GJ 18 which city: Gandhinagar's RTO code and office explained

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 14 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

GJ 18 which city? The code belongs to Gandhinagar, Gujarat's capital. One RTO in Gandhinagar registers vehicles from the whole district: Gandhinagar, Kalol, Dehgam and Mansa talukas, including GIFT City and Adalaj. The published RTO list also notes that all GSRTC buses are registered there, which is why GJ 18 buses run in every corner of Gujarat.

Key takeaways

  • GJ 18 is Gandhinagar, and the single office covers the entire Gandhinagar district.
  • Kalol, Dehgam (Dahegam) and Mansa talukas all carry GJ 18, as does GIFT City.
  • State buses of GSRTC are listed as registered under GJ 18, so a GJ 18 bus can be from anywhere.
  • Ahmedabad uses GJ 01, GJ 27 and GJ 38, not GJ 18, even though the cities are about 23 km apart.
  • We could not verify the office's street address or phone, so confirm them on the Gujarat transport site.

GJ 18 which city does the code belong to?

The short answer to GJ 18 which city is Gandhinagar, the planned capital of Gujarat. The digits 18 identify the Gandhinagar Regional Transport Office, and the RTO district list says that office covers the entire Gandhinagar district. So a GJ 18 plate began life in the capital or one of its three neighbouring taluka towns.

One capital-district code, ringed by five busier offices on every side.

One code, one office

Many Gujarat districts now have two or three codes. Gandhinagar still has only one, so there is no need to work out which part of the district a GJ 18 vehicle came from. It is simply a Gandhinagar district registration.

Why the question comes up so often

GJ 18 shows up far from the capital. You will see it on state transport buses in Kutch, on official cars in Surat and on commuter cars in Ahmedabad every morning. That spread makes people wonder whether the code really belongs to one city.

What GJ 18 city name appears on an RC?

The GJ 18 city name printed on a registration certificate is the registering authority, normally shown as Gandhinagar or an RTO Gandhinagar label. It names the office that issued the number, not the owner’s neighbourhood. The owner’s own address appears in a separate field on the same card.

Registering authority versus owner address

A buyer living in Kalol still sees Gandhinagar as the authority, because Kalol has no separate office. The owner address line, by contrast, will say Kalol.

Which talukas share the GJ 18 RTO code?

All four talukas of the district share the GJ 18 RTO code: Gandhinagar, Kalol, Dehgam and Mansa. The district covers about 2,140 sq km, small by Gujarat standards, which helps explain why a single office has been enough. Every town and village inside those talukas registers at the same counter.

Gandhinagar taluka

This is the capital itself, laid out in numbered sectors, with the railway station in Sector 14. Government colonies, office parks and newer suburbs all fall inside it.

The three outer talukas

Kalol, Dehgam and Mansa are older market towns that predate the capital. Their buyers make the trip to Gandhinagar, or more often let the dealer handle registration.

Is Kalol a GJ 18 town?

Yes, Kalol in Gandhinagar district is a GJ 18 town; its Wikipedia infobox lists GJ-18 as the registration code. It lies on State Highway 41 between Ahmedabad and Mehsana and had about 1.34 lakh residents in 2011. Be careful, though: Gujarat has a second Kalol in Panchmahal.

The other Kalol

Kalol in Panchmahal district belongs to the Godhra office, GJ 17. Two towns, one name, two codes. The district on the RC settles which one you are dealing with.

An industrial town

IFFCO set up its first ammonia-urea complex at Kalol in 1974, and plastics and textile units line the Chhatral side. Goods vehicles from these works also carry GJ 18.

Does Dehgam register under GJ 18?

Dehgam, spelt Dahegam in census records, registers under GJ 18. It is a municipality on the eastern side of Gandhinagar district, towards the Sabarkantha and Kheda borders. Owners there use the Gandhinagar office for registration, transfers and licences, because the district has no sub-office of its own on the published list.

Two spellings, one town

Search portals and forms may show either Dehgam or Dahegam. Both mean the same taluka, so pick whichever spelling the dropdown offers.

Close to other codes

Dehgam’s east side faces Sabarkantha (GJ 09) and Kheda (GJ 07). Plates from all three districts mix on the roads around it.

