GJ 11 which city, GJ 15 city name and other Gujarat codes explained
GJ 11 which city? It is Junagadh, and the code covers the whole Junagadh district, from Keshod and Mangrol to Visavadar. GJ 15 is Valsad, the southern district that includes Vapi, Pardi and Umbergaon. Veraval left GJ 11 in 2013 and now uses GJ 32. Below you will find the talukas behind each code and over twenty other Gujarat codes.
Key takeaways
- GJ 11 is Junagadh: one office for ten talukas, including Keshod, Manavadar and Visavadar.
- GJ 15 is Valsad: Vapi, Pardi, Umbergaon, Dharampur and Kaprada all share it.
- Veraval, Una and Kodinar moved from Junagadh to Gir Somnath in 2013 and now use GJ 32.
- Surat district has two working codes: GJ 05 for the city side and GJ 19 for Bardoli and the east.
- GJ 28 and GJ 29 are listed as unallocated, reserved for Surat and Vadodara.
- Code lists come from secondary sources, so confirm any specific vehicle on Vahan or mParivahan.

GJ 11 which city is it?
GJ 11 which city has a short answer: Junagadh, the old princely capital at the foot of the Girnar hills. The Junagadh office registers vehicles for the whole district. So a GJ 11 plate can belong to a car from Keshod, a tractor from Vanthali or a scooter from the city’s own streets.

One district, one office
Wikipedia’s RTO list describes GJ-11 as covering the entire Junagadh district. There is no second Junagadh code for rural areas, unlike Ahmedabad or Surat, so the district and the office line up neatly.
Girnar traffic
Junagadh draws pilgrims to Girnar and visitors to the nearby Gir forest. Many of the taxis and jeeps parked near the ropeway carry GJ 11, but you will see plates from every Saurashtra code there too.
GJ 11 city name on an RC and on Vahan
On a registration certificate the GJ 11 city name usually appears as the registering authority, written simply as Junagadh or as “RTO Junagadh”. Vahan shows the same office in its registering authority field. A Junagadh city or village address on the RC should match it.
When the RC says something else
If a GJ 11 vehicle’s RC shows a different office, the record may have been re-registered, or the plate may be wrong. Treat the Vahan entry as the reference and ask the seller to explain the gap.
Gujarati and English spellings
You may see Junagarh or Junagadh in old documents. Both are transliterations of the same name. Neither indicates a separate office.
Which talukas does the Junagadh RTO cover?
The Junagadh RTO covers ten talukas in the taluka list we checked: Junagadh City, Junagadh Rural, Bhesana, Keshod, Malia, Manavadar, Mangrol, Mendarda, Vanthali and Visavadar. Every vehicle registered to an address in these talukas normally gets a GJ 11 number.

| Taluka | Notes | Code |
|---|---|---|
| Junagadh City | District headquarters and office seat | GJ 11 |
| Junagadh Rural | Villages around the city | GJ 11 |
| Keshod | Town with the district’s airport | GJ 11 |
| Mangrol | Coastal taluka, not the Surat Mangrol | GJ 11 |
| Manavadar | Western taluka towards Porbandar | GJ 11 |
| Vanthali | Between Junagadh and Keshod | GJ 11 |
| Visavadar | Eastern taluka on the Gir edge | GJ 11 |
| Bhesana, Malia, Mendarda | Smaller rural talukas | GJ 11 |
Two Mangrols in Gujarat
Junagadh’s Mangrol is a fishing town on the Saurashtra coast. Surat district has its own Mangrol taluka, which registers under GJ 19 Bardoli. The shared name confuses address-based searches more often than you might expect.
Village lists change
Taluka boundaries in Gujarat are redrawn now and then. If your village sits on a district edge, check the office named on the RC rather than relying on the taluka name alone.
What is the GJ 11 RTO code used for?
The GJ 11 RTO code identifies the Junagadh office in every record it creates: new registrations, transfers, address changes, permits and driving licence files. The two digits also form the first part of Junagadh-issued licence numbers, which start with GJ11 followed by the year and a serial.
