MH47 city name and what the Dahisar plate tells you
The MH47 city name is Mumbai. The prefix is issued by the Mumbai North (Borivali) transport office, whose building the state list places in Dahisar West. It covers the western suburbs from Goregaon to Dahisar in Mumbai Suburban district. Mira Road and Bhayandar, just across the Thane boundary, are listed under a separate office, MH 58.
Key takeaways
- MH47 means Mumbai, specifically the Mumbai North office known locally as Borivali or Dahisar RTO.
- The Dahisar RTO code covers Goregaon, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali and Dahisar.
- Before 2015 this belt registered at Andheri under MH 02, so older local cars keep that prefix.
- Mira Road and Bhayandar sit in Thane district and are listed under MH 58 Mira-Bhayandar.
- We do not print a street address or phone number; confirm them on the Maharashtra transport office list.

MH47 city name: which part of Mumbai is it?
The MH47 city name is Mumbai, but the prefix narrows it to one slice of the city: the north-western suburbs. Maharashtra’s transport department lists MH 47 as the Mumbai North (Borivali) office, with jurisdiction from Goregaon to Dahisar in Mumbai Suburban district. A car wearing MH47 was first registered for an owner in that belt.

Why one city has several prefixes
Greater Mumbai is too large for a single counter, so the state splits it among separate offices, each with its own number. The digits after MH identify the issuing office, not the city as a whole. Reading MH47, then, tells you a car began its life in the stretch that runs north from Goregaon.
City, district and suburb
Three layers apply here. The city is Mumbai, the revenue district is Mumbai Suburban, and the suburbs are the Western line stations from Goregaon to Dahisar. When someone asks for a city name they usually mean the first, but the second and third decide which office handles your file.
What is the Dahisar RTO code?
The Dahisar RTO code is MH 47. The building that the state list places in Dahisar West carries the official name Mumbai North (Borivali), which is why the same office answers to three names. Whatever you call it, the code it issues on new registrations is MH47, and no other Mumbai prefix belongs to Dahisar.
The naming puzzle
Borivali is the bigger, better-known suburb, so the office is titled after it. Dahisar is simply where the premises are listed. People who type Dahisar RTO into a search are looking for the same counter as those who type Borivali.

Which localities carry MH47 on their plates?
Any locality between Goregaon and Dahisar in Mumbai Suburban district falls inside the MH47 area, so new vehicles registered there receive the prefix. The list does not split the belt into east and west, so both sides of the Western Railway are generally included. Your pincode and address proof settle borderline cases.
| Locality | Side of the railway | Listed office |
|---|---|---|
| Goregaon, Aarey side | West and East | MH 47 Mumbai North |
| Malad, Malvani, Kurar | West and East | MH 47 Mumbai North |
| Kandivali, Charkop, Thakur Village | West and East | MH 47 Mumbai North |
| Borivali, Gorai, Magathane | West and East | MH 47 Mumbai North |
| Dahisar, Kandarpada, Rawalpada | West and East | MH 47 Mumbai North |
| Jogeshwari and south | Both | MH 02 Mumbai West |
Gorai and Manori
The creek-side villages of Gorai and Manori, reached by ferry or road from Borivali West, belong to Mumbai Suburban district and therefore to the same belt. Owners there use the Dahisar counter, even though the trip feels longer than the map suggests.
The park edge
Housing colonies on the edge of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, such as those in Borivali East and Dahisar East, also sit inside the area. The park itself is the dividing wall between this office and the eastern suburbs.
Do Mira Road and Bhayandar fall under MH47?
No. Mira Road and Bhayandar lie in Thane district, and the state list gives them their own office: MH 58 Mira-Bhayandar, located on Ghodbunder Road at Kashimira. Even though Dahisar is the nearest Mumbai suburb, a Mira Road address routes your application to Kashimira, not to the MH47 counter.
The check naka boundary
The Dahisar check naka on the highway sits roughly where Mumbai Suburban district ends. Cross it heading north and you leave the MH47 area, regardless of how close the next building looks.
What older Mira Road plates show
Vehicles in Mira Road may carry a range of prefixes depending on when and where they were first registered. A plate does not change when the owner moves or an office is created, so mixed prefixes in one housing society are normal.
When did the MH47 series begin?
The published list records that the Goregaon to Dahisar belt was handled by MH 02 Andheri until 2015, after which it passed to Mumbai North. That makes MH47 one of the newer Mumbai prefixes. The list gives the year but not a launch date, so we do not quote one.