Is Mansa covered by the Gandhinagar office?

Yes. Mansa is the northern taluka of Gandhinagar district, and its town infobox lists GJ 18. It sits towards the Mehsana border, so a Mansa resident may live nearer to Mehsana’s GJ 02 office, but the district boundary, not distance, decides where the vehicle is registered.

Mahudi and nearby villages

The district article lists Mahudi among its towns. Visitors’ cars there carry many codes, but vehicles registered by local residents will be GJ 18.

Does GIFT City get GJ 18 plates?

GIFT City, India’s first International Financial Services Centre, sits in Gandhinagar district on the Sabarmati, about 12 km from Ahmedabad airport. A vehicle registered to a GIFT City address therefore normally gets GJ 18. Company cars of firms based there may carry other codes if they were registered at a head office elsewhere.

Office address versus home address

An employee who works in GIFT City but lives in Ahmedabad will usually get an Ahmedabad code. Registration follows where the owner lives, not where they work.

Which villages and suburbs fall under GJ 18?

Beyond the four taluka towns, the district article names Adalaj, Chhatral, Chiloda, Mahudi, Punadra and Saij among its towns and suburbs. All of them are inside Gandhinagar district, so locally registered vehicles there carry GJ 18. Adalaj, home to the famous stepwell, sits right on the Ahmedabad edge.

Key figures for the district served by the GJ18 RTO in Gandhinagar, Gujarat
A small district by area, which is why one office can register all of it.

Fringe areas near Ahmedabad

The two cities have grown into each other along the Sabarmati. The district article mentions Motera as a Gandhinagar suburb, but much of Motera falls inside Ahmedabad city, so treat edge areas case by case.

How to settle a doubt

Look at the district printed on your Aadhaar or electricity bill. If it says Gandhinagar, expect GJ 18; if it says Ahmedabad, expect GJ 01, GJ 27 or GJ 38.

What is the Gandhinagar RTO code?

The Gandhinagar RTO code is GJ 18: the state letters GJ followed by the office number 18. It is the only code listed for the district. People also call it the GJ18 RTO or Gandhinagar passing, where “passing” is the everyday word for registration in Gujarati and Hindi.

Same thing, different words

“GJ 18 RTO code”, “Gandhinagar passing” and “Gandhinagar RTO number” usually all mean the two digits after GJ. Some people mean the office phone number instead, covered further down.

Where the number came from

The published RTO list gives the office and its area but not the year Gandhinagar received 18, so we do not guess one. Older codes such as GJ 01 to GJ 20 are mostly long-established districts.

Why does all of Gandhinagar district share one code?

The district is compact, with a population of about 13.9 lakh in 2011 and only four talukas, so one office has been able to serve it. Ahmedabad, by contrast, needed three codes for city and rural areas. Gandhinagar district was organised in 1964, a few years after Gujarat itself was formed.

Compared with neighbours

Kutch, Surat and Banaskantha were split into two codes each as traffic grew. Gandhinagar has not been split on the current list, though that could change in future.

Why do GSRTC buses carry GJ 18?

The RTO district list adds a note to the GJ 18 row: all GSRTC buses are registered here. GSRTC, the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation, was set up on 1 May 1960 and runs a statewide network with 16 divisions and about 126 depots. Registering the fleet at one office keeps its records together.

What it means on the road

A GJ 18 bus in Bhuj, Valsad or Udaipur is not a Gandhinagar bus. It is a state transport bus that could be based at any depot in Gujarat.

Headquarters is in Ahmedabad

GSRTC’s central office is at Ranip, Ahmedabad, not Gandhinagar. The registration choice is administrative and does not reflect where the buses are run from.

Is GJ 18 an Ahmedabad code?

No. GJ 18 is not an Ahmedabad code, even though GJ 18 cars fill Ahmedabad roads. Ahmedabad city uses GJ 01 for the west bank and GJ 27 for the east, and its rural talukas use GJ 38. The confusion comes from the twin-city commute and the GSRTC buses.

Why the mix-up is natural

Gandhinagar is only about 23 km north of Ahmedabad, and thousands of people drive between them every day. A GJ 18 car in an Ahmedabad parking lot looks local.