Registration, licences and permits
Like other Gujarat offices, Junagadh handles vehicle registration, driving licences, permits and fitness checks for its area. Many of these start online on the Parivahan portals and end with a document check or test at the office.
Licence numbers carry the code too
A driving licence issued in Junagadh begins with the state letters and the office number, so it reads GJ11 at the start. That makes the code useful for licences as well as plates.
How did the 2013 Gir Somnath split change GJ 11?
Before August 2013, Junagadh district stretched to the south coast and included Veraval, Una and Kodinar. On 15 August 2013 Gujarat created seven new districts, among them Gir Somnath, carved from Junagadh. The new district got its own office at Veraval and the code GJ 32, so GJ 11 shrank.

What moved out
Gir Somnath took six talukas: Veraval, Talala, Sutrapada, Kodinar, Una and Gir-Gadhada. Vehicles registered there after the new office opened carry GJ 32, not GJ 11.
Old plates stay as they are
A car registered in Veraval in 2010 kept its GJ 11 number. Registration numbers do not change when a district is split. That is why GJ 11 plates are still common around Somnath.
GJ 32 RTO code: why Veraval has its own number
The GJ 32 RTO code belongs to Veraval, headquarters of Gir Somnath district. Codes GJ 31 to GJ 37 were handed to the seven 2013 districts, and Gir Somnath received 32. The office serves the coast from Veraval to Una and the forest taluka of Talala.
Sasan Gir and Somnath
Visitors to the Somnath temple and the Sasan Gir lion sanctuary see many GJ 32 plates on tourist taxis, alongside GJ 11 vehicles from Junagadh about an hour inland.
Diu is not Gujarat
Diu island sits next to Una but is part of a union territory, so its vehicles use that territory’s state letters rather than GJ.
What is the GJ 15 city name?
The GJ 15 city name is Valsad, the district headquarters in the far south of Gujarat. Wikipedia’s RTO list says the Valsad office covers the entire district. So the code applies equally to Vapi’s industrial estates, the beaches at Umbergaon and the hill villages of Dharampur and Kaprada.
Bulsar, the old name
Older records and railway signs used Bulsar, the colonial spelling of Valsad. A pre-1990s document that says Bulsar points to the same office.
Where Valsad sits
The district borders Maharashtra (Nashik and Palghar) and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and wraps around Daman on three sides. Cross-border traffic is part of daily life here.
Which Valsad district towns use GJ 15?
All seven Valsad talukas use GJ 15: Valsad, Vapi, Pardi, Umbergaon, Dharampur, Kaprada and Nana Pondha. The district’s industrial estates at Sarigam, Bhilad, Atul and Pardi add a large number of company trucks, tankers and staff buses to the office’s register.

| Taluka | Area type | Code |
|---|---|---|
| Valsad | Headquarters, coast and Atul | GJ 15 |
| Vapi | Largest city, chemical industry | GJ 15 |
| Pardi | Industrial estates, highway towns | GJ 15 |
| Umbergaon | Southern coast, Sarigam area | GJ 15 |
| Dharampur | Eastern hills | GJ 15 |
| Kaprada | Tribal belt near Nashik | GJ 15 |
| Nana Pondha | Newer taluka in the east | GJ 15 |
Commercial fleets
Many goods vehicles running on the Mumbai to Ahmedabad highway are registered to Vapi or Sarigam firms. A truck with GJ 15 outside Gujarat is often a chemical or pharma supplier.
Nana Pondha
Nana Pondha appears as a separate taluka in current lists. It still falls inside Valsad district, so the code does not change.
Is Vapi registered under GJ 15?
Yes. Vapi is the largest city in Valsad district, but the RTO list we checked shows no separate Vapi code. Cars, bikes and trucks registered to a Vapi address carry GJ 15. Some people expect a separate number because Vapi is so industrial, but the office structure follows the district.
Daman and Silvassa plates nearby
Vapi sits a few kilometres from Daman and Silvassa. Vehicles registered there use the union territory’s letters, not GJ, so you will see a mix of plates on Vapi’s roads.
Vapi vehicles moving out
When a Vapi resident moves to Mumbai, the vehicle keeps GJ 15 at first. A long stay outside Gujarat can later require re-registration with a new state code.
