MH 20 which city: Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, the old Aurangabad
MH 20 which city? It is Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, the Marathwada city that was called Aurangabad until its formal renaming in 2023. The RTO on Railway Station Road registers vehicles from the city and most of the district. Vaijapur and Gangapur talukas are listed under a separate sub-office code, MH 57. Existing MH 20 numbers did not change with the new name.
Key takeaways
- MH 20 is Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad), with its RTO on Railway Station Road.
- The district has nine tehsils; the published list puts Vaijapur and Gangapur under MH 57 Vaijapur.
- The 2023 renaming did not alter registration numbers: an MH 20 plate stays MH 20.
- BR 26 is a different Aurangabad, in Bihar. Do not mix the two up in searches.
- Neighbouring codes include MH 21 Jalna, MH 15 Nashik, MH 19 Jalgaon and MH 16 / MH 17 for Ahmednagar.
- We could not verify the office phone, email or hours, so confirm them on the state transport site.

MH 20 which city is it?
The short reply to MH 20 which city is Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, the largest city of Maharashtra’s Marathwada region and the place most people still call Aurangabad. Its Regional Transport Office sits on Railway Station Road and issues the MH 20 code to vehicles first registered there.

A city better known by its old name
Signboards, maps and many websites still say Aurangabad, so searchers often type both names. They point to the same place: the city of the Ajanta and Ellora gateway, Bibi Ka Maqbara and a large MIDC industrial belt.
What the code tells you
An MH 20 plate tells you only where the vehicle was first registered. It does not tell you where the owner lives today, whether the vehicle is insured, or who owns it now. Those answers sit in the Vahan record.
What is the MH 20 city name today?
The official MH 20 city name is now Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The state’s renaming of Aurangabad city and district was formally completed in September 2023, alongside Osmanabad becoming Dharashiv. In May 2024 the Bombay High Court dismissed petitions that challenged both renamings.

How the name appears on records
Newer government pages and RTO notices use Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Older registration certificates printed before 2023 can still show Aurangabad as the registering authority, which is expected and does not make them invalid.
Short forms you will hear
Locals often shorten the new name to Sambhajinagar or simply “Sambhaji Nagar”. Dealers, insurers and transporters may use any of these, or the old name, on quotes and invoices.
Why do people still say MH 20 Aurangabad?
Most people searching MH 20 Aurangabad grew up with that name, and it stayed in daily use for decades before the 2023 change. Railway stations, bus routes, company letterheads and older vehicle papers kept the old name for a long time, so both labels now describe the same MH 20 office.
Old and new names on one vehicle
A car bought in 2015 might carry an RC that reads Aurangabad, an insurance renewal that reads Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and a plate that reads MH 20. Nothing here is wrong; it only reflects when each paper was printed.
Which name to use on forms
On new online applications, pick the office name exactly as the Vahan or Sarathi drop-down shows it. Searching both names in the list is the quickest way to find it.
Which talukas register under MH 20?
The district has nine tehsils: Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Paithan, Phulambri, Khuldabad, Kannad, Sillod, Soegaon, Vaijapur and Gangapur. The RTO list describes MH 20 as covering the whole district, yet the same list gives Vaijapur and Gangapur to a sub-office, leaving seven tehsils with the city office.