For Subhash Bridge, Vastral and Bavla, see our guide to RTO Ahmedabad, which covers the city’s codes and offices.

How does GJ 18 differ from GJ 01 and GJ 27?

The difference is the office and the area. GJ 18 covers a whole district from one office; GJ 01 and GJ 27 each cover one half of Ahmedabad city plus parts of Daskroi taluka. Rules, fees and online services are the same because the state sets them.

Comparison of the GJ 18 city name Gandhinagar with Ahmedabad codes GJ 01 and GJ 27
Twenty-odd kilometres apart, but the address on your proof decides the code.

Volume and waiting

Ahmedabad’s offices handle far more vehicles, so appointment slots there can fill faster. Gandhinagar residents use their own office and cannot choose an Ahmedabad one.

The rural Ahmedabad code

Sanand, Bavla and Dholera use a separate rural code. Our page on GJ 38 which city explains that office and its talukas.

Where is the Gandhinagar RTO office?

The Gandhinagar RTO office is in Gandhinagar city, the district headquarters. We could not open the Gujarat Commissionerate of Transport’s office list from our system, and the private listings we tried were blocked, so we do not print a street address. The office shown on your Parivahan appointment slip is the reliable guide.

Not the same as the Commissionerate

The state’s Commissionerate of Transport is also based in Gandhinagar. It supervises every RTO in Gujarat but is not where you take routine registration or licence work.

Confirm before you travel

Pick Gandhinagar in the office list when you book a slot on Parivahan or Sarathi. The slip names the office and the time to attend.

How do you find the Gandhinagar RTO office address and phone?

Use the office directory on the Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat website, or the RTO details shown when you book an appointment on Parivahan. Avoid copying phone numbers from random listing sites; numbers and addresses change, and we could not confirm any from an official page in October 2026.

Which services does the GJ18 RTO handle?

The GJ18 RTO offers the standard services of a Gujarat office: new registration, transfer of ownership, change of address, hypothecation entries and removal, duplicate RC, no objection certificates, permits and fitness for transport vehicles. Most begin online on the Vahan portal and finish with an upload, a visit or a faceless approval.

Checklist of things to do before visiting the Gandhinagar RTO office in person
Most work starts online, so a visit is the last step, not the first.

Dealer-point registration

Most new private cars and two-wheelers are registered by the dealer, so a Gandhinagar buyer rarely visits the office for a new number.

Leaving the state

If you move outside Gujarat for good, the office issues a no objection certificate before the vehicle is re-registered elsewhere. See our guide to the no objection certificate for the documents.

Can you get a driving licence at the Gandhinagar office?

Yes. The Gandhinagar RTO handles learner and permanent driving licences for residents of the district, through the Sarathi portal. You apply online, upload documents, pay the state fee and book a slot. The practical driving test is then taken at the office or its test track on the booked date.

Licence numbers carry the code too

A Gujarat licence issued here starts with GJ18, followed by the year and a serial. It tells you the issuing office, the same way a plate does.

Renewals and corrections

Renewals, address changes and duplicates also start on Sarathi. Some can be completed without a visit if Aadhaar authentication works.

How do you read a GJ 18 number plate?

A GJ 18 plate follows the national pattern: state letters, office digits, one to three series letters and a number up to 9999. Only the first four characters tell you where it was registered. The series simply shows the order in which numbers were issued, and the letters I and O are not used.

  1. Read the state letters. GJ means the vehicle was first registered in Gujarat.
  2. Read the office digits. 18 points to the Gandhinagar RTO.
  3. Skip the series letters. Letters such as AB or KM only show the order of issue.
  4. Check the record. Enter the full number on Vahan or mParivahan for the official details.

Only the first four characters point to a place; the rest is a serial.

High-security plates

New vehicles get a high-security registration plate fitted through the dealer, with the GJ 18 code and number laser-branded on the plate.

What the plate leaves out

A plate does not reveal the owner, the insurance status or any loan. Those details live in the Vahan record, with the owner’s name partly masked.

Which RTO codes border Gandhinagar district?