How is GJ 15 different from GJ 21 next door?
GJ 15 is Valsad; GJ 21 is Navsari, the district directly to its north. Both are single-office districts in south Gujarat. Towns like Chikhli and Gandevi sit close to the Valsad border but belong to Navsari, so their vehicles carry GJ 21.
Navsari’s talukas
Navsari district has six talukas: Navsari, Vansda, Chikhli, Gandevi, Jalalpore and Khergam. None of them uses GJ 15.
Further north
Beyond Navsari come Surat (GJ 05 and GJ 19) and Tapi (GJ 26, Vyara). Dang (GJ 30, Ahwa) lies in the hills to the east.
GJ 5 which city?
GJ 5 which city is Surat. Written GJ 05 on plates, the code belongs to the Surat office that covers the city and four western talukas: Olpad, Chorasi, Kamrej and Palsana. It is one of the busiest codes in the state, given Surat’s textile and diamond trades.

Why the leading zero
Plates and Vahan records use two digits, so 5 becomes 05. “GJ 5” and “GJ 05” are the same office.
Surat’s size
Surat city has grown into one of India’s largest, which is why the district needed a second office at Bardoli and has a reserved third number.
Which Surat areas fall under GJ 05?
Under the RTO list, GJ 05 covers Surat city plus Olpad, Chorasi, Kamrej and Palsana talukas, the western half of Surat district. Hazira’s port and industrial belt, Adajan, Varachha and the diamond markets all fall in the city area, so vehicles registered there normally get GJ 05.
| Code | Office | Talukas listed |
|---|---|---|
| GJ 05 | Surat | Surat city, Olpad, Chorasi, Kamrej, Palsana |
| GJ 19 | Bardoli (Surat East) | Bardoli, Mahuva, Mandvi, Mangrol, Ambika, Areth, Umarpada |
| GJ 28 | Not allocated | Reserved for Surat |
Kamrej and Palsana
These two talukas are growing suburbs on the highway. Even though they look rural on a map, they sit with the city office.
Chorasi
Chorasi (also written Choryasi) is the taluka wrapped around the city. Its villages normally follow GJ 05.
GJ 19 which district is it?
GJ 19 is the Bardoli office for eastern Surat district. It covers Bardoli, Mahuva, Mandvi, Mangrol, Ambika, Areth and Umarpada. Bardoli is a sugar and farming town east of Surat city, known for the 1928 satyagraha.
Surat’s Mahuva vs Bhavnagar’s Mahuva
Surat district’s Mahuva uses GJ 19. Bhavnagar district has a much larger Mahuva on the Saurashtra coast, registered under GJ 04. Check the district, not just the town name.
Mandvi again
Kutch also has a Mandvi (GJ 12). The Surat Mandvi is an inland taluka on the Tapi river under GJ 19.
GJ 28 which city: is the code in use?
GJ 28 which city is a common search, but Wikipedia’s RTO list shows GJ 28 as not allocated and reserved for Surat. In the same way, GJ 29 is listed as reserved for Vadodara. If either number appears on a plate, verify the full registration on Vahan before relying on it.
Why reserve a number?
Reserving a code lets the state open a new office for a fast-growing city without renumbering others. We found no official date for when GJ 28 might start.
Fake or mistaken plates
A GJ 28 plate could be a copying error, a decorative plate or a fake. A Vahan search with no result is a warning sign.
GJ 02 which city?
GJ 02 is Mehsana, the north Gujarat district known for dairies, the Becharaji temple and the oil fields around Kadi. The office covers the whole district. So GJ 02 can come from any of ten talukas, from Visnagar to Satlasana.
Mehsana or Mahesana
Official lists sometimes spell it Mahesana. Both point to the same office and the same code.
Next-door codes
Mehsana borders Patan (GJ 24), Banaskantha (GJ 08), Sabarkantha (GJ 09) and Gandhinagar (GJ 18). Plates from all five mix on the Ahmedabad to Palanpur highway.
What is the Mehsana RTO code for each taluka?
The Mehsana RTO code is GJ 02 for every taluka in the district. The list we checked names ten: Mehsana, Becharaji, Jotana, Kadi, Kheralu, Satlasana, Unjha, Vadnagar, Vijapur and Visnagar. None has a separate office code.