Before the split
For years Andheri served every western suburb from Bandra to Dahisar. Splitting the northern half into its own office spread that load and gave residents a counter closer to home.
What the split meant for existing cars
Numbers issued earlier were not reissued. An MH 02 car parked in Kandivali is simply an older registration from the same neighbourhood, and its later paperwork follows the owner’s current address.
How can you confirm a plate was issued at Dahisar?
Enter the full registration number on the Vahan citizen portal or in the mParivahan app. The result names the registering authority; for an MH47 number it should read as a Mumbai North style name. If the authority shown does not match the prefix, ask the seller or owner to explain before you rely on the record.
What the search shows
The lookup returns the model, registration date, fuel type and validity details, with the owner’s name partly masked. It confirms the office of registration, not the current owner’s address.
Use the code decoder
How does the Dahisar code differ from its neighbours?
Travelling north on the Western line you pass four offices in turn. MH 02 Andheri serves Bandra to Jogeshwari, MH 47 Dahisar takes Goregaon to Dahisar, MH 58 Kashimira covers Mira-Bhayandar, and MH 48 at Virar East serves Vasai-Virar and Palghar district. Each boundary follows a municipal or district line.

South: Andheri
The Jogeshwari and Goregaon border is where most people guess wrong. If you live near Oshiwara, start the online form and see which office the portal picks.
North: Vasai and beyond
Beyond Bhayandar the creek separates Thane from Palghar district. The MH48 city name guide covers that office and the Palghar talukas it serves.
What work does the Dahisar office do for MH47 owners?
The Mumbai North office handles the full range of vehicle and licence services for residents of its belt. That includes new registrations, ownership transfers, RC address changes, loan entries and removals, duplicate RCs, NOCs for moving out of state, and learner and driving licence applications, almost all of which begin online.
Vehicle work
New private cars and two-wheelers are usually registered by the dealer. Owners come in themselves for transfers, inspections and changes to the RC, after filing the request on Vahan.
Licence work
Learner and driving licence applications start on Sarathi, and the test slot you book is linked to the office covering your address. For Goregaon to Dahisar residents, that is MH47.
Where should you confirm the Dahisar office details?
Use the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Department office list as the authority for the current address, phone number and counter hours. We could not open that site from our build machine, and the only street address we found is in a private directory, so we do not repeat contact details on this page.
Why we hold them back
Offices relocate, phone lines change and directories copy each other. A wrong number wastes a trip, so we point you to the source rather than printing an unverified one.
Check before travelling
Confirm the day’s timings and whether your service needs an appointment. Many tasks can be finished online without a visit at all.
How should you type MH47 in forms and searches?
Plates print the code as MH 47, MH-47 or MH47, and all three mean the same thing. Online portals expect the full number without spaces or hyphens, so type the state letters, office digits, series letters and number in one string when you search Vahan or pay a challan.

Leading zeros
Single-digit Mumbai codes are written with a zero, as in MH 01 or MH 02. MH47 has two digits already, so nothing needs adding.
On insurance and loan papers
Insurers and lenders copy the number from your RC. If a policy shows a stray space or a missing letter, ask for a correction, because a mismatch can delay a claim.
What changes when you shift home into or out of MH47?
Your registration number never changes with a move, but the address on the record should. Section 49 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 asks owners to report a new address within 30 days. Moving into Goregaon to Dahisar links your future paperwork to the Mumbai North office.
Moving from Mira Road to Borivali
The car keeps its original prefix. Update the RC address on Vahan, and later services such as transfers or duplicates go to the MH47 counter.
Moving out of the state
A long stay outside Maharashtra means re-registering the vehicle there, starting with a no objection certificate from the office that holds your file. The broader list of codes sits in our RTO codes hub.
