MH 47 which city: the Borivali code issued from Dahisar West

By , Editor and reviewer · Updated · 15 min read · Independent guide, not a government website

In short

MH 47 which city? It is Mumbai, specifically the Mumbai North regional transport office, usually called Borivali RTO but housed in Dahisar West. It registers vehicles and handles licence work for the north-western suburbs from Goregaon to Dahisar. Those suburbs used the Andheri code MH 02 until 2015, so older local cars may still show MH 02.

Key takeaways

  • MH 47 is Mumbai North, the office people call Borivali RTO, located in Dahisar West.
  • Its area runs from Goregaon to Dahisar in Mumbai Suburban district.
  • The belt moved from MH 02 Andheri to MH 47 after 2015; existing numbers did not change.
  • The street address and email we show come from a directory, so confirm them on the state transport list first.
  • Mira Road and Bhayandar sit in Thane district, outside the MH 47 area.

MH 47 which city is it?

If you are asking MH 47 which city, the answer is Mumbai, and more precisely its north-western corner. MH 47 belongs to the Mumbai North regional transport office, which serves the suburbs from Goregaon up to Dahisar. A plate beginning MH 47 means the vehicle was first registered at that office.

One of four Mumbai codes

Greater Mumbai does not share a single prefix. Tardeo issues MH 01, Andheri MH 02, Wadala MH 03 and Dahisar MH 47. The two digits after MH identify the issuing office, so MH 47 tells you about a strip of the western suburbs rather than the whole metropolis.

What the plate cannot tell you

The code records the office of first registration and nothing else. It does not reveal where the present owner lives, where the car was sold or who is driving it. Those details belong to the registration record held on Vahan, which you can search separately.

What is the MH 47 RTO name?

The MH 47 RTO name in the published list of Maharashtra offices is Mumbai North (Borivali). The Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Department names its Mumbai offices by direction, so North sits alongside Central, West and East. In everyday speech you will hear Borivali RTO, Dahisar RTO and Mumbai North used for the same office.

Deputy RTO status

A Mumbai RTO directory describes the office as a Deputy RTO, meaning it is run by a deputy regional transport officer. For owners, that label changes nothing.

Name on your RC

On a registration certificate or a Vahan search result, the registering authority usually appears as a Mumbai North style name rather than as “Dahisar”.

Why is it called Borivali when the office is in Dahisar?

The listing names the office after Borivali, the best-known suburb in its area, but places the building in Dahisar West, the next suburb north. That mismatch is the single biggest source of confusion: people head to Borivali station expecting a transport office and find none nearby.

Treat the two names as one

Whether a friend says Borivali RTO or Dahisar RTO, they mean the MH 47 office. No separate Borivali counter is listed in any source we checked, and only one code, MH 47, belongs to this part of Mumbai.

Plan the trip to Dahisar

Set your route to Dahisar West, not to Borivali. Dahisar is one station north on the Western line.

Which suburbs come under MH 47?

The published jurisdiction for MH 47 is Goregaon to Dahisar in Mumbai Suburban district. In practice that means the stretch of the western suburbs north of Jogeshwari: Goregaon, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali and Dahisar. Residents of those areas register vehicles and apply for licences through the Mumbai North office.

East of the railway

The list describes the area as Goregaon to Dahisar without separating east from west. Localities such as Malad East, Kandivali East and Borivali East, towards Sanjay Gandhi National Park, are therefore normally treated as MH 47 territory. A pincode check settles doubt.

The Goregaon edge

Most wrong guesses happen at the Jogeshwari and Goregaon border, around Oshiwara and the Goregaon film city side. If your address sits near that line, start the online application and see which office the portal assigns before you plan a visit.

Jogeshwari is the last suburb before the MH 47 boundary begins.

Is MH 47 in Mumbai City or Mumbai Suburban district?

MH 47 sits wholly within Mumbai Suburban district. Mumbai City district, the island part south of Mahim and Sion, is served by Tardeo under MH 01. Everything in the MH 47 area, from Goregaon northwards, is suburban, which is why the address on your proof should mention Mumbai Suburban or a 4000xx suburban pincode.

Why the district matters little

For daily purposes the two districts behave like one city, with one municipal corporation. The district matters only because transport offices follow these administrative limits, and the MH 47 boundary stops where Mumbai Suburban ends at Dahisar.

The northern limit

North of Dahisar the road crosses into Thane district at Mira Road. That is a different district and a different office. So the far edge of MH 47 is the Dahisar check naka area, not Mira Road or Bhayandar.

What is the MH 47 RTO address?

A Mumbai RTO directory gives the MH 47 RTO address as Deputy RTO, No. 53/4, behind Palak Pluto, BMC Road Depot Building, Kandarpada, Dahisar (West), Mumbai 400068. We could not open the Maharashtra transport department site to confirm it, so treat this as a secondary listing and check it before travelling.