Kadi and Becharaji industry
Kadi has cotton and oil industries, and the Becharaji area hosts a large car plant. Company vehicles registered there still get GJ 02.
Unjha and Vadnagar
Unjha is a major spice market, and Vadnagar is a heritage town. Both register under the Mehsana office.
GJ 3 which city?
GJ 3 which city points to Rajkot, Saurashtra’s largest city and an engineering hub. The Rajkot office, written GJ 03, covers the entire district. Morbi used to be part of Rajkot district but became separate in 2013 with its own code, GJ 36.
GJ 3 or GJ 03
The digit is always written with a leading zero on plates. GJ 3 and GJ 03 are the same.
Morbi’s move
Morbi district was formed from parts of Rajkot and Surendranagar. Tile-industry trucks from Morbi now carry GJ 36, although older ones may show GJ 03.
GJ03 city name: which Rajkot towns share it?
The GJ03 city name is Rajkot, but the code covers eleven talukas: Rajkot, Dhoraji, Gondal, Jamkandorna, Jasdan, Jetpur, Kotada Sangani, Lodhika, Paddhari, Upleta and Vinchchiya. Gondal and Jetpur are the largest towns after Rajkot itself.
Jetpur and Dhoraji
Jetpur is known for textile printing and Dhoraji for trade. Both are close to Junagadh, so GJ 03 and GJ 11 plates mix on the road between them.
Lodhika and Paddhari
These talukas lie close to Rajkot city and include fast-growing industrial areas around the outskirts.
GJ 4 which city?
GJ 4 which city means Bhavnagar, the coastal district on the Gulf of Khambhat. The Bhavnagar office covers the whole district, including Alang’s ship-breaking yard and the temple town of Palitana. Botad, carved partly from Bhavnagar in 2013, now uses GJ 33.
Ten talukas
The district’s talukas are Bhavnagar, Gariadhar, Ghogha, Jesar, Mahuva, Palitana, Sihor, Talaja, Umrala and Vallabhipur.
Botad split
Botad district took areas from both Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar. New registrations there carry GJ 33.
GJ4 city name or GJ04 city name: same office?
Yes. GJ4 city name and GJ04 city name searches lead to the same office: Bhavnagar. The code is stored as two digits, so official records always show GJ04 or GJ-04. Typing GJ4 in a search box is just a short form, not a different registration area.
Spaces and hyphens
You will see GJ 04, GJ-04 and GJ04 in different places. Vahan searches normally ignore the spaces, but type the full number without gaps to be safe.
Not GJ 14
GJ 14 is Amreli, the next district west. A dropped zero can turn GJ 04 into a misread GJ 14, so check the plate carefully.
GJ06 city name and Vadodara district
The GJ06 city name is Vadodara, the central Gujarat city once called Baroda. The office covers the entire Vadodara district, including Padra, Karjan, Dabhoi, Savli, Sinor, Waghodia and Desar talukas. For a longer guide to the office, see our page on GJ 06 which city.
Chhota Udaipur left in 2013
The eastern tribal belt became Chhota Udaipur district in 2013 and now uses GJ 34, so new registrations from Bodeli or Kavant no longer get GJ 06.
Baroda on old papers
Older RCs may say Baroda. It is the same office.
What is the Vadodara GJ code?
The Vadodara GJ code is GJ 06. It is the only working code for the district in the list we checked; GJ 29 is listed as reserved for Vadodara but not allocated. Vehicles registered in Alkapuri, Makarpura, Padra or Savli all carry GJ 06.
Industrial areas
Vadodara’s refinery and chemical belt and the Makarpura and Savli estates register company vehicles under GJ 06.
GJ 29 if it ever opens
If a second Vadodara office starts, GJ 29 is the number set aside. Until then, treat a GJ 29 plate as one to verify.
GJ 06 passing: what the plate tells you
GJ 06 passing is everyday speech for a vehicle “passed”, or registered, at the Vadodara office. It tells you where the vehicle was first registered or later re-registered, not where the owner lives now. A GJ 06 car in Surat may belong to a family that moved years ago.