| Tehsil | Code listed | Where it lies |
|---|---|---|
| Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar | MH 20 | City and its rural ring |
| Paithan | MH 20 | South, on the Godavari |
| Phulambri | MH 20 | North-east of the city |
| Khuldabad | MH 20 | North-west, near Ellora |
| Kannad | MH 20 | North-west, towards Chalisgaon |
| Sillod | MH 20 | North-east, towards Ajanta |
| Soegaon | MH 20 | Far north, by the Jalgaon border |
| Vaijapur | MH 57 | West, towards Nashik |
| Gangapur | MH 57 | South-west, towards Ahilyanagar |
Why the list looks contradictory
Lists of RTO codes are often updated in pieces. The MH 20 entry still says “entire district”, while a later MH 57 entry carves out two tehsils. We show both and recommend confirming a borderline address with the RTO.
Towns that follow their tehsil
Industrial suburbs and villages on the city’s edge do not automatically fall under MH 20. The tehsil on the owner’s address proof decides the office, not the nearest landmark or the PIN code.
Do Vaijapur and Gangapur use a different code?
Yes, according to the published list. The Vaijapur sub-office at Valmik Nagar issues MH 57 for Vaijapur and Gangapur tehsils, saving residents a trip into the city for inspections and tests. Our guide to MH 57 and other Marathwada codes explains that office in more detail.
Same district, separate digits
MH 57 is not a series of MH 20. It is a separate code with its own number sequence, even though both offices sit inside the same district.
Check before you book
If you live near the boundary of Gangapur and the city tehsil, select both offices in the booking portal and see which one accepts your address.
Where is the RTO office Aurangabad?
The RTO office Aurangabad, now named after Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, is listed on Railway Station Road in the city. That is the only location detail we could confirm from the published list. For the full address, PIN and timings, use the state directory or the slip you get after booking an appointment online.
Getting there
As the name suggests, Railway Station Road leads towards the city’s main railway station. Ask locally or use a maps app with the office name, since aggregator addresses are not always current.
Book a slot first
Licence tests, fitness checks and many corrections need an online appointment. The slip names the office, date and counter, so turning up without it usually wastes the trip.
What can we verify about MH20 RTO office details and contacts?
For the MH20 RTO we could confirm the code, the road the office stands on and the tehsils it serves. We could not confirm a street address, PIN code, phone number, email or opening hours on an official page, so we do not print any. The table shows what is sourced and what still needs checking.
| Detail | What we found | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Code | MH 20 | RTO list |
| Office road | Railway Station Road | RTO list |
| Tehsils served | Seven of nine | RTO list and district page |
| Sub-office in district | MH 57 Vaijapur | RTO list |
| Address, PIN, phone, email | Not verified | Check state site |
| Office hours | Not verified | Check appointment slip |
Where current contacts live
The transport.maharashtra.gov.in office directory is the place to look first. The Parivahan appointment slip is a reliable second source because it is generated for the office you chose.
Treat copied addresses with care
Many websites repeat one address across several offices or mix the city RTO with the Vaijapur office. If two pages disagree, follow the state list.
Which services does the MH 20 office handle?
The Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar office handles the usual work of a Maharashtra RTO: new registration, transfer of ownership, address changes, hypothecation entries, duplicate RCs, NOCs, permits for commercial vehicles, fitness tests and driving licences. Most tasks begin online on Vahan or Sarathi; a visit is needed only for checks done in person.
Registration at the dealership
New private cars and two-wheelers bought from city dealers are normally registered through the dealer, who uploads documents so the MH 20 number is allotted without the buyer queuing at the office.
Tasks that still need you there
Driving tests, commercial fitness inspections and some record corrections require attendance. The statewide portal and its RC services are covered in our Maharashtra RC details guide.
What does the MH 20 RTO code look like on a plate?
The MH 20 RTO code always appears as the first four characters of the registration number: the state letters MH followed by the office digits 20. A complete number reads like MH 20 AB 1234, with series letters and a four-digit serial after the code.
On high-security plates
New vehicles get a high-security registration plate fitted through the dealer. It shows the same number in English capitals and Arabic numerals, with a hologram and laser-etched identifier.
On the RC and in apps
The registration certificate and the mParivahan app show the number with or without spaces. MH20AB1234 and MH 20 AB 1234 are the same registration.
How do you read an MH 20 number step by step?
You need four quick checks. The state letters and the two office digits tell you where the vehicle was first registered; the series letters and the serial number only show its place in the issue sequence. For ownership, insurance or loans, you need the official record.