Kandarpada as a landmark

The directory places the office in Kandarpada, a locality of Dahisar West, inside a municipal road depot building. Kandarpada plus 400068 in a maps app should bring you close.

Why we flag it as unverified

Street numbers and building names move when offices are renovated or shifted. We mark anything we could not match on an official page.

Where is the RTO office Dahisar located?

The RTO office Dahisar stands on the western side of Dahisar, the last suburb of Mumbai before the Thane district boundary. Both the published RTO list and the directory agree on Dahisar West, so whichever source you use, you should be heading west of the railway line rather than towards the highway side.

West, not the highway side

Dahisar East runs up to the Western Express Highway and the national park edge. The transport office is listed on the opposite side. If a maps app sends you east of the tracks, recheck the pin before you set off.

How do you reach the RTO in Dahisar West?

The RTO in Dahisar West is easiest to reach by suburban train. Get off at Dahisar station on the Western line, leave by the west side and take an auto-rickshaw for the short last stretch to Kandarpada. From Borivali, one station south, the same auto ride is a little longer.

By road

Drivers coming from the south usually follow Link Road or SV Road north through Kandivali and Borivali. Allow extra time for parking.

Bring the vehicle only when needed

Many services, such as a duplicate licence or address change on a licence, do not need the vehicle at the office. Bring it only when the service requires an inspection, such as a fitness check or certain transfer cases.

What is the Borivali RTO code?

The Borivali RTO code is MH 47. Any vehicle registered at the Mumbai North office after the 2015 change in limits receives a number starting MH 47, followed by series letters and a four-digit number. A separate page explains the code in the context of the Dahisar RTO code and MH47 city name.

MH 47, MH-47 or MH47

All three spellings mean the same office. Number plates print the state letters and digits together, and search portals ignore the hyphen and spaces. When you type a number into Vahan, enter it without spaces.

Not MH 02 any more

People sometimes quote Borivali as MH 02 because older vehicles there carry it. For new registrations from this belt the code has been MH 47 since the area moved, and MH 02 now covers only Bandra to Jogeshwari.

Is the Borivali RTO address the same as Dahisar?

Yes. Searches for the Borivali RTO address lead to the same office in Kandarpada, Dahisar West, because no separate transport office is listed inside Borivali. If a website gives you a Borivali street address for the RTO, compare it with the state list before relying on it.

One office, two search terms

The duplicate naming means online maps sometimes show two pins. Pick the one that matches the Dahisar West listing, and look at recent visitor photos of the gate if the app offers them.

How can you contact the Dahisar RTO?

The directory lists [email protected] as the email for the Dahisar RTO. It also lists several landline numbers, but two of them are repeated against the Andheri office in the same source, so we have not printed any. Use the official office list for a working phone number.

When email works

Email suits questions that need a written answer, such as a pending file, a document query or a request that the counter could not resolve. Include your application or registration number, your name and a phone number in the first message.

Online grievances

For problems with an online application, the Vahan and Sarathi portals have their own help options.

When are the Dahisar counters open?

We found no published timetable for the Dahisar counters. What is documented is that Maharashtra government offices moved to a five-day week from 29 February 2020, with official hours of 9.45 am to 6.15 pm, Monday to Friday. Public dealing windows at RTOs are usually shorter.

When did MH 47 take over from Andheri?

According to the published RTO list, the suburbs from Goregaon to Dahisar were handled by the Andheri office (MH 02) until 2015, after which they came under MH 47. The list does not give the exact date the Mumbai North office opened, so we only state the year of the change.

Why a fourth office

Before the change, Andheri served the entire western suburbs from Bandra to Dahisar, one of the busiest areas in the state for new vehicles.

What moved and what stayed

New applications from Goregaon northwards started going to Mumbai North. Vehicles already registered at Andheri kept their numbers, but their later services, such as transfers or address changes, are generally handled by the office that covers the owner’s current address.

Why do some Malad cars still carry MH 02?

A car in Malad, Kandivali or Borivali with an MH 02 plate was almost certainly registered before 2015, when Andheri still covered the area. A registration mark is assigned once and is not reissued when office limits are redrawn, so those older numbers remain on the road.

Buying such a car second-hand

An MH 02 car from a northern suburb is not a warning sign by itself. Check the RC, the owner’s details and any pending challans as you would for any used vehicle. For background on the Andheri side, see our MH 02 which city guide.

Where its later work goes

When an MH 02 owner who lives in Malad applies for a transfer or an RC change, the portal normally routes the work by the current address. That usually means Mumbai North, even though the plate shows Andheri.

Which services does the Dahisar RTO handle?

