MH 11 which city: the Satara RTO code and the talukas it covers

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 14 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

MH 11 which city? The answer is Satara. MH 11 is the code of the Satara Regional Transport Office at Camp, Satara, which registers vehicles from the district headquarters and most surrounding talukas, including Wai, Koregaon, Khatav and Mahabaleshwar. Karad and Patan use MH 50, and Phaltan and Man use MH 53, even though they sit in the same district.

Key takeaways

  • MH 11 is Satara: the district RTO at Camp, Satara, in western Maharashtra.
  • Satara district has three registering offices: MH 11 Satara, MH 50 Karad and MH 53 Phaltan.
  • Karad and Patan vehicles show MH 50; Phaltan and Man vehicles show MH 53.
  • Hill-station towns such as Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani fall in talukas that are left with MH 11.
  • The street address and phone number come from one private listing, so confirm them on the state transport site.
  • A plate only shows where a vehicle was first registered; the Vahan record is the official source.

MH 11 which city does the code belong to?

The short answer to MH 11 which city is Satara, the headquarters town of Satara district in western Maharashtra. The code belongs to the Satara Regional Transport Office in the Camp area of the city. Any car, bike, tractor or truck first registered there carries MH 11 before its series letters and number.

Satara district runs three registering offices; the other three codes belong to bordering districts.

Satara city and the district are not quite the same thing

The MH 11 office serves the city and a set of surrounding talukas. It does not serve every corner of the district, because two sub-offices take over the southern and eastern talukas. That detail explains most of the confusion people have with Satara plates.

Why the code shows up far from Satara

Satara sits on NH 48, one of the busiest highways in the state, and many families from the district work in Pune and Mumbai. So MH 11 plates are a common sight well outside the district, often on vehicles that have not been re-registered since the owner moved.

Which talukas register vehicles under MH 11?

Satara district has 11 talukas. The Karad office takes Karad and Patan, and the Phaltan office takes Phaltan and Man. That leaves seven talukas for the MH 11 office: Satara, Jaoli, Koregaon, Wai, Mahabaleshwar, Khandala and Khatav. Our list is worked out from the published office areas, not from a single taluka-by-taluka notice.

How we arrived at the seven talukas

The Wikipedia RTO list gives the sub-office areas, and the Satara district page lists all 11 talukas. Subtracting the four sub-office talukas leaves seven. We have logged this as a derived fact, so if you live near a taluka boundary, ask the office directly.

Towns you will find in these talukas

The district page names towns such as Medha (Jaoli), Rahimatpur and Koregaon, Vaduj (Khatav), Lonand (Khandala), Wai, Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar. Owners in these towns would normally register at Camp, Satara.

Is Wai, Koregaon or Khatav under MH 11?

Yes, on the published office areas, Wai, Koregaon and Khatav are all MH 11 talukas. None of them appears in the Karad or Phaltan sub-office lists. A new two-wheeler bought in Wai or a tractor registered in Vaduj should therefore receive an MH 11 number, unless the state has changed the boundary since our check.

Key figures for Satara district: eleven talukas, three RTO offices and 2011 population
Three offices share eleven talukas, which is why one district shows three codes.

Khandala and Lonand on the Pune side

Khandala taluka in Satara (not the Khandala ghat near Lonavala in Pune district) lies on the northern edge of the district. Lonand, its main town, is a short drive from the Pune border, yet it still falls outside the Pune offices.

Jaoli and Medha in the hills

Jaoli taluka, with Medha as its main town, runs into the Sahyadri hills west of Satara city. It has no sub-office of its own, so its vehicles also use MH 11.

Are Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani vehicles MH 11?

Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani are hill-station towns in Mahabaleshwar and Wai talukas, and neither taluka is listed under a sub-office. Vehicles registered there should carry MH 11. Many cars on their roads are tourist vehicles from Pune and Mumbai, so most plates you see in the hills will not be MH 11 at all.

Taxis and tourist vehicles

A taxi or tourist vehicle registered by a Mahabaleshwar operator would usually be registered at the Satara office. Permits and fitness for transport vehicles are handled by the registering office too, so these owners deal with Camp, Satara rather than Karad.