- Read the state letters. MH means the vehicle was first registered in Maharashtra.
- Read the two digits. 20 points to the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar RTO; 57 points to Vaijapur.
- Ignore the series letters. The letters only show where in the issue sequence the number fell.
- Search the whole number. Type the complete number into Vahan or mParivahan to see the official record.
Series letters are not places
Letters such as AB, CX or EZ do not stand for a ward, taluka or vehicle class. They simply move forward as numbers are used up.
Special and choice numbers
A low or repeating serial, such as 0001, usually means the owner paid for a choice number. It does not change what the code says about the office.
Is MH 20 the same as Aurangabad in Bihar?
No. India has two Aurangabads: the Maharashtra city now called Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and a district headquarters in Bihar. The Bihar district registers vehicles under BR 26, so a search for an Aurangabad RTO can return the wrong state. Our Bihar number plate guide covers the BR codes.
How to tell them apart
Look at the first two letters. MH is Maharashtra and BR is Bihar. Only the Maharashtra city uses MH 20.
Why it matters
Address proofs, insurance quotes and challan searches can go wrong if the state is picked incorrectly in a drop-down. Always choose Maharashtra for MH 20 records.
Which codes border Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district?
The district touches four others: Nashik to the west, Jalgaon to the north, Jalna to the east and Ahmednagar (now Ahilyanagar) to the south. Their offices issue MH 15, MH 19, MH 21 and MH 16 or MH 17, so these plates are common on roads around the city.
| Direction | District | Nearest codes listed |
|---|---|---|
| West | Nashik | MH 15 Nashik, MH 41 Malegaon |
| North | Jalgaon | MH 19 Jalgaon, MH 54 Bhadgaon |
| East | Jalna | MH 21 Jalna |
| South | Ahmednagar | MH 16 Ahmednagar, MH 17 Shrirampur |
The northern border
Soegaon and Sillod run up to the Jalgaon district line near the Ajanta hills. For the Jalgaon side, see MH 19 which city.
The southern border
Paithan and Gangapur face Ahmednagar district across the Godavari. Shrirampur’s MH 17 covers Nevasa and Kopargaon, which sit closest to that stretch.
How do MH 20 and MH 21 Jalna differ?
MH 21 is Jalna, the district directly east of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The Jalna office at Nagewadi covers the whole of that district with a single code, while Sambhajinagar district is split between MH 20 and MH 57. Both follow the same state rules and fees.

Why the two are confused
The districts share a long border and a busy highway, and many people commute or trade between the two cities. Plates from both offices therefore mix freely on local roads.
Which office to use
Your address proof decides it. A Jalna address goes to MH 21; a Sambhajinagar city address goes to MH 20.
Which Marathwada codes sit around MH 20?
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is the divisional headquarters of Marathwada, an eight-district region in central Maharashtra. Besides MH 20 and MH 57, the region’s offices issue MH 21 Jalna, MH 22 Parbhani, MH 23 and MH 44 for Beed, MH 24 and MH 55 for Latur, MH 25 Dharashiv, MH 26 Nanded and MH 38 Hingoli.
Districts with one code
Jalna, Parbhani, Dharashiv, Nanded and Hingoli each use a single code for the whole district in the published list, much like the older description of MH 20.
Districts split between two codes
Beed shares its area between MH 23 and the Ambajogai office (MH 44). Latur is split between MH 24 and Udgir (MH 55). Sambhajinagar follows the same pattern with MH 57.
How do you check an MH 20 vehicle online?
Enter the full number on the Vahan citizen portal or in the mParivahan app. The result shows the registering office, vehicle class, fuel type, registration date and the validity of insurance and fitness, with the owner’s name partly masked. The office should match the MH 20 code unless the record was transferred.
What the record should show
For a vehicle first registered in the city, the registering authority reads Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar or, on older records, Aurangabad. Either is correct for MH 20.
When the office is different
If an MH 20 number shows another Maharashtra office, the owner probably moved and updated the address. The number itself never changes inside the state.
What should a used-vehicle buyer check on an MH 20 RC?
Before paying, match the chassis and engine numbers on the vehicle with the RC and the Vahan record, confirm there are no pending challans, and check whether a bank hypothecation is still recorded. A loan entry must be removed before ownership can be transferred to you cleanly.
Paper checks
Ask for the original RC, valid insurance, a current pollution certificate and the seller’s ID. Names on all four should match.
Office checks
Transfer of ownership is filed with the office holding the record. For most city vehicles that is the MH 20 office; for Vaijapur or Gangapur vehicles it is usually MH 57.
Did the renaming change existing MH 20 numbers?
No. A registration number belongs to the vehicle, not to the town’s name, and we found no notice asking owners to change plates or RCs after the 2023 renaming. An MH 20 vehicle registered in 2010 and one registered last month carry the same code and are equally valid.
Do you need a fresh RC?
There is no need to reprint an RC just because it says Aurangabad. If you later apply for a duplicate or update other details, the new copy may show the new name.
Insurance and loan papers
Insurers and banks accept either name for the same office. If a form insists on one, use the name shown in the Vahan record.
Does the code change when you move within Maharashtra?
No. An MH 20 vehicle keeps its number for life inside Maharashtra, even if the owner moves to Pune, Nagpur or Mumbai. The owner only updates the address on the record through Vahan, and the plate stays exactly as it is.
Why MH 20 plates appear everywhere
This is why MH 20 cars turn up across the state: owners move for work or study, and buyers in other cities purchase second-hand vehicles from Sambhajinagar.
Selling to someone in another city
A buyer in Nashik who purchases an MH 20 car keeps MH 20 after the transfer is recorded. Only the owner’s details change.
What happens if you take an MH 20 vehicle to another state?
If you move to another state and keep the vehicle there beyond the permitted period, you must re-register it locally. That process starts with a no objection certificate from the MH 20 office, which you then present to the new state’s RTO with the other documents it asks for.
Clearing dues first
Pending challans and an active loan entry can hold up the NOC, so clear both before you apply.
Short trips need nothing
Driving an MH 20 vehicle through other states on a trip needs no change at all. Carry the RC, insurance, pollution certificate and your licence.
What does Sambhajinagar passing mean in local speech?
In Marathi and Hindi conversation, “passing” means the vehicle has been registered and passed by the RTO. Sambhajinagar passing, Aurangabad passing and MH 20 passing all mean the same thing: a vehicle first registered at the city office. A Vaijapur vehicle would be described with its own MH 57 code.
How dealers use it
Some sellers use the phrase loosely for any vehicle sold in the city. If the buyer lives in Gangapur, the plate may still read MH 57.
Why buyers ask
Some buyers prefer a vehicle registered locally because transfers and record corrections happen at the nearby office rather than a distant one.
Which mistakes do people make with the MH 20 code?
The most common slip is assuming the renaming means new plates. Others think every tehsil in the district uses MH 20, or confuse the Maharashtra city with Aurangabad in Bihar. The card below sets out each mix-up and the correct reading.