The Dahisar RTO handles the usual mix of vehicle and licence work for its area. That covers new registrations, ownership transfers, address changes on the RC, hypothecation entries and removals, duplicate RCs, learner and driving licences, licence renewals and related permits, following the procedures set out on the national portals.

Vehicle side

Most new private vehicles are registered through the dealer, who submits the papers to the office. Owners deal with Dahisar directly for transfers, address changes, loan entries, duplicates and fitness or inspection where required.

Licence side

Learner licence applications start on Sarathi. Driving tests, licence renewals and changes of address on a licence are linked to the office covering your address. For anything state-specific, the Maharashtra transport department guide explains how the state portal fits with the national one.

How do you prepare online before a visit?

The quickest visits are those where the online part is already done. Start the application on Vahan or Sarathi, select Mumbai North if asked, pay any fee through the portal and book a slot where the service offers one. Then go to Dahisar only to show originals.

  1. Confirm the office. Make sure the pincode on your address proof falls between Goregaon and Dahisar.
  2. Start online. Submit the Vahan or Sarathi application and choose Mumbai North if the portal asks.
  3. Pay and pick a slot. Clear the fee through the portal and book an appointment where the service offers one.
  4. Visit Dahisar with originals. Take the printouts, original documents and a set of self-attested copies.

Fees are set by the portal

We do not list fees here because they depend on the service and vehicle class, and the portal calculates them at payment. Rely on the amount shown on the portal, and keep the receipt for the counter.

Four steps to prepare before visiting the RTO office Dahisar for any service
Most of the work happens online; the counter visit only checks papers.

Which papers should you carry to Dahisar?

Carry the originals and one set of copies of everything you uploaded online, plus the application and payment receipts. The exact list depends on the service, but address proof matters most here, because it is what places your file with the Mumbai North office rather than Andheri.

Address proof for this office

The address should be in the Goregaon to Dahisar belt. If you recently moved from Jogeshwari or Mira Road, make sure the proof shows the new address, or the portal may route you to a different office.

Vehicle papers

For vehicle work, bring the RC, a valid insurance certificate and a current PUC certificate. Loan-related changes also need the lender’s letter or NOC, depending on whether you are adding or removing the entry.

How are MH 47 registration numbers built?

An MH 47 number follows the standard Indian format: MH for Maharashtra, 47 for the Mumbai North office, then one or two series letters and a four-digit number. The office moves to the next letter series once the current one runs out, so newer vehicles carry later letters.

Reading the series

The letters do not stand for a suburb or a vehicle type in any fixed way. They simply show the batch, so a later series usually means a more recent registration from the same office.

Plate details elsewhere

How plates differ by colour, and how to read a full Maharashtra registration, is explained in our page on Maharashtra vehicle details. This page sticks to the office side of MH 47.

How do you look up an MH 47 vehicle online?

You can check a vehicle’s basic details by entering its full number on the Vahan citizen portal or in the mParivahan app. The result shows the registering authority, model, registration date and status, with owner details partly masked. If the authority reads Mumbai North, the number belongs to the Dahisar office.

Reading the result

If the authority shows Mumbai West for a Kandivali address, the vehicle was registered at Andheri before the change. The step-by-step lookup is covered in our RTO vehicle information guide.

Decode other codes

How does MH 47 compare with MH 01, MH 02 and MH 03?

Each of Mumbai’s four codes covers a separate slice of the city. MH 47 is the north-western office, MH 02 the western suburbs further south, MH 03 the eastern suburbs and MH 01 the island city. The table sets them side by side.

The eastern side of the park

Sanjay Gandhi National Park separates MH 47 from the eastern suburbs. Mulund and Bhandup, on the other side, are MH 03 even though they lie at a similar latitude to Borivali.

Which codes sit next to MH 47?

MH 47 borders MH 02 Andheri to the south and Thane district to the north. Further north, Vasai-Virar and Palghar district are served by MH 48 from Bhatpara in Virar East. The full Maharashtra list sits in our RTO codes hub.

Across the Thane line

Mira Road and Bhayandar are in Thane district, so they fall outside MH 47. If you live there, confirm your office on the state list rather than assuming Dahisar because it is the nearest.

What happens when you move into or out of the MH 47 area?

The registration number stays the same when you move, but the record must follow you. Under Section 49 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, an owner reports a change of address within 30 days. Moving into Goregaon to Dahisar means later services go to Mumbai North.

Moving within Mumbai

A move from Andheri to Borivali keeps the MH 02 plate. Update the address on the RC through Vahan, and the file becomes linked to the office covering your new home.

Moving out of Maharashtra

Leaving the state for a long period means re-registering the vehicle there, which usually starts with a no objection certificate from the office holding your file.

Common mix-ups with MH 47

Most confusion about MH 47 comes from the Borivali name, the 2015 change and the northern boundary. The quick fixes below cover the cases readers ask about most, and the card sums them up.
