Udaipur RTO: what does an RJ 27 plate tell you?

An RJ 27 plate means the vehicle was first registered by the Udaipur RTO, the transport office for Udaipur district in southern Rajasthan. The city, founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II, is known as the City of Lakes. The plate records the issuing desk only, not where the owner lives today.

Reading the plate from left to right

RJ is the state code for Rajasthan, 27 is the office, then come one or two series letters and a four-digit number. On a plate such as RJ 27 CA 1234, only the first four characters tell you about Udaipur.

Why it is number 27

When two-digit codes arrived in 1989, the original districts were numbered alphabetically. Udaipur came last among them, after Tonk (RJ 26), so every later office got 28 or higher.

Which areas fall under RTO Udaipur Rajasthan?

RTO Udaipur Rajasthan serves the residents of Udaipur district. Wikipedia lists tehsils such as Girwa, Badgaon, Gogunda, Kotra, Jhadol, Kherwara, Rishabhdeo, Mavli, Vallabhnagar, Bhindar and Kanor. The district covers about 11,724 sq km, with a 2011 population of just over 30.6 lakh.

City and Girwa

Udaipur city, with about 4.5 lakh people inside city limits in 2011, sits in Girwa tehsil. Most new cars and scooters bought from city dealers are booked against this office.

The tribal south and the hills

Kotra, Jhadol and Kherwara lie in the hilly south and west, close to Gujarat. Owners there travel further, so they usually start their work online and visit only when a test or inspection is due.

A note on the tehsil count

The district article lists fifteen tehsils in its infobox but mentions eighteen in its text, and some of those listed have since moved to Salumbar. Your address on Aadhaar or other proof decides which office you use.

What is the Udaipur RTO code and its old series?

The Udaipur RTO code today is simply RJ 27. Before 1989, though, Udaipur was one of the busiest offices in the state, and the Wikipedia RTO table credits it with eight three-letter series: RJY, RSY, RRY, RSJ, RRJ, RNY, RPJ and RPO, plus taxi numbers from the shared RST range 6001 to 7000.

Spotting an older Mewar vehicle

A vintage jeep or Bullet with RJY or RRJ on its plate is an Udaipur registration from before the two-digit system. Its record may or may not have been moved into Vahan, so ask the seller for the original papers.

Where is the RTO office Udaipur located?

We could not confirm the RTO office Udaipur address from the Rajasthan Transport Department itself. Private vehicle sites place it in the Sukher area, on the Bhuwana bypass side, PIN 313001, but their phone numbers and hours do not match one another, so we do not print them here.

How to get the current details

Open the office directory on transport.rajasthan.gov.in, or read the address printed on the appointment slip you get after booking a slot on the Parivahan portal. Both come from the department.

Which services does the Udaipur transport office handle?

Like other district offices, the Udaipur desk handles new registrations, duplicate and renewed registration certificates, ownership transfer, hypothecation entries, fitness checks for commercial vehicles, permits, and learner and driving licences for people living in its area.

What starts online

Almost every application begins on the national Parivahan services: you fill the form, upload documents and pay online. The office visit is mainly for the driving test, biometric capture or a vehicle inspection.

Which office is yours

Apply where your current address falls. If you have moved from Udaipur to Salumbar, your work now goes to the Salumbar office even though your car still shows RJ 27.

How do you check an RJ 27 number online?

The registration code is only a starting point. To know for certain which office issued a plate, search the full number on Vahan’s Know Your Vehicle Details service or in the mParivahan app. The result names the registering authority and hides most of the owner’s name.

1. Read the prefix. RJ 27 at the start of a plate points to the Udaipur office in Rajasthan.
2. Open Vahan or mParivahan. Go to the Know Your Vehicle Details service on the Vahan portal or open the mParivahan app.
3. Enter the full number. Type the complete registration number and sign in with a mobile OTP.
4. Read the registering authority. The result names the office that registered the vehicle, along with model, fuel and validity dates.

Before buying a used car in Udaipur

Match the chassis and engine numbers on the record with the vehicle in front of you, and check that insurance and fitness dates are current.

Which codes surround Udaipur in the Mewar region?

Udaipur district borders Rajsamand to the north, Chittorgarh and Pratapgarh to the east, Dungarpur to the south, Pali and Sirohi across the Aravallis, and Sabarkantha in Gujarat to the south-west. Each neighbour has its own code, listed below.

Gujarat plates in the south-west

Because Sabarkantha lies just across the state line from Kherwara and Kotra, GJ plates are common in those tehsils. They are Gujarat registrations, not an Udaipur series.

How did Salumbar and Rajsamand change Udaipur plates?

Udaipur district has been split twice. In 1991, seven tehsils moved to the new Rajsamand district (RJ 30). On 7 August 2023, Salumbar district was carved out with Sarada, Lasadiya, Salumbar, Semari and Jhallara tehsils, and it now uses RJ 58.

Salumbar survived the 2024 review

Nine new districts were dissolved in December 2024, but Salumbar was not one of them. It remains a district in Udaipur division.

Older plates stay as they are

A car from Sarada registered in 2020 will still carry RJ 27. Plates are never renumbered when district borders move. Wikipedia’s Udaipur article lists both RJ 27 and RJ 58, which reflects this overlap.

Is RTO Udaipur Rajasthan the same as Udaipur in Tripura or Himachal?

No. Two other Indian towns share the name. Udaipur in Gomati district, Tripura, uses TR 03, and Udaipur in Lahaul and Spiti, Himachal Pradesh, uses HP 43. Only the Rajasthan city carries RJ 27.

Chhota Udaipur is in Gujarat

Chhota Udaipur is a separate district in Gujarat with a GJ code of its own. It has no link with the RJ 27 office.

RJ50 RTO code: which office is it?

The RJ50 RTO code belongs to Nokha, a town in Bikaner district in the north of Rajasthan. Nokha was founded by Maharaja Ganga Singh as a farmers’ market and is nicknamed Dharam Nagri. It is a sub-office; Bikaner city itself uses RJ 07.

How big is Nokha

Wikipedia gives an estimated population of about 1.2 lakh in 2017, which explains why it was given its own registration desk.

Is the RJ50 RTO anywhere near Udaipur?

No. The RJ50 RTO at Nokha is in Bikaner division, at the opposite end of Rajasthan from Udaipur. People often reach this page because both codes appear on state-wide lists, but an RJ 50 vehicle was registered in the north, not in Mewar.

Beawar RTO code: RJ 36 explained

The Beawar RTO code is RJ 36. Beawar, about 70 km from Ajmer, was once a cotton-trading hub and is home to Shree Cement. It became a district on 7 August 2023 and kept that status after the December 2024 review.

RJ 36 is not Ajmer

Ajmer city uses RJ 01. Vehicles registered in Beawar before RJ 36 existed would carry Ajmer’s code, and they keep it.

Which Udaipur plate mix-ups are most common?

Most confusion comes from district splits and from towns that share a name. A Salumbar owner may expect RJ 27 but get RJ 58, while RJ 50 and RJ 36 are often wrongly tied to Udaipur. A quick look at the Vahan record clears up each case.

Moving out of Rajasthan

An RJ 27 vehicle needs a new registration mark only if it is kept in another state for more than 12 months, under Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