Do not read hotel or taxi branding as proof

A vehicle with Mahabaleshwar branding may still be registered elsewhere. The plate code tells you the office; the Vahan record tells you the rest.

Which Satara district towns are not MH 11?

Four talukas inside Satara district do not use MH 11. Karad and Patan belong to the MH 50 Karad office at Supane, and Phaltan and Man belong to the MH 53 Phaltan office on Shinganpur Road. Big towns such as Karad, Malkapur, Umbraj, Koynanagar, Phaltan, Dahiwadi and Mhaswad therefore show other codes.

Karad and Patan under MH 50

Karad is the district’s second major town and a busy trading centre on the highway. Patan taluka, which includes the Koyna dam area and Koynanagar, shares the Karad sub-office.

Phaltan and Man under MH 53

Phaltan lies in the north-east towards Baramati, and Man taluka (also spelt Maan) lies south of it with Dahiwadi and Mhaswad. Both register at Phaltan, so their plates read MH 53.

How does Satara district split into MH 11, MH 50 and MH 53?

Satara district is divided between three registering offices. The headquarters at Camp issues MH 11, the Karad office issues MH 50, and the Phaltan office issues MH 53. The owner’s address on the application decides which office handles a vehicle, and so which code goes on the plate.

Why a district gets sub-offices

Satara district covers about 10,480 sq km and had 30,03,741 people in the 2011 census. Sub-offices at Karad and Phaltan save owners in the far talukas a long trip to Camp, Satara.

Which office is your parent office?

Sub-offices handle everyday registration and licence work for their talukas. For anything unusual, the Satara headquarters may still be involved, so check the state office list.

Why does one list call MH 11 the entire district?

The Wikipedia RTO list describes MH 11’s area as “Entire Satara district”, while the same list gives Karad, Patan, Phaltan and Man to sub-offices. Both lines can be true: the Satara RTO is the parent office for the district, but day-to-day registration in those four talukas happens at the sub-offices.

What this means for you

If you live in Karad or Phaltan, expect MH 50 or MH 53 on a new vehicle. If you live anywhere else in the district, expect MH 11.

When to double-check

Boundaries can change by state notification. Before you buy, ask the dealer which office the registration will go to; the dealer’s system shows it.

What does MH 11 passing mean?

MH 11 passing means a vehicle registered at the Satara RTO. “Passing” is the everyday Marathi and Hindi way of saying registration, so “Satara passing”, “MH 11 passing” and “Satara RTO code” all point to the same office. It says nothing about the owner’s street or village within the district.

Passing is about the office, not the dealer

A car bought from a showroom in Pune by a Wai resident is registered against the owner’s address. It gets Satara passing, not Pune passing.

Older plates with the same code

A vehicle registered at Camp, Satara many years ago shows the same two digits as one registered last week. Old and new plates share the code; only the series letters differ.

Is MH 11 the same as MH 12?

No. MH 11 is Satara and MH 12 is Pune. The two districts share a long border, and the highway between them carries heavy traffic, so people often guess the codes are linked. They are separate offices with separate areas, and the number stays with the office that first registered the vehicle.

Comparison of MH 11 passing Satara with MH 12 Pune registration areas
The two districts share a border, so both codes are common on the same roads.

The Pune code is changing; Satara’s is not

Pune’s MH 12 series has run out and new Pune vehicles now get MH 61. Nothing similar has been reported for Satara. Our guide to MH 12 which city explains the Pune change.

Moving between the two districts

A Satara owner who moves to Pune keeps the MH 11 number. Within Maharashtra, only the address on the record changes.

Which neighbouring district codes appear around Satara?

Satara district touches five districts: Pune to the north, Raigad to the north-west, Solapur to the east, Sangli to the south and Ratnagiri to the west. Their codes are the ones you will most often see next to MH 11 on Satara roads, at markets and on the ghat routes towards the coast.

Codes that look close but are not

MH 10 Sangli and MH 11 Satara sit side by side in the list and on the map. A smudged plate can make one look like the other, so check the full number online before you act on it.

The coast-side codes

Ghat roads from Mahabaleshwar lead down towards Raigad and Ratnagiri, so MH 06 and MH 08 vehicles are common in the hill towns.