Reading too much into a plate
The code shows only the first registering office. Ownership, loans and insurance come from Vahan and the RC.
Trusting one list
Code lists, ours included, rely on published sources that can trail behind changes. For a borderline tehsil, ask the RTO.
Who should you contact for an MH 20 problem?
Start with the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar RTO for anything about an MH 20 record, and with the Vaijapur office for MH 57. Online problems with Vahan or Sarathi applications are best raised through the portal’s own grievance or helpdesk link. The RTO codes hub lists every state’s offices.
Keep your reference numbers
Note the application number, receipt and appointment slip for every request. Staff can trace a pending case much faster with them.
Before you travel
Confirm the office, date and documents on your slip, and check the state transport site for holiday closures before setting out.

MH 20 is which city?
MH 20 is Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, the city formerly called Aurangabad, in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra.
Is MH 20 Aurangabad?
Yes. Aurangabad is the old name of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The city and district were formally renamed in 2023, but the MH 20 code stayed the same.
Where is the MH20 RTO office?
The published RTO list places it on Railway Station Road in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. We could not verify the full street address or PIN, so check the state directory before visiting.
Is Vaijapur MH 20?
Not in the list we checked. Vaijapur and Gangapur talukas are listed under the Vaijapur sub-office, which issues MH 57.
Is Paithan MH 20?
Yes. Paithan is one of the seven tehsils that are not assigned to another office in the list, so it registers under MH 20.
What is the RTO code of Aurangabad in Bihar?
Aurangabad district in Bihar uses BR 26. It has no link with MH 20, which belongs to the Maharashtra city.
Do I need a new number plate because Aurangabad was renamed?
We found no notice asking owners to change plates. A registration number is tied to the vehicle, not to the town's name, so MH 20 numbers stay valid.
What is the MH 20 RTO phone number?
We could not confirm a phone number on an official source. Use the office list on transport.maharashtra.gov.in or the details printed on your Parivahan appointment slip.
Is MH 21 near MH 20?
Yes. MH 21 is Jalna, the district immediately east of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The two cities are connected by a direct highway.