Gandhinagar district touches five districts and six codes. Sabarkantha and Aravalli lie to the north-east, Kheda to the south-east, Ahmedabad to the south-west and Mehsana to the north-west. Plates from all of them are common inside the district, especially on the highways to Mehsana and Himmatnagar.

The Ahmedabad side

The south-west border is the busiest, with GJ 01 and GJ 27 traffic coming up from the city. GJ 38 appears less often here, as Bavla and Sanand lie further west.

The northern side

Mansa and Kalol face Mehsana’s GJ 02, while Dehgam faces GJ 09 and GJ 31 to the north-east.

How do you check a GJ 18 vehicle online?

To check a GJ 18 vehicle, enter the full number on the Vahan citizen portal or the mParivahan app. The result shows the registering office, vehicle class, fuel type, registration date and validity, with the owner’s name partly hidden. Compare these with the paper or digital RC before relying on them.

What to confirm

Check that the office reads Gandhinagar, that the chassis and engine numbers match the RC, and that fitness, insurance and PUC are current.

A different office in the record

If the record shows another office, the vehicle has probably been transferred after a move. The plate may still show GJ 18.

Can you keep a GJ 18 number after moving?

Within Gujarat, yes. A GJ 18 number stays with the vehicle if you move to Rajkot or Surat; you update the address on Vahan rather than take a new plate. A move to another state for more than a year normally needs re-registration there, which starts with a clearance from the Gandhinagar office.

Selling a GJ 18 vehicle

The buyer keeps the number after the transfer of ownership, even if they live in another Gujarat district. The record may move to the buyer’s local office.

What should you check before buying a used GJ 18 car?

A used GJ 18 car needs the same checks as any other: a clean Vahan record, matching chassis and engine numbers, no unpaid challans, and no open loan, or a bank clearance if there was one. Because the capital hosts many offices and the GSRTC fleet is listed here, also confirm whether it was ever a commercial or official vehicle.

Former fleet or official vehicles

Check the vehicle class in the record. A car once registered as a taxi or under an organisation has a different history from a private car.

Hypothecation entries

If the RC shows a bank, ask for the loan closure letter and Form 35 before you pay. The hypothecation must be removed at the Gandhinagar office.

How do you get a choice number at Gandhinagar?

When a new series opens, the Gandhinagar office offers choice or fancy numbers through the state’s e-auction on the Vahan fancy number module. You register, bid for the number you want and, if you win, pay before the deadline. Base prices are set by the Gujarat government, not by the office.

Prices and categories

Prices vary by how popular a number is, such as 0001 or 9999. See our guide to VIP number plate price for how the categories work.

Is RJ 18 the same as GJ 18?

No. RJ 18 is Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan’s Shekhawati region, in a different state altogether. Only the office digits match. The state letters always come first and decide the state, so RJ 18 and GJ 18 have nothing in common beyond the number.

Why people search them together

Search engines show similar codes side by side, and a typo can turn GJ into RJ. For the Rajasthan office, see our page on RJ 18 which city.

Which mistakes do people make with GJ 18 plates?

Most mistakes come from treating GJ 18 as an Ahmedabad code, assuming every GJ 18 bus is based in Gandhinagar, or mixing up the two Kalols. Another common slip is reading RJ 18 as a Gujarat code. The card below lists each mix-up and the quick fix.

Common GJ 18 plate mistakes with fixes for Gandhinagar, Kalol, GSRTC and RJ 18
A code shows where the vehicle was first registered, nothing more.

Trusting old lists

Code lists online can lag behind changes such as new districts. Gujarat added Vav-Tharad in 2025 with its own code, so recheck any list older than a year.

Reading too much into the code

A code tells you where a vehicle was first registered. It does not prove where the owner lives today or who owns it now.

Which Gujarat codes are searched alongside GJ 18?

People who look up GJ 18 often check nearby and lookalike codes too: GJ 06 Vadodara, GJ 09 Himmatnagar, GJ 12 Bhuj, GJ 14 Amreli, GJ 16 Bharuch and GJ 37 Khambhaliya in Devbhoomi Dwarka. Each has its own district and office. Our RTO codes hub links every Gujarat and national code page.

When a code is missing

GJ 28 and GJ 29 are listed as reserved and not allotted, so you should not see them on a genuine Gujarat plate.