Where is the Satara RTO office at Camp?

The Satara RTO is listed at Camp, Satara, the cantonment-era part of the city. This is the office that registers MH 11 vehicles and handles licence work for the seven talukas above. Book any service that needs a visit online first, and carry the appointment slip.

Getting there

We have not found an official map pin or landmark from the state site. Use the address on your appointment slip, which is generated from the official office record.

Confirm before travelling

Office lists on private sites sometimes mix up headquarters and sub-office details. Check transport.maharashtra.gov.in or the office chosen in your Parivahan booking.

Why we do not print an email address

We did not find an email for the Satara office in any source we could open. Guessing a format would risk sending your documents to the wrong place.

Saturday visits

Government offices in Maharashtra do not always work every Saturday. Check your slot date before travelling.

Which services does the Satara RTO handle?

The Satara RTO handles the normal work of a Maharashtra transport office: new registrations, ownership transfers, address changes on the RC, loan entries and removals, no objection certificates, permits and fitness for transport vehicles, and driving licences. Most of these start online on Vahan or Sarathi.

Online first, visit later

Applications, fee payment and document upload happen online. The office then approves the request, sometimes without a visit, or gives you a slot for inspection or a test.

Statewide rules and portals

The Satara office follows Maharashtra-wide rules for tax, permits and records. For the state portal and its services, see our guide to Maharashtra RC details.

How does a new vehicle in Satara get an MH 11 number?

A new private car or two-wheeler bought by a Satara resident is usually registered through dealer-point registration. The dealer enters the details on Vahan, uploads your documents and pays the fee and tax you owe. The system then allots the next available MH 11 number.

What you hand over

Expect to give proof of address and identity, insurance and the sale papers. Your address must fall in an MH 11 taluka for the number to be MH 11.

The high-security plate

The dealer fits a high-security registration plate before delivery. It shows the MH 11 code, series and number in standard characters.

Can you pick a choice MH 11 number?

Yes. Maharashtra lets owners book a choice or fancy number in the series their office is currently issuing, for a fee set by the state. Popular numbers can go to auction when several people want them. Apply on the Vahan fancy-number service before your vehicle is registered.

Timing matters

A choice number is booked against the series that is open at the Satara office. If that series closes before you apply, the number you wanted may already be gone.

Fees and bidding

Rates differ by number and vehicle type. Read our guide to VIP number plate price for how the fees and bidding work.

Driving licence work at the Satara office

The Satara office handles learner and permanent licences for residents of its talukas. You apply online on Sarathi, choose the Satara office, and visit for the driving test on your slot date. Owners in Karad or Phaltan talukas would normally pick their own sub-office instead.

Choosing the right office

Sarathi asks you to select an RTO. Pick the one that matches the address on your proof, or your application may be sent back.

Licence numbers and codes

Your licence number also begins with MH and an office code. For a Satara licence, that code reflects the issuing office.

How is the MH 11 RTO code used in Vahan searches?

The MH 11 RTO code is the first part of every Satara registration number, and Vahan uses the full number as its search key. Type the number without spaces, such as MH11AB1234, into Vahan or mParivahan. The result shows the registering authority as Satara.

Office code in forms

Forms for transfer, address change or NOC ask for the registering authority. For an MH 11 vehicle, that is the Satara RTO, even if you now live elsewhere.

Searching by code alone

You cannot list all MH 11 vehicles by code. Searches only work on one complete number at a time.

How do you read an MH 11 number plate?

An MH 11 plate is read in four parts. The state letters and the office code tell you where the vehicle was registered; the series letters and the four digits are only a serial. To learn anything about the vehicle’s papers, search the complete number online.

  1. Check the first two letters. MH tells you the vehicle was registered in Maharashtra.
  2. Check the two digits. 11 points to the Satara RTO at Camp, Satara.
  3. Skip the series letters. Letters such as AB or CD only show the order in which numbers were issued.
  4. Search the full number. Enter the complete registration number on Vahan or mParivahan to see the official record.
Four steps to read the MH 11 RTO code on a Satara number plate
Only the first two blocks carry location; the rest is a serial.

What the series letters do not show

A series such as MH 11 CD does not mean Koregaon or Wai. All talukas of the office draw from the same running series.