Passing means registration
In Gujarat and Maharashtra, “passing” is the common word for registration. “Vadodara passing” and “GJ 06 passing” mean the same thing.
Transfer keeps the number
When a GJ 06 car is sold within Gujarat, the plate stays the same. Only the owner’s details change on the record.
GJ6 city name: why the zero is dropped
GJ6 city name searches also point to Vadodara. People drop the zero when typing, but plates and records always show two digits. The same applies to GJ 2, GJ 3, GJ 4, GJ 5 and GJ 9, which are Mehsana, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Surat and Himmatnagar.
Quick zero table
GJ 1 is Ahmedabad West, GJ 7 is Nadiad (Kheda) and GJ 8 is Palanpur (Banaskantha). Add the zero and you have the official code.
Voice search mix-ups
Spoken searches like “GJ six” sometimes return “GJ 16”. GJ 16 is Bharuch, a different district.
GJ06 RTO: which services the office handles
The GJ06 RTO in Vadodara handles the same core services as any Gujarat office: new registration, ownership transfer, address change, hypothecation entries, permits, fitness for commercial vehicles and driving licences. Most applications start online and need an office visit only for tests, inspections or document checks.
Old vehicle renewals
Private vehicles need a fresh registration after their validity ends. For current central fees, see our guide to RC renewal after 15 years fees.
Office address
We do not publish the office address or timings, because we could not verify them. Check the Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat site for current details.
GJ 22 which city?
GJ 22 is Rajpipla, headquarters of Narmada district. The office covers the whole district, including Dediapada, Garudeshwar, Nandod, Sagbara and Tilakwada talukas. Kevadia and the Statue of Unity are in this district, so tourist buses with GJ 22 are common there.
Rajpipla and Nandod
Rajpipla town sits in Nandod taluka. Documents may name either.
Neighbouring codes
Narmada touches Bharuch (GJ 16), Vadodara (GJ 06), Chhota Udaipur (GJ 34) and Surat East (GJ 19).
GJ 09 which city?
GJ 09 is Himmatnagar, headquarters of Sabarkantha district in north-east Gujarat. The office covers the entire district. Aravalli district, created from Sabarkantha in 2013, now has its own code, GJ 31 Modasa. Our page on GJ 9 which city covers the office in more depth.
Himatnagar spelling
Lists use both Himmatnagar and Himatnagar. They are the same town.
On the Rajasthan road
Himmatnagar is on the highway to Udaipur, so GJ 09 plates are common at the Shamlaji border.
GJ09 city name: Sabarkantha towns
The GJ09 city name is Himmatnagar, and the code covers eight talukas: Himatnagar, Idar, Khedbrahma, Poshina, Prantij, Talod, Vadali and Vijaynagar. Idar and Prantij are the largest towns after Himmatnagar.
Idar and Khedbrahma
Idar is known for its hill fort and Khedbrahma for its temple. Both use GJ 09.
Older Modasa plates
Vehicles registered in Modasa before Aravalli split off may still carry GJ 09.
GJ 13 city name: Surendranagar
The GJ 13 city name is Surendranagar, the district on the edge of the Little Rann of Kutch. The office covers the whole district, whose ten talukas are Chotila, Chuda, Dasada, Dhrangadhra, Lakhtar, Limbdi, Muli, Sayla, Thangadh and Wadhwan. The office is in the Surendranagar-Wadhwan twin town.
Dhrangadhra and Chotila
Dhrangadhra has chemical works and Chotila a hilltop temple on the Rajkot highway. Both use GJ 13.
Morbi’s share
Parts of Surendranagar went to Morbi district in 2013. Those areas now register under GJ 36.
GJ 17 city name: Godhra
The GJ 17 city name is Godhra, headquarters of Panchmahal district in east Gujarat. The office covers the entire district, whose seven talukas are Ghoghamba, Godhra, Halol, Jambughoda, Kalol, Morwa Hadaf and Shehera.
Halol’s industry
Halol has a large industrial estate and automobile units, so many factory and logistics vehicles here carry GJ 17.
Pavagadh
The Pavagadh hill temple and Champaner heritage site are in Halol taluka, in GJ 17’s area.
