
- All 11 talukas share it, from Babra in the north to Jafrabad on the coast.
- Pipavav port lies in Rajula taluka, about 15 km south of Rajula town.
- Neighbouring codes are GJ 03 Rajkot, GJ 33 Botad, GJ 04 Bhavnagar, GJ 11 Junagadh and GJ 32 Veraval.
- We could not verify the office's street address, phone or hours; confirm them on the Gujarat transport site.

GJ 14 which city is it?
If you are wondering GJ 14 which city, the answer is Amreli, a district headquarters in the middle of the Saurashtra peninsula. The number 14 marks the Amreli Regional Transport Office. The state list does not split the district, so every locally registered vehicle in it starts with GJ 14.

One office, one district
Some Gujarat districts, such as Kutch and Surat, are divided between two offices. Amreli is not. The list row simply reads Amreli, covering the entire district, which makes the code easy to place.
Why people look it up
GJ 14 pickups, tractors and trucks travel to the Rajkot and Bhavnagar markets and down to the ports. Drivers who see them far from home often want to know where the plate began.
What GJ 14 city name shows on the RC?
The GJ 14 city name printed on a registration certificate is the registering authority, normally Amreli or RTO Amreli. That field tells you which office issued the record. The owner’s village or town, for example Lathi or Khambha, appears separately in the address lines of the same card.
Digital copies match the card
The smart-card RC, the DigiLocker copy and the mParivahan virtual RC all repeat the same authority name. Older paper books may use a slightly different spelling of the town, but the office is the same.
After a transfer
If the vehicle was later moved to another Gujarat office, the record can name that office while the plate still begins GJ 14. The plate records where the vehicle was first registered.
What area does the Amreli RTO code cover?
The Amreli RTO code covers the whole of Amreli district: about 7,397 sq km of cotton and groundnut country, small towns and a stretch of Arabian Sea coast. The 2011 census counted about 15.1 lakh people in the district, of whom about 1.18 lakh lived in Amreli city itself.