How do you check an MH 11 vehicle online?

To check an MH 11 vehicle, enter its full number on the Vahan citizen portal or in the mParivahan app. You will see the registering office, registration date, fuel type and validity, with the owner’s name partly masked. That record is more reliable than any reading of the plate.

Useful before buying or after an accident

The record confirms the plate matches the vehicle class and shows whether insurance and fitness are current. Our guide to RTO vehicle information explains each field.

When the search returns nothing

A typo is the usual cause. Re-enter the number without spaces, and check that the letter O and the digit 0 are not swapped.

Does an MH 11 plate change when the owner moves?

Within Maharashtra, no. A Satara vehicle keeps its MH 11 number when the owner moves to Pune, Mumbai or anywhere else in the state; only the address on the record is updated. If the owner moves to another state for more than a year, the vehicle should be re-registered there.

Moving out of state

Re-registration elsewhere needs a no objection certificate from the Satara office and a new number in the new state.

Selling to a buyer elsewhere

On a sale within the state, the number stays the same and ownership is transferred on Vahan.

Should you trust the plate alone when buying a used MH 11 car?

No. The plate only tells you the vehicle was first registered at Satara. It does not prove who owns it now, whether a loan is recorded or whether the papers are valid. Check the full number online, match the chassis number on the RC and see the original documents before paying.

Match the plate to the RC

The registration certificate should name the Satara RTO as the registering authority. If it names Karad or Phaltan, the plate should read MH 50 or MH 53 instead.

Loan and NOC checks

A hypothecation entry on the record means a bank still has an interest in the vehicle. Ask the seller for the bank’s NOC.

What mistakes do people make with MH 11 plates?

Most mistakes come from treating MH 11 as a code for the whole district or for the owner’s home. Karad and Phaltan vehicles carry other codes, and a vehicle can stay in a district for years after its owner leaves. The image sums up the common slips.

Common mistakes when guessing the Satara district town from an MH 11 plate
Check the Vahan record before you rely on a plate for anything important.

Confusing Satara and Sangli

MH 10 and MH 11 are neighbours in number and on the map, and a dirty plate can blur the last digit.

Assuming the hill towns are Pune

Many visitors think Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani are in Pune district. They are in Satara district, and their own vehicles carry MH 11.

Where does MH 11 sit among the western MH codes?

In the Maharashtra list, MH 11 sits between MH 10 Sangli and MH 12 Pune. The district’s sub-office codes, MH 50 Karad and MH 53 Phaltan, appear much further down the list. Our RTO codes guide lists every state and office.

Why the numbers jump

In the published list, the district headquarters offices hold the low numbers, while sub-offices such as Karad and Phaltan carry higher ones. That is why their codes sit far from 11.

MH 11 which city questions

MH 11 is which city?

MH 11 is Satara, the headquarters of Satara district in western Maharashtra. The registering office stands in the Camp area of the city.

Is Karad MH 11?

No. Karad has its own sub-office at Supane with the code MH 50, which also covers Patan taluka.

Which code does Phaltan use?

Phaltan uses MH 53. The Phaltan office on Shinganpur Road registers vehicles from Phaltan and Man talukas.

Is Mahabaleshwar MH 11?

Mahabaleshwar taluka is not assigned to the Karad or Phaltan sub-offices, so its vehicles normally carry MH 11. Confirm with the RTO if you live near a taluka border.

What is the Satara RTO phone number?

One car-sale listing gives 02162-230330. We could not confirm it on the Maharashtra transport department site, so check there before you call.

Does an MH 11 plate mean the owner lives in Satara?

Not necessarily. The code records where the vehicle was first registered. The owner may have moved within Maharashtra and kept the same number.

Is MH 11 near Pune?

Yes. Satara district borders Pune district to the north, so MH 11 and MH 12 vehicles share many roads, but they come from different offices.

How do I find who owns an MH 11 vehicle?

Search the full number on Vahan or mParivahan. You will see masked owner details, registration date and validity, not a full name and address.

Can I get a choice number in the MH 11 series?

Yes, Maharashtra RTOs allot choice numbers for a fee set by the state. Apply through the fancy-number service on Vahan when your series is open.