What does the GJ 17 RTO code cover?
The GJ 17 RTO code covers the whole of Panchmahal district. Before 2013, the district was larger: Mahisagar district was carved partly from Panchmahal and given GJ 35 at Lunawada. So towns such as Lunawada and Santrampur no longer receive GJ 17 numbers.
Kalol in two districts
Panchmahal’s Kalol is not the Kalol in Gandhinagar district (GJ 18). Same name, different office.
Older plates
Vehicles registered in Lunawada before the split may still show GJ 17.
Godhra RTO code and nearby offices
The Godhra RTO code is GJ 17. Around it sit Dahod (GJ 20) to the east, Mahisagar (GJ 35) to the north, Vadodara (GJ 06) to the south-west and Kheda (GJ 07) to the west. Chhota Udaipur (GJ 34) lies to the south-east.
| Code | Office | District |
|---|---|---|
| GJ 17 | Godhra | Panchmahal |
| GJ 20 | Dahod | Dahod |
| GJ 35 | Lunawada | Mahisagar |
| GJ 34 | Chhota Udaipur | Chhota Udaipur |
| GJ 06 | Vadodara | Vadodara |
| GJ 22 | Rajpipla | Narmada |
Eastern belt
Panchmahal, Dahod, Mahisagar and Chhota Udaipur form Gujarat’s eastern tribal belt. Each has its own code.
Same highway, many codes
On the Vadodara to Dahod road you can see five of these codes within an hour.
GJ 20 city name: Dahod
The GJ 20 city name is Dahod, the district on the Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan border. The office covers the whole district, including Dahod, Devgadh Baria, Dhanpur, Fatepura, Garbada, Limkheda, Sanjeli, Jhalod, Singvad, Sukhsar and Guru Govind Limdi talukas.
Border district
Dahod is a gateway to Madhya Pradesh, so GJ 20 and MP plates share the roads every day.
Railway town
Dahod is also known for its railway workshop. Staff vehicles there carry GJ 20 like everyone else.
GJ12 RTO name: Bhuj
The GJ12 RTO name is Bhuj, recorded as Kutch West. It covers Bhuj, Mundra, Mandvi, Nakhatrana, Abdasa and Lakhpat. East Kutch, including Gandhidham, uses GJ 39 Anjar. For a full guide to the office, read our page on GJ 12 which city.
Mundra port vehicles
Mundra’s port brings heavy truck traffic, much of it registered under GJ 12.
Rann of Kutch visitors
Tourist cars heading to Dhordo and the white Rann usually start from Bhuj, which is why rental cars there often carry GJ 12.
GJ 16 passing: Bharuch
GJ 16 passing means a vehicle registered at Bharuch, the office for the whole Bharuch district, including the Ankleshwar and Dahej industrial areas. Our page on GJ 16 which city covers the office and its talukas.
Bharuch’s talukas
The district has nine: Bharuch, Amod, Ankleshwar, Hansot, Jambusar, Jhagadia, Netrang, Vagra and Valia.
Ankleshwar fleets
Chemical tankers from Ankleshwar are a common sight on the national highway with GJ 16 plates.
GJ 24 passing: Patan
GJ 24 passing refers to Patan, the north Gujarat district famous for the Rani ki Vav stepwell and Patola silk. The office covers the whole district: Patan, Chanasma, Harij, Radhanpur, Sami, Sankheswar, Santalpur, Sarasvati and Sidhpur talukas.
Sidhpur and Radhanpur
Sidhpur is a pilgrimage town near Mehsana, and Radhanpur lies towards the Little Rann. Both use GJ 24.
Neighbours
Patan borders Mehsana (GJ 02), Banaskantha (GJ 08) and the Kutch region.
GJ 31 RTO code: Modasa
The GJ 31 RTO code is Modasa, headquarters of Aravalli district, one of the seven districts formed in 2013 from Sabarkantha. Its eight talukas are Bayad, Bhiloda, Dhansura, Malpur, Meghraj, Modasa, Shamlaji and Sathamba.
Shamlaji border
The Shamlaji temple sits near the Rajasthan border on the Udaipur highway, so GJ 31 plates are common at the check point.