Inland and coastal belts
Babra, Lathi and Lilia sit in the northern and eastern farm belt. The south runs to the coast at Rajula and Jafrabad, where Pipavav, Jafrabad and Victor ports are located.
A Baroda State past
Amreli was once part of the Amreli-Okhamandal division of Baroda State and became part of Gujarat in 1960. That history explains why the town grew as an administrative centre.
Which talukas share GJ 14?
All eleven talukas of Amreli district share GJ 14. If the address proof you give the dealer or the portal names any of them, a new private vehicle is normally registered at Amreli. The table lists them with the main town in each.
| Taluka | Code | Office on the state list |
|---|---|---|
| Amreli | GJ 14 | Amreli |
| Babra | GJ 14 | Amreli |
| Bagasara | GJ 14 | Amreli |
| Dhari | GJ 14 | Amreli |
| Jafrabad | GJ 14 | Amreli |
| Khambha | GJ 14 | Amreli |
| Kunkavav Vadia | GJ 14 | Amreli |
| Lathi | GJ 14 | Amreli |
| Lilia | GJ 14 | Amreli |
| Rajula | GJ 14 | Amreli |
| Savarkundla | GJ 14 | Amreli |
Savarkundla is not separate
Savarkundla is one of the larger towns in the district, and people sometimes expect it to have its own number. The published list shows none, so its vehicles also carry GJ 14.
Smaller towns too
Chalala and Damnagar are census towns inside the district. Owners there follow their taluka, which keeps them on the same code.
Are Pipavav and Rajula vehicles GJ 14?
Yes, if they are registered locally. Port Pipavav lies near Pipavav village, about 15 km south of Rajula and roughly 90 km from Amreli. It is owned by Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd and operated by APM Terminals, and commercial operations began in 2002. Rajula owners register at Amreli and receive GJ 14.
Port fleets can differ
Container trucks and tankers at Pipavav come from across India. Many are registered at a transport firm’s head office, so their plates show that office’s code, not GJ 14.
Jafrabad on the coast
Jafrabad, the neighbouring coastal taluka, is also on the Amreli row. Fishing-town pickups and local taxis there carry the same code.
Which codes surround the Amreli district?
Amreli borders five districts, each with its own office. Rajkot (GJ 03) and Botad (GJ 33) lie to the north, Junagadh (GJ 11) to the west, Bhavnagar (GJ 04) to the east and Gir Somnath (GJ 32, Veraval) to the south. These are the codes you meet most often on Amreli roads.
| Direction | District | Code | Office |
|---|---|---|---|
| North | Rajkot | GJ 03 | Rajkot |
| North | Botad | GJ 33 | Botad |
| West | Junagadh | GJ 11 | Junagadh |
| East | Bhavnagar | GJ 04 | Bhavnagar |
| South | Gir Somnath | GJ 32 | Veraval |
State buses
GSRTC buses on Amreli routes usually show GJ 18, because the RTO list notes that all state transport buses are registered at Gandhinagar.
Codes from elsewhere
For any code outside this belt, our RTO code list covers every Indian state and its offices.
Why is GJ 14 easy to confuse with GJ 04?
Bhavnagar, the eastern neighbour, uses GJ 04, and on a dusty or faded plate the zero and the one can look alike. Both districts share roads, markets and the coast, so both codes appear side by side. Read the digits twice before searching a portal.
Dropped zeros
People often write GJ 04 as “GJ 4”. If that is then mistyped as GJ 14, the search points to the wrong district.
Check the RC instead
When a plate is hard to read, the authority line on the RC settles it: Amreli means GJ 14, Bhavnagar means GJ 04.
Where is the Amreli RTO office?
The office is in Amreli town, the district headquarters. We could not open the Gujarat Commissionerate of Transport’s office directory from our system in October 2026, so we do not print a street address, phone number or opening hours. The office named on your Parivahan or Sarathi appointment slip is the safest guide.
Where to confirm details
Use the office list on the Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat website. Phone numbers on listing sites are often old, and a wasted trip from Jafrabad or Babra can take most of a day.
Under the Gandhinagar Commissionerate
Gujarat’s RTOs work under the Commissionerate in Gandhinagar, but routine registration and licence work happens at the district office.
What work does the Amreli office handle?
The Amreli office handles the usual district tasks: new registration, ownership transfer, address change, adding or removing a loan, duplicate RC, no objection certificates, and permits, fitness and tax for transport vehicles. It also runs learner and driving licence tests for district residents. Most services start online on Vahan or Sarathi.
Farm and goods vehicles
Tractors and goods carriers are common in a farming district. Fitness renewals for transport vehicles need the vehicle at the inspection point.
Licence prefix
A licence from this office begins with GJ14, followed by the year of issue and a serial number, in the same way a plate shows its office.
How do you read a GJ 14 plate?
A GJ 14 plate follows the national pattern: two state letters, two office digits, a series of one to three letters and a number up to 9999. Only GJ 14 points to Amreli. The letters and digits after it are a serial that shows the order of issue.
- Look at the state letters. GJ means the vehicle was first registered in Gujarat.
- Read the two digits. 14 is the Amreli district office.
- Skip the series. Letters such as AK only show when the number was issued.
- Search the whole number. Use Vahan or mParivahan for the official record.

Plate colours
White plates are private, yellow are commercial and green are electric. Yellow GJ 14 plates are common on goods vehicles near the coast.
High-security plates
New vehicles leave the dealer with a high-security registration plate that has a laser-etched number and a chromium hologram.
How do you check a GJ 14 vehicle online?
Type the full number into the Vahan citizen portal or mParivahan. The result shows the registering office, vehicle class, fuel type, registration date and validity, with the owner’s name partly masked. For a used-vehicle purchase, make sure the office reads Amreli and that insurance and fitness are valid.
Match the paperwork
Compare the chassis and engine numbers on the screen with the RC and the vehicle itself before paying anything.
Another office in the record
If the record names Bhavnagar or Rajkot, the vehicle was probably transferred after a move, even though the plate still reads GJ 14.
Does a GJ 14 number change when you move?
Not within Gujarat. A GJ 14 number stays with the vehicle if you move from Amreli to Surat or Ahmedabad; you only update the address on Vahan. A long move to another state normally leads to re-registration there, starting with a clearance from the Amreli office.
After a sale
A buyer in another Gujarat district keeps the GJ 14 number. Only the owner details on the record change.
Why you see GJ 14 in cities
Families who moved for work keep their original plates, which is why GJ 14 cars turn up in Surat and Ahmedabad traffic.
Is MH 14 or HR 14 the same as GJ 14?
No. The state letters decide the place. MH 14 is Pimpri-Chinchwad, HR 14 is Jhajjar, UP 14 is Ghaziabad, KL 14 is Kasaragod and TN 14 is Sholinganallur. Only GJ 14 means Amreli. For the Maharashtra code, see our guide to MH 14 which city.

Typing mistakes
A wrong state letter sends a search to another part of India. Recheck a blurred photo before using any portal.
What a plate does not prove
The code shows where the vehicle was first registered. It does not show where the owner lives today.