Lowest of the 2013 codes
GJ 31 is the first number in the GJ 31 to GJ 37 run given to the new 2013 districts.
GJ 34 RTO code: Chhota Udaipur
The GJ 34 RTO code belongs to Chhota Udaipur, a district formed from Vadodara in 2013. It covers Chhota Udaipur, Bodeli, Jetpur Pavi, Kavant, Nasvadi, Sankheda and Kadwal talukas. See our page on GJ 34 which city for the full office guide.
Bodeli
Bodeli is the main commercial town and many registrations come from there.
Sankheda furniture
Sankheda’s lacquered furniture trade sends small goods vehicles across Gujarat with GJ 34 plates.
How do you decode a GJ plate step by step?
Decoding a Gujarat plate takes five quick steps. The first four characters, such as GJ 15, tell you the state and office. The series letters and number that follow are a running sequence with no place meaning. Finish by checking the full number online, because a plate alone can be copied.

- Read GJ. The first two letters show the vehicle was registered in Gujarat.
- Read the digits. The next two digits, such as 11 or 15, name the registering office.
- Ignore the series. The letters and four-digit number that follow are a running sequence with no place meaning.
- Match the office. Use the tables here to find the district and talukas behind the code.
- Verify online. Search the complete number on Vahan or mParivahan to see the official registering authority.
Try the decoder
Series letters
Series letters skip I and O so they are not mistaken for 1 and 0. When one series runs out, the office moves to the next.
Which Gujarat codes cover which region?
Gujarat is often described in four broad regions. The table below groups the codes on this page that way. The regions are informal, but they help when you see a plate and want a rough idea of where the vehicle is from.

| Region | Codes on this page | Main towns |
|---|---|---|
| South Gujarat | GJ 05, GJ 15, GJ 16, GJ 19, GJ 21, GJ 22 | Surat, Valsad, Bharuch, Bardoli, Navsari, Rajpipla |
| Saurashtra | GJ 03, GJ 04, GJ 11, GJ 13, GJ 32 | Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Junagadh, Surendranagar, Veraval |
| North Gujarat | GJ 02, GJ 09, GJ 24, GJ 31 | Mehsana, Himmatnagar, Patan, Modasa |
| Central and east | GJ 06, GJ 17, GJ 20, GJ 34 | Vadodara, Godhra, Dahod, Chhota Udaipur |
| Kutch | GJ 12 | Bhuj |
The full list
For Ahmedabad’s three codes and the complete GJ 01 to GJ 40 list, see our page on GJ 38 which city. Codes for every state start from our RTO codes and offices hub.
Why counts differ
Gujarat has more districts than some offices, and some districts have more than one office. A code count and a district count rarely match.
How do you confirm a GJ number online?
To confirm a GJ number, search the full registration number on the Vahan citizen portal or the mParivahan app. The result shows the registering authority, vehicle class, fuel, registration date and validity, with the owner’s name partly masked. That record is more reliable than any code list.
What the result shows
For how the lookup works and what each field means, read our guide to RTO vehicle information.
Application status
If you have applied for a new RC in Gujarat and want to track it, our page on RC book status in Gujarat explains the steps.
Does a GJ code change when the owner moves?
No, not inside Gujarat. A vehicle keeps its registration number for life within the state. If a Junagadh owner moves to Valsad, the RC address is updated, but the plate still reads GJ 11. The code shows the office of registration, not the current address.

Moving to another state
If the vehicle is kept in another state for a long period, the owner may need to register it there, and the GJ number will then change. Check the rules of the new state before you move.
BH series
Bharat series plates carry BH instead of a state code, so they tell you nothing about the Gujarat office.
What should you check before buying a used GJ 11 or GJ 15 vehicle?
Before buying any used GJ 11 or GJ 15 vehicle, check that the plate, the RC and the Vahan record agree on the office, chassis number and engine number. Then confirm there is no active loan, valid insurance and PUC are in place, and no challans are pending.

Paperwork for transfer
The transfer is handled by the office for the buyer’s address. Our guide to vehicle ownership transfer online explains Form 29 and Form 30.
Office addresses
